Achna Dam

This site consists of Achna irrigation dam and its immediate surroundings. On the margins of the dam is well-developed vegetation including reedbeds and scrub. The area surrounding the dam includes cereal fields and fruit tree groves. The site has become an important wetland in recent years and is one of the most important breeding sites on the island for Black-winged stilt and Spur-winged plover.

Problems

The variability of water levels at the dam creates problems for waterbirds using the site and for breeding species in particular. The other principal threats for birds at the dam are disturbance by careless visitors and walkers who often have dogs with them as well as illegal shooting and illegal bird trapping with mist nets and lime sticks.

Priority species:

Black winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus)

Passage Migrant
Occasional Breeder

Spur winged plover (Vanellus spinosus)
