                   Cyprus Important Bird Areas (IBA's)

Paralimni Lake

A shallow natural lake, which only holds water in wetter years. Located next to the Larnaca to Ayia Napa motorway and south of Oroklini village. When the site holds water, it hosts significant numbers of waterbirds. It is the most important breeding site on the island for Black winged stilt.

Problems

Development pressure in the area is intense - it is already surrounded by built-up areas and bisected by a new road- and is likely to continue. The variability of the water levels at the site is also a problem for birds and breeding waterbirds in particular. There is also pressure to drain the site in order to remove a perceived mosquito problem.

Priority species:

Spur-winged plover (Vanellus spinosus)

Migrant Breeder

Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus)

Passage Migrant Occasional Breeder
