                   Cyprus Important Bird Areas (IBA's)

Paralimni Lake

A small, natural, shallow and seasonal lake, which holds large quantities of water only during the winter. During the summer dry season water levels vary according to the winter rainful, but isolated pools of water are present even in drier years. The site is located near Paralimni town.

The lake is among the most important breeding sites on the Island for Spur-winged plover and is also a breeding site for Black-winged stilt and Short-toed lark.

Problems

Building development pressure in the area as a whole is intense. This poses the most serious threat to the site. Illegal shooting and illegal bird trapping are serious direct threats for the avifauna. There is much dumping of rubbish within the lake area and the presence of stray cats and dogs also poses a direct threat to birds.

Priority species:

Spur-winged plover (Vanellus spinosus)
