                   Cyprus Important Bird Areas (IBA's)

Pentadaktylos Mountains

The site occupies almost the whole of Pentadactylos mountain range from Kornos to Kantara. 61.9% of this is a state forest. It is a narrow range of mountain peaks running the length of the northern coast.

A total of 29 Birds Directive Annex 1 species have been reported in the site. Pentadaktylos mountains site is one of the best sites in Cyprus for eight of them.

Problems

The whole site is in the northern part of Cyprus. Quarrying of limestone occurs at many places, but between Kythrea and Dikomo it is extensive, causing serious damage to the ecosystem of the site. Hunting is permitted within the site, but this need not pose a threat provided enforcement of the relevant law is strict and hunting is exercised in a sustainable manner, taking into account the conservation needs of the species for which the site is designated. Illegal shooting is a serious threat.
