                  Cyprus Special Protection Areas (SPA's)

Сape Aspro

As of the 22nd November 2005 this site was designated an SPA

The site is situated on the southwestern coast of Cyprus , on the boundary of the Lemesos and Pafos Districts. Cape Aspro is the easternmost part of the site and Petra tou Romiou the westernmost end. Pissouri village is located north of the site. The cliffs of this site host the largest breeding colony of Eleonora's Falcon in Cyprus . These same cliffs are also one of the best breeding sites for Peregrines and for Shags in Cyprus . This site is also a very important feeding area for the Griffon vulture.

Problems

The cliffs are inaccessible from land, so the main threats to breeding birds are disturbance from boats and helicopters. Also a serious threat to the birds of the site, and the vulture in particular, is the illegal use of poison bait by local shepherds targeting foxes, which has led to the deaths of a number of vultures in recent years.  Hunting is permitted within the site, but this need not pose a threat provided enforcement of the relevant law is strict and hunting is exercised in a sustainable manner, taking into account the conservation needs of the species for which the site is designated.

Priority species:

Migrant Breeder

Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis)
