Cyprus Special Protection Areas
(SPA's)
Larnaka
Salt
Lakes
As
of the 22nd November 2005 this site was designated an SPA
The Larnaka
Salt lakes site consists of a complex of four salt lakes and an adjacent
wetland situated to the south of Larnaka and to the east of Meneou and
Dromolaxia villages.
Larnaka
Salt
Lake
is one of the two most important wetlands in
Cyprus
, along with
Akrotiri
Salt
Lake
. Over 20,000 waterbirds regularly use the salt lake on migration and in
winter. The site is a key habit for Flamingos, with over 3000
individuals regularly using the lakes as a feeding ground during the
winter season. The Larnaka Sewage Treatment Plant pools have in recent
years become a very important feeding area for birds, attracting
thousands of individuals.
Problems
The presence
of the airport poses a serious disturbance problem for the avifauna of
the site and there is also a pollution threat from the constant air
traffic. Flamingos have also fallen foul to lead poisoning caused by
ingestion of lead shot left over from the operation of a clay pigeon
shooting range on the main lake up until 2003. Uncontrolled tourism and
building development are growing threats to the area, as is poaching,
which is a periodic problem.
