Red-necked Grebes breed in Turkey (100-1000 pairs) and throughout eastern side of Europe. Normal wintering areas are south and west of breeding area. A winter visitor to Turkey and the south Caspian. Vagrants have reached the southern side of the Mediterranean and Kuwait. Surprisingly few have been seen in Cyprus on coastal or inland waters. There have only been six accepted records of nine birds.
