Bird News Bird Records for January 2003 [The
following list contains records that have not been corrected or
corroborated] Little
Grebe Tachybaptus
ruficollis The
numbers reported from Larnaca Sewage Works peaked at 38 birds on the 19th
whilst the peak number reported from Akhna Dam was 40 on the 5th.
Both Bishop's Pool and Aspro Dam Pools had 2 each for most of the month
whilst the maximum daily count at Oroklini was 10. Birds were heard at
Athalassa on the 26th. Great
Crested Grebe Podiceps
cristatus Asprokremnos
Dam had up to 9 birds present for most of the month with a peak of 14 from
Akhna Dam on the 19th, 3 at Evretou Dam on the 18th
and 1 each at Kouris Dam and Larnaca Sewage Works. Black-necked
Grebe Podiceps
Nigricollis Numbers
at the Larnaca Sewage Works crept up all month with a maximum of 86 birds
on the 19th. The highest count at Akhna Dam was of 16 on the 5th
whilst there was 1 each at Kouris Dam on the 5th and at Evretou
Dam on the 19th. Cormorant Phalacrocorax
carbo On
the 14th c200 were reported from Akhna Dam the highest count of
this species that we have this month. The peak at Larnaca Sewage Works was
of 120 on the 19th, 56 at Polemedhia Dam on the 11th
but only 12 from the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th. 76 were
reported from the Ormidhia Buoys on the 29th and 3 from Evretou
Dam on the 18th. Shag
Phalacrocorax aristotelis The
offshore rocks at Mandria usually held 2 birds whilst 2 were reported from
Kensington Cliffs on the 19th. White
Pelican Pelecanus
onocrotalus 1 young bird could be seen on and off at Larnaca
Sewage Works during the month whilst 2 were present at Akhna Dam all
month. Bittern Botaurus
stellaris Reported
from Phasouri Reed Beds all month in 1’s and 2’s by most people but 3
were seen there for most of the month. There was also 1
reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2nd. Cattle
Egret Bubulcus
ibis Phasouri
Reed Beds held up to 4 all month whist 3 were seen at irregular intervals
at the Aspro Dam Pools. There was a bewildered individual adjacent to the
Tomb of the Kings traffic lights in Kato Paphos on the 3rd
whilst 1 was reported from Yermasoya Dam on the 11th. Little
Egret Egretta
garzetta The
peak number reported from Akhna Dam was 27 on the 5th whilst 2
birds frequented the Larnaca Area all month, turning up at the various
wetlands either alone or together. Great White Egret
Egretta alba
Reported from only Akhna Dam
were up to 5 birds were present all month. Grey
Heron Ardea
cinerea There
was a maximum of 2 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 24th and 2 at
Evretou Dam on the 6th. There were 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on
the 19th whist the maximum daily count at Oroklini was also 3.
Polemedhia Dam held 3 on the 11th. Spoonbill Platalea
leucorodia Akrotiri
Salt Lake had 1 on the 23rd and the 24th; Akhna Dam
had 1 on the 5th whilst Larnaca Sewage Works also had a single
bird on the 10th. Greater
Flamingo Phoenicopterus
ruber The
peak count in the Larnaca Area was of c3200 on the 19th.
Unfortunately no one has submitted a count for Akrotiri this month. There
was a lone bird reported from Zakaki Marsh on the 28th. Mute
Swan Cygnus olor 2
adults and 4 young birds frequented Zakaki Marsh all month. White-fronted
Goose Anser
albifrons The goose flock at Larnaca Sewage Works appears to
be about 115 birds strong. Ruddy
Shelduck Tadorna
ferruginea A
single bird frequented the Akrotiri Salt Lake from at least the 11th
until the 18th and the numbers reported from Larnaca increased
from 10 on the 2nd to 14 at the Sewage Works on the 30th.
Although reported from both the Salt Lake and the Sewage Works it is most
likely the same flock moving around. Shelduck Tadorna
tadorna The
birds present at Akrotiri Salt Lake peaked at c480 on the 18th
whilst the Larnaca flock peaked at c500 on the 30th. 7 were
also reported from Larnaca Airport Pools North on the 19th.
Wigeon Anas
penelope Highest
count at Larnaca Sewage Works was of 126 birds on the 19th
during the Waterfowl Count. The same survey reported c550 birds at the
Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th. There were 27 at Evretou Dam on
the 18th and 31 at Asprokremnos Dam the following day, the 19th.
Spiro’s Pool held 60 on the 19th. Gadwall Anas
strepera Larnaca
Sewage Works had the highest count of 24 on the 5th but close
behind were 22 at Zakaki Marsh on the 8th. Akrotiri Salt Lake
held just 8 on the 18th with Larnaca Sewage Works having 15 on
the 19th and Akhna Dam 2 on the same date. Teal
Anas crecca The
highest reported total was of 910 at the Kouris Dam on the 5th
with Larnaca Sewage Works holding 600 on the same date. During the
Wildfowl Count on the 18th there were 14 on Bishop's Pool, 64
at Phasouri Reed Beds, c360 at Akrotiri Salt Lake, 3 at Evretou Dam and
c80 at the Asprokremnos Dam. On the 19th there were 450 at
Larnaca Sewage Works, 27 at Spiro’s Pool and 4 at Larnaca Airport Pools
North. Just 30 were reported from the Asprokremnos Dam near to Phinikas on
the 23rd. The maximum daily count at Oroklini was 150 birds. Mallard Anas
platyrhynchos Counts
on the 18th were c120 at the Asprokremnos Dam, 24 at Evretou
Dam and c260 on the Akrotiri Salt Lake. Counts on the 19th were
109 at Asprokremnos Dam, 165 at the Larnaca Sewage Works with 51 at
Larnaca Airport Pools North. 66 were reported from the Asprokremnos Dam
near to Phinikas on the 24th. Pintail Anas acuta The
Waterfowl Count on the 18th revealed c140 at Akrotiri Salt Lake
whilst the count on the 19th saw 36 at Larnaca Sewage Works, 27
at Meneou Pools and 72 at Larnaca Airport Pools South. Shoveler Anas
clypeata High counts were from Larnaca Salt Lake on the 5th with 240
birds and Larnaca Sewage Works on the same date with 210 birds with
Larnaca Airport Pools South having 40.
1 or 2 birds frequented Oroklini at the start of the month and 1
frequented Asprokremnos Dam mid-month. The Waterfowl Count on the 18th
showed c170 birds using Akrotiri Salt Lake whilst on the 19th
the figures were 625 at Larnaca Sewage Works, 194 at Spiro’s Pool and
460 at Meneou Pools. A high count of c1000 birds at the Larnaca Sewage
Works on the 2nd most probably indicated that all birds from
the surrounding areas were using this site on this particular day. Red-crested Pochard
Netta rufina Up to 2 males frequented Larnaca Sewage Works all month. Pochard Aythya
ferina The count on the 18th revealed just 3 birds using Evretou Dam
whilst the count on the 19th revealed 222 at Larnaca Sewage
Works, the highest number reported all month. Ferruginous Duck Aythya
nyroca A single bird was at the Aspro Dam Pools from the 11th to the
21st whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had just the 1 bird on the 5th. Tufted Duck Aythya
fuligula Only reported from the Larnaca Sewage Works with a maximum of 6 on the
10th. White-headed Duck Oxyura
leucocephala It is highly likely that the single bird, reported from Zakaki Marsh at
the end of last month until the 8th of this month, relocated to
the Larnaca Sewage Works. It was first reported there on the 10th
and was still present at the month’s end. Despite extensive searching no
White-headed Duck has been seen at Zakaki since the 8th. Marsh Harrier Circus
aeruginosus Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake with 2 to 4 birds seen all month,
Larnaca Sewage Works with 3 birds on the 5th, 2 birds on the 30th
with singles there on other dates, Phasouri Reed Beds with 3 birds on the
11th, Zakaki Marsh with 2 birds on the 8th and
Kouris Dam with a juv on the 11th. Hen Harrier Circus
cyaneus Wintering birds were seen at Mandria on the 2nd [a female], 3
males and 4 females at Akrotiri Salt Lake seen daily all month and a
single female at Asprokremnos Dam mid-month. Harrier spp. A ringtail flew over Spiro’s Pool on the 19th. Goshawk Accipiter
gentilis The fortunate participants obtained great views of a female during the
Waterfowl Count at Evretou Dam on the 18th. Sparrowhawk Accipiter
nisus Singles at Evretou Dam on the 6th, Akrotiri Salt Lake on the
10th, a male at Asprokremnos Dam on the 18th and
another single bird at Goudi Farm on the 23rd. Common Buzzard Buteo
buteo B.b.buteo Up to 4 reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake all month with a single
bird at Mandria Long-legged Buzzard
Buteo rufinus A single juv at Aspro Dam Pools on the 5th provided
wonderful, close views. There were also singles reported from
Mavrokolymbos Dam on the 11th, Nikoklia on the 16th
and 2 birds near Kato Lefkara on the 16th. Rough-legged Buzzard
Buteo lagopus This extremely rare bird near the
Tsadha Golf Club on the 26th with another sighting on the 27th.
Full Field Notes have been submitted to, and accepted by, your Rarities
Committee and represents the 7th record for the island, the
last previous sighting being in 1994. Bonelli’s Eagle Hieraaetus
fasciatus 1 bird seen at Asprokremnos Dam on the 8th, 2 at Evretou Dam
on the 9th, great views of a pair of adults was seen by the
‘Waterfowl Counters’ at Evretou Dam on the 18th and another
pair of adults was seen near Phinikas on the Asprokremnos Dam on the 23rd. Kestrel Falco
tinnunculus Up to a maximum of 5 seen daily at Akrotiri Salt Lake, 1 at Engomi in
Nicosia on the 31st whilst the maximum daily count at Oroklini
was of 2 birds. Merlin Falco
columbarius Just the one sighting of a male at the Asprokremnos Dam on
the 12th. Peregrine Falco
peregrinus 1 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 7th, a male at the Kouris Dam
on the 11th, 1 seen daily at Akrotiri Salt Lake and 1 at Pomos
Point on the 5th.
Chukar Alectoris
chukar Widespread throughout the island, the highest count was of 12 birds at
Oroklini on the 23rd. Black Francolin Francolinus
francolinus 3 seen at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 12th, 2 males at Mandria
on the 5th, 2 seen daily at the Akrotiri Salt Lake whilst the
maximum daily count at Oroklini was of 3 birds. Quail Coturnix
coturnix 4 at the
Yermasoya Dam on both the 11th and the 15th. Water Rail Rallus
aquaticus 2 to 4 were heard calling all month at Phasouri Reed Beds plus 2 were
heard calling at Zakaki Marsh on the 5th. A lone bird was seen
at Aspro Dam Pools on both the 15th and the 19th. Moorhen Gallinula
chloropus Seen at many wetlands throughout the month of note are 6 at the Paphos
Rubbish Tip on the 3rd, a high count of 16 at Athalassa on the
26th whilst the maximum daily count at Oroklini was of 12
birds. Coot Fulica atra Present at all the major bodies of water. Akhna Dam had it’s highest
count on the 5th with 580 birds but the 577 reported from there
on the 19th during the Waterfowl Count sounds like a more
accurate figure. Asprokremnos Dam had 130 on the 18th whilst
Evretou Dam had 83 on the same date. 337 were reported from Larnaca Sewage
Works on the 19th whilst there were 15 and 23 respectively at
the Achelia Dam and the Aspro Dam Pools on the same date, the 19th.
The maximum daily count at Oroklini was of 90 birds. Avocet Recurvirostra
avosetta 2 were reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 3rd but just
the one there on the 19th. There was also 1 reported from
Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 30th; the same one or the
‘missing’ one? Stone
Curlew Burhinus
oedicnemus The
roost at the Meneou Pools held 46 birds on the 14th whilst the
roost south of Aspro Dam Pools held 42 birds on the 24th. Little
Ringed Plover Charadrius
dubius There
were 6 at Akhna Dam on the 5th whilst Oroklini reported a daily
count of 4 birds; these were the only sites from which this species was
reported. Ringed Plover Charadrius
hiaticula Larnaca Airport Pools North was the only site holding this species this
month with 3 on the 10th. Kentish Plover Charadrius
alexandrinus There were about 100 at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2nd but
only 20 reported from there on the 10th and just 4 on the 19th.
10 at Meneou Pools on the 19th is the only other record this
month. Greater Sand Plover
Charadrius leschenaultii There were 5 present all month at the Paphos Lighthouse Area. Golden Plover Pluvialis
apricaria The flock at Paphos Lighthouse Area, present all
month but sometimes difficult to find, numbered 52 birds. Grey Plover Pluvialis
squatarola There was a single bird present at Paphos
Lighthouse Area all month. Lapwing Vanellus
vanellus Widespread across the island the maximum count at the Asprokremnos Dam
was 231 on the 19th, c65 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 17th,
24 at Mandria on the 24th, just 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on
the 19th with the maximum daily count at Oroklini being 50
birds. Little Stint Calidris
minuta Larnaca Salt Lake had c80 on the 2nd but only 35 during the
Waterfowl Count on the 19th. Numbers at Akrotiri Salt Lake were
estimated at c270 on the 5th with c320 on the 18th.
Larnaca Airport Pools South hosted 20 birds on the 5th with 5
at Meneou Pools on the 19th. Temminck’s Stint
Calidris temminckii Present all month at Akhna Dam with 5 reported on the 30th.
The only other site with this species was Larnaca Sewage Works with just 1
on the 9th. Dunlin Calidris alpina There
were 150 at Larnaca Airport Pools South on the 5th, 18 at
Larnaca Salt Lake on Ruff Philomachus pugnax c20 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 8th and 10 at Larnaca Sewage
Works the following day. Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes
minimus Just 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 5th and 1 at Yermasoya Dam
on the 11th. Snipe Gallinago
gallinago A high of 38 were reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 10th
with just 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 19th and 2 being the
maximum daily count at Oroklini. Black-tailed Godwit
Limosa limosa A single bird seen at Akhna Dam on the 5th is
the only record. Curlew Numenius
arquata Reported from only Phasouri Reed Beds with a maximum count of 12 birds
on the 8th. Spotted Redshank Tringa
erythropus The only
sighting with 1 at Larnaca Airport Pools North on the 10th. Redshank Tringa
totanus Reported from Oroklini until the 6th with a maximum of 3
birds on the 2nd. Larnaca Airport Pools South had 20 on the 5th
with Larnaca Airport Pools North having 30 on the 10th. Up to 5
were seen at Phasouri Reed Beds all month whilst there were 2 at the
Larnaca Sewage Works on the 19th. Finally the Larnaca Airport
Pools South count was of 40 birds on the 30th. Greenshank Tringa
nebularia A single report of 4 birds present at Akhna Dam on the 5th. Green Sandpiper Tringa
ochropus Only reported from Oroklini with a single bird seen on the 13th
and the 19th. Wood Sandpiper Tringa
glareola Again, only reported from Oroklini with a single bird on the 19th. Turnstone Arenaria
interpres Present at the Paphos Lighthouse Area all month although at times
difficult to find. The maximum number was 5 on the 4th. Red-necked Phalarope
Phalaropus lobatus A very unusual record of 1 at Akhna Dam on the 17th
although I did hear on the grapevine that another [the same] was seen at
Spiro’s Pool about the same date. In the past the earliest record was
late March, there has never been a January sighting before. Mediterranean Gull Larus
melanocephalus A ringed, 1st winter bird was observed at Paphos Lighthouse
Area on the 6th. There were also 2 reported from Larnaca Sewage
Works on the 30th. Little Gull Larus minutus This particular species has been quite numerous this winter. There were
18 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th, 12 on the 10th,
24 on the 19th and 4 on the 30th. At Paphos
Lighthouse Area there were 2 first minter birds on the 4th
whilst 4 birds were reported from Paphos Harbour between the 6th
and the 11th. At Akhna Dam there were 2 on the 5th
with the same number reported there on the 30th. 1 was seen at
Oroklini on the 9th, 25th and the 26th. Black-headed Gull
Larus ridibundus High counts included c3000 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 19th,
c300 on Ladies Mile on the 11th and c500 at the Limassol
sea-front between the 9th to the 20th. The maximum
daily count at Oroklini was of 60 birds. Slender-billed Gull Larus genei Reported from just Zakaki Marsh with a maximum of 3 between the 12th
to the 28th. Audouin’s Gull Larus audouinii 1 at
Potamos Liopetri on the 14th. Common Gull Larus canus An adult at Mandria on the 5th, a first winter at Larnaca
Sewage Works on the 14th and another first winter at Zakaki
Marsh on the 18th are the only reports this month. Lesser Black-backed Gull
Larus fuscus L.f.fuscus Singles reported from Kouris Dam on the 5th, Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th, 10th and the 19th, Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th to the 23rd with 2 at Mandria on the 25th. 7 were reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 5th with 3 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 30th. L.f.heuglini Singles at Mandria on the 9th, Larnaca Airport Pools
South on the 10th and Asprokremnos Dam on the 21st. There were 7 reported from
Asprokremnos Dam on the 12th, 3 on the 23rd, 4 at Larnaca
Salt Lake on the 30th and 4 at Mandria on the 31st. Yellow-legged Gull Larus cachinnans Not identified to ssp level but presumably many would have been cachinnans
at this time of the year. High counts included c1180 at Akrotiri Salt
Lake on the 5th, 400 at the Paphos Tip on the 3rd,
270 at Kouris Dam on the 5th, c200 at Mandria on the 9th,
350 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th and 400 at Larnaca Salt
Lake on the 19th. Oroklini had a maximum of 8 on the 25th. Armenian
Gull Larus
armenicus Reported
from Asprokremnos Dam with 6 on the 3rd, 12 on the 12th,
1 on the 18th and 8 Sandwich Tern Sterna
sandvicensis 1 or 2 were reported from the Paphos seafront all
month. Little Tern
Sterna albifrons 1 frequented the Larnaca Sewage Works on and around the 19th. Whiskered Tern
Chlidonias hybridus 2 were reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th and the
30th. Stock Dove Columba
oenas There were 2 at Mandria on the 16th, 1 at Yermasoya Dam on
the 18th and finally 2 on the Xeros Potamos on the 19th. Collared Dove Streptopelia
decaocto Oroklini had just 1 on the 12th whilst 4 were reported all
month from Strovolos. Barn Owl Tyto
alba There were 2 seen at the Phasouri Plantations on the 10th and
1 flew over the road at Chirokitia on the 19th. Scops Owl Otus
scops cyprius 3 to 5 were heard calling all month from within the Episkopi Garrison
whist 1 was reported from Armou on the 20th. Little Owl Athene
noctua Apart from 1 at Athalassa on the 26th all reports came from
the Asprokremnos Dam where up to 3 were seen on various dates throughout
the month. Kingfisher Alcedo
atthis Single sightings were from Akhna Dam on the 5th, Paphos
Lighthouse Area on the 10th and the 22nd and Evretou
Dam on the 18th. 2 were reported from Achelia Dam on the 19th
with 2 to 3 being seen at Zakaki Marsh all month. Pied Kingfisher Ceryle
rudis The lone male was reported from Zakaki Marsh all
month but its appearances were very sporadic. Calandra Lark Melanocorypha
calandra 1 was reported from the Dhiarizos River Valley on the 11th
whilst 2 were seen at Spiro's Pool on the 14th. Crested Lark Galerida
cristata There were 10 reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th
whilst the maximum daily count at Oroklini was of 30 birds. Woodlark Lullula
arborea The 6 reported from Aspro Dam Pools on the 11th were a fairly
constant feature of the area plus there were 14 reported from Akhna Dam on
the 17th and 6 at the Xeros Potamos on the 19th.
Skylark Alauda
arvensis This very common winter visitor was reported from Mandria with c800 on
the 2nd, 20 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the same date with 15
reported from there on the 5th.
Crag Martin Ptyonoprogne
rupestris The only
report this month of 5 in the Paphos Forest on the 19th. Swallow Hirundo
rustica First report was of 3 birds at Oroklini on the 28th, this was
followed by 1 bird there on both the 29th and the 30th. Tawny Pipit Anthus
campestris There was a very early arrival at Mandria on the 15th. Meadow Pipit Anthus
pratensis 20 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th and the maximum
daily count at Oroklini of 4 are the only reports submitted for this
common winter visitor. Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus There were 15+ at Larnaca
Salt Lake on the 10th with a conflicting report stating 2 to 6
there all month. 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 10th with 1 at
Larnaca Sewage Works on the 14th completes the reports
submitted for this species. Water Pipit Anthus
spinoletta Aspro Dam Pools had 1 on the 3rd, Zakaki Marsh had 2 all
month and there was 1 at Yermasoya Dam on the 16th. Grey Wagtail
Motacilla cinerea 2 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 19th is the only record this
month. White Wagtail Motacilla alba Very common throughout the island but 60+ at
Strovolos and 20 at Zakaki Marsh all month are the only submitted
sightings. Robin Erithacus rubecula 2 at Evretou Dam on the 6th with 1 there on the 18th
and the maximum daily count was of 1 bird at Oroklini. The species was
heard all month at Athalassa and at Strovolos. Bluethroat Luscinia
svecica Reported from Aspro Dam Pools with just a single bird on the 3rd,
the 7th and the 11th.Oroklini had 1 bird on the 18th,
the 25th and the 30th. Black Redstart Phoenicurus
ochruros 1 at Oroklini on the 2nd, 1 at the Paphos Tip on the 3rd
with 1 at Ayia Varvara on the same date, 1 at Strovolos on the 13th,
2 males at Droushia on the 14th, 3 birds at Phinikas on the 23rd
and finally 1 bird at Oroklini on the 30th completes the report
for this species this month. Stonechat
Saxicola torquata
This ubiquitous species was surprisingly only reported twice this month,
a single bird at Athalassa on the 5th and 10 all month at
Oroklini. Finsch’s Wheatear
Oenanthe finschii Only males reported with 1 at Anarita Park on the 3rd, 3 at
Ayia Varvara on the 4th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 8th
and the 18th, 1 at Phinikas on the 23rd and finally
1 in the Avagas Gorge on the 26th. Blue Rock Thrush Monticola solitarius There was a female in the
quarry at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 10th and 2 birds at
Evretou Dam on the 23rd. Blackbird Turdus merula There were 2 males at Kouris Dam on the 11th and 1 male at
Evretou Dam on the 18th. Fieldfare Turdus pilaris 4 were seen daily at Akrotiri Salt Lake with 3 at the Yermasoya Dam on
the 18th and c40 at Droushia on the 14th. Song Thrush Turdus philomelos 6 at Kouris Dam on the 11th,
c10 at Evretou Dam on the 18th with just the 1 at Oroklini on
the 31st. Cetti’s Warbler Cettia
cetti 4 heard at Athalassa on the 5th, 1 seen at Kouris Dam on the
11th, 2 at Evretou Dam on the 18th and 2 at
Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th with singles being heard at
Phasouri on the 19th and at Athalassa on the 26th. Fan-tailed Warbler
Cisticola juncidis Just the one report of the maximum daily count at
Oroklini, which was 3 birds. Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon 1 reported from Aspro Dam
Pools on the 3rd and 3 at the reed-bed in front of Kouris Dam
on the 11th. Great Reed Warbler
Acrocephalus arundinaceus 1 at the
Phasouri Reed Beds on the 10th. Spectacled Warbler
Sylvia conspicillata 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th, 1 at Oroklini from the
9th to the 12th inclusive and 2 males at the
Asprokremnos Dam on the 23rd Sardinian Warbler Sylvia
melanocephala 1 male at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th with the maximum
daily count at Oroklini being of 2 birds. Cyprus Warbler Sylvia
melanothorax 2 at Pachyammos on the 4th, 2 males at Asprokremnos Dam on
the 5th, 3 males at Evretou Dam on the 6th with 2
males there on the 18th plus 2 males at Droushia on the 14th. Desert Warbler Sylvia
nana One at Mandria on the 29th.
Full Field Notes have been submitted. Blackcap Sylvia
atricapilla 1 at Evretou Dam on the 9th, 1 at Ayios Neophytou on the 11th,
2 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 12th, 2 at Akrounda on the 13th
with a further 2 males at Mandria on the 24th. Reported all month at
Strovolos. Chiffchaff Phylloscopus
collybita There were c12 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th with the
Oroklini maximum daily count being 8 birds. Goldcrest Regulus
regulus 1 heard in Troodos on the 7th with
one in the Paphos Forest on the 19th. Coal Tit Parus
ater cypriotes On the 7th there were c10 seen in Troodos whilst 8 were seen
at Prodhromos Dam on the 11th. Great Tit Parus
major Aphrodite 2 all month at Strovolos and at Athalassa. Wallcreeper Tichodroma
muraria 1 at Kensington Cliffs seen on the 11th. Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae
1 at Prodhromos Dam on the 11th. Penduline Tit Remiz
pendulinus 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 14th, 2 near to Zakaki Marsh
on the 18th with 1 at the Xeros Potamos on the 21st. Magpie Pica
pica The maximum daily count at Oroklini was of 2
birds. Jackdaw Corvus

at Episkopi on the 4th with 6 near to the Paphos Gate in
central Nicosia on the 27th. Hooded

corone 15 was the maximum daily count at Oroklini whilst
c40 were reported all month from Athalassa and c200 all month from
Strovolos. Starling

had just 1 bird on the 12th, 13th and the 19th
whilst there were 16 reported from House

domesticus The maximum daily count at Oroklini was of 40
birds. Spanish Sparrow Passer
hispaniolensis Between the 6th and the 25th Oroklini had up to
c180 birds, the maximum being seen on the 16th. 10 were
reported from the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th. Chaffinch Fringilla
coelebs Heard at Strovolos on the 13th, c250 seen at Droushia on the
14th, 2 females at Strovolos on the 15th and c60 at
Evretou Dam on the 18th. The maximum daily count at Oroklini
was only 1. Brambling Fringilla montifringilla A male and a female seen very well near to Tekke on the Larnaca Salt
Lake on the 30th. Serin Serinus
serinus c60 at Anarita Park on the 3rd, 15 at Asprokremnos Dam on the
12th with c120 there on the 19th with 10 on the
Armou to Tsadha track on the 27th. Up to 8 were reported from
Akrotiri Salt Lake throughout the month. Greenfinch Carduelis
chloris At the Paphos Lighthouse Area there were c120 on the 4th,
c100 at Droushia on the 14th with 4 being the maximum daily
count at Oroklini. Goldfinch Carduelis
carduelis 120
were reported from Ayia Varvara on the 4th whilst 8 was the
Oroklini maximum daily count. Siskin Carduelis
spinus Evretou Dam is certainly the easiest place to see this species with c40
there on the 6th and c12 on the 18th.
Linnet Carduelis
cannabina Just one report of c80 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th.
Crossbill Loxia
curvirostra Just the one report of 2 at Prodhromos Dam on the
11th. Hawfinch Coccothraustes coccothraustes There was 1 at Droushia
on the 14th with 1 at Goudi Farm on the 23rd. Reed Bunting Emberiza
schoeniclus Just the one report of 3 near to Zakaki Marsh on the 18th. Corn Bunting Miliaria
calandra There were 35 at Akhna Dam on the 5th with 36 at Larnaca
Sewage Works on the same date, 3 near to Zakaki Marsh on the 18th
with 2 at Evretou Dam on the same date plus 180 counted on the Armou to
Tsadha track on the 27th. The maximum daily count at Oroklini
was of 8 birds.
