Bird Records for November 2003

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

The estimate of the numbers at the Larnaca Sewage Works varied from c125 on the 9th to only 6 birds on the 30th, perhaps indicating that birds at the start of the month were merely on passage through the island? Akhna Dam reports indicate a more stable population there with 3 birds reported on the 14th but between 10 to 20 birds from mid-month to the month’s end. There were 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th, 1 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 30th and up to 3 at Athalassa all month.

Great Crested Grebe    Podiceps cristatus

The first reports of the year were on the 25th with single birds at Akhna Dam and at Asprokremnos Dam with a single reported from the latter site also on the 27th.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

The numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works built up from just 1 on the 1st to 8 on the 23rd but just 3 on the 30th. At Akhna Dam the numbers varied between 1 and 2 all month.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

There were just 4 at Akhna Dam on the 1st but by the end of the month the numbers had risen to c60. A similar picture emerged at Larnaca Sewage Works with just 2 on the 1st but c80 were seen during the Field Meeting there on the 23rd. Asprokremnos Dam had 11 on the 1st, 14 on the 20th and 7 on the 25th.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

2 reported at sea off Kouklia on the 10th and off Mandria on the 14th.

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

2 first year birds at Bishop's Pool on the 7th with just 1 there on the 11th and 1 at Zakaki Marsh also on the 11th which was most probably the ‘missing’ Bishop's Pool bird.

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

Only reported from Akhna Dam with 1 present on the 1st and the 15th and 10 on the 22nd.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

One report of a single bird near the Paphos Sewage Treatment Works on the 30th.

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

10 at Akhna Dam on the 1st, 6 on the 12th, 2 on the 14th, 15th and 17th, 6 on the 22nd and 16 on the 29th. There was 1 on Ladies Mile on the 7th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th, 1 at Potamos Liopetri on the 8th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th, 2 at Athalassa on the 19th, 26th and the 30th with 2 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 20th.

Great White Egret   Egretta alba   

At Akhna Dam there was 1 present on the 1st, 3 on the 23rd and 2 on the 29th with 1 reported from Zakaki Marsh until the 15th.

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

On the 1st there were 10 reported from Akhna Dam but then only 1 to 3 for the remainder of the month. There was 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 25th, 3 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 1st, 1 at Athalassa on the 19th, 26th and the 30th, 2 at Bishop's Pool on the 7th, c25 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st with just 2 on the 15th, between 1 and 3 at Oroklini from the 3rd to the 25th and 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th.  

Black Stork    Ciconia nigra

An immature was present at Akhna Dam on the 1st plus there was 1 at Oroklini from the 2nd through to the 8th whilst a single bird on the 6th but no location given, presumably Oroklini?

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

There were 4 present in the fields adjacent to the Paphos Sewage Treatment Works on the 21st and the 22nd but then just 3 until the months end.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

The number reported from the Larnaca Sewage Works varied between c500 on the 1st to c1000 on the 23rd but reverting to c500 on the 30th.

White-fronted Goose    Anser albifrons

2 present at the Larnaca Sewage Works from the 15th until at least the 23rd.

Lesser White-fronted Goose   Anser erythropus

3 adults were first identified and reported from Akhna Dam by a Cypriot birdwatcher on the 21st and then seen and photographed by members of the Birdlife Cyprus Field Meeting on the 23rd. They were still present at the month’s end.

The record has been accepted by your Records and Rarities Committee.

Greylag Goose    Anser anser

2 birds reported from Akhna Dam on the 28th.

Shelduck    Tadorna tadorna

Only reported from Larnaca Sewage Works with 5 birds on the 9th increasing to 16 birds by the 23rd.

Wigeon    Anas penelope

Up to 3 birds present at Aspro Dam Pools all month with c20 reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23rd and 10 from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th.

Gadwall    Anas strepera

A female was present at Aspro Dam Pools from the 15th until the month’s end, 1 male at Akhna Dam on the 15th with 1 female reported from this site on the 29th and a similar lone female at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23rd.

Teal    Anas crecca

Up to 5 reported from Aspro Dam Pools al month, 2 at Akhna Dam on the 12th with 8 on the 23rd, 14 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 25th, 1 at Bishop's Pool on the 7th whilst the numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works built up from just 5 on the 1st to c200 on the 23rd but only c20 reported on the 30th. There were c100 reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

6 at Akhna Dam on 17th with c20 there on 23rd, 16 at Asprokremnos Dam on 25th, 1 heard at Athalassa on 2nd and 16th, 38+ there on 19th, 12+ on 26th but just 7 there on 30th, c200 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st reducing to c30 on 30th, c80 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th with the numbers reducing at this site to just 30 on the 15th.

Pintail    Anas acuta

Aspro Dam Pools had between 1 and 5 all month, 4 at Asprokremnos Dam on 1st, up to c20 at Larnaca Sewage Works with the maximum on the 23rd and 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th.

Garganey    Anas querquedula

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st with 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 8th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

Between 1 and 2 at Aspro Dam Pools all month, up to c400 at Larnaca Sewage Works all month but only c50 reported from there on the 30th and c20 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th.

Red-crested Pochard    Netta rufina

A lone female arrived at Aspro Dam Pools on the 20th and has been present every day since plus a male bird arrived at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th and likewise was still present at the end of the month.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

A male was present at the Aspro Dam Pools from the 7th until the 30th with 2 males and 2 females being reported on the 25th and a lone female joining the male on the 30th whilst at the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 50 reported on 15th, increasing to c120 on the 23rd but only 12 on the 30th.

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

A male was seen on and off at the Aspro Dam Pools from the 1st to the 29th whilst at the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 5 on the 15th until the 22nd.

Tufted Duck    Aythya fuligula

2 at Akhna Dam on the 23rd, up to 5 at Larnaca Sewage Works from the 15th until the 23rd with just 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.

Scaup    Aythya marila

5 were seen together at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th

The full Field Notes provided were accepted by your Records and Rarities Committee as representing the 6th record for Cyprus. 

Honey Buzzard    Pernis apivorus

Extremely late records were 1 on 2nd and 1 on 9th but unfortunately the observer omitted to say just where they were seen and 1 at Mandria  on the 30th.

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

8 were seen at Kensington Cliffs on the 11th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

1’s and 2’s most of the month from Akhna Dam, singles at Aspro Dam Pools on the 1st and the 6th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th with 4 there on the 15th and just 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

There was a wintering female at Akhna Dam reported from the 1st to the 23rd with 2 present on the 24th, 1 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 7th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on both 11th and 15th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 24th.

Goshawk    Accipiter gentilis

Single birds at Adonis Falls on the 17th and at Peyia on the 29th.

Sparrowhawk    Accipiter nisus

1 at Adonis Falls on the 17th, 1 at Akhna Dam on the 12th to the 21st, a female at Aspro Dam Pools on both the 29th and the 30th and 1 bird at Avagas Gorge on the 5th and the 27th.

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo   

B.b.buteo

Birds reported as this ssp were reported from Akrotiri Reed Beds with 1 on 7th, Akrotiri Salt Lake with 1 on 11th, Cape Greco with 1, with an injured wing, on 9th, 1 at Chlorakas on 1st, 1 at Ezousa River on 22nd, 1 at Kermia Beach on 16th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 15th and 1 at Vrysoulles on 12th.   

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

2 over-flew Oroklini on the 2nd, 1 at Pissouri on the 7th and 1 at Akhna Dam intermittently between the 15th and the 28th.

Buzzard spp.

2 birds were reported as Rough-legged Buzzards Buteo lagopus at Ayios Dhimitrianos on the 10th but unfortunately the accompanying Field Reports did not conclusively prove this identification.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

There was one report of a single bird at Aspro Dam Pools on the 14th.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

1’s and 2’s reported from Akhna Dam, Athalassa, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Ezousa River, Lymbia, Oroklini, Paphos, Polemi and Strovolos.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

There was 1 female at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 1st and the 20th, a female at near the Paphos Sewage Treatment Works on the 1st and the 5th, a female at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7th and a male at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 29th.

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

A single bird was seen at Cape Pyla on the 1st.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus

Single birds were reported from Avagas Gorge on the 27th and from Akhna Dam on the 28th and the 29th.    

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Lymbia and Oroklini. The highest number seen was the maximum daily count at Oroklini of 45 birds.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

3 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 2nd, 1 there on the 7th, a pair down the Ezousa River on the 29th, 1 at Kouklia on the 18th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 3 birds.

Quail    Coturnix coturnix

2 at Akhna Dam on the 1st, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th and 22nd with 2 seen at Coral Bay on the 19th.

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

1 at Akhna Dam on 22nd and the 28th with 2 there on the 25th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 28th.

Little Crake    Porzana parva

A male at the Ezousa River on the 1st.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reported in small numbers from Akhna Dam [c10 on 23rd and 28th], Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Bishop's Pool [c20 on 23rd] and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of only 2 birds.

Coot    Fulica atra

Reported from Akhna Dam [c50 on 28th], Aspro Dam Pools [24 on 23rd], Athalassa [9+ on 30th], Bishop's Pool [14 on 7th], Larnaca Sewage Works [c100 on 15th and 23rd] and Phasouri Reed Beds with 20 on the 15th.

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

There were 7 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st but only 1 there on the 9th and the only other record is of 1 at Akhna Dam on the 28th.

Avocet    Recurvirostra avosetta

4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st with only 2 seen there on the 23rd.

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

2 to 6 heard on clear nights from Ayios Nikolaos from the 1st with 12 seen there on the 12th and 3 seen at Mandria on the 14th.

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

1 at Akhna Dam on the 6th and 10th and 2 at Ladies Mile on the 15th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st with 1 there on 15th and 3 at Akhna Dam on 22nd with 1 from the 23rd to at least the 27th.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

Singles at Ayia Thekla on 17th and at Akhna Dam on 26th, 11 at Ayia Thekla on 2nd with 5 there on 16th, 15 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st, c20 on 15th and 15 on 23rd with c20 at Ladies Mile on 7th and 8 on the 15th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

Up to 6 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on most visits all month with 5 at the beach at Mandria on the 3rd.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

Numbers at the Paphos Lighthouse Area peaked at 39 on the 19th, 1 at Mandria on the 8th with 14 there on the 24th and 2 seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th.

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus

Only reported from Akhna Dam with 2 on 5th and 12th and 1 on 23rd and the 28th.  

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Present at Akhna Dam for most of the month with a peak of c40 on the 8th, at the Ezousa River area with peaks of c30 on the 5th, 6th and the 28th, 2 at Kouklia on 16th, 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st, at Mandria for most of the month with a peak of 24 on the 15th, at Oroklini with 2 on 20th and 30th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 15th and 1 at Pomos Point on the 23rd. 

Sanderling    Calidris alba

Most unusual sightings were c80 at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 25th with 30 there the following day, the 26th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

Reported from Akhna Dam all month with a high of 5 on the 22nd, Ladies Mile with 3 on 7th and 10 on 15th, Larnaca Salt Lake with 2 on both 25th and 30th, Larnaca Sewage Works all month with a high of c50 on 23rd and Oroklini with singles on 19th, 21st and the 25th.

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

Only reported from Akhna Dam where they were seen all month with a high of 7 birds present on the 18th.

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

3 birds at Ladies Mile on the 15th.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

Akhna Dam had 1 bird from the 12th to at least the 27th, 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 25th with 41 on 30th and Larnaca Sewage Works with c15 on 1st and c40 on 23rd.

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Singles at Akhna Dam on 6th and 23rd and 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st with 1 on 9th, 2 on 15th and 1 on 23rd.

Jack Snipe    Lymnocryptes minimus

A single bird disturbed from the still-wet Ezousa Pools on the 2nd.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

There was 1 reported from Akhna Dam on the 12th to the 21st but 10 were reported from there on the 22nd. 3 were seen during the Field Meeting at Akhna Dam on the 23rd with 1 or 2 present there until the end of the month. 2 were seen at the Ezousa Pools on the 3rd, 1 at Oroklini most of the month from the 3rd and 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th.

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

A juvenile was reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st. 

Curlew    Numenius arquata

Phasouri Reed Beds had 1 on 7th and 2 on 11th, Larnaca Salt Lake 8 on 12th and Larnaca Sewage Works with 1 on 15th and 10 present on 22nd to at least 23rd.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

15 present at Larnaca Sewage Works from 1st to at least the 9th.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

Up to 3 at Akhna Dam from 12th to 28th, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st with 1 on 9th, 1 at Oroklini from 2nd to 4th with 2 present there from 7th to 16th and 1 at Potamos Liopetri on 8th.

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st with 1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 8th and 2 on 12th.

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st with 1 at Akhna Dam on the 23rd.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

1 at the Ezousa Pools on 3rd and 1 present at Akhna Dam on the 12th, 14th and the 23rd.

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

2 at Akhna Dam on the 18th is the only report this month.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

Seen at only the Paphos Lighthouse Area with 1 on both the 19th and the 28th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

A single report of a single bird at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 19th is the only report submitted.

Mediterranean Gull    Larus melanocephalus

There was an immature at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23rd.

Little Gull    Larus minutus

Present at the Larnaca Sewage Works with a single bird on the 15th but 2 birds there on the 23rd and a single bird at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 19th.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

The numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works increased from c150 on the 1st to c600 on the 23rd but only c100 reported from there on the 30th and 2 at Oroklini on 15th, 4 on the 2nd and 3 on the 27th.

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st, 1 on 22nd and 2 on 23rd are the only sightings this month.

Audouin’s Gull    Larus audouinii

An adult at Kermia Beach on the 16th is the only report.

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

1 at Mandria on the 8th.

L.f.heuglini

2 at Mandria on the 8th, 2 on the 22nd there with just 1 on the 26th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans

Up to c15 at 5the Larnaca Sewage Works all month. 

L.c.michahellis

Up to c150 at Mandria reported from 19th to 22nd appeared to be this ssp [or spp – depending on who you read].   

Armenian Gull    Larus armenicus

A lone adult was present at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th and the 22nd.  

Sandwich Tern    Sterna sandvicensis

The only report is a very strange and unusual report of 1 inland at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 25th.

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

Up to 3 were present at Akhna Dam from the 5th to the 26th with 2 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st with 1 there on the 15th.

Stock Dove    Columba oenas

A single bird at Akhna Dam on the 23rd.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Reported from Akhna Dam [max. of c10 on 12th and 22nd], Athalassa with a maximum of 4 on 30th and Vrysoulles with c60 on 28th.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Reported from just Oroklini with 2 on 1st and 1 on 11th and 12th and from Strovolos with 2 or 3 all month.

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Singles at Paphos on 2nd and 3rd, Tseri on 19th and Achelia on 24th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

2 heard most nights at Ayios Nikolaos from the 1st, 1 at Oroklini on most dates from the 11th, 6 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 15th, 1 at Athalassa on the 16th, 2 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 20th with 1 on 27th and 1 heard at Athalassa on the 26th. There was 1 at Peyia all month.

Long-eared Owl    Asio otus

3 at Athalassa on 16th and 19th, 4 there on 26th and 1 on the 30th.

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

2 at Akhna Dam on 1st and 14th, 1 there on 15th and 23rd with 3 there on 22nd, 1 at Ayia Thekla on 2nd and 2 at Potamos Liopetri on the 8th.

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 30th.

Lesser Short-toed Lark    Calandrella rufescens

3 birds at Mandria on the 3rd and on the 5th 7 birds present.

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

Up to 4 birds reported from Larnaca Sewage Works, Lymbia and Mandria with a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 30 birds.

Woodlark    Lullula arborea

1 at Oroklini on the 3rd, 6 at Akhna Dam on the 12th, 1 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 12th, 2 at Peyia on the 14th, 2 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 21st, c15 at Akhna Dam on the 22nd and the 23rd, 8 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 25th, 9 at Akhna Dam on the 29th and finally 10 at Peyia on the 29th.    

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

Reported from Larnaca Sewage Works [max c50 on 15th], Akhna Dam [max c20 on 29th], Mandria [max c600 on 21st], Coral Bay [max c30 on 20th], 1 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 16th and at Ayia Thekla on 17th and finally 5 at Lymbia on 30th. 

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

A very late bird was 1 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th.

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

There were 18 seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st and 1 there on the 15th.

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

Reported from Ayia Thekla, Akhna Dam [max 40 on 22nd], Ayia Napa, Ayios Nikolaos, Ezousa River area [max c250 on 29th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Lymbia, Mandria, Oroklini and Paphos Lighthouse Area.

Red-throated Pipit    Anthus cervinus

Reports received from Akhna Dam [6 on 1st, 1 on 23rd and 28th and 2 on 29th], Ayios Nikolaos with 1 on 2nd and Larnaca Sewage Works with 2 on 1st and 1 from 9th until 23rd.

Water Pipit    Anthus spinoletta

1 at Ayia Thekla on 17th, up to c5 at Akhna Dam from 1st to 23rd, 1 at Cape Greco on 8th, up to 8 at the Ezousa Pools from 2nd to 8th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 15th and 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.

Yellow Wagtail    Motacilla flava

3 at the Ezousa River on the 7th.

a) Blue-headed Wagtail    Motacilla flava flava

1 at the Ezousa River on the 2nd with 3 at Mandria on the 3rd and 1 on the 5th.

Grey Wagtail    Motacilla cinerea

1’s and 2’s at Adonis Falls, Aspro Dam Pools, Avagas Gorge, Ayios Nikolaos and the Ezousa River.

White Wagtail    Motacilla alba

Widespread and numerous in many locations including Akhna Dam [max c20 on 23rd], Ezousa River [max c50 on 7th], Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Mandria, Oroklini [maximum daily count of 50], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Phasouri Reed Beds, Potamos Liopetri and Strovolos with a max of c60 on 4th.

Wren    Troglodytes troglodytes

Singles at the Avagas Gorge on the 18th and the 29th and a disorientated individual at Cape Greco on the 16th.

Dunnock    Prunella modularis

Just the single report of 2 birds at Akhna Dam on the 15th.

Robin   Erithacus rubecula

Extremely widespread with reports from Akhna Dam [max 5 on 15th], Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa [7 on 30th], Avagas Gorge [30+ on 5th], Cape Greco [5 on 9th], Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Kouklia, Larnaca Sewage Works, Lythrodhonda, Oroklini and Strovolos.

Bluethroat    Luscinia svecica

1 at Oroklini on most dates from 2nd to 21st, 1 at Cape Greco on 9th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 11th and 1 at Akhna Dam from 17th until end of month.

Black Redstart    Phoenicurus ochruros

3 at Anarita Park on 1st, 5 at Asprokremnos Dam on 1st, 2 all month from 2nd at Ayios Nikolaos, 6 in the Avagas Gorge on 4th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 9th, at Akhna on 12th and 23rd, at Phasouri Reed Beds on 15th, at Larnaca Sewage Works on 18th and 30th, at Pomos Point on 23rd, at Oroklini on 27th, at Lymbia on 30th and at Peyia all month. There were 2 at Akhna Dam on 15th with 4 there on 22nd, 2 at Aspro Dam Pools on 25th, 5 at Asprokremnos Dam on 25th and 4 at Ayios Nikolaos on 25th.

Stonechat    Saxicola torquatus

As expected there were widespread and numerous all month with reports from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Ayia Napa, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Cape Greco, Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Lythrodhonda, Oroklini, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Polemi and Potamos Liopetri.

Northern Wheatear    Oenanthe oenanthe 

1 at the Ezousa River on 7th, 2 at Cape Greco on 8th, 1 at Anarita Park on 9th and 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th.

Cyprus Pied Wheatear    Oenanthe cypriaca

1 at Coral Bay on 5th and 1 at Athenou on 26th.   

Desert Wheatear    Oenanthe deserti

A male at Cape Greco on the 8th.

Finsch’s Wheatear    Oenanthe finschii

Anarita Park with a male on 1st and the 9th, Asprokremnos Dam with a female on the 1st, 2 males and a female on the 20th and 1 male on the 25th and from Ayia Varvara with a male on the 15th and a male and a female on the 18th.

Blue Rock Thrush    Monticola solitarius

1 at the Avagas Gorge on the 4th with 2 there on both the 13th and 18th, 5 there on the 21st but just 1 there on the 27th, 1 at Cape Greco on 9th, 2 at Kensington Cliffs on 11th and singles at Peyia on the 20th and the 29th.

Blackbird    Turdus merula

1 at Cape Greco on the 8th and a female at Aspro Dam Pools on the 25th.

Song Thrush    Turdus philomelos

Reported from Akhna Dam from the 12th with a maximum of 6 on the 29th, Athalassa with 1 on 30th, Avagas Gorge with 1 on 29th, Cape Greco with 4 on 9th and from Lymbia with 1 on 30th.

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

2 at Akhna Dam on 15th, 22nd, 29th with 1 on 28th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 23rd, 2 at Athalassa on 30th and 1 at Kannaviou Dam on 25th.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis

8 at Ayia Thekla on 17th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 1st, 10th and 29th, 1 at Ezousa River on 29th, c5 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th to the 22nd and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 8 birds.   

Moustached Warbler    Acrocephalus melanopogon

3 at the Ezousa River on 1st, 2 at Akhna Edam on 28th with 3 on 29th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 29th with 2 there on 30th.

Sedge Warbler    Acrocephalus schoenobaenus

1 at Bishop's Pool on the 11th.

Reed Warbler    Acrocephalus scirpaceus

1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 5th and at Bishop's Pool on the 11th.

Spectacled Warbler    Sylvia conspicillata

Singles at Akhna Dam on 28th, Asprokremnos Dam on 27th, Larnaca Sewage Works on 18th and Lymbia on 30th, 2 at Ayia Napa on 2nd and at Oroklini were it was the maximum daily count, 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1st and 30th with 8 reported from there on the 15th.

Sardinian Warbler    Sylvia melanocephala

1’s and 2’s reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works and Oroklini.

Cyprus Warbler    Sylvia melanothorax

5 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 2nd with 2 on the 8th and 1 in the Avagas Gorge on the 5th.

Blackcap    Sylvia atricapilla

Singles only at Oroklini on 2nd and 6th, Paphos on 17th to 19th, Ezousa River on 29th and all month at Strovolos.

Chiffchaff    Phylloscopus collybita

Numerous and widespread with reports from Akhna Dam [c10 max], Aspro Dam Pools [c25 max], Bishop's Pool [c12 max], Cape Pyla, Ezousa River [c20 max], Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini [4 all month], Paphos, Pera Orinis and Strovolos.

Willow Warbler    Phylloscopus trochilus

6 at the Ezousa River on the 2nd then singles at Peyia on 5th, Bishop's Pool on 11th, Avagas Gorge on 18th and at Aspro Dam Pools on 27th.

Great Tit    Parus major aphrodite

Reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Ayios Nikolaos, Cape Pyla, Kannaviou Dam, Oroklini, Paphos, Peyia, Polemi and Strovolos.

Wallcreeper    Tichodroma muraria

A single bird in the Avagas Gorge on the 29th.

Penduline Tit    Remiz pendulinus

4 at Akhna Dam on the 23rd.

Magpie    Pica pica

Reports from Akhna Dam, Athalassa, Ayios Dhimitrianos with c35 in a roost and 15 other birds nearby and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 3.

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Akhna Dam had 15 all month, 3 all month in Nicosia and heard only at Athalassa.

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

4 at Akhna Dam on 14th, 30 to 50 all month at Athalassa, 7 maximum daily count at Oroklini and 100 to 200 all month at Strovolos.

Starling    Sturnus vulgaris

At the Ezousa River there were c20 on 5th, 11 on 24th and c30 on 26th, 50 at Kouklia on 9th and 25th, 7 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11th, 1 at Mandria on 15th with 52 on 29th and 2 on 30th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 15th and up to 35 at Oroklini from 18th but only 1 remaining on 25th.

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

Reported from Larnaca Sewage Works [10 max], Akhna Dam [6 max] and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 30 birds.

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

Reported from Akhna Dam [10 max], Larnaca Sewage Works [50 max], Ayia Napa [20 max], Oroklini [12 max], Xeros Potamos [6 max], Coral Bay [30 max], Aspro Dam Pools [1], Kannaviou Dam [6 max] and the Ezousa River [1].

Chaffinch    Fringilla coelebs

Reports from Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Xeros Potamos, Akhna Dam, Athalassa, Vrysoulles and Oroklini. Highest counts came from Kannaviou with c50 on both the 27th and the 28th.

Brambling    Fringilla montifringilla

Just one report of a female at Akhna Dam on the 23rd .

Serin    Serinus serinus

Reported from Oroklini, Ezousa River, Cape Greco, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Lythrodhonda, Kannaviou Dam, Asprokremnos Dam, Peyia and Aspro Dam Pools.  Again the highest counts came from the Kannaviou Dam with c50 on 25th and the 28th.

Greenfinch    Carduelis chloris

Small numbers reported from Akhna Dam, Oroklini, Kannaviou Dam, Ayia Thekla and Ayios Dhimitrianos. No count was above c5 birds.

Goldfinch    Carduelis carduelis

Reports from Akhna Dam, Cape Greco, Cape Pyla, Kannaviou Dam, Ayios Dhimitrianos,  Larnaca Sewage Works, Aspro Dam Pools, Kouklia, Mandria and Oroklini. c30 reported Kannaviou Dam on the 17th and Aspro Dam Pools on the 23rd.

Linnet    Carduelis cannabina

Reported from Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Mandria, Larnaca Sewage Works and Pomos Point. The highest count was from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th with c25 birds.

Reed Bunting    Emberiza schoeniclus

10 at Akhna Dam on the 15th, 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 15th, 2 at Cape Greco on 16th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 22nd and 1 at Akhna Dam on the 28th.

Corn Bunting    Miliaria calandra

Less than 10 from Ayia Thekla, Akhna Dam [20 on 29th], Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Nikolaos, Coral Bay, Kannaviou Dam, Kermia Beach [40 on 16th], Potamos Liopetri and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 30 birds.
