Bird Records for November 2003

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

The estimate of the numbers at the Larnaca Sewage Works varied from c125 on the 9^th to only 6 birds on the 30^th, perhaps indicating that birds at the start of the month were merely on passage through the island? Akhna Dam reports indicate a more stable population there with 3 birds reported on the 14^th but between 10 to 20 birds from mid-month to the month’s end. There were 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th, 1 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 30^th and up to 3 at Athalassa all month.

Great Crested Grebe    Podiceps cristatus

The first reports of the year were on the 25^th with single birds at Akhna Dam and at Asprokremnos Dam with a single reported from the latter site also on the 27^th.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

The numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works built up from just 1 on the 1^st to 8 on the 23^rd but just 3 on the 30^th. At Akhna Dam the numbers varied between 1 and 2 all month.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

There were just 4 at Akhna Dam on the 1^st but by the end of the month the numbers had risen to c60. A similar picture emerged at Larnaca Sewage Works with just 2 on the 1^st but c80 were seen during the Field Meeting there on the 23^rd. Asprokremnos Dam had 11 on the 1^st, 14 on the 20^th and 7 on the 25^th.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

2 reported at sea off Kouklia on the 10^th and off Mandria on the 14^th.

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

2 first year birds at Bishop's Pool on the 7^th with just 1 there on the 11^th and 1 at Zakaki Marsh also on the 11^th which was most probably the ‘missing’ Bishop's Pool bird.

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

Only reported from Akhna Dam with 1 present on the 1^st and the 15^th and 10 on the 22^nd.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

One report of a single bird near the Paphos Sewage Treatment Works on the 30^th.

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

10 at Akhna Dam on the 1^st, 6 on the 12^th, 2 on the 14^th, 15^th and 17^th, 6 on the 22^nd and 16 on the 29^th. There was 1 on Ladies Mile on the 7^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th, 1 at Potamos Liopetri on the 8^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th, 2 at Athalassa on the 19^th, 26^th and the 30^th with 2 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 20^th.

Great White Egret   Egretta alba   

At Akhna Dam there was 1 present on the 1^st, 3 on the 23^rd and 2 on the 29^th with 1 reported from Zakaki Marsh until the 15^th.

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

On the 1^st there were 10 reported from Akhna Dam but then only 1 to 3 for the remainder of the month. There was 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 25^th, 3 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 1^st, 1 at Athalassa on the 19^th, 26^th and the 30^th, 2 at Bishop's Pool on the 7^th, c25 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st with just 2 on the 15^th, between 1 and 3 at Oroklini from the 3^rd to the 25^th and 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th.  

Black Stork    Ciconia nigra

An immature was present at Akhna Dam on the 1^st plus there was 1 at Oroklini from the 2^nd through to the 8^th whilst a single bird on the 6^th but no location given, presumably Oroklini?

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

There were 4 present in the fields adjacent to the Paphos Sewage Treatment Works on the 21^st and the 22^nd but then just 3 until the months end.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

The number reported from the Larnaca Sewage Works varied between c500 on the 1^st to c1000 on the 23^rd but reverting to c500 on the 30^th.

White-fronted Goose    Anser albifrons

2 present at the Larnaca Sewage Works from the 15^th until at least the 23^rd.

Lesser White-fronted Goose   Anser erythropus

3 adults were first identified and reported from Akhna Dam by a Cypriot birdwatcher on the 21^st and then seen and photographed by members of the Birdlife Cyprus Field Meeting on the 23^rd. They were still present at the month’s end.

Greylag Goose    Anser anser

2 birds reported from Akhna Dam on the 28^th.

Shelduck    Tadorna tadorna

Only reported from Larnaca Sewage Works with 5 birds on the 9^th increasing to 16 birds by the 23^rd.

Wigeon    Anas penelope

Up to 3 birds present at Aspro Dam Pools all month with c20 reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23^rd and 10 from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th.

Gadwall    Anas strepera

A female was present at Aspro Dam Pools from the 15^th until the month’s end, 1 male at Akhna Dam on the 15^th with 1 female reported from this site on the 29^th and a similar lone female at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23^rd.

Teal    Anas crecca

Up to 5 reported from Aspro Dam Pools al month, 2 at Akhna Dam on the 12^th with 8 on the 23^rd, 14 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 25^th, 1 at Bishop's Pool on the 7^th whilst the numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works built up from just 5 on the 1^st to c200 on the 23^rd but only c20 reported on the 30^th. There were c100 reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

6 at Akhna Dam on 17^th with c20 there on 23^rd, 16 at Asprokremnos Dam on 25^th, 1 heard at Athalassa on 2^nd and 16^th, 38+ there on 19^th, 12+ on 26^th but just 7 there on 30^th, c200 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st reducing to c30 on 30^th, c80 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th with the numbers reducing at this site to just 30 on the 15^th.

Pintail    Anas acuta

Aspro Dam Pools had between 1 and 5 all month, 4 at Asprokremnos Dam on 1^st, up to c20 at Larnaca Sewage Works with the maximum on the 23^rd and 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th.

Garganey    Anas querquedula

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st with 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 8^th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

Between 1 and 2 at Aspro Dam Pools all month, up to c400 at Larnaca Sewage Works all month but only c50 reported from there on the 30^th and c20 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th.

Red-crested Pochard    Netta rufina

A lone female arrived at Aspro Dam Pools on the 20^th and has been present every day since plus a male bird arrived at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th and likewise was still present at the end of the month.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

A male was present at the Aspro Dam Pools from the 7^th until the 30^th with 2 males and 2 females being reported on the 25^th and a lone female joining the male on the 30^th whilst at the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 50 reported on 15^th, increasing to c120 on the 23^rd but only 12 on the 30^th.

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

A male was seen on and off at the Aspro Dam Pools from the 1^st to the 29^th whilst at the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 5 on the 15^th until the 22^nd.

Tufted Duck    Aythya fuligula

2 at Akhna Dam on the 23^rd, up to 5 at Larnaca Sewage Works from the 15^th until the 23^rd with just 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.

Scaup    Aythya marila

5 were seen together at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th. 

The full Field Notes provided were accepted by your Records and Rarities Committee as representing the 6^th record for Cyprus. 

Honey Buzzard    Pernis apivorus

Extremely late records were 1 on 2^nd and 1 on 9^th but unfortunately the observer omitted to say just where they were seen and 1 at Mandria  on the 30^th.

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

8 were seen at Kensington Cliffs on the 11^th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

1’s and 2’s most of the month from Akhna Dam, singles at Aspro Dam Pools on the 1^st and the 6^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th with 4 there on the 15^th and just 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

There was a wintering female at Akhna Dam reported from the 1^st to the 23^rd with 2 present on the 24^th, 1 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 7^th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on both 11^th and 15^th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 24^th.

Goshawk    Accipiter gentilis

Single birds at Adonis Falls on the 17^th and at Peyia on the 29^th.

Sparrowhawk    Accipiter nisus

1 at Adonis Falls on the 17^th, 1 at Akhna Dam on the 12^th to the 21^st, a female at Aspro Dam Pools on both the 29^th and the 30^th and 1 bird at Avagas Gorge on the 5^th and the 27^th.

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo   

B.b.buteo

Birds reported as this ssp were reported from Akrotiri Reed Beds with 1 on 7^th, Akrotiri Salt Lake with 1 on 11^th, Cape Greco with 1, with an injured wing, on 9^th, 1 at Chlorakas on 1^st, 1 at Ezousa River on 22^nd, 1 at Kermia Beach on 16^th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 15^th and 1 at Vrysoulles on 12^th.   

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

2 over-flew Oroklini on the 2^nd, 1 at Pissouri on the 7^th and 1 at Akhna Dam intermittently between the 15^th and the 28^th.

Buzzard spp.

2 birds were reported as Rough-legged Buzzards Buteo lagopus at Ayios Dhimitrianos on the 10^th but unfortunately the accompanying Field Reports did not conclusively prove this identification.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

There was one report of a single bird at Aspro Dam Pools on the 14^th.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

1’s and 2’s reported from Akhna Dam, Athalassa, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Ezousa River, Lymbia, Oroklini, Paphos, Polemi and Strovolos.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

There was 1 female at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 1^st and the 20^th, a female at near the Paphos Sewage Treatment Works on the 1^st and the 5^th, a female at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7^th and a male at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 29^th.

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

A single bird was seen at Cape Pyla on the 1^st.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus

Single birds were reported from Avagas Gorge on the 27^th and from Akhna Dam on the 28^th and the 29^th.    

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Lymbia and Oroklini. The highest number seen was the maximum daily count at Oroklini of 45 birds.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

3 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 2^nd, 1 there on the 7^th, a pair down the Ezousa River on the 29^th, 1 at Kouklia on the 18^th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 3 birds.

Quail    Coturnix coturnix

2 at Akhna Dam on the 1^st, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th and 22^nd with 2 seen at Coral Bay on the 19^th.

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

1 at Akhna Dam on 22^nd and the 28^th with 2 there on the 25^th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 28^th.

Little Crake    Porzana parva

A male at the Ezousa River on the 1^st.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reported in small numbers from Akhna Dam [c10 on 23^rd and 28^th], Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Bishop's Pool [c20 on 23^rd] and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of only 2 birds.

Coot    Fulica atra

Reported from Akhna Dam [c50 on 28^th], Aspro Dam Pools [24 on 23^rd], Athalassa [9+ on 30^th], Bishop's Pool [14 on 7^th], Larnaca Sewage Works [c100 on 15^th and 23^rd] and Phasouri Reed Beds with 20 on the 15^th.

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

There were 7 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st but only 1 there on the 9^th and the only other record is of 1 at Akhna Dam on the 28^th.

Avocet    Recurvirostra avosetta

4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st with only 2 seen there on the 23^rd.

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

2 to 6 heard on clear nights from Ayios Nikolaos from the 1^st with 12 seen there on the 12^th and 3 seen at Mandria on the 14^th.

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

1 at Akhna Dam on the 6^th and 10^th and 2 at Ladies Mile on the 15^th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st with 1 there on 15^th and 3 at Akhna Dam on 22^nd with 1 from the 23^rd to at least the 27^th.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

Singles at Ayia Thekla on 17^th and at Akhna Dam on 26^th, 11 at Ayia Thekla on 2^nd with 5 there on 16^th, 15 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st, c20 on 15^th and 15 on 23^rd with c20 at Ladies Mile on 7^th and 8 on the 15^th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

Up to 6 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on most visits all month with 5 at the beach at Mandria on the 3^rd.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

Numbers at the Paphos Lighthouse Area peaked at 39 on the 19^th, 1 at Mandria on the 8^th with 14 there on the 24^th and 2 seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th.

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus

Only reported from Akhna Dam with 2 on 5^th and 12^th and 1 on 23^rd and the 28^th.  

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Present at Akhna Dam for most of the month with a peak of c40 on the 8^th, at the Ezousa River area with peaks of c30 on the 5^th, 6^th and the 28^th, 2 at Kouklia on 16^th, 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st, at Mandria for most of the month with a peak of 24 on the 15^th, at Oroklini with 2 on 20^th and 30^th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 15^th and 1 at Pomos Point on the 23^rd. 

Sanderling    Calidris alba

Most unusual sightings were c80 at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 25^th with 30 there the following day, the 26^th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

Reported from Akhna Dam all month with a high of 5 on the 22^nd, Ladies Mile with 3 on 7^th and 10 on 15^th, Larnaca Salt Lake with 2 on both 25^th and 30^th, Larnaca Sewage Works all month with a high of c50 on 23^rd and Oroklini with singles on 19^th, 21^st and the 25^th.

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

Only reported from Akhna Dam where they were seen all month with a high of 7 birds present on the 18^th.

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

3 birds at Ladies Mile on the 15^th.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

Akhna Dam had 1 bird from the 12^th to at least the 27^th, 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 25^th with 41 on 30^th and Larnaca Sewage Works with c15 on 1^st and c40 on 23^rd.

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Singles at Akhna Dam on 6^th and 23^rd and 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st with 1 on 9^th, 2 on 15^th and 1 on 23^rd.

Jack Snipe    Lymnocryptes minimus

A single bird disturbed from the still-wet Ezousa Pools on the 2^nd.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

There was 1 reported from Akhna Dam on the 12^th to the 21^st but 10 were reported from there on the 22^nd. 3 were seen during the Field Meeting at Akhna Dam on the 23^rd with 1 or 2 present there until the end of the month. 2 were seen at the Ezousa Pools on the 3^rd, 1 at Oroklini most of the month from the 3^rd and 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th.

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

A juvenile was reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st. 

Curlew    Numenius arquata

Phasouri Reed Beds had 1 on 7^th and 2 on 11^th, Larnaca Salt Lake 8 on 12^th and Larnaca Sewage Works with 1 on 15^th and 10 present on 22^nd to at least 23^rd.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

15 present at Larnaca Sewage Works from 1^st to at least the 9^th.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

Up to 3 at Akhna Dam from 12^th to 28^th, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st with 1 on 9^th, 1 at Oroklini from 2^nd to 4^th with 2 present there from 7^th to 16^th and 1 at Potamos Liopetri on 8^th.

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st with 1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 8^th and 2 on 12^th.

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st with 1 at Akhna Dam on the 23^rd.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

1 at the Ezousa Pools on 3^rd and 1 present at Akhna Dam on the 12^th, 14^th and the 23^rd.

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

2 at Akhna Dam on the 18^th is the only report this month.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

Seen at only the Paphos Lighthouse Area with 1 on both the 19^th and the 28^th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

A single report of a single bird at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 19^th is the only report submitted.

Mediterranean Gull    Larus melanocephalus

There was an immature at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23^rd.

Little Gull    Larus minutus

Present at the Larnaca Sewage Works with a single bird on the 15^th but 2 birds there on the 23^rd and a single bird at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 19^th.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

The numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works increased from c150 on the 1^st to c600 on the 23^rd but only c100 reported from there on the 30^th and 2 at Oroklini on 15^th, 4 on the 2^nd and 3 on the 27^th.

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st, 1 on 22^nd and 2 on 23^rd are the only sightings this month.

Audouin’s Gull    Larus audouinii

An adult at Kermia Beach on the 16^th is the only report.

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

1 at Mandria on the 8^th.

L.f.heuglini

2 at Mandria on the 8^th, 2 on the 22^nd there with just 1 on the 26^th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans

Up to c15 at 5the Larnaca Sewage Works all month. 

L.c.michahellis

Up to c150 at Mandria reported from 19^th to 22^nd appeared to be this ssp [or spp – depending on who you read].   

Armenian Gull    Larus armenicus

A lone adult was present at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th and the 22^nd.  

Sandwich Tern    Sterna sandvicensis

The only report is a very strange and unusual report of 1 inland at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 25^th.

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

Up to 3 were present at Akhna Dam from the 5^th to the 26^th with 2 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st with 1 there on the 15^th.

Stock Dove    Columba oenas

A single bird at Akhna Dam on the 23^rd.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Reported from Akhna Dam [max. of c10 on 12^th and 22^nd], Athalassa with a maximum of 4 on 30^th and Vrysoulles with c60 on 28^th.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Reported from just Oroklini with 2 on 1^st and 1 on 11^th and 12^th and from Strovolos with 2 or 3 all month.

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Singles at Paphos on 2^nd and 3^rd, Tseri on 19^th and Achelia on 24^th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

2 heard most nights at Ayios Nikolaos from the 1^st, 1 at Oroklini on most dates from the 11^th, 6 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 15^th, 1 at Athalassa on the 16^th, 2 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 20^th with 1 on 27^th and 1 heard at Athalassa on the 26^th. There was 1 at Peyia all month.

Long-eared Owl    Asio otus

3 at Athalassa on 16^th and 19^th, 4 there on 26^th and 1 on the 30^th.

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

2 at Akhna Dam on 1^st and 14^th, 1 there on 15^th and 23^rd with 3 there on 22^nd, 1 at Ayia Thekla on 2^nd and 2 at Potamos Liopetri on the 8^th.

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 30^th.

Lesser Short-toed Lark    Calandrella rufescens

3 birds at Mandria on the 3^rd and on the 5^th 7 birds present.

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

Up to 4 birds reported from Larnaca Sewage Works, Lymbia and Mandria with a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 30 birds.

Woodlark    Lullula arborea

1 at Oroklini on the 3^rd, 6 at Akhna Dam on the 12^th, 1 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 12^th, 2 at Peyia on the 14^th, 2 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 21^st, c15 at Akhna Dam on the 22^nd and the 23^rd, 8 at Ayios Nikolaos on the 25^th, 9 at Akhna Dam on the 29^th and finally 10 at Peyia on the 29^th.    

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

Reported from Larnaca Sewage Works [max c50 on 15^th], Akhna Dam [max c20 on 29^th], Mandria [max c600 on 21^st], Coral Bay [max c30 on 20^th], 1 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 16^th and at Ayia Thekla on 17^th and finally 5 at Lymbia on 30^th. 

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

A very late bird was 1 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th.

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

There were 18 seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st and 1 there on the 15^th.

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

Reported from Ayia Thekla, Akhna Dam [max 40 on 22^nd], Ayia Napa, Ayios Nikolaos, Ezousa River area [max c250 on 29^th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Lymbia, Mandria, Oroklini and Paphos Lighthouse Area.

Red-throated Pipit    Anthus cervinus

Reports received from Akhna Dam [6 on 1^st, 1 on 23^rd and 28^th and 2 on 29^th], Ayios Nikolaos with 1 on 2^nd and Larnaca Sewage Works with 2 on 1^st and 1 from 9^th until 23^rd.

Water Pipit    Anthus spinoletta

1 at Ayia Thekla on 17^th, up to c5 at Akhna Dam from 1^st to 23^rd, 1 at Cape Greco on 8^th, up to 8 at the Ezousa Pools from 2^nd to 8^th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 15^th and 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.

Yellow Wagtail    Motacilla flava

3 at the Ezousa River on the 7^th.

a) Blue-headed Wagtail    Motacilla flava flava

1 at the Ezousa River on the 2^nd with 3 at Mandria on the 3^rd and 1 on the 5^th.

Grey Wagtail    Motacilla cinerea

1’s and 2’s at Adonis Falls, Aspro Dam Pools, Avagas Gorge, Ayios Nikolaos and the Ezousa River.

White Wagtail    Motacilla alba

Widespread and numerous in many locations including Akhna Dam [max c20 on 23^rd], Ezousa River [max c50 on 7^th], Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Mandria, Oroklini [maximum daily count of 50], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Phasouri Reed Beds, Potamos Liopetri and Strovolos with a max of c60 on 4^th.

Wren    Troglodytes troglodytes

Singles at the Avagas Gorge on the 18^th and the 29^th and a disorientated individual at Cape Greco on the 16^th.

Dunnock    Prunella modularis

Extremely widespread with reports from Akhna Dam [max 5 on 15^th], Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa [7 on 30^th], Avagas Gorge [30+ on 5^th], Cape Greco [5 on 9^th], Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Kouklia, Larnaca Sewage Works, Lythrodhonda, Oroklini and Strovolos.

Bluethroat    Luscinia svecica

1 at Oroklini on most dates from 2^nd to 21^st, 1 at Cape Greco on 9^th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 11^th and 1 at Akhna Dam from 17^th until end of month.

Black Redstart    Phoenicurus ochruros

3 at Anarita Park on 1^st, 5 at Asprokremnos Dam on 1^st, 2 all month from 2^nd at Ayios Nikolaos, 6 in the Avagas Gorge on 4^th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 9^th, at Akhna on 12^th and 23^rd, at Phasouri Reed Beds on 15^th, at Larnaca Sewage Works on 18^th and 30^th, at Pomos Point on 23^rd, at Oroklini on 27^th, at Lymbia on 30^th and at Peyia all month. There were 2 at Akhna Dam on 15^th with 4 there on 22^nd, 2 at Aspro Dam Pools on 25^th, 5 at Asprokremnos Dam on 25^th and 4 at Ayios Nikolaos on 25^th.

Stonechat    Saxicola torquatus

As expected there were widespread and numerous all month with reports from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Ayia Napa, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Cape Greco, Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Lythrodhonda, Oroklini, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Polemi and Potamos Liopetri.

Northern Wheatear    Oenanthe oenanthe 

1 at the Ezousa River on 7^th, 2 at Cape Greco on 8^th, 1 at Anarita Park on 9^th and 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th.

Cyprus Pied Wheatear    Oenanthe cypriaca

1 at Coral Bay on 5^th and 1 at Athenou on 26^th.   

Desert Wheatear    Oenanthe deserti

A male at Cape Greco on the 8^th.

Finsch’s Wheatear    Oenanthe finschii

Anarita Park with a male on 1^st and the 9^th, Asprokremnos Dam with a female on the 1^st, 2 males and a female on the 20^th and 1 male on the 25^th and from Ayia Varvara with a male on the 15^th and a male and a female on the 18^th.

Blue Rock Thrush    Monticola solitarius

1 at the Avagas Gorge on the 4^th with 2 there on both the 13^th and 18^th, 5 there on the 21^st but just 1 there on the 27^th, 1 at Cape Greco on 9^th, 2 at Kensington Cliffs on 11^th and singles at Peyia on the 20^th and the 29^th.

Blackbird    Turdus merula

1 at Cape Greco on the 8^th and a female at Aspro Dam Pools on the 25^th.

Song Thrush    Turdus philomelos

Reported from Akhna Dam from the 12^th with a maximum of 6 on the 29^th, Athalassa with 1 on 30^th, Avagas Gorge with 1 on 29^th, Cape Greco with 4 on 9^th and from Lymbia with 1 on 30^th.

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

2 at Akhna Dam on 15^th, 22^nd, 29^th with 1 on 28^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 23^rd, 2 at Athalassa on 30^th and 1 at Kannaviou Dam on 25^th.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis

8 at Ayia Thekla on 17^th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 1^st, 10^th and 29^th, 1 at Ezousa River on 29^th, c5 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th to the 22^nd and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 8 birds.   

Moustached Warbler    Acrocephalus melanopogon

3 at the Ezousa River on 1^st, 2 at Akhna Edam on 28^th with 3 on 29^th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 29^th with 2 there on 30^th.

Sedge Warbler    Acrocephalus schoenobaenus

1 at Bishop's Pool on the 11^th.

Reed Warbler    Acrocephalus scirpaceus

1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 5^th and at Bishop's Pool on the 11^th.

Spectacled Warbler    Sylvia conspicillata

Singles at Akhna Dam on 28^th, Asprokremnos Dam on 27^th, Larnaca Sewage Works on 18^th and Lymbia on 30^th, 2 at Ayia Napa on 2^nd and at Oroklini were it was the maximum daily count, 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 1^st and 30^th with 8 reported from there on the 15^th.

Sardinian Warbler    Sylvia melanocephala

1’s and 2’s reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works and Oroklini.

Cyprus Warbler    Sylvia melanothorax

5 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 2^nd with 2 on the 8^th and 1 in the Avagas Gorge on the 5^th.

Blackcap    Sylvia atricapilla

Singles only at Oroklini on 2^nd and 6^th, Paphos on 17^th to 19^th, Ezousa River on 29^th and all month at Strovolos.

Chiffchaff    Phylloscopus collybita

Numerous and widespread with reports from Akhna Dam [c10 max], Aspro Dam Pools [c25 max], Bishop's Pool [c12 max], Cape Pyla, Ezousa River [c20 max], Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini [4 all month], Paphos, Pera Orinis and Strovolos.

Willow Warbler    Phylloscopus trochilus

6 at the Ezousa River on the 2^nd then singles at Peyia on 5^th, Bishop's Pool on 11^th, Avagas Gorge on 18^th and at Aspro Dam Pools on 27^th.

Great Tit    Parus major aphrodite

Reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Ayios Nikolaos, Cape Pyla, Kannaviou Dam, Oroklini, Paphos, Peyia, Polemi and Strovolos.

Wallcreeper    Tichodroma muraria

A single bird in the Avagas Gorge on the 29^th.

Penduline Tit    Remiz pendulinus

4 at Akhna Dam on the 23^rd.

Magpie    Pica pica

Reports from Akhna Dam, Athalassa, Ayios Dhimitrianos with c35 in a roost and 15 other birds nearby and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 3.

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Akhna Dam had 15 all month, 3 all month in Nicosia and heard only at Athalassa.

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

4 at Akhna Dam on 14^th, 30 to 50 all month at Athalassa, 7 maximum daily count at Oroklini and 100 to 200 all month at Strovolos.

Starling    Sturnus vulgaris

At the Ezousa River there were c20 on 5^th, 11 on 24^th and c30 on 26^th, 50 at Kouklia on 9^th and 25^th, 7 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11^th, 1 at Mandria on 15^th with 52 on 29^th and 2 on 30^th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 15^th and up to 35 at Oroklini from 18^th but only 1 remaining on 25th.

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

Reported from Larnaca Sewage Works [10 max], Akhna Dam [6 max] and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 30 birds.

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

Reported from Akhna Dam [10 max], Larnaca Sewage Works [50 max], Ayia Napa [20 max], Oroklini [12 max], Xeros Potamos [6 max], Coral Bay [30 max], Aspro Dam Pools [1], Kannaviou Dam [6 max] and the Ezousa River [1].

Chaffinch    Fringilla coelebs

Reports from Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Xeros Potamos, Akhna Dam, Athalassa, Vrysoulles and Oroklini. Highest counts came from Kannaviou with c50 on both the 27^th and the 28^th.

Brambling    Fringilla montifringilla

Just one report of a female at Akhna Dam on the 23^rd .

Serin    Serinus serinus

Reported from Oroklini, Ezousa River, Cape Greco, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Lythrodhonda, Kannaviou Dam, Asprokremnos Dam, Peyia and Aspro Dam Pools.  Again the highest counts came from the Kannaviou Dam with c50 on 25^th and the 28^th.

Greenfinch    Carduelis chloris

Small numbers reported from Akhna Dam, Oroklini, Kannaviou Dam, Ayia Thekla and Ayios Dhimitrianos. No count was above c5 birds.

Goldfinch    Carduelis carduelis

Reports from Akhna Dam, Cape Greco, Cape Pyla, Kannaviou Dam, Ayios Dhimitrianos,  Larnaca Sewage Works, Aspro Dam Pools, Kouklia, Mandria and Oroklini. c30 reported Kannaviou Dam on the 17^th and Aspro Dam Pools on the 23^rd.

Linnet    Carduelis cannabina

Reported from Cape Pyla, Ezousa River, Mandria, Larnaca Sewage Works and Pomos Point. The highest count was from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th with c25 birds.

Reed Bunting    Emberiza schoeniclus

10 at Akhna Dam on the 15^th, 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 15^th, 2 at Cape Greco on 16^th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 22^nd and 1 at Akhna Dam on the 28^th.

Corn Bunting    Miliaria calandra

Less than 10 from Ayia Thekla, Akhna Dam [20 on 29^th], Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Nikolaos, Coral Bay, Kannaviou Dam, Kermia Beach [40 on 16^th], Potamos Liopetri and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 30 birds.
