Bird Records for October 2003

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Between 1 and 12 were reported from Akhna Dam with the maximum on the 5th, up to 8 at Aspro Dam Pools with the maximum on the 15th, 3 heard at Athalassa on the 19th, 5 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13th and a maximum of c110 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

1 at Akhna Dam on the 9th and the 28th with 2 on the 20th whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 1 from the 5th to the 11th with 3 then reported until the 26th but just the 1 again on the 27th.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

The first was at Asprokremnos Dam on the 12th with 4 there on the 28th, 1 at Ayia Thekla on the 19th with the long-stayer at Bishop's Pool reported on the 16th.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

The Mandria Rocks held a maximum of 7 on the 3rd, Kensington Cliffs maximum was 6 on the 5th and 3 were at Petra Tou Romiou on the 17th.

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

There was 1 adult at Ladies Mile on the 13th whilst a bird was seen flying over Limassol on the same date [same bird?] and there was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 26th.

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

At Akhna Dam there were 6 on the 2nd, 1 on the 5th and 3 on the 11th whilst Evretou Dam had just the 1 on the 11th.

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

Singles at Oroklini on the 1st and the 2nd, Zakaki Marsh on the 13th and the 16th and Aspro Dam Pools on the 22nd.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

Just 2 reports of single birds at Akhna Dam on the 11th and the 17th.

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

65+ flew over the Akamas near Latchi on the 14th, Akhna Dam had up to 8 all month with the maximum being on the 5th, Asprokremnos Dam had just 1 on the 22nd, Athalassa had 1 on the 19th, Ayia Thekla 1 on the 25th, Paphos Lighthouse Area 1 on the 25th, Zakaki Marsh 2 on the 16th with 1 on the 17th whilst at Larnaca Sewage Works there were c20 on 4th, c40 on 5th, 30 on 11th, 60+ on 18th and 46 on the 26th. 

Great White Egret   Egretta alba

Widespread this month with singles at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 11th, 22nd and the

29th, Zakaki Marsh on 16th, 17th and 29th, Akhna Dam on 17th, Phasouri Reed Beds on

17th, Aspro Dam Pools on 29th and the Ezousa River on the 29th too.

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

There was 1 at Akhna Dam all month but 10 were reported from there during the Field Meeting on the 5th, up to 3 at Asprokremnos Dam al month, 1 at Athalassa on 12th, 1 at Athenou on 28th, 1 at Ayia Thekla on 19th, 1 at Yermasoya Dam on 21st, up to 40 at Larnaca Sewage Works with the maximum on the 18th, singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13th and 17th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 1st and finally 3 flocks of 30, 42 and 26 over Smyies on the 14th.

Purple Heron    Ardea purpurea

There were 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1st with 9+ in a Grey Heron flock over Smyies on the 14th.

Black Stork    Ciconia nigra

There was 1 at Larnaca on the 17th but the actual site was not reported.

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

4 at Achelia Dam on the 2nd, 1 at the Ezousa River on the 13th with 4 flying overhead there on the 18th and 1 again at this site on the 25th.

Glossy Ibis    Plegadis falcinellus

Just the one report of 2 birds at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 1st.

Spoonbill    Platalea leucorodia

There were 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1st whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 8 on 4th and 5th, 15 on 11th and 6 on 18th, 22nd and the 26th.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

Only at Larnaca Sewage Works with 460 reported on the 5th and c300 on the 18th.

Wigeon    Anas penelope

There was a female at Aspro Dam Pools on the 19th and 21st whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 4 birds on the 5th, 2 on the 22nd and 3 on the 26th.

Teal    Anas crecca

4 at Akhna Dam on 5th, up to 7 at Aspro Dam Pools, c200 reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on 5th but only c10 on 18th and 10+ at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1st with 80+ there on 13th, c70 on 17th and c140 on 23rd.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

8 at Akhna Dam on 24th with 6 on 30th, 27 at Evretou Dam on 14th and c200 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th with c400 being reported there the following day, the 5th.

Pintail    Anas acuta

Present at Aspro Dam Pools from the 9th when just 1 bird was reported with 6 on the 16th and 17th, 12 on the 18th dropping down to 4 or 5 birds by the end of the month. Larnaca Sewage Works had 2 on the 4th with just 1 seen on the 5th, Phasouri Reed Beds having 5 on the 13th and 6 on the 23rd whilst Zakaki Marsh had just a single bird on the 17th.

Garganey    Anas querquedula

Late-stayers included 1 Aspro Dam Pools from 12th to 17th, c20 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1st and 2 at Zakaki Marsh on 13th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

Numbers built up at Larnaca Sewage Works from just 2 on the 4th to c100 on the 5th with this number of c100 still being present on the 18th. Phasouri Reed Beds had 4 on the 1st and the 13th but had dropped to a single bird by the 17th.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

2 birds at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18th.

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There was [is] a male present at Aspro Dam Pools from the 17th until the end of the month.  

Honey Buzzard    Pernis apivorus

12 at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 1st, 5 at Akrotiri on the 5th, 7 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5th, 2 at Kensington Cliffs on the 5th, 3 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 7th, 1 over the Akamas on the 14th and finally 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 23rd.

Black Kite    Milvus migrans

2 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5th with singles at Anarita Park on the 7th and Akhna Dam on the 17th.

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

5 reported from Vrecha on the 9th and 7 from Salamiou on the 15th.

Black Vulture    Aegypius monachus

The long-stayer was at Salamiou on the 15th.

Short-toed Eagle    Circaetus gallicus

1 at Mandria on the 19th, seen at ground level until it rose on thermals out of sight and then, with 2 the next day at Akrotiri Reed Beds.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

1 at Achelia Dam on the 16th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 3rd and 5th, 5 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 5th with 2 on 23rd, 2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 1st, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on 15th and 28th, 2 at Ezousa River on 30th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th, 1 at Mandria on 2nd and 12th and 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13th and 17th with 8 on the 23rd.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

2 females at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 1st and 1 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5th.

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

There was an adult male at Ayia Napa on the 11th.

Montagu’s Harrier    Circus pygargus

1 juv at Akhna Dam on the 2nd and the 25th with 2 juvs at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th.

Single birds as either Pallid/Montagu’s at Akamas on the 14th and at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th.

Goshawk    Accipiter gentilis

Singles at Agros on 1st, Smyies on 14th and Arminou Dam on 15th.

Sparrowhawk    Accipiter nisus

Singles at Asprokremnos Dam on 16th, Evretou Dam on 14th, Ezousa River on 29th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 30th with 2 birds present at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th and at Smyies on the 14th.

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo   

B.b.buteo

13 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5th, singles at Chirokitia on 1st, Kouklia on 12th, Mandria on 2nd, Oroklini on 1st and Vrysoulles on 2nd.

B.b.vulpinus

3 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 8th.

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

2 at Ayios Dhimitrianos on 15th and 17th, 3 at Trachypedoula on 15th and 1 at Kidasi on the 17th.

Rough-legged Buzzard    Buteo lagopus

Unfortunately the Field Notes for a report of this species at Kannaviou on the 29th were not accepted as proving beyond a reasonable doubt, the identification of this very rare, winter visitor.

Buzzard spp.

2 at Pentalia on 10th, 1 at Kannaviou on 27th and 1 at Tsadha on 29th were not identified to spp level.

Lesser Spotted Eagle    Aquila pomarina

A juv that was observed at Smyies on the 14th following on behind a Honey Buzzard.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

A juv at Achelia Dam on the 8th and 2 adults at Vrecha on the 9th are the only reported sightings.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

Reported from most sites across the island the maximum being 5 at Mandria on the 2nd and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 2 birds.

Red-footed Falcon    Falco vespertinus

Reported from Akhna Dam with 12on 2nd, 1 on 24th and 25th, Akrotiri Reed Beds with 4 on 5th and c10 on 23rd, Asprokremnos Dam with 4 on 7th, Droushia with 2 on 8th, Mandria with 2 on 2nd, c40 on 3rd, c40 on 4th, 2 on 6th, 1 on 9th, 2 on 11th and 1 on 12th, Phasouri Reed Beds with 5 on 1st, 13 on 17th and c12 on 23rd, Vrysoulles with 5 on 2nd and finally Zakaki Marsh with 1 on the 17th.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

There was 1 at Vrysoulles on the 2nd and 1 down the Ezousa River on the 30th.

Hobby    Falco subbuteo

Reported from Akhna Dam with 1 on 19th, Asprokremnos Dam with singles on 12th and 18th, Ayios Nikolaos with 1 on 20th and 21st, Mandria with 1 on 2nd, Phasouri Reed Beds with 3 on 13th and 4 on 17th and finally Zakaki Marsh with 1 on the 16th.

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

1 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 5th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 5 at Asprokremnos Dam on 7th with 4 on 12th, c15 at Kensington Cliffs on 5th with 27+ on 13th, 2 at Mandria 3rd, 2 at Petra Tou Romiou on 17th, singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on 17th and 23rd and 1 at Smyies on 14th.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus

Singles at Akhna Dam on 25th, Asprokremnos Dam on 18th, Ayia Varvara on 3rd, Koilineia on 16th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 18th and the 30th. 3 were seen at Episkopi on the 16th and 1 at Trachypedoula on the 15th. There was one of the subspecies calidus seen and photographed at Mandria by JJG on the 29th and 30th. 

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from Asprokremnos Dam with 8 on the 12th, Avagas Gorge with 4 on the 26th, Kouklia with 12 on the 12th, c40 at Mandria on the 2nd with 4 on the 8th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 25 birds.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

Singles at Akhna Dam on the 21st and the 26th, 2 at Akrotiri on the 5th, 5 at the Ezousa River on the 30th, 1 at Polemi on the 2nd, 2 at Mandria on the 2nd with 1 on the 8th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 7 birds.

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

Single birds at Kouklia on the 12th and 16th and at Aspro Dam Pools on the 28th with 3 heard at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13th and 5 heard there on the 17th.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa and Oroklini with a maximum of 12 birds at Aspro Dam Pools on the 12th and the 15th.

Coot    Fulica atra

Reported from Akhna Dam [maximum c20 on 5th], Aspro Dam Pools [maximum 5 on 15th], Athalassa with 2 on 4th, Larnaca Sewage Works with c150 on 5th and 17 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th.

Common Crane    Grus grus

Just 2 reports, there were 8 seen at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 1st and c40 at Vrysoulles on the 4th.

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

1 at Akhna Dam on the 5th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4th, 5 on the 5th, 6 on the 11th, 4 on the 18th and 7 on the 26th and at Phasouri Reed Beds 3 on the 1st with singles on the 5th, 13th and the 17th.

Avocet    Recurvirostra avosetta

Up to 5 birds reported from Larnaca Sewage Works from the 4th until the end of the month.  

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

3 at Akhna Dam on the 2nd, 20+ at Ayia Napa on the 11th, 2+ heard almost every night from the 13th at Ayios Nikolaos, singles at Dhekalia on the 13th and the 15th, 8 at Mandria on the 3rd with 15 there on the 12th and c60 reported from the Kato Paphos roost on the 1st.

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

At Akhna Dam there were 5 on 2nd, 3 on 3rd, 9 on 15th, 2 on 21st, 1 on 25th and 5 on 29th with up to 2 birds at Oroklini on and off between the 7th and the 25th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

At Akhna Dam there were 2 on the 3rd, 1 lame bird from the 4th to the 15th and 4 birds on the 24th, Ladies Mile had 3 on the 5th with a similar number at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4th whilst single birds were seen at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 8th and at Mandria on the 21st.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

There were up to 4 at Akhna Dam from the 4th until the 29th, 19 at Ayia Thekla on the 19th, 175 at Ladies Mile on the 5th with c120 on 13th and only 15 on the 16th and at Larnaca Sewage Works c20 were reported on the 5th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

The numbers at the Paphos Lighthouse Area varied from 1 to 7 with the higher number present on the 27th. The only report away from this traditional site was of 1 bird at Ayia Thekla on the 19th.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

Single birds at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 8th and 18th, 4 at Mandria on the 29th and 1 at Ayia Nikolaos on the 31st.

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus

There were 7 at Akhna Dam on the 5th and the 8th but only 4 on the 15th whilst Oroklini had between 1 and 13 between the 1st and the 28th the maximum occurring on the 11th plus there was 1 bird reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13th.      

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Present at Akhna Dam from the 8th until the 25th with a maximum of 31 birds on the 13th, 14 at Ayios Giorgios on 29th, c20 near the Ezousa Pools on the 29th and 30th, up to 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 5th and 27th, 3 at Mandria on the 21st with 28 on the 29th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1st, 10 on 13th but only 1 on 23rd and 3 at Zakaki Marsh on the 17th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1st, 1 at Akhna Dam on 2nd, 1 at Oroklini on most dates between 3rd and 11th, c10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 5th, 31at Ladies Mile on 13th with 39 on 17th, 2 at Akhna Dam on 21st with 1 on 25th and finally c25 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 26th.

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

2 at Achelia Dam on 3rd, 2 down the Ezousa River on 3rd, 4 at Akhna Dam on 4th, 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 5th, 2 at Zakaki Marsh on 5th with 2 at Akhna Dam on the 8th and 3 on the 15th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 17th, 1 at the Ezousa Pools on 19th and finally 2 at Akhna Dam on both the 25th and the 27th.

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Just the one sighting during the Field Trip to Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th with 2 birds present.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

3 on Ladies Mile on 1st, 1 at Akhna Dam on 3rd, c10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th

with 2 there on 5th, 17 at Ladies Mile on 13th with 15 on the 17th and 1 heard at Larnaca

Sewage Works on the 26th.

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Quite scarce this month with 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 1st, c12 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th, 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 5th with 5 on 13th, 7 at Zakaki Marsh on 17th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 23rd and then 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 24th with c15 there on the 26th.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

Akhna Dam had 1 on 5th, 3 on 8th and 32 [yes, 32!] on 25th with just 1 on the 30th, singles at Aspro Dam Pools on 17th and 21st with 2 on 22nd, 1 at Cape Greco on 12th, singles at the Ezousa Pools on 4th, 11th but 2 on 2nd, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13th with 2 on 16th, 17th and 23rd, a maximum daily count at Oroklini of just a single bird and finally 30+ at Zakaki Marsh on the 17th.

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

A single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 22nd.

Curlew    Numenius arquata

Larnaca Sewage Works had 5 on 19th, 6 each on 22nd and 24th with 1 at Akhna Dam on the 25th.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Larnaca Sewage Works had c5 on 4th, 2 on 5th, 18 on 26th with 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 17th.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

2 at Akhna Dam on 3rd with 4 on both 29th and 30th, 1 at Ayia Thekla on 19th, c5 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th and 1 on 5th and 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13th.

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4th but an impressive 21 on the 30th with just a single sighting away from this site, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th.

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4th with 2 there on the 26th.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Singles at Achelia Dam on 3rd and Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th with 2 at the Ezousa Pools on the 3rd, 4th, 11th and the 13th.

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Single birds at Akhna Dam on 2nd, Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th, Phasouri Reed Beds on the 5th and the 17th with 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1st and 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13th.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

All sightings are of single birds seen at Akhna Dam on 3rd and 29th, Ayia Thekla on 19th and Paphos Lighthouse Area on 27th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

Seen at only Paphos Lighthouse Area with 5 on 17th, 6 on 18th, 1 on 25th and 7 on the 27th.

Red-necked Phalarope    Phalaropus lobatus

A single bird observed by those who attended the Field Meeting at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th.

Little Gull    Larus minutus

A juvenile bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4th, the only sighting.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

Numbers at the Larnaca Sewage Works varied between 25 and 50 from the 5th until the month’s end, 4 at Oroklini on 27th and 29th with a similar number at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 18th.

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

Reported only from Larnaca Sewage Works with 1 on 5th, 2 on 22nd, 23rd and the 24th with 3 there on the 26th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans

At Larnaca Sewage Works there were 3 on 4th, c10 on 5th, 1 on 21st and c10 on 26th with 6 at Mandria on the 3rd.  

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

Singles at Achelia Dam on 10th, at Akhna Dam on 2nd, 5th, 25th and 30th, Ezousa Pools on 10th, 11th and 12th, at Larnaca Sewage Works there were c10 on 4th, 6 on both 5th and 11th with singles on 18th and 26th and at Zakaki Marsh there were 2 on the 5th, 13th and the 17th.

White-winged Black Tern    Chlidonias leucopterus 

2 at Akhna Dam on 17th and 21st with 4 on 29th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on both the 4th and the 5th and 1 Zakaki Marsh on the 1st with 3 there on the 5th.

Rock Dove    Columba livia

c5 reported from Kensington Cliffs on the 5th.

Stock Dove    Columba oenas

A lone bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13th.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

 

1 Akhna Dam on the 2nd.  

 

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

At Vrysoulles c20 reported on the 2nd, c40 at Mandria on the 29th, c12 at Ezousa River on 30th and 2 or 3 all month at Strovolos with a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 6 birds.

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

3 at Mandria on the 2nd, 2 there on the 12th and 25th and 1 on the 29th.

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Single birds at Vrysoulles on the 2nd and at Paphos on the 16th.

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

Single birds at Lythrodhonda on the 6th and the 7th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

Single birds at Anageia on 18th, Asprokremnos Dam on the 16th and the 28th, Ayios Nikolaos on the 3rd, Koilineia on the 16th, Smyies on the 14th and all month at Peyia.

Nightjar    Caprimulgus europaeus

Just the one report of a single bird at Ayios Nikolaos on the 3rd.

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

1 at Achelia Dam on 3rd, 1 or 2 at Akhna Dam on most dates from 2nd until the 28th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 12th, 1 at Ayia Thekla on 19th with 2 there on 25th, 1 at Ezousa Pools on 3rd with 2 on 11th, 1 at Larnaca Marina on 25th, 1 at Oroklini on 11th and 28th, 1 at Paphos on 27th, 1 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on both the 8th and 25th and 3 at Zakaki Marsh on the 5th with 4 there on the 17th.

1 at Akhna Dam from 4th until 8th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th and 1 at Akrotiri on 5th.

Hoopoe    Upupa epops

2 at Ayia Napa on 11th, 1 at Oroklini on 11th and 1 at Ayia Napa on 18th.

Wryneck    Jynx torquilla

A single bird at Akhna Dam on the 8th.

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

In the fields around the Larnaca Sewage Works there were c40 reported on 5th, c30 on the 24th and c15 on the 26th. Away from this site the only other sighting was of 2 birds in the fields adjacent to the Ezousa Pools on the 29th . 

Short-toed Lark    Calandrella brachydactyla

3 at Droushia on 3rd, 5 at Mandria on the 5th, 1 at Ayia Napa on the 11th and 1 at Mandria on the 21st.

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

At Akhna Dam there were c15 reported on the 2nd with 6 on the 9th, 3 at Anarita Park on the 12th, 5 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 25th, 1 at Paphos on both the 27th and the 30th with a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 30 birds.

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

First reports this year from Ayia Napa on the 19th with 3 birds seen, c60 at Ezousa Pools area on 29th, c200 in the same area on the 30th and c100 at Mandria also on the 30th.   

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

c30 were reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th and just 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 13th.

Crag Martin    Ptyonoprogne rupestris

One report of a single bird on the 15th from Arminou Dam .

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

At Akhna Dam there were c100 on 2nd, up to 6 from 2nd to 21st at Oroklini, 10 at Athalassa on 4th, c300 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 5th, 100+ at Evretou Dam on 9th, c80 at Anarita Park on 12th, c20 at Ezousa River on 16th, c20 at Kannaviou Dam on 21st and 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 26th with c20 there on the 29th.

Tawny Pipit    Anthus campestris

At Mandria there were 3 on the 2nd whilst there was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4th.

Tree Pipit    Anthus trivialis

Singles at Cape Greco on 11th, Ezousa River on 16th and at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 18th.

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

4 at the Ezousa River on the 29th, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th and c20 at Ezousa River on the 30th.

Red-throated Pipit    Anthus cervinus

Singles at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th, Akrotiri on 5th, Mandria on 9th with c15 at Ayia Napa on 11th, 1 at Cape Greco on 11th, 25 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 11th, 3 at Mandria on 11th, 1 at Ayios Nikolaos on 13th, 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13th, 1 at Paphos on 16th, 25 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 17th, 40 at Ayia Napa on 18th, 1 at Paphos on 18th, 20 at Ayia Napa on 19th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 23rd, 2 at Ayia Napa on 25th and then 1 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 26th.

First birds were 3 at Zakaki Marsh on the 29th .

Singles at Oroklini on 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th, 50+ at Achelia Dam on 8th, 3 at Cape Greco on 11th, 100 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 11th, 10 at Mandria on 12th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13th, 4 there on 17th, 1 at Cape Greco on 18th and c20 at Yeroskipou on 18th.

a) Blue-headed Wagtail    Motacilla flava flava

At Mandria there were c80 on 2nd, 3 at Ezousa River on 3rd, c100 at Larnaca

Sewage Works on 5th, c70 at Ezousa River on 10th, c60 at Mandria on 11th,

c10 at Aspro Dam Pools on 12th, 1 at Ezousa River on 12th, c30 at Mandria on

 12th and singles at Ezousa River on 21st and 2nd with 3 there on the 30th.

d) Syke’s Wagtail    Motacilla flava beema

3 at Mandria on the 6th and c12 at Mandria on the 9th.

Grey Wagtail    Motacilla cinerea

Apart from the very early report last month, more usual arrival dates were of 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 16th, 2 at Kouklia on 16th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 17th, 1 at Apliki on 18th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 22nd, 1 at Ezousa River on 22nd and 1 at Gefyra on 22nd.

White Wagtail    Motacilla alba

Very numerous all month with reports from Akrotiri Reed Beds [max 10 on 5th], Anarita Park [max c60 on 12th], Asprokremnos Dam [max c400 on 12th], Avagas Gorge, Ayia Napa [max 10 on 11th], Cape Greco [max 20 on 11th], Ezousa River [max c400 on 29th], Larnaca Sewage Works [max 20 on 5th], Mandria [max c120 on 3rd], Nicosia [max 100+ on 21st], Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 30 birds and Pissouri Bay with a max of c25 on the 23rd.

Wren    Troglodytes troglodytes

The only sighting was of a bird in the Avagas Gorge on the 30th.

Robin   Erithacus rubecula

First sighting was of 2 birds at Droushia on the 8th, then singles were reported from Gefyra on the 22nd, Xyuatos Dam on 26th, Avagas Gorge on 29th and Oroklini also on the 29th.

Bluethroat    Luscinia svecica

Oroklini had almost daily sightings of a single bird from the 3rd to the 25th, 2 females at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13th and 1 heard at Cape Greco on the 18th.

Redstart    Phoenicurus phoenicurus

2 at Akoursos on the 3rd, singles at Mandria on 3rd, Cape Greco on 11th, Ayia Napa on 12th, Akrotiri on 13th, 5 at Smyies on 14th then 1 again at Cape Greco on 18th and finally 2 at Ayia Napa on the 19th.

Whinchat   Saxicola rubetra

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Anarita Park [22 on 12th], Asprokremnos Dam, Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Kathikas, Oroklini, Akrotiri Reed Beds, Larnaca Sewage Works, Droushia, Ayia Napa [c20 on 11th], Cape Greco, Mandria, Phasouri Reed Beds, Ayia Varvara and Ezousa River. Latest date was a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 27th.

Stonechat    Saxicola torquatus

First report was from Oroklini on the 6th after which they were reported from Anarita Park on 7th, Droushia on 8th, Akhna Dam on 15th, Zakaki Marsh on 16th, Aspro Dam Pools on 18th, Ayia Napa [8 on 18th], Ezousa River [a ‘caspian-form’ female on 18th], Mandria on 18th, Ayia Thekla on 19th, Yermasoya Dam on 21st, Vrecha on 22nd, Paphos Lighthouse Area on 25th, Larnaca Sewage Works on 26th, Akrotiri Salt Lake [6 on 29th], Kannaviou on 30th and Paphos on 30th. Unless otherwise mentioned, reports are of up to 4 birds.     

Isabelline Wheatear    Oenanthe isabellina

All reports are of single birds with Akhna Dam on 2nd, Larnaca Sewage Works on 4th, Anarita Park on 7th, Cape Greco on 11th and Anarita Park again on 16th, the last report.

Northern Wheatear    Oenanthe oenanthe

Oroklini had 1 on the 1st with 3 on 2nd and 1 on 27th, Larnaca Sewage Works had 2 on 5th, Mandria with 1 on 6th, Ayia Napa with c10 on 11th, Cape Greco had c12 on 11th, Anarita Park with 11 on 12th, Kensington Cliffs with 2 on 13th, Cape Pyla with 1 on 14th, 1 at Ladies Mile on 16th, 1 at Cape Greco on 18th, at Mandria 2 on 18th with singles on 22nd and 24th and finally Avagas Gorge with 1 on the 26th.  

Cyprus Pied Wheatear    Oenanthe cypriaca

2 at Anarita Park on 1st, 1 at Kamares on 2nd, 1 at Cape Greco on 11th, 1 at Anarita Park on 12th, 7 at Smyies on 14th, 1 at Cape Greco on 18th and the last at Vrecha on the 22nd.  

Finsch’s Wheatear    Oenanthe finschii

A male at Anarita Park on the 7th. There was then a male reported from Ayia Varvara on both the 17th and the 19th.

Blue Rock Thrush    Monticola solitarius

A male at Asprokremnos Dam on the 12th, a female at Kensington Cliffs on the 13th, 1 bird at the Avagas Gorge on the 30th, another at Paphos on the 30th and yet another at White Water Falls on the same date.

Blackbird    Turdus merula

Sightings of single birds at Paphos on both the 19th and the 22nd are the only reports received.

Song Thrush    Turdus philomelos

Just 2 reports of single birds at Akhna Dam on the 15th and at Apliki on the 18th.

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

Reported from Akhna Dam [3] then singles from Oroklini, Kouklia, Athalassa and the Ezousa River.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis

1 or 2 reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Ezousa River, Larnaca Sewage Works and Oroklini which had a maximum daily count of 6 birds.      

Moustached Warbler    Acrocephalus melanopogon

Just one report of a single bird heard at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 28th.
