Bird Records for October 2003

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Between 1 and 12 were reported from Akhna Dam with the maximum on the 5^th, up to 8 at Aspro Dam Pools with the maximum on the 15^th, 3 heard at Athalassa on the 19^th, 5 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13^th and a maximum of c110 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5^th.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

1 at Akhna Dam on the 9^th and the 28^th with 2 on the 20^th whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 1 from the 5^th to the 11^th with 3 then reported until the 26^th but just the 1 again on the 27^th.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

The first was at Asprokremnos Dam on the 12^th with 4 there on the 28^th, 1 at Ayia Thekla on the 19^th with the long-stayer at Bishop's Pool reported on the 16^th.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

The Mandria Rocks held a maximum of 7 on the 3^rd, Kensington Cliffs maximum was 6 on the 5^th and 3 were at Petra Tou Romiou on the 17^th.

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

There was 1 adult at Ladies Mile on the 13^th whilst a bird was seen flying over Limassol on the same date [same bird?] and there was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 26^th.

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

At Akhna Dam there were 6 on the 2^nd, 1 on the 5^th and 3 on the 11^th whilst Evretou Dam had just the 1 on the 11^th.

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

Singles at Oroklini on the 1^st and the 2^nd, Zakaki Marsh on the 13^th and the 16^th and Aspro Dam Pools on the 22^nd.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

Just 2 reports of single birds at Akhna Dam on the 11^th and the 17^th.

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

65+ flew over the Akamas near Latchi on the 14^th, Akhna Dam had up to 8 all month with the maximum being on the 5^th, Asprokremnos Dam had just 1 on the 22^nd, Athalassa had 1 on the 19^th, Ayia Thekla 1 on the 25^th, Paphos Lighthouse Area 1 on the 25^th, Zakaki Marsh 2 on the 16^th with 1 on the 17^th whilst at Larnaca Sewage Works there were c20 on 4^th, c40 on 5^th, 30 on 11^th, 60+ on 18^th and 46 on the 26^th. 

Great White Egret   Egretta alba

Widespread this month with singles at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 11^th, 22^nd and the

29^th, Zakaki Marsh on 16^th, 17^th and 29^th, Akhna Dam on 17^th, Phasouri Reed Beds on

17^th, Aspro Dam Pools on 29^th and the Ezousa River on the 29^th too.

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

There was 1 at Akhna Dam all month but 10 were reported from there during the Field Meeting on the 5^th, up to 3 at Asprokremnos Dam al month, 1 at Athalassa on 12^th, 1 at Athenou on 28^th, 1 at Ayia Thekla on 19^th, 1 at Yermasoya Dam on 21^st, up to 40 at Larnaca Sewage Works with the maximum on the 18^th, singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13^th and 17^th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 1^st and finally 3 flocks of 30, 42 and 26 over Smyies on the 14^th.

Purple Heron    Ardea purpurea

There were 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st with 9+ in a Grey Heron flock over Smyies on the 14^th.

Black Stork    Ciconia nigra

There was 1 at Larnaca on the 17^th but the actual site was not reported.

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

4 at Achelia Dam on the 2^nd, 1 at the Ezousa River on the 13^th with 4 flying overhead there on the 18^th and 1 again at this site on the 25^th.

Glossy Ibis    Plegadis falcinellus

Just the one report of 2 birds at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 1^st.

Spoonbill    Platalea leucorodia

There were 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 8 on 4^th and 5^th, 15 on 11^th and 6 on 18^th, 22^nd and the 26^th.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

Only at Larnaca Sewage Works with 460 reported on the 5^th and c300 on the 18^th.

Wigeon    Anas penelope

There was a female at Aspro Dam Pools on the 19^th and 21^st whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 4 birds on the 5^th, 2 on the 22^nd and 3 on the 26^th.

Teal    Anas crecca

4 at Akhna Dam on 5^th, up to 7 at Aspro Dam Pools, c200 reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on 5^th but only c10 on 18^th and 10+ at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1^st with 80+ there on 13^th, c70 on 17^th and c140 on 23^rd.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

8 at Akhna Dam on 24^th with 6 on 30^th, 27 at Evretou Dam on 14^th and c200 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th with c400 being reported there the following day, the 5^th.

Pintail    Anas acuta

Present at Aspro Dam Pools from the 9^th when just 1 bird was reported with 6 on the 16^th and 17^th, 12 on the 18^th dropping down to 4 or 5 birds by the end of the month. Larnaca Sewage Works had 2 on the 4^th with just 1 seen on the 5^th, Phasouri Reed Beds having 5 on the 13^th and 6 on the 23^rd whilst Zakaki Marsh had just a single bird on the 17^th.

Garganey    Anas querquedula

Late-stayers included 1 Aspro Dam Pools from 12^th to 17^th, c20 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1^st and 2 at Zakaki Marsh on 13^th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

Numbers built up at Larnaca Sewage Works from just 2 on the 4^th to c100 on the 5^th with this number of c100 still being present on the 18^th. Phasouri Reed Beds had 4 on the 1^st and the 13^th but had dropped to a single bird by the 17^th.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

2 birds at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18^th.

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There was [is] a male present at Aspro Dam Pools from the 17^th until the end of the month.  

Honey Buzzard    Pernis apivorus

12 at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 1^st, 5 at Akrotiri on the 5^th, 7 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5^th, 2 at Kensington Cliffs on the 5^th, 3 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 7^th, 1 over the Akamas on the 14^th and finally 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 23^rd.

Black Kite    Milvus migrans

2 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5^th with singles at Anarita Park on the 7^th and Akhna Dam on the 17^th.

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

5 reported from Vrecha on the 9^th and 7 from Salamiou on the 15^th.

Black Vulture    Aegypius monachus

The long-stayer was at Salamiou on the 15^th.

Short-toed Eagle    Circaetus gallicus

1 at Mandria on the 19^th, seen at ground level until it rose on thermals out of sight and then, with 2 the next day at Akrotiri Reed Beds.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

1 at Achelia Dam on the 16^th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 3^rd and 5^th, 5 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 5^th with 2 on 23^rd, 2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 1^st, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on 15^th and 28^th, 2 at Ezousa River on 30^th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th, 1 at Mandria on 2^nd and 12^th and 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13^th and 17^th with 8 on the 23^rd.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

2 females at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 1^st and 1 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5^th.

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

There was an adult male at Ayia Napa on the 11^th.

Montagu’s Harrier    Circus pygargus

1 juv at Akhna Dam on the 2^nd and the 25^th with 2 juvs at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th.

Single birds as either Pallid/Montagu’s at Akamas on the 14^th and at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th.

Goshawk    Accipiter gentilis

Singles at Agros on 1^st, Smyies on 14^th and Arminou Dam on 15^th.

Sparrowhawk    Accipiter nisus

Singles at Asprokremnos Dam on 16^th, Evretou Dam on 14^th, Ezousa River on 29^th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 30^th with 2 birds present at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th and at Smyies on the 14^th.

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo   

B.b.buteo

13 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5^th, singles at Chirokitia on 1^st, Kouklia on 12^th, Mandria on 2^nd, Oroklini on 1^st and Vrysoulles on 2^nd.

B.b.vulpinus

3 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 5^th and 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 8^th.

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

2 at Ayios Dhimitrianos on 15^th and 17^th, 3 at Trachypedoula on 15^th and 1 at Kidasi on the 17^th.

Rough-legged Buzzard    Buteo lagopus

Unfortunately the Field Notes for a report of this species at Kannaviou on the 29^th were not accepted as proving beyond a reasonable doubt, the identification of this very rare, winter visitor.

Buzzard spp.

2 at Pentalia on 10^th, 1 at Kannaviou on 27^th and 1 at Tsadha on 29^th were not identified to spp level.

Lesser Spotted Eagle    Aquila pomarina

A juv that was observed at Smyies on the 14^th following on behind a Honey Buzzard.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

A juv at Achelia Dam on the 8^th and 2 adults at Vrecha on the 9^th are the only reported sightings.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

Reported from most sites across the island the maximum being 5 at Mandria on the 2^nd and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 2 birds.

Red-footed Falcon    Falco vespertinus

Reported from Akhna Dam with 12on 2^nd, 1 on 24^th and 25^th, Akrotiri Reed Beds with 4 on 5^th and c10 on 23^rd, Asprokremnos Dam with 4 on 7^th, Droushia with 2 on 8^th, Mandria with 2 on 2^nd, c40 on 3^rd, c40 on 4^th, 2 on 6^th, 1 on 9^th, 2 on 11^th and 1 on 12^th, Phasouri Reed Beds with 5 on 1^st, 13 on 17^th and c12 on 23^rd, Vrysoulles with 5 on 2^nd and finally Zakaki Marsh with 1 on the 17^th.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

There was 1 at Vrysoulles on the 2^nd and 1 down the Ezousa River on the 30^th.

Hobby    Falco subbuteo

Reported from Akhna Dam with 1 on 19^th, Asprokremnos Dam with singles on 12^th and 18^th, Ayios Nikolaos with 1 on 20^th and 21^st, Mandria with 1 on 2^nd, Phasouri Reed Beds with 3 on 13^th and 4 on 17^th and finally Zakaki Marsh with 1 on the 16^th.

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

1 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 5^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21^st, 5 at Asprokremnos Dam on 7^th with 4 on 12^th, c15 at Kensington Cliffs on 5^th with 27+ on 13^th, 2 at Mandria 3^rd, 2 at Petra Tou Romiou on 17^th, singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on 17^th and 23^rd and 1 at Smyies on 14^th.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus

Singles at Akhna Dam on 25^th, Asprokremnos Dam on 18^th, Ayia Varvara on 3^rd, Koilineia on 16^th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 18^th and the 30^th. 3 were seen at Episkopi on the 16^th and 1 at Trachypedoula on the 15^th. There was one of the subspecies calidus seen and photographed at Mandria by JJG on the 29^th and 30^th. 

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from Asprokremnos Dam with 8 on the 12^th, Avagas Gorge with 4 on the 26^th, Kouklia with 12 on the 12^th, c40 at Mandria on the 2^nd with 4 on the 8^th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 25 birds.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

Singles at Akhna Dam on the 21^st and the 26^th, 2 at Akrotiri on the 5^th, 5 at the Ezousa River on the 30^th, 1 at Polemi on the 2^nd, 2 at Mandria on the 2^nd with 1 on the 8^th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 7 birds.

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

Single birds at Kouklia on the 12^th and 16^th and at Aspro Dam Pools on the 28^th with 3 heard at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13^th and 5 heard there on the 17^th.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa and Oroklini with a maximum of 12 birds at Aspro Dam Pools on the 12^th and the 15^th.

Coot    Fulica atra

Reported from Akhna Dam [maximum c20 on 5^th], Aspro Dam Pools [maximum 5 on 15^th], Athalassa with 2 on 4^th, Larnaca Sewage Works with c150 on 5^th and 17 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th.

Common Crane    Grus grus

Just 2 reports, there were 8 seen at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 1^st and c40 at Vrysoulles on the 4^th.

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

1 at Akhna Dam on the 5^th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4^th, 5 on the 5^th, 6 on the 11^th, 4 on the 18^th and 7 on the 26^th and at Phasouri Reed Beds 3 on the 1^st with singles on the 5^th, 13^th and the 17^th.

Avocet    Recurvirostra avosetta

Up to 5 birds reported from Larnaca Sewage Works from the 4^th until the end of the month.  

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

3 at Akhna Dam on the 2^nd, 20+ at Ayia Napa on the 11^th, 2+ heard almost every night from the 13^th at Ayios Nikolaos, singles at Dhekalia on the 13^th and the 15^th, 8 at Mandria on the 3^rd with 15 there on the 12^th and c60 reported from the Kato Paphos roost on the 1^st.

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

At Akhna Dam there were 5 on 2^nd, 3 on 3^rd, 9 on 15^th, 2 on 21^st, 1 on 25^th and 5 on 29^th with up to 2 birds at Oroklini on and off between the 7^th and the 25^th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

At Akhna Dam there were 2 on the 3^rd, 1 lame bird from the 4^th to the 15^th and 4 birds on the 24^th, Ladies Mile had 3 on the 5^th with a similar number at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4^th whilst single birds were seen at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 8^th and at Mandria on the 21^st.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

There were up to 4 at Akhna Dam from the 4^th until the 29^th, 19 at Ayia Thekla on the 19^th, 175 at Ladies Mile on the 5^th with c120 on 13^th and only 15 on the 16^th and at Larnaca Sewage Works c20 were reported on the 5^th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

The numbers at the Paphos Lighthouse Area varied from 1 to 7 with the higher number present on the 27^th. The only report away from this traditional site was of 1 bird at Ayia Thekla on the 19^th.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

Single birds at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 8^th and 18^th, 4 at Mandria on the 29^th and 1 at Ayia Nikolaos on the 31^st.

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus

There were 7 at Akhna Dam on the 5^th and the 8^th but only 4 on the 15^th whilst Oroklini had between 1 and 13 between the 1^st and the 28^th the maximum occurring on the 11^th plus there was 1 bird reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13^th.      

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Present at Akhna Dam from the 8^th until the 25^th with a maximum of 31 birds on the 13^th, 14 at Ayios Giorgios on 29^th, c20 near the Ezousa Pools on the 29^th and 30^th, up to 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 5^th and 27^th, 3 at Mandria on the 21^st with 28 on the 29^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1^st, 10 on 13^th but only 1 on 23^rd and 3 at Zakaki Marsh on the 17^th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 1^st, 1 at Akhna Dam on 2^nd, 1 at Oroklini on most dates between 3^rd and 11^th, c10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 5^th, 31at Ladies Mile on 13^th with 39 on 17^th, 2 at Akhna Dam on 21^st with 1 on 25^th and finally c25 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 26^th.

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

2 at Achelia Dam on 3^rd, 2 down the Ezousa River on 3^rd, 4 at Akhna Dam on 4^th, 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 5^th, 2 at Zakaki Marsh on 5^th with 2 at Akhna Dam on the 8^th and 3 on the 15^th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 17^th, 1 at the Ezousa Pools on 19^th and finally 2 at Akhna Dam on both the 25^th and the 27^th.

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Just the one sighting during the Field Trip to Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5^th with 2 birds present.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

3 on Ladies Mile on 1^st, 1 at Akhna Dam on 3^rd, c10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th

with 2 there on 5^th, 17 at Ladies Mile on 13^th with 15 on the 17^th and 1 heard at Larnaca

Sewage Works on the 26^th.

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Quite scarce this month with 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 1^st, c12 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th, 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 5^th with 5 on 13^th, 7 at Zakaki Marsh on 17^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 23^rd and then 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 24^th with c15 there on the 26^th.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

Akhna Dam had 1 on 5^th, 3 on 8^th and 32 [yes, 32!] on 25^th with just 1 on the 30^th, singles at Aspro Dam Pools on 17^th and 21^st with 2 on 22^nd, 1 at Cape Greco on 12^th, singles at the Ezousa Pools on 4^th, 11^th but 2 on 2^nd, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13^th with 2 on 16^th, 17^th and 23^rd, a maximum daily count at Oroklini of just a single bird and finally 30+ at Zakaki Marsh on the 17^th.

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

A single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 22^nd.

Curlew    Numenius arquata

Larnaca Sewage Works had 5 on 19^th, 6 each on 22^nd and 24^th with 1 at Akhna Dam on the 25^th.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Larnaca Sewage Works had c5 on 4^th, 2 on 5^th, 18 on 26^th with 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 17^th.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

2 at Akhna Dam on 3^rd with 4 on both 29^th and 30^th, 1 at Ayia Thekla on 19^th, c5 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th and 1 on 5^th and 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13^th.

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4^th but an impressive 21 on the 30^th with just a single sighting away from this site, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th.

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4^th with 2 there on the 26^th.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Singles at Achelia Dam on 3^rd and Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th with 2 at the Ezousa Pools on the 3^rd, 4^th, 11^th and the 13^th.

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Single birds at Akhna Dam on 2^nd, Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th, Phasouri Reed Beds on the 5^th and the 17^th with 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st and 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13^th.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

All sightings are of single birds seen at Akhna Dam on 3^rd and 29^th, Ayia Thekla on 19^th and Paphos Lighthouse Area on 27^th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

Seen at only Paphos Lighthouse Area with 5 on 17^th, 6 on 18^th, 1 on 25^th and 7 on the 27^th.

Red-necked Phalarope    Phalaropus lobatus

A single bird observed by those who attended the Field Meeting at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5^th.

Little Gull    Larus minutus

A juvenile bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4^th, the only sighting.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

Numbers at the Larnaca Sewage Works varied between 25 and 50 from the 5^th until the month’s end, 4 at Oroklini on 27^th and 29^th with a similar number at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 18^th.

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

Reported only from Larnaca Sewage Works with 1 on 5^th, 2 on 22^nd, 23^rd and the 24^th with 3 there on the 26^th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 5^th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans

At Larnaca Sewage Works there were 3 on 4^th, c10 on 5^th, 1 on 21^st and c10 on 26^th with 6 at Mandria on the 3^rd.  

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

Singles at Achelia Dam on 10^th, at Akhna Dam on 2^nd, 5^th, 25^th and 30^th, Ezousa Pools on 10^th, 11^th and 12^th, at Larnaca Sewage Works there were c10 on 4^th, 6 on both 5^th and 11^th with singles on 18^th and 26^th and at Zakaki Marsh there were 2 on the 5^th, 13^th and the 17^th.

White-winged Black Tern    Chlidonias leucopterus 

2 at Akhna Dam on 17^th and 21^st with 4 on 29^th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on both the 4^th and the 5^th and 1 Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st with 3 there on the 5^th.

Rock Dove    Columba livia

c5 reported from Kensington Cliffs on the 5^th.

Stock Dove    Columba oenas

A lone bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13^th.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

1 Akhna Dam on the 2^nd.  

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

At Vrysoulles c20 reported on the 2^nd, c40 at Mandria on the 29^th, c12 at Ezousa River on 30^th and 2 or 3 all month at Strovolos with a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 6 birds.

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

3 at Mandria on the 2^nd, 2 there on the 12^th and 25^th and 1 on the 29^th.

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Single birds at Vrysoulles on the 2^nd and at Paphos on the 16^th.

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

Single birds at Lythrodhonda on the 6^th and the 7^th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

Single birds at Anageia on 18^th, Asprokremnos Dam on the 16^th and the 28^th, Ayios Nikolaos on the 3^rd, Koilineia on the 16^th, Smyies on the 14^th and all month at Peyia.

Nightjar    Caprimulgus europaeus

Just the one report of a single bird at Ayios Nikolaos on the 3^rd.

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

1 at Akhna Dam from 4^th until 8^th, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th and 1 at Akrotiri on 5^th.

2 at Ayia Napa on 11^th, 1 at Oroklini on 11^th and 1 at Ayia Napa on 18^th.

Wryneck    Jynx torquilla

A single bird at Akhna Dam on the 8^th.

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

In the fields around the Larnaca Sewage Works there were c40 reported on 5^th, c30 on the 24^th and c15 on the 26^th. Away from this site the only other sighting was of 2 birds in the fields adjacent to the Ezousa Pools on the 29^th . 

Short-toed Lark    Calandrella brachydactyla

3 at Droushia on 3^rd, 5 at Mandria on the 5^th, 1 at Ayia Napa on the 11^th and 1 at Mandria on the 21^st.

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

At Akhna Dam there were c15 reported on the 2^nd with 6 on the 9^th, 3 at Anarita Park on the 12^th, 5 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 25^th, 1 at Paphos on both the 27^th and the 30^th with a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 30 birds.

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

First reports this year from Ayia Napa on the 19^th with 3 birds seen, c60 at Ezousa Pools area on 29^th, c200 in the same area on the 30^th and c100 at Mandria also on the 30^th.   

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

c30 were reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th and just 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 13^th.

Crag Martin    Ptyonoprogne rupestris

One report of a single bird on the 15^th from Arminou Dam .

At Akhna Dam there were c100 on 2^nd, up to 6 from 2^nd to 21^st at Oroklini, 10 at Athalassa on 4^th, c300 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 5^th, 100+ at Evretou Dam on 9^th, c80 at Anarita Park on 12^th, c20 at Ezousa River on 16^th, c20 at Kannaviou Dam on 21^st and 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 26^th with c20 there on the 29^th.

Tawny Pipit    Anthus campestris

At Mandria there were 3 on the 2^nd whilst there was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 4^th.

Tree Pipit    Anthus trivialis

Singles at Cape Greco on 11^th, Ezousa River on 16^th and at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 18^th.

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

4 at the Ezousa River on the 29^th, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29^th and c20 at Ezousa River on the 30^th.

Red-throated Pipit    Anthus cervinus

Singles at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th, Akrotiri on 5^th, Mandria on 9^th with c15 at Ayia Napa on 11^th, 1 at Cape Greco on 11^th, 25 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 11^th, 3 at Mandria on 11^th, 1 at Ayios Nikolaos on 13^th, 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13^th, 1 at Paphos on 16^th, 25 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 17^th, 40 at Ayia Napa on 18^th, 1 at Paphos on 18^th, 20 at Ayia Napa on 19^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 23^rd, 2 at Ayia Napa on 25^th and then 1 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 26^th.

First birds were 3 at Zakaki Marsh on the 29^th .

Singles at Oroklini on 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th, 50+ at Achelia Dam on 8^th, 3 at Cape Greco on 11^th, 100 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 11^th, 10 at Mandria on 12^th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 13^th, 4 there on 17^th, 1 at Cape Greco on 18^th and c20 at Yeroskipou on 18^th.

a) Blue-headed Wagtail    Motacilla flava flava

At Mandria there were c80 on 2^nd, 3 at Ezousa River on 3^rd, c100 at Larnaca

Sewage Works on 5^th, c70 at Ezousa River on 10^th, c60 at Mandria on 11^th,

c10 at Aspro Dam Pools on 12^th, 1 at Ezousa River on 12^th, c30 at Mandria on

 12^th and singles at Ezousa River on 21^st and 2^nd with 3 there on the 30^th.

d) Syke’s Wagtail    Motacilla flava beema

3 at Mandria on the 6^th and c12 at Mandria on the 9^th.

Grey Wagtail    Motacilla cinerea

Apart from the very early report last month, more usual arrival dates were of 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 16^th, 2 at Kouklia on 16^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 17^th, 1 at Apliki on 18^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 22^nd, 1 at Ezousa River on 22^nd and 1 at Gefyra on 22^nd.

White Wagtail    Motacilla alba

Very numerous all month with reports from Akrotiri Reed Beds [max 10 on 5^th], Anarita Park [max c60 on 12^th], Asprokremnos Dam [max c400 on 12^th], Avagas Gorge, Ayia Napa [max 10 on 11^th], Cape Greco [max 20 on 11^th], Ezousa River [max c400 on 29^th], Larnaca Sewage Works [max 20 on 5^th], Mandria [max c120 on 3^rd], Nicosia [max 100+ on 21^st], Oroklini with a maximum daily count of 30 birds and Pissouri Bay with a max of c25 on the 23^rd.

Wren    Troglodytes troglodytes

The only sighting was of a bird in the Avagas Gorge on the 30^th.

Robin   Erithacus rubecula

First sighting was of 2 birds at Droushia on the 8^th, then singles were reported from Gefyra on the 22^nd, Xyuatos Dam on 26^th, Avagas Gorge on 29^th and Oroklini also on the 29^th.

Bluethroat    Luscinia svecica

Oroklini had almost daily sightings of a single bird from the 3^rd to the 25^th, 2 females at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 13^th and 1 heard at Cape Greco on the 18^th.

Redstart    Phoenicurus phoenicurus

2 at Akoursos on the 3^rd, singles at Mandria on 3^rd, Cape Greco on 11^th, Ayia Napa on 12^th, Akrotiri on 13^th, 5 at Smyies on 14^th then 1 again at Cape Greco on 18^th and finally 2 at Ayia Napa on the 19^th.

Whinchat   Saxicola rubetra

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Anarita Park [22 on 12^th], Asprokremnos Dam, Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Kathikas, Oroklini, Akrotiri Reed Beds, Larnaca Sewage Works, Droushia, Ayia Napa [c20 on 11^th], Cape Greco, Mandria, Phasouri Reed Beds, Ayia Varvara and Ezousa River. Latest date was a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 27^th.

Stonechat    Saxicola torquatus

First report was from Oroklini on the 6^th after which they were reported from Anarita Park on 7^th, Droushia on 8^th, Akhna Dam on 15^th, Zakaki Marsh on 16^th, Aspro Dam Pools on 18^th, Ayia Napa [8 on 18^th], Ezousa River [a ‘caspian-form’ female on 18^th], Mandria on 18^th, Ayia Thekla on 19^th, Yermasoya Dam on 21^st, Vrecha on 22^nd, Paphos Lighthouse Area on 25^th, Larnaca Sewage Works on 26^th, Akrotiri Salt Lake [6 on 29^th], Kannaviou on 30^th and Paphos on 30^th. Unless otherwise mentioned, reports are of up to 4 birds.     

Isabelline Wheatear    Oenanthe isabellina

All reports are of single birds with Akhna Dam on 2^nd, Larnaca Sewage Works on 4^th, Anarita Park on 7^th, Cape Greco on 11^th and Anarita Park again on 16^th, the last report.

Northern Wheatear    Oenanthe oenanthe

Oroklini had 1 on the 1^st with 3 on 2^nd and 1 on 27^th, Larnaca Sewage Works had 2 on 5^th, Mandria with 1 on 6^th, Ayia Napa with c10 on 11^th, Cape Greco had c12 on 11^th, Anarita Park with 11 on 12^th, Kensington Cliffs with 2 on 13^th, Cape Pyla with 1 on 14^th, 1 at Ladies Mile on 16^th, 1 at Cape Greco on 18^th, at Mandria 2 on 18^th with singles on 22^nd and 24^th and finally Avagas Gorge with 1 on the 26^th.  

Cyprus Pied Wheatear    Oenanthe cypriaca

2 at Anarita Park on 1^st, 1 at Kamares on 2^nd, 1 at Cape Greco on 11^th, 1 at Anarita Park on 12^th, 7 at Smyies on 14^th, 1 at Cape Greco on 18^th and the last at Vrecha on the 22^nd.  

Finsch’s Wheatear    Oenanthe finschii

A male at Anarita Park on the 7^th. There was then a male reported from Ayia Varvara on both the 17^th and the 19^th.

Blue Rock Thrush    Monticola solitarius

A male at Asprokremnos Dam on the 12^th, a female at Kensington Cliffs on the 13^th, 1 bird at the Avagas Gorge on the 30^th, another at Paphos on the 30^th and yet another at White Water Falls on the same date.

Blackbird    Turdus merula

Sightings of single birds at Paphos on both the 19^th and the 22^nd are the only reports received.

Song Thrush    Turdus philomelos

Just 2 reports of single birds at Akhna Dam on the 15^th and at Apliki on the 18^th.

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

Reported from Akhna Dam [3] then singles from Oroklini, Kouklia, Athalassa and the Ezousa River.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis

1 or 2 reported from Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Ezousa River, Larnaca Sewage Works and Oroklini which had a maximum daily count of 6 birds.      

Moustached Warbler    Acrocephalus melanopogon

Just one report of a single bird heard at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 28^th.
