Bird Records for September 2003

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

There were up to a maximum of 4 reported from the Aspro Dam Pools during the month, one at least of which was a first-year bird. 3 were present at the Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 7^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the same date, 4 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8^th, 2 at Akhna Dam on the 12^th, 16 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13^th and 1 at Athalassa on the 21^st.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

There was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13^th with 1 at the Ezousa Pools on both the 17^th and the 19^th.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

Two very early records, the first being a single bird at Pomos Point on the 11^th and the second also of a single bird at Cape Aspro on the 20^th, a site usually associated with the next species.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

There were 2 at Mandria on the 15^th, 24^th and the 27^th with 1 at Apostolos Andreas on the 2^nd and 7 seen whilst on the Boat Trip down the Akamas on the 10^th.

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

There was 1, with Demoiselle Cranes, at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 6^th and 7^th with 6 reported from the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13^th although from Birdline I know that they were present at this location for many weeks.

Little Bittern    Ixobrychus minutus

Just 2 reports, the first of a male at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 13^th and the second involving a group of 7 birds on the 29^th, seen as they flew over the Episkopi Garrison.

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

12 seen flying over Cape Gata on the 3^rd and 3 at Evretou Dam on the 11^th.

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

Single birds at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th, Akamas [Boat Trip] on the 10^th and at Oroklini on most dates from the 14^th until the month’s end. A flock of 60 birds at Latchi on the 20^th.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

A single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds reported on the 7^th, the 11^th and the 17^th.

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

1 at Akhna Dam on the 12^th, 2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20^th and 21^st, 11 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19^th, 2 at Athalassa on the 21^st with 1 on the 28^th, 1 at Evretou Dam on the 11^th, 28 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8^th, 7 on Ladies Mile on the 21^st with 9 the following day, 14 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13^th but 30+ on the 23^rd, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th and the 25^th, 2 at Phinikas on the 14^th with 3 on the 21^st, 21 at Polis on the 11^th, 12 at Pomos Point on the 4^th, 5 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th with 6 there on the 11^th and just 1 there on the 22^nd.

Great White Egret   Egretta alba  

There was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 14^th and 1 again at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th.

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

During the Boat Trip on the 10^th there was a group of 13 and another of 7, 1 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 7^th, 25 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 22^nd, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7^th with 8 on the 20^th and 11 on the 21^st, singles at Aspro Dam Pools on both the 15^th and the 21^st, 5 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 8^th with just 1 there on the 14^th, singles at Evretou Dam on both the 25^th and the 26^th, 1 at the Ezousa River on the 6^th, 2 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8^th, 50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13^th, 3 at Latsia on the 25^th, 1 at Lythrodhonda on the 20^th, 1 at Mavrokolymbos Dam on the 18^th, 1 at Apostolos Andreas on the 2^nd, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 22^nd with 4 on the 25^th, 3 at Phinikas on the 14^th, 8 at Pomos Point on the 4^th and finally 5 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th with just 2 there on the 22^nd.

Purple Heron    Ardea purpurea

There was 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th, 13 in off the sea at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 17^th, 1 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19^th and 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 22^nd, 1 at Latsia on the 25^th with 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the same date.

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

All records are of single birds with Aspro Dam Pools on 15^th, Akrotiri Salt Lake on 21^st, Akrotiri on 22^nd and Akrotiri Reed Beds on the same date.

Glossy Ibis    Plegadis falcinellus

There were 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th, 17^th and the 22^nd with 3 there on the 25^th whilst the only other sighting was of 1 at the Ezousa Pools on the 13^th.

Spoonbill    Platalea leucorodia

1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th, 4 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13^th and the 25^th but only 1 there on the 23^rd, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20^th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 22^nd and 1 on Ladies Mile on the 30^th.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

At the Larnaca Sewage Works there were only 35 on the 13^th but this had increased to 200+ by the 23^rd and to 250+ by the 25^th whilst there was just the one report of a juvenile from the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21^st.

Teal    Anas crecca

c10 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 19^th and 50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th with 50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Pintail    Anas acuta

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 20^th is the only report.

Garganey    Anas querquedula

c240 during the Boat Trip on the 10^th, 3 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 7^th, 3 on the Asprokremnos Canal on the 13^th, up to 5 at the Aspro Dam Pools between the 6^th and the 26^th, 4 on the Asprokremnos Dam on the 8^th with 3 on the 19^th, 10+ at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th, up to c160 at Phasouri Reed Beds between the 7^th and the 17^th and 12 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th and at Phasouri Reed Beds there was 1 on the 7^th, 2 on the 15^th and 7 on the 17^th.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

There were 12 on Zakaki Marsh on the 22^nd.

Honey Buzzard    Pernis apivorus

At the Akrotiri Reed Beds there were 21 on 7^th, 2 on 11^th, 73 on 17^th, c10 on 19^th, 41 on 21^st and 2 on the 22^nd. 3 at Petra Tou Romiou on the 20^th, 1 at Armou on 19^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 14^th with 3 on 20^th, 2 at Asprokremnos Dam on 22^nd, 2 at Kouklia on 21^st with 1 on 23^rd, 18 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25^th, 1 at Mandria on 21^st, 1 at Polis Reed Beds on 21^st, 1 at Temple of Apollo on 20^th and at Phasouri Reed Beds there was 1 on both the 7^th and the 21^st with 2 on the 22^nd.

Black Kite    Milvus migrans

1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7^th and 26^th with 5 on 19^th and 2 on 21^st, 1 at Cape Aspro on 19^th, 1 at Curium on 9^th, 1 in Dhiarizos River Valley on the 21^st and singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15^th, 17^th and the 22^nd.

Egyptian Vulture    Neophron percnopterus

A juvenile at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21^st plus another member photographed a juv somewhere near Akrotiri Salt Lake but as I go to press I do not have the date or the exact location.

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

Just the one report of 2 birds at Ayias Savvas on the 13^th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

4 at Akhna Dam on 12^th, at Akrotiri Reed Beds there was 1 on the 7^th, 2 on 15^th, 4 on 17^th, 23 on 19^th, 8 on 20^th, 14 on 21^st and 15 on 22^nd, 1 or 2 at Aspro Dam Pools between the 18^th and 29^th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on 19^th and 22^nd, 1 at Kouklia on 29^th, 1 at Mamonia on 13^th, at Mandria 1 on 13^th, 23^rd and 29^th with 2 on 18^th, 3 on 22^nd and 5 on 21^st, 1 at Oroklini on 11^th, at Phasouri Reed Beds 7 on 7^th, 1 on 11^th, 5 on 15^th, 3 on 17^th, 11 on 21^st, 5 on 22^nd, 10 on 25^th, 6 on 26^th and 3 on 30^th, 1 at Tsadha on 19^th and finally 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th with 1 there on the 22^nd.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

A very early, single female at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20^th.

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

Akrotiri Reed Beds had 8 on the 19^th, 1 juv on the 20^th, 3 juvs on 21^st and 3 birds on 22^nd, 2 males and a female at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13^th, 1 at Mandria on the 18^th, 1 at Oroklini on the 24^th, 2 juvs at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21^st and 2 ‘ring-tails’ there on the 26^th with the final report also on the 26^th of a juv at Trachoni.

Montagu’s Harrier    Circus pygargus

At Akrotiri Reed Beds there were 7 on 19^th, 2 juvs on 20^th, 4 juvs on 21^st, 2 birds on 22^nd and 4 on the 25^th, 1 at Mandria on the 2^nd and the 26^th and at Phasouri Reed Beds there was a male on the 15^th, 3 juvs on the 21^st, 1 bird on the 22^nd and finally 3 birds on the 26^th.

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo

1 at Oroklini on 8^th, 1 at Tsadha on 19^th, 3 at Kornos on 20^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21^st, 3 at Kolossi on 23^rd, 1 at Kotchatis on 23^rd and 3 at Petra Tou Romiou also on the 23^rd.

B.b.vulpinus

2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21^st with 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the same date.

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

Singles at Ayias Savvas on 13^th, Tsadha on 19^th and at Omodhos on the 24^th.

Lesser Spotted Eagle    Aquila pomarina

2 juvs at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21^st and, to top that, he also had 2 adults and 1 juv on the same date at Phasouri Reed Beds.

Booted Eagle    Hieraaetus pennatus

A single dark and light phase birds at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21^st.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

2 adults with 2 juvs at the Akamas on the 23^rd with a single first-year bird at the Aspro Dam Pools on the same date.

Osprey    Pandion haliaetus

Single birds at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19^th, 21^st and 23^rd; same bird that stopped for a little fishing?

Lesser Kestrel    Falco naumanni

A lone female at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21^st with a much more satisfying male and female at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the same date.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

Reported, in single figures, island-wide all month. 6 was the highest figure reported that being at the Evretou Dam on the 28^th with 5’s at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 22^nd and Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th and the 25^th.

Red-footed Falcon    Falco vespertinus

The first sighting this year was a first-year bird at Lythrodhonda on the 20^th. Birds were then seen at other sites with 2 juvs at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 21^st, 2 birds at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21^st, a female and 3 juvs at Mandria on the 21^st, 5 birds at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21^st, 1 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 22^nd, an adult male at Mandria on the 22^nd, an adult male plus 2 at Mandria on the 23^rd, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 25^th and finally 5 which included 3 juvs at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 30^th.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

A member managed to photograph a bird somewhere near Akrotiri Reed Beds during the month, too absorbed in his photography to realise what it was until the photograph was developed but as I go to press I do not have the date or the precise location.

Hobby    Falco subbuteo

Singles at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 22^nd, Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20^th, Armou on 12^th and 15^th, Aspro Dam Pools on 15^th and 18^th, Asprokremnos Dam on 22^nd and 23^rd, Choli on 25^th, Kouklia on 17^th, Kritou Tera on 20^th, Mandria on 22^nd, Phasouri Reed Beds on the 2^nd with multiple sightings at Akrotiri Salt Lake with 2 on the 20^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 21^st and finally 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 26^th.

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

223 birds were seen during this years Eleonora’s Survey but I await the detailed report which I will publish once received.

Other sightings included 6 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 22^nd, 11 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20^th, 11 at Asprokremnos Dam on 8^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21^st, 6 at Cape Aspro on both the 19^th and 20^th, 1 at Ineia on 29^th, 1 at Mandria on 22^nd, at Phasouri Reed Beds there were 2 on 11^th, 4 on 17^th, 14 on 21^st and 2 on 22^nd, 1 at Phinikas on 14^th with 5 on 21^stand 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

Singles at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 19^th and 22^nd, Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20^th and 21sdt, Aspro Dam Pools on 12^th, Petra Tou Romiou on 27^th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 26^th with 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21^st. 

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

As one would expect, there were many sightings from all over the island. Concentrations included c50 at Armou on 12^th, 20 down the Ezousa on 14^th, c10 at Aspro Dam Pools on 15th and c16 at Asprokremnos Dam on 19^th, 11 at Mandria on 22^nd, 12 at Trachoni on 26^th, 16 at Evretou Dam on 28^th and a maximum daily count from Oroklini of 15.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

Reported from Famagusta Marsh on 8^th [1], Asprokremnos Dam on 19^th [2 male and 2 female], Coral Beach on 19^th [2], Mandria with singles on 20^th and 24^th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 20^th [1 female], Polis Reed Beds on 21^st [2 females], Kouklia on 23^rd [a pair], Yeroskipou on 27^th [1 heard], Stroumbi on 27^th [1], Ezousa on 30^th [1], Kouklia on 30^th [2] and a maximum daily count from Oroklini of 5 birds.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reports from Phasouri Reed Beds, Famagusta Marsh, Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Evretou Dam, Athalassa and Oroklini. The maximum at these sites was 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th.

Coot    Fulica atra

Reported from Aspro Dam Pools [2 adults + 2 juvs on 2^nd, 6 birds on 22^nd and 24^th], Phasouri Reed Beds [c30 on 7^th, 12 on 11^th, 30 on 15^th], Zakaki Marsh [5 on 7^th], Famagusta Marsh [1 on 8^th] and Akhna Dam [15 on 12^th].

Common Crane    Grus grus

17 over Latchi on the 11^th, 70+ at Mamonia on the 12^th and 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 25^th are the only reports.

Demoiselle Crane    Anthropoides virgo

All reports are from the Akrotiri Salt Lake and consist of 32 seen on the evening of the 4^th and 7 seen on the evening of the 6^th which were also seen on the morning of the 7^th by those members who attended the Field Meeting.

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

At Phasouri Reed Beds there were 14 on 7^th, 10 on 11^th, 30 on 15^th, 8 on 17^th, 1 on 20^th and 1 on 30^th. Zakaki Marsh had 2 on 7^th, Famagusta Marsh 1 on 8^th, Larnaca Sewage Works 8 on 13^th with 20+ on the 25^th.

Avocet    Recurvirostra avosetta

Seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works only with 3 on the 13^th but 4 on the 23^rd and the 25^th.

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

1 at the Famagusta Marsh on the 2^nd and 10+ at one of the Mandria roosts on the 24^th.

Collared Pratincole    Glareola pratincola

There was 1 at Mandria on the 21^st and the 2^nd with 4 at the Phasouri Reed Bed on the 22^nd.   

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

6 at Akhna Dam on the 12^th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 21^st and a maximum daily count of 5 from Oroklini.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

Ladies Mile had 5 on the 7^th and 1 on the 11^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th and finally 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

56 reported from Ladies Mile on the 7^th with only 8 present on the 11^th, 10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23^rd with just 4 there on the 25^th and finally 1 was seen at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 24^th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

At the Paphos Lighthouse Area there were 2 on 1^st, 3 on 4^th and just 1 seen on the 24^th whilst away from this site there was just 1 reported from Akrotiri Gravel Pits near to the off-shore shipwreck.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

1 was reported from the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 9^th and the 24^th.

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus 

3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th with 1 on the 15^th, 1 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8^th and an Oroklini maximum daily count of 4 birds.   

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Singles at Aspro Dam Pools on the 21^st, Asprokremnos Dam on the 22^nd and Mandria on the 22^nd with 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 25^th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

Ladies Mile had 14 on 7^th and 9 on 21^st, Oroklini had up to 2 between the 9^th and 27^th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 12^th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 17^th with 8 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21^st and 10+ on the 25^th.

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Just the one report of a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17^th.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

A lone bird was present on Ladies Mile on the 7^th and the 11^th.

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Phasouri Reed Beds had 3 on 15^th, 3 on 17^th and 4 on 30^th whilst the Ezousa Pools held 3 on the 17^th and Larnaca Sewage Works 6 on the 25^th.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

Singles at Zakaki Marsh on 7^th, Evretou Dam on 14^th, Aspro Dam Pools on 21^st, Asprokremnos Dam on 22^nd and 23^rd, Phasouri Reed Beds on 21^st and 30^th with 3 present on the 22^nd.

Curlew    Numenius arquata

Just the one report of a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 25^th.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Again, just the one report of 6 birds at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

Yet again only one report of a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

2 at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th and the 17^th with 1 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

There was 1 seen on Ladies Mile on the 7^th and the 11^th and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Singles at Aspro Canal on 13^th, Asprokremnos Dam on 19^th, Aspro Dam Pools on 23^rd with 2 at Ezousa on the 17^th and 27^th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 30^th and 7 there on the 20^th.

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Oroklini had 1 on 5^th and 8^th, Zakaki Marsh 4 on 7^th and 11^th, Phasouri Reed Beds 6 on 11^th, 4 on 15^th, 1 on 17^th and 3 on the 30^th.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

2 at Famagusta Harbour on 2^nd, 3 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 4^th, 1 at Oroklini between 14^th and 17^th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on 23^rd and 1 at Evretou Dam on the 28^th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

6 adults at the Paphos Lighthouse Area 24^th is the only report received.

Red-necked Phalarope    Phalaropus lobatus

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

8 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th. 

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

1 on the Akamas on the 10^th and 2 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

1 seen whilst on the Boat Trip down the Akamas on the 10^th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans  

L.c.michahellis

12 on the Akamas on the 10^th, 2 at Paphos Harbour on 17^th and 1 at Cape Aspro on the 20^th.

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybridus

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th and the 21^st and 10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

White-winged Black Tern    Chlidonias leucopterus 

Zakaki Marsh had 4 on 7^th, 5 on 11^th, 2 on 21^st and 5 on 22^nd, 8 at Akhna Dam on 12^th and 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.

Rock Dove    Columba livia

The parentage of the following must be open to doubt but 21 were reported as this species from the Asprokremnos Dam on 19^th with 10+ at Aspro Dam Pools on the 24^th.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Up to 4 birds reported from Famagusta Marsh, Giolou, Karmi, Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Epiktitos, Trapeza and Arodes.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Single figures reported from Arodes, Deftera, Episkopi, Evretou Dam, Famagusta Marsh, Kouklia, Lapithos, Lythrodhonda, Mandria, Oroklini, Pera, Stroumbi, Strovolos, Trapeza and Tseri with the only double-figure count coming from Trachoni with 12 on the 26^th.

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

Up to 5 birds reported from Anarita, Deftera, Evretou Dam, Ezousa, Famagusta Marsh, Mandria, Stroumbi, Styli, Terra and Giolou with 10 being seen at Oroklini on the 10^th.

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Singles at Ayia Varvara on 28^th, Paphos Airport road on 24^th [dead], Asprokremnos Dam on 13^th, Tseri on 25^th, Kato Paphos on 24^th and 1 or 2 seen all month at Phasouri Reed Beds.

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

Singles at Episkopi on 27^th and at Kamares on the 25^th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

Large numbers passed through the island this month with reports from Akrotiri Salt Lake [c200 on 22^nd], Akrotiri Salt Lake, Aspro Dam Pools, Dhiarizos River Valley, Larnaca Sewage Works [100+on 23^rd] and Phasouri Reed Beds [c1000 on 20^th and c1000 on 22^nd].

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Analyontas, Dhiarizos River Valley, Evretou Dam, Kotchatis, Lythrodhonda, Malia, Mandria, Nisou, Oroklini, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Phasouri Reed Beds, Trachoni and Trapeza with, by far, the largest count coming from Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20^th with c4000 hirundines counted, consisting of all 4 species but with this species having the largest percentage.

Oroklini had 3 on the 1^st and then 1 on the 3^rdand the 27^th to the 30^th.

Mandria had 1 on 3^rd, c180 on 15^th, c70 on 18^thand c80 on the 20^th, Ezousa having 4 on 6^th and c20 on the 13^th.

Just the one report of c10 at the Ezousa River on the 18^th.

1 at Ladies Mile on the 7^th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7^th and 3 at Zakaki Marsh on the same date.

There was 1 juv at the Ezousa Pools on the 6^th and a similar bird at Zakaki Marsh on the 21^st.

2 very early arrivals were seen in Nicosia on the 26^th.

Just the one record at the Ezousa River on the 17^th .

Some care needs exercising when separating this species from the following species; leg colour alone is not diagnostic. However the following reports have been received. 6 at Ayias Savvas on the 13^th, 3 at Terra on the 15^th, singles at Limnatis on the 16^th, at Stroumbi on the 16^th, at Mandria on the 24^th, at Terra on the 27^th, at Nisou on the 30^th whilst 2 were reported at Stroumbi on the 27^th.

This month has seen a very large movement through the island of this species with reports of 33 at Droushia on the 4^th, 4 at Armou on the 14^th, 20 at Nata on the 14^th, 2 at Phinikas on the 14^th, 3 at Mandria on the 15^th, singles at Terra on the 15^th, Limnatis on the 16^th, Lythrodhonda on the 19^th and Kato Lefkara on the 20^th. c30 were at the Mavrokolymbos Dam on the 18^th, 8 at Ezousa River on 20^th, 3 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21^st, 12 in the Dhiarizos River Valley on 21^st, c20 at Polis Reed Beds on 21^st, 10 in Xeros Potamos on 21^st, c10 at Kouklia on 23^rd, 5 at Mandria on 24^th and finally c40 at the Evretou Dam on the 28^th.

Reported from many sites with singles at Akoursos on20th, Armou Gorge on 23^rd, Asprokremnos Dam on 22^nd, Ayios Epiktitos on 26^th, Droushia on 16^th, Kouklia on 23^rd and 30^th, Lythrodhonda on 27^th, Mavrokolymbos Dam on 18^th, Nisou on 23^rd and 30^th, Paphos Lighthouse Area on 17^th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 7^th and 30^th and finally at Phinikas on the 14^th. Multiple sightings were 2 at Armou on 14^th, 2 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21^st, 6 at Droushia on 4^th, 3 at Evretou Dam on 28^th, 2 at Kamares on 29^th, 4 at Kathikas on 24^th, 6 at Mandria on 26^th with 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 22^nd, Terra on 15^th and 27^th and Tsadha on 16^th and 17^th.

Reported from many sites all across the island, the maximum being 7 at Pera on the 9^th. Reports came from Analyontas, Anarita Park, Arodes, Ayios Epiktitos, Deftera, Doros, Evretou Dam, Kamares, Kotchatis, Kouklia, Lapithos, Limnatis, Lythrodhonda, Nisou, Pano Kivides, Pera, Stroumbi, Strovolos, Terra, Trachoni, Trapeza and Tseri.

2 at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7^th, 1 down the Ezousa River on the 20^th and 1 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 21^st.

Red-backed Shrike    Lanius collurio

After only one report last month this species started to stream through the island this month, particularly in the west.

Single birds were reported from Ayias Savvas on 13^th, Akoursos on 20^th, Aspro Dam Pools on 21^st, 23^rd, 24^th, 25^thand 26^th, Dikomo on 22^nd, Droushia on 16^th, Ezousa on 6^th, 13^th, 27^th and 30^th, Governor’s Beach on 14^th, Kathikas on 2^nd and 20^th, Chirokitia on 20^th, Larnaca Sewage Works on 13^th, Mandria on 22^nd and 27^th, Oroklini on 5^th, 9^th, 10^th, 11^th, 12^th, 13^thand 25^th, Pano Kivides on 23^rd, Pera on 9^th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 30^thand Stroumbi on 27^th. Multiple sightings submitted were 2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 7^th, 2 at Asprokremnos Dam on 25^th, 2 at Cape Aspro on 25^th, c30 [mainly juvs] at Droushia on 4^th, 2 at Evretou Dam on 28^th, 2 at Kouklia on 23^rd, 2 at Lythrodhonda on 6^th and 8^th, 3 at Mandria on 26^th with 2 on 29^th, 2 at Oroklini on 15^th, 26^th and 29^th with 3 on 17^th and 27^th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 26^thand 6 at Rizokarpaso on the 2^nd.

An earlier passage migrant than the previous species, many still continued to be reported as they passed south through the island although towards the end of the month numbers began to drop off.

Reported in single figures from Analyontas, Arodes, Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Amvrosios, Ayios Epiktitos, Chrysochou, Dikomo, Doros, Droushia, Kotchatis, Lapithos, Limnatis, Lythrodhonda, Malia, Nisou, Oroklini, Pera, Stroumbi, Terra, Trachoni, Trapeza, Tseri and Giolou. Double figures from Evretou Dam with c20 on the 28^th and Mavrokolymbos Dam with 10 on the 18^th.

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Again, common throughout the island. Only significant numbers are shown.

110 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19^th, 95 at Evretou Dam on the 25^th but c200 reported on the 28^thfrom this site, 50 at Omosos on the 24^th and 60 down the Xeros Potamos on the 28^th.

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

High counts of this common resident were c60 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19^th, c20 at Evretou Dam on the 28^th, 15 as the maximum daily count at Oroklini, 30 at Pera on the 1^st and a maximum of 226 at Strovolos on the 27^th with a monthly average of c150.

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

Another common resident with only the higher counts shown.

10+ at Aspro Dam Pools on the 24^th, 25 at Lythrodhonda between the 20^th and the 30^th, a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 40 birds and 25 at Pera on 1^st.

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

Reported in much bigger flocks than the previous species, it would be very interesting to know just how many of these birds are resident and how many are on passage through the island.

c250 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 8^th which was reported as c300 on the 14^th, 105 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19^th, 600+ at the Evretou Dam on the 25^thand c50 at Mavrokolymbos Dam on the 18^th. Significantly Oroklini reports only 1 bird present on the 10^th, 12^th and 29^th, the wintering flock having yet to reach this far east. 

Chaffinch    Fringilla coelebs

The birds have yet to move down from Troodos and the only record we have this month is of a single bird at Amiandos on the 14^th .

Serin    Serinus serinus

2 at Pano Kivides on the 7^th and 5 at Ayias Savvas on the 13^th are the only reports this month.

Greenfinch    Carduelis chloris

Reported from Armou, Deftera, Kamares, Karmi, Lapithos, Lythrodhonda, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Peyia Forest, Psimolofou, Trapeza, Tseri, and Giolou. Higher counts came from Deftera with 30 on the 30^th, Paphos Lighthouse Area with c100 on the 20^th, Peyia Forest with c60 on the 11^thand Armou with 10 on the 14^th.

Goldfinch    Carduelis carduelis

Reported from Arodes, Deftera, Dikomo, Droushia, Evretou Dam, Famagusta Marsh, Kamares, Lapithos, Limnatis, Lythrodhonda, Malia, Oroklini, Stroumbi, Terra, Trachoni, Trapeza, Tseri and Giolou. Higher counts came from Droushia with 18 on the 4^th, Evretou Dam with 50 on the 25^th, Kamares with 10 on the 26^thand Paphos Lighthouse Area with 30 on the 20^th.

Linnet    Carduelis cannabina

6 at Ayias Savvas on 13^th, 1 at Akoursos on 2^nd and 20^th, 2 at Arodes on 27^th, c60 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 14^th, 1 at Kathikas on 2^nd and 20^th, 1 at Pano Kivides on 23^rd, 4 at Stroumbi on 16^th with 1 on 27^th and 1 at Tseri on the 25^th.

Crossbill    Loxia curvirostra

A female seen at Mount Olympus on the 18^th and 10+ at Prodhromos Dam on the 12^th.

Ortolan Bunting    Emberiza hortulana

1 at Droushia on 4^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 14^th and 1 at Kathikas on the 24^th.

Cretzschmar’s Bunting    Emberiza caesia

2 at Droushia on 4^th, 1 at Ayios Amvrosios on 7^th and 1 at Stroumbi on the 16^th.

Corn Bunting    Miliaria calandra

2 at Akhna Dam on 12^th, 2 at Droushia on 16^th, 90 at Evretou Dam on 25^th but only 4 reported from there on the 28^th and 25 from Pera on the 29^th.
