Bird Records for September 2003

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

There were up to a maximum of 4 reported from the Aspro Dam Pools during the month, one at least of which was a first-year bird. 3 were present at the Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 7th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the same date, 4 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8th, 2 at Akhna Dam on the 12th, 16 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13th and 1 at Athalassa on the 21st.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

There was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13th with 1 at the Ezousa Pools on both the 17th and the 19th.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

Two very early records, the first being a single bird at Pomos Point on the 11th and the second also of a single bird at Cape Aspro on the 20th, a site usually associated with the next species.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

There were 2 at Mandria on the 15th, 24th and the 27th with 1 at Apostolos Andreas on the 2nd and 7 seen whilst on the Boat Trip down the Akamas on the 10th.

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

There was 1, with Demoiselle Cranes, at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 6th and 7th with 6 reported from the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13th although from Birdline I know that they were present at this location for many weeks.

Little Bittern    Ixobrychus minutus

Just 2 reports, the first of a male at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 13th and the second involving a group of 7 birds on the 29th, seen as they flew over the Episkopi Garrison.

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

12 seen flying over Cape Gata on the 3rd and 3 at Evretou Dam on the 11th.

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

Single birds at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th, Akamas [Boat Trip] on the 10th and at Oroklini on most dates from the 14th until the month’s end. A flock of 60 birds at Latchi on the 20th.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

A single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds reported on the 7th, the 11th and the 17th.

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

1 at Akhna Dam on the 12th, 2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20th and 21st, 11 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th, 2 at Athalassa on the 21st with 1 on the 28th, 1 at Evretou Dam on the 11th, 28 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8th, 7 on Ladies Mile on the 21st with 9 the following day, 14 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13th but 30+ on the 23rd, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th and the 25th, 2 at Phinikas on the 14th with 3 on the 21st, 21 at Polis on the 11th, 12 at Pomos Point on the 4th, 5 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th with 6 there on the 11th and just 1 there on the 22nd.

Great White Egret   Egretta alba  

There was 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 14th and 1 again at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th.

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

During the Boat Trip on the 10th there was a group of 13 and another of 7, 1 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 7th, 25 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 22nd, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7th with 8 on the 20th and 11 on the 21st, singles at Aspro Dam Pools on both the 15th and the 21st, 5 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 8th with just 1 there on the 14th, singles at Evretou Dam on both the 25th and the 26th, 1 at the Ezousa River on the 6th, 2 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8th, 50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13th, 3 at Latsia on the 25th, 1 at Lythrodhonda on the 20th, 1 at Mavrokolymbos Dam on the 18th, 1 at Apostolos Andreas on the 2nd, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 22nd with 4 on the 25th, 3 at Phinikas on the 14th, 8 at Pomos Point on the 4th and finally 5 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th with just 2 there on the 22nd.

Purple Heron    Ardea purpurea

There was 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th, 13 in off the sea at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 17th, 1 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th and 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 22nd, 1 at Latsia on the 25th with 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the same date.

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

All records are of single birds with Aspro Dam Pools on 15th, Akrotiri Salt Lake on 21st, Akrotiri on 22nd and Akrotiri Reed Beds on the same date.

Glossy Ibis    Plegadis falcinellus

There were 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th, 17th and the 22nd with 3 there on the 25th whilst the only other sighting was of 1 at the Ezousa Pools on the 13th.

Spoonbill    Platalea leucorodia

1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th, 4 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13th and the 25th but only 1 there on the 23rd, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 22nd and 1 on Ladies Mile on the 30th.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

At the Larnaca Sewage Works there were only 35 on the 13th but this had increased to 200+ by the 23rd and to 250+ by the 25th whilst there was just the one report of a juvenile from the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21st.

Teal    Anas crecca

c10 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th and 50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th with 50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Pintail    Anas acuta

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 20th is the only report.

Garganey    Anas querquedula

c240 during the Boat Trip on the 10th, 3 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 7th, 3 on the Asprokremnos Canal on the 13th, up to 5 at the Aspro Dam Pools between the 6th and the 26th, 4 on the Asprokremnos Dam on the 8th with 3 on the 19th, 10+ at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th, up to c160 at Phasouri Reed Beds between the 7th and the 17th and 12 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

50+ at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th and at Phasouri Reed Beds there was 1 on the 7th, 2 on the 15th and 7 on the 17th.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

There were 12 on Zakaki Marsh on the 22nd.

Honey Buzzard    Pernis apivorus

At the Akrotiri Reed Beds there were 21 on 7th, 2 on 11th, 73 on 17th, c10 on 19th, 41 on 21st and 2 on the 22nd. 3 at Petra Tou Romiou on the 20th, 1 at Armou on 19th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 14th with 3 on 20th, 2 at Asprokremnos Dam on 22nd, 2 at Kouklia on 21st with 1 on 23rd, 18 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25th, 1 at Mandria on 21st, 1 at Polis Reed Beds on 21st, 1 at Temple of Apollo on 20th and at Phasouri Reed Beds there was 1 on both the 7th and the 21st with 2 on the 22nd.

Black Kite    Milvus migrans

1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7th and 26th with 5 on 19th and 2 on 21st, 1 at Cape Aspro on 19th, 1 at Curium on 9th, 1 in Dhiarizos River Valley on the 21st and singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th, 17th and the 22nd.

Egyptian Vulture    Neophron percnopterus

A juvenile at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21st plus another member photographed a juv somewhere near Akrotiri Salt Lake but as I go to press I do not have the date or the exact location.

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

Just the one report of 2 birds at Ayias Savvas on the 13th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

4 at Akhna Dam on 12th, at Akrotiri Reed Beds there was 1 on the 7th, 2 on 15th, 4 on 17th, 23 on 19th, 8 on 20th, 14 on 21st and 15 on 22nd, 1 or 2 at Aspro Dam Pools between the 18th and 29th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on 19th and 22nd, 1 at Kouklia on 29th, 1 at Mamonia on 13th, at Mandria 1 on 13th, 23rd and 29th with 2 on 18th, 3 on 22nd and 5 on 21st, 1 at Oroklini on 11th, at Phasouri Reed Beds 7 on 7th, 1 on 11th, 5 on 15th, 3 on 17th, 11 on 21st, 5 on 22nd, 10 on 25th, 6 on 26th and 3 on 30th, 1 at Tsadha on 19th and finally 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th with 1 there on the 22nd.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

A very early, single female at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20th.

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

Akrotiri Reed Beds had 8 on the 19th, 1 juv on the 20th, 3 juvs on 21st and 3 birds on 22nd, 2 males and a female at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 13th, 1 at Mandria on the 18th, 1 at Oroklini on the 24th, 2 juvs at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21st and 2 ‘ring-tails’ there on the 26th with the final report also on the 26th of a juv at Trachoni.

Montagu’s Harrier    Circus pygargus

At Akrotiri Reed Beds there were 7 on 19th, 2 juvs on 20th, 4 juvs on 21st, 2 birds on 22nd and 4 on the 25th, 1 at Mandria on the 2nd and the 26th and at Phasouri Reed Beds there was a male on the 15th, 3 juvs on the 21st, 1 bird on the 22nd and finally 3 birds on the 26th.

1 at Oroklini on 8th, 1 at Tsadha on 19th, 3 at Kornos on 20th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 3 at Kolossi on 23rd, 1 at Kotchatis on 23rd and 3 at Petra Tou Romiou also on the 23rd.

B.b.vulpinus

2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21st with 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the same date.

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

Singles at Ayias Savvas on 13th, Tsadha on 19th and at Omodhos on the 24th.

Lesser Spotted Eagle    Aquila pomarina

2 juvs at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21st and, to top that, he also had 2 adults and 1 juv on the same date at Phasouri Reed Beds.

Booted Eagle    Hieraaetus pennatus

A single dark and light phase birds at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21st.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

2 adults with 2 juvs at the Akamas on the 23rd with a single first-year bird at the Aspro Dam Pools on the same date.

Osprey    Pandion haliaetus

Single birds at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th, 21st and 23rd; same bird that stopped for a little fishing?

Lesser Kestrel    Falco naumanni

A lone female at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21st with a much more satisfying male and female at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the same date.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

Reported, in single figures, island-wide all month. 6 was the highest figure reported that being at the Evretou Dam on the 28th with 5’s at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 22nd and Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th and the 25th.

Red-footed Falcon    Falco vespertinus

The first sighting this year was a first-year bird at Lythrodhonda on the 20th. Birds were then seen at other sites with 2 juvs at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 21st, 2 birds at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 21st, a female and 3 juvs at Mandria on the 21st, 5 birds at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21st, 1 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 22nd, an adult male at Mandria on the 22nd, an adult male plus 2 at Mandria on the 23rd, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 25th and finally 5 which included 3 juvs at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 30th.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

A member managed to photograph a bird somewhere near Akrotiri Reed Beds during the month, too absorbed in his photography to realise what it was until the photograph was developed but as I go to press I do not have the date or the precise location.

Hobby    Falco subbuteo

Singles at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 22nd, Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20th, Armou on 12th and 15th, Aspro Dam Pools on 15th and 18th, Asprokremnos Dam on 22nd and 23rd, Choli on 25th, Kouklia on 17th, Kritou Tera on 20th, Mandria on 22nd, Phasouri Reed Beds on the 2nd with multiple sightings at Akrotiri Salt Lake with 2 on the 20th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 21st and finally 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 26th.

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

223 birds were seen during this years Eleonora’s Survey but I await the detailed report which I will publish once received.

Other sightings included 6 at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 22nd, 11 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20th, 11 at Asprokremnos Dam on 8th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 6 at Cape Aspro on both the 19th and 20th, 1 at Ineia on 29th, 1 at Mandria on 22nd, at Phasouri Reed Beds there were 2 on 11th, 4 on 17th, 14 on 21st and 2 on 22nd, 1 at Phinikas on 14th with 5 on 21stand 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

Singles at Akrotiri Reed Beds on 19th and 22nd, Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20th and 21sdt, Aspro Dam Pools on 12th, Petra Tou Romiou on 27th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 26th with 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 21st. 

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

As one would expect, there were many sightings from all over the island. Concentrations included c50 at Armou on 12th, 20 down the Ezousa on 14th, c10 at Aspro Dam Pools on 15th and c16 at Asprokremnos Dam on 19th, 11 at Mandria on 22nd, 12 at Trachoni on 26th, 16 at Evretou Dam on 28th and a maximum daily count from Oroklini of 15.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

Reported from Famagusta Marsh on 8th [1], Asprokremnos Dam on 19th [2 male and 2 female], Coral Beach on 19th [2], Mandria with singles on 20th and 24th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 20th [1 female], Polis Reed Beds on 21st [2 females], Kouklia on 23rd [a pair], Yeroskipou on 27th [1 heard], Stroumbi on 27th [1], Ezousa on 30th [1], Kouklia on 30th [2] and a maximum daily count from Oroklini of 5 birds.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reports from Phasouri Reed Beds, Famagusta Marsh, Akhna Dam, Aspro Dam Pools, Evretou Dam, Athalassa and Oroklini. The maximum at these sites was 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th.

Coot    Fulica atra

Reported from Aspro Dam Pools [2 adults + 2 juvs on 2nd, 6 birds on 22nd and 24th], Phasouri Reed Beds [c30 on 7th, 12 on 11th, 30 on 15th], Zakaki Marsh [5 on 7th], Famagusta Marsh [1 on 8th] and Akhna Dam [15 on 12th].

Common Crane    Grus grus

17 over Latchi on the 11th, 70+ at Mamonia on the 12th and 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 25th are the only reports.

Demoiselle Crane    Anthropoides virgo

All reports are from the Akrotiri Salt Lake and consist of 32 seen on the evening of the 4th and 7 seen on the evening of the 6th which were also seen on the morning of the 7th by those members who attended the Field Meeting.

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

At Phasouri Reed Beds there were 14 on 7th, 10 on 11th, 30 on 15th, 8 on 17th, 1 on 20th and 1 on 30th. Zakaki Marsh had 2 on 7th, Famagusta Marsh 1 on 8th, Larnaca Sewage Works 8 on 13th with 20+ on the 25th.

Avocet    Recurvirostra avosetta

Seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works only with 3 on the 13th but 4 on the 23rd and the 25th.

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

1 at the Famagusta Marsh on the 2nd and 10+ at one of the Mandria roosts on the 24th.

Collared Pratincole    Glareola pratincola

 

There was 1 at Mandria on the 21st and the 2nd with 4 at the Phasouri Reed Bed on the 22nd.   

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

6 at Akhna Dam on the 12th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 21st and a maximum daily count of 5 from Oroklini.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

Ladies Mile had 5 on the 7th and 1 on the 11th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th and finally 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

56 reported from Ladies Mile on the 7th with only 8 present on the 11th, 10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 23rd with just 4 there on the 25th and finally 1 was seen at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 24th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

At the Paphos Lighthouse Area there were 2 on 1st, 3 on 4th and just 1 seen on the 24th whilst away from this site there was just 1 reported from Akrotiri Gravel Pits near to the off-shore shipwreck.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

1 was reported from the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 9th and the 24th.

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus 

3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th with 1 on the 15th, 1 at Famagusta Marsh on the 8th and an Oroklini maximum daily count of 4 birds.   

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Singles at Aspro Dam Pools on the 21st, Asprokremnos Dam on the 22nd and Mandria on the 22nd with 3 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 25th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

Ladies Mile had 14 on 7th and 9 on 21st, Oroklini had up to 2 between the 9th and 27th, 1 at Akhna Dam on 12th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 17th with 8 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21st and 10+ on the 25th.

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Just the one report of a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 17th.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

A lone bird was present on Ladies Mile on the 7th and the 11th.

 

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Phasouri Reed Beds had 3 on 15th, 3 on 17th and 4 on 30th whilst the Ezousa Pools held 3 on the 17th and Larnaca Sewage Works 6 on the 25th.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

Singles at Zakaki Marsh on 7th, Evretou Dam on 14th, Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, Asprokremnos Dam on 22nd and 23rd, Phasouri Reed Beds on 21st and 30th with 3 present on the 22nd.

Curlew    Numenius arquata

Just the one report of a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 25th.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Again, just the one report of 6 birds at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

Yet again only one report of a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

2 at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th and the 17th with 1 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

There was 1 seen on Ladies Mile on the 7th and the 11th and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Singles at Aspro Canal on 13th, Asprokremnos Dam on 19th, Aspro Dam Pools on 23rd with 2 at Ezousa on the 17th and 27th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 30th and 7 there on the 20th.

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Oroklini had 1 on 5th and 8th, Zakaki Marsh 4 on 7th and 11th, Phasouri Reed Beds 6 on 11th, 4 on 15th, 1 on 17th and 3 on the 30th.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

2 at Famagusta Harbour on 2nd, 3 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 4th, 1 at Oroklini between 14th and 17th, 1 at Asprokremnos Dam on 23rd and 1 at Evretou Dam on the 28th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

6 adults at the Paphos Lighthouse Area 24th is the only report received.

Red-necked Phalarope    Phalaropus lobatus

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

8 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th. 

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

1 on the Akamas on the 10th and 2 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

1 seen whilst on the Boat Trip down the Akamas on the 10th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans  

L.c.michahellis

12 on the Akamas on the 10th, 2 at Paphos Harbour on 17th and 1 at Cape Aspro on the 20th.

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybridus

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th and the 21st and 10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

White-winged Black Tern    Chlidonias leucopterus 

Zakaki Marsh had 4 on 7th, 5 on 11th, 2 on 21st and 5 on 22nd, 8 at Akhna Dam on 12th and 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.

Rock Dove    Columba livia

The parentage of the following must be open to doubt but 21 were reported as this species from the Asprokremnos Dam on 19th with 10+ at Aspro Dam Pools on the 24th.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Up to 4 birds reported from Famagusta Marsh, Giolou, Karmi, Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Epiktitos, Trapeza and Arodes.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Single figures reported from Arodes, Deftera, Episkopi, Evretou Dam, Famagusta Marsh, Kouklia, Lapithos, Lythrodhonda, Mandria, Oroklini, Pera, Stroumbi, Strovolos, Trapeza and Tseri with the only double-figure count coming from Trachoni with 12 on the 26th.

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

Up to 5 birds reported from Anarita, Deftera, Evretou Dam, Ezousa, Famagusta Marsh, Mandria, Stroumbi, Styli, Terra and Giolou with 10 being seen at Oroklini on the 10th.

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Singles at Ayia Varvara on 28th, Paphos Airport road on 24th [dead], Asprokremnos Dam on 13th, Tseri on 25th, Kato Paphos on 24th and 1 or 2 seen all month at Phasouri Reed Beds.

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

Singles at Episkopi on 27th and at Kamares on the 25th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

3 at Pera on 1st and 1 heard there on 9th, 1 near the M1 Pools on 20th, 3 at Asprokremnos Dam on 25th, 1 at Kamares on 25th, 1 at Ayios Epiktitos on 26th, 1 at Trachoni on 26th, 1 at Ayia Varvara on 28th and 2 most evenings at Armou.

Long-eared Owl    Asio otus

Just one report of a single bird at Ayia Varvara on the 28th.

Nightjar    Caprimulgus europaeus

1 at Episkopi Garrison on 18th, 2 flew across the A6 [?] on 20th and another at Episkopi Garrison on the 23rd.

Pallid Swift    Apus pallidus

1 at Akrotiri on 15th, 10 at Mount Olympus on 18th, 1 at Pano Kivides on 23rd 2 at Limassol on the 24th.

Alpine Swift    Apus melba

2 at Limnatis on 16th, c120 at Asprokremnos Dam on 23rd, 18 at Pano Kivides on 23rd and 20 over Limassol on the 24th.

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

Large numbers passed through the island this month with reports from Akrotiri Salt Lake [c200 on 22nd], Akrotiri Salt Lake, Aspro Dam Pools, Dhiarizos River Valley, Larnaca Sewage Works [100+on 23rd] and Phasouri Reed Beds [c1000 on 20th and c1000 on 22nd].

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Analyontas, Dhiarizos River Valley, Evretou Dam, Kotchatis, Lythrodhonda, Malia, Mandria, Nisou, Oroklini, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Phasouri Reed Beds, Trachoni and Trapeza with, by far, the largest count coming from Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20th with c4000 hirundines counted, consisting of all 4 species but with this species having the largest percentage.

Akrotiri Salt Lake with 15 on 7th and 10 on 20th, Aspro Dam Pools between 6th and 21st with a maximum of c24 on 15th, Asprokremnos Dam with 7 on 8th, Droushia with 2 on 4th, 1 at Limnatis on 16th, 6 at Lythrodhonda on 6th, 2 at Oroklini on 12th, 2 at Pera on 9th and 1 at Polis Reed Beds on 21st.

1 report of 1 bird seen  at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on the 21st.

1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 21st and 1 at Kamares on the 26th.

These are the records not identified to ssp level. 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 15th, 13 at Chrysochou on the 17th, c85 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 20th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 3 at Mandria on 22nd, 2 at Zakaki Marsh on 22nd, 2 at Kouklia on 23rd, 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 23rd, 20+ at Mandria on 24th and 150+ at Mandria on 30th. Oroklini had 3 on the 1st and then 1 on the 3rdand the 27th to the 30th.

Mandria had 1 on 3rd, c180 on 15th, c70 on 18thand c80 on the 20th, Ezousa having 4 on 6th and c20 on the 13th.  

b) Grey-headed Wagtail    Motacilla flava thunbergi

Just the one report of c10 at the Ezousa River on the 18th.

f) Black-headed Wagtail    Motacilla flava feldegg

1 at Ladies Mile on the 7th, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 7th and 3 at Zakaki Marsh on the same date.

There was 1 juv at the Ezousa Pools on the 6th and a similar bird at Zakaki Marsh on the 21st.

2 very early arrivals were seen in Nicosia on the 26th.

Multiple sightings were 3 at Droushia on 4th, 2 at Pachyammos on 11th, 4 at Armou on 14th, 2 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 2 at Karmi on 22nd, 3 at Ayios Epiktitos on 26th and 4 at Kamares on the 26th.

1 at Kathikas on 2nd, 1 at Mousere on 13th and 3 at Kathikas on the 24th.

2 at Mousere on 13th, 2 at Armou on 14th, 3 at Giolou on 15th, 1 at Doros on 16th, 3 at Stroumbi on 16th, a male at Asprokremnos Dam on 19th, 2 in the Armou Gorge on 23rd, 6 at Kathikas on 24th, 1 at Analyontas on 25th and 3 at the Evretou Dam on the 28th.

Wood Warbler    Phylloscopus sibilatrix

Just the one record at the Ezousa River on the 17th .

Chiffchaff    Phylloscopus collybita

Some care needs exercising when separating this species from the following species; leg colour alone is not diagnostic. However the following reports have been received. 6 at Ayias Savvas on the 13th, 3 at Terra on the 15th, singles at Limnatis on the 16th, at Stroumbi on the 16th, at Mandria on the 24th, at Terra on the 27th, at Nisou on the 30th whilst 2 were reported at Stroumbi on the 27th.

Willow Warbler    Phylloscopus trochilus

This month has seen a very large movement through the island of this species with reports of 33 at Droushia on the 4th, 4 at Armou on the 14th, 20 at Nata on the 14th, 2 at Phinikas on the 14th, 3 at Mandria on the 15th, singles at Terra on the 15th, Limnatis on the 16th, Lythrodhonda on the 19th and Kato Lefkara on the 20th. c30 were at the Mavrokolymbos Dam on the 18th, 8 at Ezousa River on 20th, 3 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 12 in the Dhiarizos River Valley on 21st, c20 at Polis Reed Beds on 21st, 10 in Xeros Potamos on 21st, c10 at Kouklia on 23rd, 5 at Mandria on 24th and finally c40 at the Evretou Dam on the 28th. 

Spotted Flycatcher    Muscicapa striata

Reported from many sites with singles at Akoursos on20th, Armou Gorge on 23rd, Asprokremnos Dam on 22nd, Ayios Epiktitos on 26th, Droushia on 16th, Kouklia on 23rd and 30th, Lythrodhonda on 27th, Mavrokolymbos Dam on 18th, Nisou on 23rd and 30th, Paphos Lighthouse Area on 17th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 7th and 30th and finally at Phinikas on the 14th. Multiple sightings were 2 at Armou on 14th, 2 at Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 6 at Droushia on 4th, 3 at Evretou Dam on 28th, 2 at Kamares on 29th, 4 at Kathikas on 24th, 6 at Mandria on 26th with 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 22nd, Terra on 15th and 27th and Tsadha on 16th and 17th.

Reported from many sites all across the island, the maximum being 7 at Pera on the 9th. Reports came from Analyontas, Anarita Park, Arodes, Ayios Epiktitos, Deftera, Doros, Evretou Dam, Kamares, Kotchatis, Kouklia, Lapithos, Limnatis, Lythrodhonda, Nisou, Pano Kivides, Pera, Stroumbi, Strovolos, Terra, Trachoni, Trapeza and Tseri.

2 at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 7th, 1 down the Ezousa River on the 20th and 1 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 21st.

Red-backed Shrike    Lanius collurio

After only one report last month this species started to stream through the island this month, particularly in the west.

Single birds were reported from Ayias Savvas on 13th, Akoursos on 20th, Aspro Dam Pools on 21st, 23rd, 24th, 25thand 26th, Dikomo on 22nd, Droushia on 16th, Ezousa on 6th, 13th, 27th and 30th, Governor’s Beach on 14th, Kathikas on 2nd and 20th, Chirokitia on 20th, Larnaca Sewage Works on 13th, Mandria on 22nd and 27th, Oroklini on 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13thand 25th, Pano Kivides on 23rd, Pera on 9th, Phasouri Reed Beds on 30thand Stroumbi on 27th. Multiple sightings submitted were 2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 7th, 2 at Asprokremnos Dam on 25th, 2 at Cape Aspro on 25th, c30 [mainly juvs] at Droushia on 4th, 2 at Evretou Dam on 28th, 2 at Kouklia on 23rd, 2 at Lythrodhonda on 6th and 8th, 3 at Mandria on 26th with 2 on 29th, 2 at Oroklini on 15th, 26th and 29th with 3 on 17th and 27th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 26thand 6 at Rizokarpaso on the 2nd.     

Lesser Grey Shrike    Lanius minor

An earlier passage migrant than the previous species, many still continued to be reported as they passed south through the island although towards the end of the month numbers began to drop off.

As expected, common throughout the island. Reported in single figures from Analyontas, Arodes, Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Amvrosios, Ayios Epiktitos, Chrysochou, Dikomo, Doros, Droushia, Kotchatis, Lapithos, Limnatis, Lythrodhonda, Malia, Nisou, Oroklini, Pera, Stroumbi, Terra, Trachoni, Trapeza, Tseri and Giolou. Double figures from Evretou Dam with c20 on the 28th and Mavrokolymbos Dam with 10 on the 18th.

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Again, common throughout the island. Only significant numbers are shown.

110 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th, 95 at Evretou Dam on the 25th but c200 reported on the 28thfrom this site, 50 at Omosos on the 24th and 60 down the Xeros Potamos on the 28th.

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

High counts of this common resident were c60 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th, c20 at Evretou Dam on the 28th, 15 as the maximum daily count at Oroklini, 30 at Pera on the 1st and a maximum of 226 at Strovolos on the 27th with a monthly average of c150.

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

Another common resident with only the higher counts shown.

10+ at Aspro Dam Pools on the 24th, 25 at Lythrodhonda between the 20th and the 30th, a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 40 birds and 25 at Pera on 1st.

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

Reported in much bigger flocks than the previous species, it would be very interesting to know just how many of these birds are resident and how many are on passage through the island.

c250 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 8th which was reported as c300 on the 14th, 105 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 19th, 600+ at the Evretou Dam on the 25thand c50 at Mavrokolymbos Dam on the 18th. Significantly Oroklini reports only 1 bird present on the 10th, 12th and 29th, the wintering flock having yet to reach this far east. 

Chaffinch    Fringilla coelebs

The birds have yet to move down from Troodos and the only record we have this month is of a single bird at Amiandos on the 14th .

Serin    Serinus serinus

2 at Pano Kivides on the 7th and 5 at Ayias Savvas on the 13th are the only reports this month.

Greenfinch    Carduelis chloris

Reported from Armou, Deftera, Kamares, Karmi, Lapithos, Lythrodhonda, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Peyia Forest, Psimolofou, Trapeza, Tseri, and Giolou. Higher counts came from Deftera with 30 on the 30th, Paphos Lighthouse Area with c100 on the 20th, Peyia Forest with c60 on the 11thand Armou with 10 on the 14th.

Goldfinch    Carduelis carduelis

Reported from Arodes, Deftera, Dikomo, Droushia, Evretou Dam, Famagusta Marsh, Kamares, Lapithos, Limnatis, Lythrodhonda, Malia, Oroklini, Stroumbi, Terra, Trachoni, Trapeza, Tseri and Giolou. Higher counts came from Droushia with 18 on the 4th, Evretou Dam with 50 on the 25th, Kamares with 10 on the 26thand Paphos Lighthouse Area with 30 on the 20th.

2 at Akhna Dam on 12th, 2 at Droushia on 16th, 90 at Evretou Dam on 25th but only 4 reported from there on the 28th and 25 from Pera on the 29th.
