Bird Records for April 2004

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Reported in small numbers from Asprokremmos Dam, Phasouri Reed Beds [adult and 2 juvs on 17^th and 6 on 25^th to the 30^th], Kiti Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works [6 on 18^th] and Oroklini Marsh with a maximum daily count of 10 birds.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

Just the one report of 3 birds at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 11^th.  

Gannet    Morus bassanus      

One off the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 14^th.  

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

There were 2 on the Asprokremmos Dam on the 10^th.  

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

2 off the coast at Kouklia on the 4^th and 4 on the rocks at Mandria on the 7^th.  

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

There was an adult at the Asprokremmos Dam from at least the 5^th until at least the 28^th.  

Bittern    Botaurus stellaris

There was one at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 1^st and a very confiding individual [same?] at the shallow end of the Asprokremmos Dam from the 6^th until the 18^th.  

Little Bittern    Ixobrychus minutes

Xeros Potamos Pools had 1 on the 4^th and the 29^th, 1 male at Ezousa River on 9^th, 1 at Kiti Dam on 18^th, 2 at Evretou Dam on 22^nd, 1 female at Asprokremmos Dam on the 24^th and 28^th and 1 male at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 29^th.  

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

2 at Achelia Stream on 24^th, 1 immature at Asprokremmos Dam on 22^nd and 1 of unknown age there on 27^th, 4 at Agios Georgios on 13^th, 2 at Bishop's Pool on 17^th, 1 at Ezousa River on 17^th, 2 at Kiti Dam on both the 21^st and 28^th with 4 seen there on 18^th, 20+ at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 8^th with 2 on 24^th, 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 7^th with 4 there on 19^th and an immature at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 20^th.  

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

Quite common and widespread this month with 1 at Achelia Stream on 24^th, max 6 at Asprokremmos Dam on 27^th, max 5 at Kiti Dam on 25^th, 1 at Larnaca Airport Pools North on 29^th, 2 at Oroklini Marsh on 21^st, 26^th and 30^th, max 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 7^th and 29^th, 3 at Spiro's Pool on 29^th, max 4 at Xeros Potamos Pools on 17^th, 24^th and 28^th and 1 at Yermasoya Dam on 25^th.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

2 at Oroklini Marsh on 1^st and 27^th with 5 on 2^nd, up to 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds from 11^th until the month’s end and 2 at Spiro's Pool on the 27^th.  

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

Widespread with reports from Achelia Dam [1], Achelia Stream [3], Akrotiri Salt Lake [3], Amathus [4], Archangelos [1], Asprokremmos Dam [max c10 on 27^th], Cape Greco [2], Evretou Dam [2], Ezousa River [3], Kiti Dam [max 4 on 25^th], Kouklia [max 15 on 27^th], Ladies Mile [5], Larnaca Airport Pools North [4], Larnaca Sewage Works [2 on 2^nd, 11^th and 29^th], Oroklini Marsh [max 8 on 23^rd], Paphos Lighthouse Area [1], Phasouri Reed Beds [8], Spiro's Pool [5 on 11^th and 18^th], Xeros Potamos Pools [max 25 on 6^th], Yermasoya Dam [2] and Zakaki Marsh [max 15 on 28^th].  

Great White Egret   Egretta alba  

Only from Zakaki Marsh with a single bird present there from 24^th to the 30^th.    

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Asprokremmos Dam, Athalassa, Evretou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh, Spiro's Pool, Xeros Potamos Pools, Xylophagou, Yermasoya Dam and Zakaki Marsh with 6 at Zakaki Marsh on the 17^th being the highest concentration reported.  

Purple Heron    Ardea purpurea

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake [11 on 17^th], Asprokremmos Dam [1 on 9^th and 16^th], Athalassa [1 on 25^th], Agios Georgios [c46 on 6^th], Banana Bay [c60 on 8^th], Episkopi [1 on 29^th], Larnaca Sewage Works [6 on 18^th], Mavrokolymbos Dam [80+ on 8^th], Oroklini Marsh [4 on 5^th], Phasouri Reed Beds [max 100+ on 7^th], Spiro's Pool [10 on 2^nd], Xeros Potamos Pools [max 36 on 17^th] and Zakaki Marsh [max 2 on 25^th].  

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

The only sighting of a single bird seen at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 9^th.  

Glossy Ibis    Plegadis falcinellus

Reported from Asprokremmos Dam [max of 3 on 9^th and 24^th], Kiti Dam [max 2 on 21^st and 28^th], Oroklini Marsh [max 173 on 16^th], Paphos Lighthouse Area [2 on 24^th], Paralimni Lake [2 on 20^th], Phasouri Reed Beds [max of c40 on 19^th, 22^nd and 25^th], Pomos [1 on 10^th], Tekke Pools [1 on 18^th], Xeros Potamos Pools [max 5 on 9^th] and Zakaki Marsh [3 on 17^th].  

Spoonbill    Platalea leucorodia

Singles at Zakaki Marsh on 7^th and 17^th with 2 on 16^th and 2 at Xeros Potamos Pools on 8^th with 7 seen from there on 24^th.  

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus rubber

180 was the maximum number seen on the 17^th at Akrotiri Salt Lake whilst the maximum number at Larnaca Salt Lake was 40 on the 18^th. Away from these sites there was 1 at Kiti Dam on the 29^th, 90 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 11^th and 7 at Spiro's Pool on the 29^th.  

Gadwall    Anas strepera

6 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 2^nd with 2 there on 11^th.  

Teal    Anas crecca

At Larnaca Sewage Works there were c20 on the 2^nd with just a lone male on the 29^th and 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.  

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

A pair at Athalassa on 18^th, 2 birds at Larnaca Salt Lake on 29^th, c80 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 2^nd with 14 still there on 29^th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 16^th with 2 on 19^th and 1 at Yermasoya Dam on 29^th.  

Pintail    Anas acuta

Up to 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works from 2^nd until 29^th and 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 16^th and 22^nd.  

Garganey    Anas querquedula

Asprokremmos Dam had 3 on 9^th, up to 20 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 11^th and the 29^th, Oroklini Marsh had a maximum daily count of 20 whilst up to 10 were present at Phasouri Reed Beds from 11^th to the 25^th whilst a lone male was present at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 24^th.  

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 28^th whilst the numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works dropped from c100 on the 2^nd to just 6 on the 29^th with 1 being present at the Xeros Potamos Pools from the 1^st to the 6^th.  

Pochard    Aythya farina

Up to 2 birds were present at Larnaca Sewage Works from the 2^nd until the 29^th with 2 at Kiti Dam on the 28^th.  

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There was 1 bird at Phasouri Reed Beds from the 12^th until the 27^th; being reported as a female on all dates except the 12^th [being such a secretive bird there could of course have been a pair present?] and 1 bird at Zakaki Marsh on the 7^th the sex not being reported.  

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

8 at Kensington Cliffs on the 22^nd was the maximum number reported from this site whilst 9 were reported from Vretsia on the 18^th.  

Black Vulture    Aegypius monachus

At Kensington Cliffs on the 22^nd.  

Short-toed Eagle    Circaetus gallicus

An adult was seen near the Birdlife Office at Strakka on the 14^th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

Unless otherwise stated, singles were seen at Achelia Dam, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Asprokremmos Dam, Cape Greco [1 male and 3 females on 2^nd], Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kiti Dam [2 on 21^st], Ladies Mile [2 on 28^th], Larnaca Sewage Works [2 on 28^th], Mandria [max 2 on 6^th], Oroklini Marsh, Phasouri Reed Beds [max 5 on 22^nd], Polis Reed Beds, Xeros Potamos Pools, Yermasoya Dam and Zakaki Marsh.  

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 28^th.  

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

7 males at Cape Greco on the 2^nd, 1 female at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2^nd, 2 males at Xylophagou on the 2^nd, 1 bird at Oroklini Marsh on the 6^th, 2 birds at Pachyammos and Polis on the 11^th, 1 female at Kritou Terra on the 13^th, 2 birds at Ladies Mile on the 16^th and 1 female at Asprokremmos Dam on the 20^th.  

Montagu’s Harrier    Circus pygargus

1 male at Asprokremmos Dam from the 18^th to the 22^nd, 2 male and 2 females together at the Asprokremmos Dam on the 24^th, a male and a female at Kivisili on the 21^st, 2 birds at Evretou Dam on the 22^nd, 2 at Anarita Park on the 23^rd and 2 birds at Cape Greco on the 26^th with 1 bird at Evretou Dam on the 26^th too.  

Harrier spp.

A ring-tail was reported from Psilomofou on the 26^th.  

Goshawk    Accipiter gentiles

Single birds seen at Panayia on 6^th, Caledonian Trail on 9^th, Akamas on 12^th and at Kathikas on the 29^th.  

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo   

B.b.buteo

1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th is the only sighting.

B.b.vulpinus

Singles at Evretou Dam on 1^st, Pyla Range on 2^nd, Phasouri Reed Beds on 16^th and at Zakaki Marsh on the 17^th.  

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

A pair on site was reported from the Akamas area on the 1^st, 1 at Agios Georgios on the 11^th and 1 at Vretsia on the 18^th plus a pair near the Evretou Dam on the 16^th and another pair at Makounta on the 26^th.  

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

Single birds seen at Archimandrita on 7^th, Tsadha on 10^th, at Ineia on 12^th and 27^th, at Evretou Dam on 16^th, Peyia on 27^th and 28^th, at Omodhos on 29^th and 3 birds at the Evretou Dam on the 13^th.

Lesser Kestrel    Falco naumanni

Between the 18^th and the 24^th there were up to 9 birds at Anarita Park, 9 being reported on the 20^th. Away from this site there was just the one report of a single male at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 25^th.  

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

As expected, this species was reported from most sites visited during the month with records from Achelia Dam, Akamas, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Anarita Park, Archangelos, Cape Greco [8 on 2^nd], Evretou Dam, Kamares, Kannaviou Dam, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pera Orinis, Strovolos and Xylophagou.  

Red-footed Falcon    Falco vespertinus

At Anarita Park there were up to 8 birds present between the 18^th and the 30^th when they were to be seen in the company of the previously reported Lesser Kestrels. Away from this site there was a male at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 25^th, a male at Curium on 25^th, 3 males and 2 females at Kivisili on the 21^st and 2 birds at Kofinou on the same date with 4 birds at Oroklini Marsh on 20^th, 2 females at Phasouri Reed Beds on 19^th and 6 birds at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 20^th.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

The only sighting this month with 1 bird at Agios Georgios on the 6^th.  

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

First report was of 2 at Kensington Cliffs on the 21^st and then daily from this site thereafter with a maximum of 10 on the 25^th.  

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

1 or 2 reported from Kensington Cliffs mid-month, 2 reported from the Vretsia area during the Field Meeting on the 18^th and single birds seen at Evretou Dam on the 18^th and at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 25^th.   

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from most sites across the island, the highest concentrations were 8 at Amathus in the latter part of the month and a maximum daily count from Oroklini Marsh of 4 birds. 

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

1 or 2 reported from most of the western sites but reports also from Athalassa, Liopetri and Oroklini Marsh in the east. 

Quail    Coturnix coturnix

Records from Coral Bay [1-4], Filousa, Nata, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area [1-6], Paphos Sewage Works, Strakka [3 heard] and Yermasoya Dam. 

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

Just the one report of a single bird at Oroklini Marsh on the 15^th.  

Spotted Crake    Porzana porzana

Reported from Xeros Potamos Pools on the 7^th and the 10^th and from Oroklini Marsh on the 21^st.  

Little Crake    Porzana parva

1 male was present at the Aspro Dam Pools from the 1^st to the 6^th with an amazing 6 birds seen there on the 7^th. Also reported from Xeros Potamos Pools with 1 bird on the 21^st and the 22^nd with 3 on the 24^th and another amazing count of 7 birds on the 28^th.  

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reported from all wetlands across the island with the highest total being the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 5 birds. 3 juvs with an adult were reported from Yermasoya Dam on the 29^th.  

Coot    Fulica atra

Again, reported from most wetland across the island, breeding records came from Athalassa with 3 juvs seen on 18^th and then multiple broods on the 25^th. Oroklini Marsh had a maximum daily count of 12 birds.  

Common Crane    Grus grus

2 were seen by many birders at Mandria during the 4^th to the 16^th, from the 10^th being joined by the next species.  

Demoiselle Crane    Anthropoides virgo

A single adult bird consorted with the previous species during the 10^th to the 16^th giving many people not only their first view of this delightful species but enabling detailed comparisons to be made with the Common variety.  

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

Common and widespread at most wetland-sites all month the higher numbers being 22 at Evretou Dam on the 1^st, a maximum daily count of 40 at Oroklini Marsh with 12 pairs taking up residence, c50 at Spiro's Pool with many pairs nesting and 18 being present at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 6^th. Nesting was also observed at Phasouri Reed Beds with at least 2 pairs incubating.  

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

Up to 3 birds reported from Mandria until the 17^th with 1 bird being reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th.  

Collared Pratincole    Glareola pratincola 

Present at Phasouri Reed Beds between the 16^th and the 30^th with 25 birds being

reported on the 22nd whilst 1 bird was seen at Mandria on the 12^th.  

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

Seen at Aspro Dam Pools [2 on 6^th], Asprokremmos Dam [6 on 5^th and 4 on 10^th and 24^th], Kiti Dam [10 on 11^th and 6 on 18^th], Larnaca Sewage Works [5 on 11^th], Oroklini Marsh with a maximum daily count of 12, Phasouri Reed Beds [6 on 11^th] and Xeros Potamos Pools with up to 20 birds between the 1^st and pools drying out towards the end of the month when only 1 was present on the 28^th. Also 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 28^th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

2 at Ezousa River on 9^th, 10 at Ladies Mile on 17^th then only 1 there from 25^th to 30^th, 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25^th, 1 at Xeros Potamos Pools on 28^th with 2 there on 29^th and 30^th and 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 24^th.  

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

Present at Ladies Mile with a high of 12 on the 16^th, Larnaca Sewage Works with a high of 15 on the 2^nd, Spiro's Pool with a high of 4 on the 18^th, 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 29^th and 2 at Oroklini Marsh on the 3^rd with only 1 on the 4^th and the 24^th.  

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

Passage birds noted at Mandria with 1 on 18^th and 3 on 20^th, Paphos Lighthouse Area with 1 on 25^th and Ladies Mile with 2 on 30^th.  

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus 

Reported from Akhna Dam [2 on 26^th], Coral Bay [2 on 14^th], Kiti Dam [1 on 25^th], Oroklini Marsh [maximum daily count of 12], Paralimni Lake [2 on 20^th], Parthenitis Dam near the pig-farms [5 pairs on 27^th], Phasouri Reed Beds [1 between 11^th and 30^th] and 1 at Xeros Potamos Pools between the 10^th and 30^th when it appeared to be mock-incubating and defending territory.     

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

Reported from Asprokremmos Dam [max 9 on 27^th], Ladies Mile [max c200 on 17^th], Larnaca Sewage Works [max c30 on 29^th], Oroklini Marsh [maximum daily count of 15], Spiro's Pool [max 12 on 18^th] and Xeros Potamos Pools with c15 on 18^th and 19^th and 20 on 28^th.  

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

1 at Ladies Mile on 25^th and 3 on 30^th, 4 at Oroklini Marsh on 6^th with 1 on 25^th and 2 on 29^th and 2 at Xeros Potamos Pools from 18^th until the 30^th.  

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Reported from the 17^th at Ladies Mile with a max of 69 on the 25^th, from Larnaca Sewage Works with 7 on 2^nd and 2 on 29^th and from the 5^th to the 28^th at the Xeros Potamos Pools with a max of c12 on the 16^th.  

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

Reported from only Larnaca Sewage Works with 1 on the 11^th and from

Paralimni Lake with 2 on the 28^th, where did this species get too?  

Broad-billed Sandpiper    Limicola falcinellus

The only sighting of 2 birds at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 26^th.  

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Single-figure records from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Asprokremmos Dam, Kiti Dam [25 on 25^th], Ladies Mile [35 on 25^th], Larnaca Sewage Works [27 on 29^th], Oroklini Marsh [100 as maximum daily count], Phasouri Reed Beds [80 on 23^rd], Spiro's Pool [c20 on 2^nd], Xeros Potamos Pools [c20 on 1^st, 16^th and 18^th] and from Zakaki Marsh.  

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

Up to 3 seen from the 1^st through to the 30^th at Asprokremmos Dam, Kiti Dam, Oroklini Marsh [22 as the maximum daily count!!], Phasouri Reed Beds and Xeros Potamos Pools.  

Great Snipe    Gallinago media

Asprokremmos Dam had 1 on 18^th and 1 or 2 at Xeros Potamos Pools from 19^th to the 21^st, which delighted many observers, especially when they displayed in front of the cameras.  

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

Noticeable by their scarcity there was 1 at Spiro's Pool on the 2^nd, 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 5^th, 8^th and 9^th and 2 at Kiti Dam on the 28^th.  

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Just 2 seen at Spiro's Pool on the 2^nd and the 11^th.  

Redshank    Tringa tetanus

1 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 5^th with 2 there on the 9^th, 1 at Ladies Mile on the 27^th and 3 at Oroklini Marsh on the 30^th.  

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

Seen all month and records came from Asprokremmos Dam, Ladies Mile [6 on 25^th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh [6 on 2^nd], Phasouri Reed Beds [c30 on 17^th], Xeros Potamos Pools and Zakaki Marsh.  

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

Reported in small numbers from Asprokremmos Dam [max 5 on 16^th], Ezousa River, Ladies Mile [max 3 on 25^th], Oroklini Marsh [max 5 on 5^th] and Xeros Potamos Pools [max 2 for most of the month].  

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Seen at Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremmos Dam, Kiti Dam [5 on 25^th], Oroklini Marsh [18 on 5^th] and Xeros Potamos Pools with up to 4 from 1^st to the 14^th.  

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Exceedingly widespread with reports from Achelia Stream, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremmos Dam [10 on 16^th], Ezousa River, Kiti Dam [10 on 25^th], Ladies Mile, Larnaca Airport Pools North, Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh [30 as the maximum daily count], Phasouri Reed Beds, Phasouri Reservoir, Xeros Potamos Pools [c30 on 18^th] and Zakaki Marsh.  

Terek Sandpiper    Xenus cinereus

The only sighting with a single bird at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17^th.  

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

1’s and 2’s seen at Agia Varvara, Asprokremmos Dam [6 on 24^th], Baths of Aphrodite, Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kiti Dam, Larnaca Airport Pools North, Larnaca Salt Lake, Larnaca Sewage Works [6 on 11^th], Oroklini Marsh [maximum daily count of 5], Phasouri Reed Beds, Phasouri Reservoir, Xeros Potamos Pools [3 on 24^th], Yermasoya Dam and Zakaki Marsh.  

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

At the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 1 or 2 between the 18^th and the 29^th whilst Paphos Lighthouse Area had 2 or 3 between the 8^th and 25^th whilst there were 2 seen at Spiro’s Beach on the 27^th.  

Mediterranean Gull    Larus melanocephalus

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2^nd and 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 9^th are the only reports this month.  

Little Gull    Larus minutes

Larnaca Sewage Works had up to 3 from the 2^nd to the 28^th whilst there were 2 first-summer birds seen at Ayia Napa Sewage Works on the 20^th.  

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

Oroklini Marsh had 2 on 1^st and 1 on 5^th, Xylophagou had 14 on 2^nd, Zakaki Marsh 1 on 25^th and Larnaca Sewage Works had 12 on 11^th, 2 on 25^th and 4 on the 29^th.  

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

On Ladies Mile there were 2 on 16^th, c30 on 18^th, 8 on 26^th, 16 on 28^th, 20 on 29^th and just 1 on 30^th whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 1 on 2^nd, 14 on 11^th and 2 on 17^th until the 28^th. Away from these sites there was 1 bird at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 28^th and 9 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 8^th. 

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus

2’s at Akhna Dam on 27^th and at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25^th, 27^th and 28^th with 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 21^st.  

L.f.fuscus

3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2^nd and 1 at Mandria on the 6^th.

L.f.heuglini

Just the one report of 1 at Mandria on the 6^th with the previous [sub]-species.  

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans  

Records from Amathus, Kensington Cliffs, Ladies Mile, Larnaca Sewage Works, Latchi, Mandria [50 on 1^st], Paphos Lighthouse Area and Xeros Potamos Pools.

Just the one report of c6 birds at Mandria on the 6^th alongside both Baltic and

Heuglini’s Gulls.

The only sighting of 1 bird at Oroklini Marsh on the 24^th.    

Caspian Tern    Sterna caspia

The only sighting of 1 bird at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17^th.  

Common Tern    Sterna hirundo

Only from Larnaca Sewage Works with 2 birds from 17^th until the end of the month.  

Little Tern    Sterna albifrons

2 birds at Larnaca Sewage Works from the 17^th until the months end and 1 bird seen on Ladies Mile on the 23^rd.  

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17^th and 18^th with 2 on the 27^th.  

White-winged Black Tern    Chlidonias leucopterus

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25^th and 28^th with 1 on the 29^th and 3 seen at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 24^th, 4 on 25^th and 2 on 29^th whilst there was 1 seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 30^th.  

Rock Dove    Columba livia

3 reported from Mandria on the 1^st and 5 from Neo Chorio on the same date.  

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Reports from Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kritou Terra [reported as 3 males

guarding nesting territory! This requires a more detailed explanation from the

observers?], Liopetri, Mandria and Neo Chorio.  

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Records from Amathus, Archangelos, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Episkopi, Lakatameia, Liopetri, Mandria, Neo Chorio, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pera Orinis, Strovolos and Yermasoya Dam. The only count in double figures was 12 at Amathus from the 25^th until the 30^th.  

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

First record was from Peyia with 3 on 13^th, then many records after this date from Akrotiri Salt Lake [max 12 on 25^th], Athalassa, Bishop's Pool, Coral Bay, Evretou Dam, Latchi, Liopetri, Mandria, Peyia [max 10 on 24^th], Strakka [20 on 26^th] and Yermasoya Dam.  

Great Spotted Cuckoo   Clamator glandarius

Seen at Akamas [max 3 on 13^th], Akoursos [8 on 18^th], Anarita Park, Armou, Asprokremmos Dam, Chlorakas, Dhiarizos River Valley [3 on 2^nd], Episkopi, Evretou Dam, Kannaviou Dam, Kathikas [24 birds reported between Kathikas and the Akamas on the 20^th!], Kiti Dam [2 reported as first-summer on 28^th], Kouklia [4 on 10^th], Kritou Terra, Lythrodhonda, Marathounda, Neo Chorio [6 on 17^th], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Peyia, Strakka and near the Tsadha Golf Club.  

Cuckoo    Cuculus canorus

More numerous this year than I remember, they were seen at Akamas with 3 on 7^th, Akoursos with 1 on 18^th, Akrotiri Salt Lake with singles on 17^th, 19^th and 25^th, the one on the 19^th being the rufous form, Armou with 1 on 22^nd, Asprokremmos Dam with 1 on 18^th, Kathikas with 25 birds being reported between Kathikas and the Akamas, Lythrodhonda with 1 between 18^th and 20^th, Paphos Forest with 3 on 18^th, Paphos Lighthouse Area with 1 on 4^th and 2 on 9^th, Peyia with 1 on 1^st and 21^st and Vretsia with 1 on 18^th.  

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

Heard and/or seen at Baths of Aphrodite on 22^nd, 2 at Marathounda on 30^th, Neo Chorio on 1^st, Pera Orinis on 26^th and Strovolos on 18^th.  

Little Owl    Athene noctua

Singles at Akamas on 1^st, Asprokremmos Dam on 5^th and 24^th with 2 on 20^th and 1 at Peyia all month.  

Long-eared Owl    Asio otus

The only sighting of 1 flying over Strovolos on the 10^th.  

Short-eared Owl    Asio flammeus

2 migrating birds at Mandria on the 12^th and at Cape Greco on the 26^th.  

Nightjar    Caprimulgus europaeus

1 at Mandria, which landed in front of the observers on the 21^st and 1 at Agios Georgios on the 23^rd.  

Swift    Apus apus

Many reports all month of migrating birds and summer visitors from Amathus [max 20 between 25^th and 30^th], Archangelos, Asprokremmos Dam [c200 on 24^th], Lakatameia [max 20 at Manglis Lake on 27^th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Neo Chorio, Oroklini Marsh [35 being the maximum daily count], Paphos [max c50 on 29^th], Paramali [c50 on 30^th], Pera Orinis, Peyia, Phasouri Reed Beds [c50 between the 29^th and 30^th], Strovolos and Xeros Potamos Pools with 10 on 24^th.  

Pallid Swift    Apus pallidus

2 at Mandria on the 16^th and 2 at Baths of Aphrodite on the 22^nd.  

Alpine Swift    Apus melba

Reported from Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremmos Dam [c30 on 24^th], Kensington Cliffs with a maximum of 10 on 11^th, Oroklini Marsh, Phasouri Reed Beds and Xeros Potamos Pools.  

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

Singles from Achelia Stream, Aspro Dam Pools, Ezousa River, Kiti Dam, Mandria, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area [2 on 6^th], Phasouri Reed Beds, Pomos, Spiro's Pool and Xeros Potamos Pools. The latest sighting-date was the 24^th at the Achelia Stream.  

Pied Kingfisher    Ceryle rudis

A female frequented the Xeros Potamos Pools from the 19^th until the 21^st, a female was present at Zakaki Marsh on the 25^th and another, sex not reported, was at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 28^th.  

Bee-eater    Merops apiaster

Passage started on the 8^th but did not pick-up speed until the middle of the month. Reports came from Akamas [max 30+ on 20^th], Akrotiri Salt Lake [c60 on 30^th], Archangelos [3 on 8^th], Armou [15 on 26^th], Baths of Aphrodite [45 on 22^nd], Evretou Dam [42 on 26^th], Episkopi [20 on 23^rd], Ezousa River [15 on 21^st], Kamares [50 on 22^nd], Kouklia [max 15 on 28^th], Lythrodhonda [up to 8 between the 8^th and 30^th], Mandria [c40 on 30^th], Marathounda [max 19 on 27^th], Nicosia [21 on 18^th], Peyia [25 on 14^th], Phasouri Reed Beds [12 on 30^th], Strakka [10 on 20^th] and Xeros Potamos Pools [max c30 on 30^th].

Roller    Coracias garrulous

The first birds arrived on the 19^th at Mandria, thereafter reported from many sites across the island. Reports came from Amargeti, Anarita Park [5 on 27^th], Asprokremmos Dam, Droushia, Episkopi, Kamares, Kathikas [10 on 29^th], Akourdaleia, Larnaca Sewage Works, Mandria, Meneou, Nata, Parthenitis Dam, Petra tou Romiou, Polemi, Prodromi, Stroumbi, Tersefanou, Tsadha and Yermasoya Dam.  

Hoopoe    Upupa epops

Reported from Akamas, Armou, Asprokremmos Dam, Chlorakas, Coral Bay, Episkopi, Erimi, Evretou Dam, Kannaviou Dam, Kiti Dam, Kouklia, Lythrodhonda, Mandria, Neo Chorio, Paphos, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Paramali, Peyia, Phasouri Reed Beds and Xylophagou with 9 at Peyia on the 1^st being the highest number reported.  

Wryneck    Jynx torquilla

1’s and 2’s seen at Achelia Dam, Akamas, Akhna Dam, Evretou Dam, Liopetri, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area [3 on 8^th] and the Xeros Potamos Pools, the last date of sighting being 2 at Akhna Dam on the 27^th.  

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

2 at Mandria on the 10^th and 2 at Spiro's Pool on the 11^th with 1 singing at this site on the 29^th.  

Bimaculated Lark    Melanocorypha bimaculata

3 were seen at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 3^rd, the next sighting being 2 at the Asprokremmos Dam on the 18^th, seen by some of the participants of the Vretsia Field Meeting as they returned to Paphos and there was 1 at the same site on the 20^th, 2 were seen at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 25^th and 1 was at the Nata Ford on the 27^th. This was a good month for this species being seen.  

Short-toed Lark    Calandrella brachydactyla

Recorded from Asprokremmos Dam [max c120 on 12^th], Agios Georgios [25+ on 6^th], Coral Bay [12 on 9^th], Mandria [max c100 on 6^th], Spiro's Pool [max c40 on 2^nd] and Xeros Potamos Pools with 10 on 30^th.  

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

Reported from all suitable sites across the island, the largest count was the maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 35.

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

1 was recorded as singing at Cape Greco on the 2^nd, the previous record being on the 9^th March.      

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

Notable counts included c200 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 28^th and c100 at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 22^nd.  

Crag Martin    Ptyonoprogne rupestris

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2^nd, 2 in the Paphos Forest on the 14^th and 3 during the Field Meeting to Vretsia on the 18^th.  

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

Many records from most sites across the island. 

Red-rumped Swallow    Hirundo daurica

Away from the west and Troodos this species was reported from Liopetri, Pera Orinis and the Yermasoya Dam. There were 57 reported from Troodos on the 28^th.  

House Martin    Delichon urbicum

Reports from Asprokremmos Dam, Asproyia, Baths of Aphrodite [50 on 22^nd], Kannaviou, Lakatameia, Latchi, Nicosia, Oroklini Marsh, Panayia, Paphos Forest [c200 on 18^th], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pera Orinis, Prodromi, Strovolos and Zakaki Marsh.  

Tawny Pipit    Anthus campestris

Seen at Anarita Park [max c30 on 20^th], Agios Georgios, Cape Greco [max 6 on 2^nd], Mandria [max 4 on 6^th], Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Xeros Potamos Pools and Xylophagou with 8 on 2^nd.  

Tree Pipit    Anthus trivialis

Seen on the Akamas with a maximum of 5 on the 16^th and 20^th, Asprokremmos Dam with 2 on 17^th, Baths of Aphrodite with 4 on 2^nd, Cape Greco with 2 on 26^th, Filousa with 8 on the 8^th, Kensington Cliffs with 2 on the 21^st, Kiti Dam with 2 on the 17^th, Smygies track on the Akamas with 15 on the 22^nd, Paphos Lighthouse Area with 2 on the 24^th and Xeros Potamos Pools with 3 on the 24^th.

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

Lingering birds were at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 1^st with 4 seen, 3 at Lakatameia on the 5^th and 6 at Anarita Park on the 20^th.
