Bird Records for April 2004

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Reported in small numbers from Asprokremmos Dam, Phasouri Reed Beds [adult and 2 juvs on 17th and 6 on 25th to the 30th], Kiti Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works [6 on 18th] and Oroklini Marsh with a maximum daily count of 10 birds.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

Just the one report of 3 birds at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 11th.  

Gannet    Morus bassanus      

One off the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 14th.  

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

There were 2 on the Asprokremmos Dam on the 10th.  

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

2 off the coast at Kouklia on the 4th and 4 on the rocks at Mandria on the 7th.  

White Pelican    Pelecanus onocrotalus

There was an adult at the Asprokremmos Dam from at least the 5th until at least the 28th.  

Bittern    Botaurus stellaris

There was one at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 1st and a very confiding individual [same?] at the shallow end of the Asprokremmos Dam from the 6th until the 18th.  

Little Bittern    Ixobrychus minutes

Xeros Potamos Pools had 1 on the 4th and the 29th, 1 male at Ezousa River on 9th, 1 at Kiti Dam on 18th, 2 at Evretou Dam on 22nd, 1 female at Asprokremmos Dam on the 24th and 28th and 1 male at Akrotiri Reed Beds on the 29th.  

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

2 at Achelia Stream on 24th, 1 immature at Asprokremmos Dam on 22nd and 1 of unknown age there on 27th, 4 at Agios Georgios on 13th, 2 at Bishop's Pool on 17th, 1 at Ezousa River on 17th, 2 at Kiti Dam on both the 21st and 28th with 4 seen there on 18th, 20+ at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 8th with 2 on 24th, 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 7th with 4 there on 19th and an immature at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 20th.  

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

Quite common and widespread this month with 1 at Achelia Stream on 24th, max 6 at Asprokremmos Dam on 27th, max 5 at Kiti Dam on 25th, 1 at Larnaca Airport Pools North on 29th, 2 at Oroklini Marsh on 21st, 26th and 30th, max 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 7th and 29th, 3 at Spiro's Pool on 29th, max 4 at Xeros Potamos Pools on 17th, 24th and 28th and 1 at Yermasoya Dam on 25th.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

2 at Oroklini Marsh on 1st and 27th with 5 on 2nd, up to 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds from 11th until the month’s end and 2 at Spiro's Pool on the 27th.  

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

Widespread with reports from Achelia Dam [1], Achelia Stream [3], Akrotiri Salt Lake [3], Amathus [4], Archangelos [1], Asprokremmos Dam [max c10 on 27th], Cape Greco [2], Evretou Dam [2], Ezousa River [3], Kiti Dam [max 4 on 25th], Kouklia [max 15 on 27th], Ladies Mile [5], Larnaca Airport Pools North [4], Larnaca Sewage Works [2 on 2nd, 11th and 29th], Oroklini Marsh [max 8 on 23rd], Paphos Lighthouse Area [1], Phasouri Reed Beds [8], Spiro's Pool [5 on 11th and 18th], Xeros Potamos Pools [max 25 on 6th], Yermasoya Dam [2] and Zakaki Marsh [max 15 on 28th].  

Great White Egret   Egretta alba  

Only from Zakaki Marsh with a single bird present there from 24th to the 30th.    

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Asprokremmos Dam, Athalassa, Evretou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh, Spiro's Pool, Xeros Potamos Pools, Xylophagou, Yermasoya Dam and Zakaki Marsh with 6 at Zakaki Marsh on the 17th being the highest concentration reported.  

Purple Heron    Ardea purpurea

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake [11 on 17th], Asprokremmos Dam [1 on 9th and 16th], Athalassa [1 on 25th], Agios Georgios [c46 on 6th], Banana Bay [c60 on 8th], Episkopi [1 on 29th], Larnaca Sewage Works [6 on 18th], Mavrokolymbos Dam [80+ on 8th], Oroklini Marsh [4 on 5th], Phasouri Reed Beds [max 100+ on 7th], Spiro's Pool [10 on 2nd], Xeros Potamos Pools [max 36 on 17th] and Zakaki Marsh [max 2 on 25th].  

White Stork    Ciconia ciconia

The only sighting of a single bird seen at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 9th.  

Glossy Ibis    Plegadis falcinellus

Reported from Asprokremmos Dam [max of 3 on 9th and 24th], Kiti Dam [max 2 on 21st and 28th], Oroklini Marsh [max 173 on 16th], Paphos Lighthouse Area [2 on 24th], Paralimni Lake [2 on 20th], Phasouri Reed Beds [max of c40 on 19th, 22nd and 25th], Pomos [1 on 10th], Tekke Pools [1 on 18th], Xeros Potamos Pools [max 5 on 9th] and Zakaki Marsh [3 on 17th].  

Spoonbill    Platalea leucorodia

Singles at Zakaki Marsh on 7th and 17th with 2 on 16th and 2 at Xeros Potamos Pools on 8th with 7 seen from there on 24th.  

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus rubber

180 was the maximum number seen on the 17th at Akrotiri Salt Lake whilst the maximum number at Larnaca Salt Lake was 40 on the 18th. Away from these sites there was 1 at Kiti Dam on the 29th, 90 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 11th and 7 at Spiro's Pool on the 29th.  

Gadwall    Anas strepera

6 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 2nd with 2 there on 11th.  

Teal    Anas crecca

At Larnaca Sewage Works there were c20 on the 2nd with just a lone male on the 29th and 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.  

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

A pair at Athalassa on 18th, 2 birds at Larnaca Salt Lake on 29th, c80 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 2nd with 14 still there on 29th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 16th with 2 on 19th and 1 at Yermasoya Dam on 29th.  

Pintail    Anas acuta

Up to 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works from 2nd until 29th and 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 16th and 22nd.  

Garganey    Anas querquedula

Asprokremmos Dam had 3 on 9th, up to 20 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 11th and the 29th, Oroklini Marsh had a maximum daily count of 20 whilst up to 10 were present at Phasouri Reed Beds from 11th to the 25th whilst a lone male was present at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 24th.  

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 28th whilst the numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works dropped from c100 on the 2nd to just 6 on the 29th with 1 being present at the Xeros Potamos Pools from the 1st to the 6th.  

Pochard    Aythya farina

Up to 2 birds were present at Larnaca Sewage Works from the 2nd until the 29th with 2 at Kiti Dam on the 28th.  

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There was 1 bird at Phasouri Reed Beds from the 12th until the 27th; being reported as a female on all dates except the 12th [being such a secretive bird there could of course have been a pair present?] and 1 bird at Zakaki Marsh on the 7th the sex not being reported.  

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

8 at Kensington Cliffs on the 22nd was the maximum number reported from this site whilst 9 were reported from Vretsia on the 18th.  

Black Vulture    Aegypius monachus

At Kensington Cliffs on the 22nd.  

Short-toed Eagle    Circaetus gallicus

An adult was seen near the Birdlife Office at Strakka on the 14th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

Unless otherwise stated, singles were seen at Achelia Dam, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Asprokremmos Dam, Cape Greco [1 male and 3 females on 2nd], Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kiti Dam [2 on 21st], Ladies Mile [2 on 28th], Larnaca Sewage Works [2 on 28th], Mandria [max 2 on 6th], Oroklini Marsh, Phasouri Reed Beds [max 5 on 22nd], Polis Reed Beds, Xeros Potamos Pools, Yermasoya Dam and Zakaki Marsh.  

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 28th.  

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

7 males at Cape Greco on the 2nd, 1 female at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2nd, 2 males at Xylophagou on the 2nd, 1 bird at Oroklini Marsh on the 6th, 2 birds at Pachyammos and Polis on the 11th, 1 female at Kritou Terra on the 13th, 2 birds at Ladies Mile on the 16th and 1 female at Asprokremmos Dam on the 20th.  

Montagu’s Harrier    Circus pygargus

1 male at Asprokremmos Dam from the 18th to the 22nd, 2 male and 2 females together at the Asprokremmos Dam on the 24th, a male and a female at Kivisili on the 21st, 2 birds at Evretou Dam on the 22nd, 2 at Anarita Park on the 23rd and 2 birds at Cape Greco on the 26th with 1 bird at Evretou Dam on the 26th too.  

Harrier spp.

A ring-tail was reported from Psilomofou on the 26th.  

Goshawk    Accipiter gentiles

Single birds seen at Panayia on 6th, Caledonian Trail on 9th, Akamas on 12th and at Kathikas on the 29th.  

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo   

B.b.buteo

1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th is the only sighting.

B.b.vulpinus

Singles at Evretou Dam on 1st, Pyla Range on 2nd, Phasouri Reed Beds on 16th and at Zakaki Marsh on the 17th.  

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

A pair on site was reported from the Akamas area on the 1st, 1 at Agios Georgios on the 11th and 1 at Vretsia on the 18th plus a pair near the Evretou Dam on the 16th and another pair at Makounta on the 26th.  

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

Single birds seen at Archimandrita on 7th, Tsadha on 10th, at Ineia on 12th and 27th, at Evretou Dam on 16th, Peyia on 27th and 28th, at Omodhos on 29th and 3 birds at the Evretou Dam on the 13th.

Lesser Kestrel    Falco naumanni

Between the 18th and the 24th there were up to 9 birds at Anarita Park, 9 being reported on the 20th. Away from this site there was just the one report of a single male at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 25th.  

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

As expected, this species was reported from most sites visited during the month with records from Achelia Dam, Akamas, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Anarita Park, Archangelos, Cape Greco [8 on 2nd], Evretou Dam, Kamares, Kannaviou Dam, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pera Orinis, Strovolos and Xylophagou.  

Red-footed Falcon    Falco vespertinus

At Anarita Park there were up to 8 birds present between the 18th and the 30th when they were to be seen in the company of the previously reported Lesser Kestrels. Away from this site there was a male at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 25th, a male at Curium on 25th, 3 males and 2 females at Kivisili on the 21st and 2 birds at Kofinou on the same date with 4 birds at Oroklini Marsh on 20th, 2 females at Phasouri Reed Beds on 19th and 6 birds at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 20th.

Merlin    Falco columbarius

The only sighting this month with 1 bird at Agios Georgios on the 6th.  

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

First report was of 2 at Kensington Cliffs on the 21st and then daily from this site thereafter with a maximum of 10 on the 25th.  

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

1 or 2 reported from Kensington Cliffs mid-month, 2 reported from the Vretsia area during the Field Meeting on the 18th and single birds seen at Evretou Dam on the 18th and at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 25th.   

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from most sites across the island, the highest concentrations were 8 at Amathus in the latter part of the month and a maximum daily count from Oroklini Marsh of 4 birds. 

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

1 or 2 reported from most of the western sites but reports also from Athalassa, Liopetri and Oroklini Marsh in the east. 

Quail    Coturnix coturnix

Records from Coral Bay [1-4], Filousa, Nata, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area [1-6], Paphos Sewage Works, Strakka [3 heard] and Yermasoya Dam. 

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

Just the one report of a single bird at Oroklini Marsh on the 15th.  

Spotted Crake    Porzana porzana

Reported from Xeros Potamos Pools on the 7th and the 10th and from Oroklini Marsh on the 21st.  

Little Crake    Porzana parva

1 male was present at the Aspro Dam Pools from the 1st to the 6th with an amazing 6 birds seen there on the 7th. Also reported from Xeros Potamos Pools with 1 bird on the 21st and the 22nd with 3 on the 24th and another amazing count of 7 birds on the 28th.  

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Reported from all wetlands across the island with the highest total being the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 5 birds. 3 juvs with an adult were reported from Yermasoya Dam on the 29th.  

Coot    Fulica atra

Again, reported from most wetland across the island, breeding records came from Athalassa with 3 juvs seen on 18th and then multiple broods on the 25th. Oroklini Marsh had a maximum daily count of 12 birds.  

Common Crane    Grus grus

2 were seen by many birders at Mandria during the 4th to the 16th, from the 10th being joined by the next species.  

Demoiselle Crane    Anthropoides virgo

A single adult bird consorted with the previous species during the 10th to the 16th giving many people not only their first view of this delightful species but enabling detailed comparisons to be made with the Common variety.  

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

Common and widespread at most wetland-sites all month the higher numbers being 22 at Evretou Dam on the 1st, a maximum daily count of 40 at Oroklini Marsh with 12 pairs taking up residence, c50 at Spiro's Pool with many pairs nesting and 18 being present at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 6th. Nesting was also observed at Phasouri Reed Beds with at least 2 pairs incubating.  

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

Up to 3 birds reported from Mandria until the 17th with 1 bird being reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th.  

Collared Pratincole    Glareola pratincola 

Present at Phasouri Reed Beds between the 16th and the 30th with 25 birds being

reported on the 22nd whilst 1 bird was seen at Mandria on the 12th.  

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

Seen at Aspro Dam Pools [2 on 6th], Asprokremmos Dam [6 on 5th and 4 on 10th and 24th], Kiti Dam [10 on 11th and 6 on 18th], Larnaca Sewage Works [5 on 11th], Oroklini Marsh with a maximum daily count of 12, Phasouri Reed Beds [6 on 11th] and Xeros Potamos Pools with up to 20 birds between the 1st and pools drying out towards the end of the month when only 1 was present on the 28th. Also 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 28th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

2 at Ezousa River on 9th, 10 at Ladies Mile on 17th then only 1 there from 25th to 30th, 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25th, 1 at Xeros Potamos Pools on 28th with 2 there on 29th and 30th and 1 at Zakaki Marsh on 24th.  

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

Present at Ladies Mile with a high of 12 on the 16th, Larnaca Sewage Works with a high of 15 on the 2nd, Spiro's Pool with a high of 4 on the 18th, 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 29th and 2 at Oroklini Marsh on the 3rd with only 1 on the 4th and the 24th.  

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

Passage birds noted at Mandria with 1 on 18th and 3 on 20th, Paphos Lighthouse Area with 1 on 25th and Ladies Mile with 2 on 30th.  

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus 

Reported from Akhna Dam [2 on 26th], Coral Bay [2 on 14th], Kiti Dam [1 on 25th], Oroklini Marsh [maximum daily count of 12], Paralimni Lake [2 on 20th], Parthenitis Dam near the pig-farms [5 pairs on 27th], Phasouri Reed Beds [1 between 11th and 30th] and 1 at Xeros Potamos Pools between the 10th and 30th when it appeared to be mock-incubating and defending territory.     

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

Reported from Asprokremmos Dam [max 9 on 27th], Ladies Mile [max c200 on 17th], Larnaca Sewage Works [max c30 on 29th], Oroklini Marsh [maximum daily count of 15], Spiro's Pool [max 12 on 18th] and Xeros Potamos Pools with c15 on 18th and 19th and 20 on 28th.  

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

1 at Ladies Mile on 25th and 3 on 30th, 4 at Oroklini Marsh on 6th with 1 on 25th and 2 on 29th and 2 at Xeros Potamos Pools from 18th until the 30th.  

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Reported from the 17th at Ladies Mile with a max of 69 on the 25th, from Larnaca Sewage Works with 7 on 2nd and 2 on 29th and from the 5th to the 28th at the Xeros Potamos Pools with a max of c12 on the 16th.  

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

Reported from only Larnaca Sewage Works with 1 on the 11th and from

Paralimni Lake with 2 on the 28th, where did this species get too?  

Broad-billed Sandpiper    Limicola falcinellus

The only sighting of 2 birds at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 26th.  

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Single-figure records from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Asprokremmos Dam, Kiti Dam [25 on 25th], Ladies Mile [35 on 25th], Larnaca Sewage Works [27 on 29th], Oroklini Marsh [100 as maximum daily count], Phasouri Reed Beds [80 on 23rd], Spiro's Pool [c20 on 2nd], Xeros Potamos Pools [c20 on 1st, 16th and 18th] and from Zakaki Marsh.  

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

Up to 3 seen from the 1st through to the 30th at Asprokremmos Dam, Kiti Dam, Oroklini Marsh [22 as the maximum daily count!!], Phasouri Reed Beds and Xeros Potamos Pools.  

Great Snipe    Gallinago media

Asprokremmos Dam had 1 on 18th and 1 or 2 at Xeros Potamos Pools from 19th to the 21st, which delighted many observers, especially when they displayed in front of the cameras.  

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

Noticeable by their scarcity there was 1 at Spiro's Pool on the 2nd, 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 5th, 8th and 9th and 2 at Kiti Dam on the 28th.  

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Just 2 seen at Spiro's Pool on the 2nd and the 11th.  

Redshank    Tringa tetanus

1 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 5th with 2 there on the 9th, 1 at Ladies Mile on the 27th and 3 at Oroklini Marsh on the 30th.  

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

Seen all month and records came from Asprokremmos Dam, Ladies Mile [6 on 25th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh [6 on 2nd], Phasouri Reed Beds [c30 on 17th], Xeros Potamos Pools and Zakaki Marsh.  

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

Reported in small numbers from Asprokremmos Dam [max 5 on 16th], Ezousa River, Ladies Mile [max 3 on 25th], Oroklini Marsh [max 5 on 5th] and Xeros Potamos Pools [max 2 for most of the month].  

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Seen at Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremmos Dam, Kiti Dam [5 on 25th], Oroklini Marsh [18 on 5th] and Xeros Potamos Pools with up to 4 from 1st to the 14th.  

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Exceedingly widespread with reports from Achelia Stream, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremmos Dam [10 on 16th], Ezousa River, Kiti Dam [10 on 25th], Ladies Mile, Larnaca Airport Pools North, Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh [30 as the maximum daily count], Phasouri Reed Beds, Phasouri Reservoir, Xeros Potamos Pools [c30 on 18th] and Zakaki Marsh.  

Terek Sandpiper    Xenus cinereus

The only sighting with a single bird at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17th.  

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

1’s and 2’s seen at Agia Varvara, Asprokremmos Dam [6 on 24th], Baths of Aphrodite, Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kiti Dam, Larnaca Airport Pools North, Larnaca Salt Lake, Larnaca Sewage Works [6 on 11th], Oroklini Marsh [maximum daily count of 5], Phasouri Reed Beds, Phasouri Reservoir, Xeros Potamos Pools [3 on 24th], Yermasoya Dam and Zakaki Marsh.  

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

At the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 1 or 2 between the 18th and the 29th whilst Paphos Lighthouse Area had 2 or 3 between the 8th and 25th whilst there were 2 seen at Spiro’s Beach on the 27th.  

Mediterranean Gull    Larus melanocephalus

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2nd and 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 9th are the only reports this month.  

Little Gull    Larus minutes

Larnaca Sewage Works had up to 3 from the 2nd to the 28th whilst there were 2 first-summer birds seen at Ayia Napa Sewage Works on the 20th.  

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

Oroklini Marsh had 2 on 1st and 1 on 5th, Xylophagou had 14 on 2nd, Zakaki Marsh 1 on 25th and Larnaca Sewage Works had 12 on 11th, 2 on 25th and 4 on the 29th.  

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

On Ladies Mile there were 2 on 16th, c30 on 18th, 8 on 26th, 16 on 28th, 20 on 29th and just 1 on 30th whilst Larnaca Sewage Works had 1 on 2nd, 14 on 11th and 2 on 17th until the 28th. Away from these sites there was 1 bird at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 28th and 9 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 8th

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus

2’s at Akhna Dam on 27th and at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25th, 27th and 28th with 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 21st.  

L.f.fuscus

3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2nd and 1 at Mandria on the 6th.

L.f.heuglini

Just the one report of 1 at Mandria on the 6th with the previous [sub]-species.  

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans  

Records from Amathus, Kensington Cliffs, Ladies Mile, Larnaca Sewage Works, Latchi, Mandria [50 on 1st], Paphos Lighthouse Area and Xeros Potamos Pools.

Armenian Gull    Larus armenicus

Just the one report of c6 birds at Mandria on the 6th alongside both Baltic and

Heuglini’s Gulls.      

Gull-billed Tern    Gelochelidon nilotica                                                        

The only sighting of 1 bird at Oroklini Marsh on the 24th.    

Caspian Tern    Sterna caspia

The only sighting of 1 bird at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17th.  

Common Tern    Sterna hirundo

Only from Larnaca Sewage Works with 2 birds from 17th until the end of the month.  

Little Tern    Sterna albifrons

2 birds at Larnaca Sewage Works from the 17th until the months end and 1 bird seen on Ladies Mile on the 23rd.  

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17th and 18th with 2 on the 27th.

2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 25th and 28th with 1 on the 29th and 3 seen at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 24th, 4 on 25th and 2 on 29th whilst there was 1 seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 30th.

3 reported from Mandria on the 1st and 5 from Neo Chorio on the same date.  

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Reports from Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kritou Terra [reported as 3 males

guarding nesting territory! This requires a more detailed explanation from the

observers?], Liopetri, Mandria and Neo Chorio.  

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Records from Amathus, Archangelos, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Episkopi, Lakatameia, Liopetri, Mandria, Neo Chorio, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pera Orinis, Strovolos and Yermasoya Dam. The only count in double figures was 12 at Amathus from the 25th until the 30th.  

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

First record was from Peyia with 3 on 13th, then many records after this date from Akrotiri Salt Lake [max 12 on 25th], Athalassa, Bishop's Pool, Coral Bay, Evretou Dam, Latchi, Liopetri, Mandria, Peyia [max 10 on 24th], Strakka [20 on 26th] and Yermasoya Dam.  

Great Spotted Cuckoo   Clamator glandarius

Seen at Akamas [max 3 on 13th], Akoursos [8 on 18th], Anarita Park, Armou, Asprokremmos Dam, Chlorakas, Dhiarizos River Valley [3 on 2nd], Episkopi, Evretou Dam, Kannaviou Dam, Kathikas [24 birds reported between Kathikas and the Akamas on the 20th!], Kiti Dam [2 reported as first-summer on 28th], Kouklia [4 on 10th], Kritou Terra, Lythrodhonda, Marathounda, Neo Chorio [6 on 17th], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Peyia, Strakka and near the Tsadha Golf Club.  

Cuckoo    Cuculus canorus

More numerous this year than I remember, they were seen at Akamas with 3 on 7th, Akoursos with 1 on 18th, Akrotiri Salt Lake with singles on 17th, 19th and 25th, the one on the 19th being the rufous form, Armou with 1 on 22nd, Asprokremmos Dam with 1 on 18th, Kathikas with 25 birds being reported between Kathikas and the Akamas, Lythrodhonda with 1 between 18th and 20th, Paphos Forest with 3 on 18th, Paphos Lighthouse Area with 1 on 4th and 2 on 9th, Peyia with 1 on 1st and 21st and Vretsia with 1 on 18th.  

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

Heard and/or seen at Baths of Aphrodite on 22nd, 2 at Marathounda on 30th, Neo Chorio on 1st, Pera Orinis on 26th and Strovolos on 18th.  

Little Owl    Athene noctua

Singles at Akamas on 1st, Asprokremmos Dam on 5th and 24th with 2 on 20th and 1 at Peyia all month.  

Long-eared Owl    Asio otus

The only sighting of 1 flying over Strovolos on the 10th.  

Short-eared Owl    Asio flammeus

2 migrating birds at Mandria on the 12th and at Cape Greco on the 26th.  

Nightjar    Caprimulgus europaeus

1 at Mandria, which landed in front of the observers on the 21st and 1 at Agios Georgios on the 23rd.  

Swift    Apus apus

Many reports all month of migrating birds and summer visitors from Amathus [max 20 between 25th and 30th], Archangelos, Asprokremmos Dam [c200 on 24th], Lakatameia [max 20 at Manglis Lake on 27th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Neo Chorio, Oroklini Marsh [35 being the maximum daily count], Paphos [max c50 on 29th], Paramali [c50 on 30th], Pera Orinis, Peyia, Phasouri Reed Beds [c50 between the 29th and 30th], Strovolos and Xeros Potamos Pools with 10 on 24th.  

Pallid Swift    Apus pallidus

2 at Mandria on the 16th and 2 at Baths of Aphrodite on the 22nd.  

Alpine Swift    Apus melba

Reported from Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremmos Dam [c30 on 24th], Kensington Cliffs with a maximum of 10 on 11th, Oroklini Marsh, Phasouri Reed Beds and Xeros Potamos Pools.  

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

Singles from Achelia Stream, Aspro Dam Pools, Ezousa River, Kiti Dam, Mandria, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area [2 on 6th], Phasouri Reed Beds, Pomos, Spiro's Pool and Xeros Potamos Pools. The latest sighting-date was the 24th at the Achelia Stream.  

Pied Kingfisher    Ceryle rudis

A female frequented the Xeros Potamos Pools from the 19th until the 21st, a female was present at Zakaki Marsh on the 25th and another, sex not reported, was at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 28th.  

Bee-eater    Merops apiaster

Passage started on the 8th but did not pick-up speed until the middle of the month. Reports came from Akamas [max 30+ on 20th], Akrotiri Salt Lake [c60 on 30th], Archangelos [3 on 8th], Armou [15 on 26th], Baths of Aphrodite [45 on 22nd], Evretou Dam [42 on 26th], Episkopi [20 on 23rd], Ezousa River [15 on 21st], Kamares [50 on 22nd], Kouklia [max 15 on 28th], Lythrodhonda [up to 8 between the 8th and 30th], Mandria [c40 on 30th], Marathounda [max 19 on 27th], Nicosia [21 on 18th], Peyia [25 on 14th], Phasouri Reed Beds [12 on 30th], Strakka [10 on 20th] and Xeros Potamos Pools [max c30 on 30th].

Roller    Coracias garrulous

The first birds arrived on the 19th at Mandria, thereafter reported from many sites across the island. Reports came from Amargeti, Anarita Park [5 on 27th], Asprokremmos Dam, Droushia, Episkopi, Kamares, Kathikas [10 on 29th], Akourdaleia, Larnaca Sewage Works, Mandria, Meneou, Nata, Parthenitis Dam, Petra tou Romiou, Polemi, Prodromi, Stroumbi, Tersefanou, Tsadha and Yermasoya Dam.  

Hoopoe    Upupa epops

Reported from Akamas, Armou, Asprokremmos Dam, Chlorakas, Coral Bay, Episkopi, Erimi, Evretou Dam, Kannaviou Dam, Kiti Dam, Kouklia, Lythrodhonda, Mandria, Neo Chorio, Paphos, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Paramali, Peyia, Phasouri Reed Beds and Xylophagou with 9 at Peyia on the 1st being the highest number reported.  

Wryneck    Jynx torquilla

1’s and 2’s seen at Achelia Dam, Akamas, Akhna Dam, Evretou Dam, Liopetri, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area [3 on 8th] and the Xeros Potamos Pools, the last date of sighting being 2 at Akhna Dam on the 27th.  

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

2 at Mandria on the 10th and 2 at Spiro's Pool on the 11th with 1 singing at this site on the 29th.  

Bimaculated Lark    Melanocorypha bimaculata

3 were seen at the Xeros Potamos Pools on the 3rd, the next sighting being 2 at the Asprokremmos Dam on the 18th, seen by some of the participants of the Vretsia Field Meeting as they returned to Paphos and there was 1 at the same site on the 20th, 2 were seen at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 25th and 1 was at the Nata Ford on the 27th. This was a good month for this species being seen.  

Short-toed Lark    Calandrella brachydactyla

Recorded from Asprokremmos Dam [max c120 on 12th], Agios Georgios [25+ on 6th], Coral Bay [12 on 9th], Mandria [max c100 on 6th], Spiro's Pool [max c40 on 2nd] and Xeros Potamos Pools with 10 on 30th.  

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

Reported from all suitable sites across the island, the largest count was the maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 35.

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

1 was recorded as singing at Cape Greco on the 2nd, the previous record being on the 9th March.      

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

Notable counts included c200 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 28th and c100 at Xeros Potamos Pools on the 22nd.  

Crag Martin    Ptyonoprogne rupestris

1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 2nd, 2 in the Paphos Forest on the 14th and 3 during the Field Meeting to Vretsia on the 18th.  

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

Many records from most sites across the island. 

Red-rumped Swallow    Hirundo daurica

Away from the west and Troodos this species was reported from Liopetri, Pera Orinis and the Yermasoya Dam. There were 57 reported from Troodos on the 28th.  

House Martin    Delichon urbicum

Reports from Asprokremmos Dam, Asproyia, Baths of Aphrodite [50 on 22nd], Kannaviou, Lakatameia, Latchi, Nicosia, Oroklini Marsh, Panayia, Paphos Forest [c200 on 18th], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pera Orinis, Prodromi, Strovolos and Zakaki Marsh.  

Tawny Pipit    Anthus campestris

Seen at Anarita Park [max c30 on 20th], Agios Georgios, Cape Greco [max 6 on 2nd], Mandria [max 4 on 6th], Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Xeros Potamos Pools and Xylophagou with 8 on 2nd.  

Tree Pipit    Anthus trivialis

Seen on the Akamas with a maximum of 5 on the 16th and 20th, Asprokremmos Dam with 2 on 17th, Baths of Aphrodite with 4 on 2nd, Cape Greco with 2 on 26th, Filousa with 8 on the 8th, Kensington Cliffs with 2 on the 21st, Kiti Dam with 2 on the 17th, Smygies track on the Akamas with 15 on the 22nd, Paphos Lighthouse Area with 2 on the 24th and Xeros Potamos Pools with 3 on the 24th.

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

Lingering birds were at Paphos Lighthouse Area on 1st with 4 seen, 3 at Lakatameia on the 5th and 6 at Anarita Park on the 20th.

Reported from Agios Georgios, Oroklini Marsh, Spiro's Pool, Yermasoya Dam and Xeros Potamos Pools. The largest concentration was of only c10 birds at Spiro's Pool on
