Bird Records for January 2004

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 20, there were 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds until at least the 10^th, c25 at Zakaki Marsh during the same period, c50 at Larnaca Sewage Works most of the month, 10 at Akhna Dam on the 26^th, 1 or 2 at Aspro Dam Pools most of the month, 1 at Athalassa on the 1^st but 4 heard there on the 17^th, 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 18^th, 12 at the Polemedhia Dam on the 1^st and finally 17 reported from Zakaki Marsh on the 18^th but only 10 there on the 20^th.

Great Crested Grebe    Podiceps cristatus

There was 1 at Yermasoya Dam from the 1^st to the 10^th, a maximum of 8 at Akhna Dam on the 30^th, a maximum of 10 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 10^th, 1 at Kiti Dam on the 15^th, 1 at Kouris Dam on the 20^th and 1 at Spiro’s Pool on both the 18^th and the 25^th.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

The numbers reported from Larnaca Sewage Works varied from just 10 at the start of the month to 80 on the 27^th with single birds at Oroklini on the 3^rd and the 7^th and at Akhna Dam on the 2^nd.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

Maximums at the various sites were 18 at Polemedhia Dam on 1^st and 6^th, just 1 at Yermasoya Dam until the 10^th, c300 at Larnaca Sewage Works from 15^th until the end of the month, 6 at Amathus on 10^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 4^th, 14 at Asprokremnos Dam on 30^th, 2 at Bishop's Pool on 18^th, 3 at Evretou Dam on 18^th, 2 at Kouris Dam on 20^th and 7 in the Paphos Harbour on the 6^th.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

At Kensington Cliffs there were 2 on the 1^st and 4 on the 9^th whilst the only other site reporting this species was Mandria with 2 on the 26^th.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

Phasouri Reed Beds had between 1 and 9 birds present for most of the month with the maximum reported on the 18^th, Aspro Dam Pools had between 1 and 3 present for most of the month too with its maximum being on the 16^th. Oroklini had 1 or 2 present from the 6^th for the remainder of the month whilst there was a single bird seen at Ayios Nikolaos on the 14^th and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 16^th.  

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

There was a single bird at Zakaki Marsh from the 1^st to the 7^th, single birds again at Oroklini on the 3^rd with 4 on the 5^th and 1 at Athalassa on the 17^th. There were 10 at Paralimni Lake on the 11^th and 4 birds over flew Akhna Dam on the 26^th.

Great White Egret   Egretta alba 

A single bird was present at Zakaki Marsh from the 1^st to at least the 10^th plus single birds also seen on Ladies Mile on the 22^nd and the 29^th, probably the Zakaki Marsh bird?   

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

Reported from Polemedhia Dam with 1 on both the 1^st and the 6^th, 3 at Oroklini all month, 1 at Yermasoya Dam from the 3^rd until the 10^th, 3 at Akhna Dam on the 9^th, 5 at Kalavasos on the 7^th, either 1 or 2 at Asprokremnos Dam from the 10^th to the 30^th, 2 at Evretou Dam on the 18^th, up to 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 4^th and the 21^st whilst Zakaki Marsh had 15 on the 1^st, 12 on the 3^rd, 4 on the 5^th, 5 on the 9^th but only 1 on the 18^th.   

Black Stork    Ciconia nigra

A most unusual January sighting was 1 bird at Strovolos in a river bed on the 3^rd plus another/same bird? in Nicosia behind the hospital on the 13^th.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

c200 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 10^th but between the 15^th and by the 31^st numbers had increased to between 3 and 4 thousand birds. At Akrotiri Salt Lake the numbers on the 18^th during the Waterfowl Count were reported as 6,530 whilst the numbers on the 20^th had droped to 5,700 birds.

White-fronted Goose    Anser albifrons

The flock present at Larnaca Sewage Works was reported as being just 2 strong on the 15^th but 40 strong on the 21^st, showing that they move around the area and are not always on view from the hide. The final report was of 30 birds on the 25^th. There was also a single bird present at Akhna Dam on the 27^th.=

Lesser White-fronted Goose           Anser erythropus

Just 2 of the original 3 present at Akhna Dam on the 10^th and then, between this date and the 27^th, another went missing [poached?] as just the 1 was present on the 27^th.

Greylag Goose    Anser anser

2 at Akhna Dam on the 26^th and also saw another at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 29^th.

Ruddy Shelduck    Tadorna ferruginea

There is only the one report of a single bird at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 1^st but from Birdline there was a report of 90+ there during the month.

Shelduck    Tadorna tadorna

The numbers at Akrotiri Salt Lake increased from c150 on the 1^st to 500+ on 9^th but unfortunately only 150 were seen there during the Waterfowl Count on the 18^th and subsequently on the 20^th. There were c500 reported from Larnaca Salt Lake on the 30^th, c60 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29^th and 2 at Oroklini on the 9^th.

Wigeon    Anas penelope

There were up to 32 at the Asprokremnos Dam until at least the 17^th, 21 at Evretou Dam on the 18^th, a maximum of 60 at Larnaca Sewage Works during the month, just 2 at Oroklini on the 26^th and the 27^th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 6^th, 23 at Spiro’s Pool on the 8^th and a maximum of 12 at Zakaki Marsh on the 3^rd.

Gadwall    Anas strepera

2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18^th, up to 50 at Larnaca Sewage Works during the month and 15 at Zakaki Marsh on the 18^th.

Teal    Anas crecca

Approximately a thousand were seen at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18^th, a single female at Aspro Dam Pools from the 4^th to the 17^th, 105 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17^th, 11 at Bishop's Pool on the 18^th, 12 at Kalavasos Dam on the 7^th, up to 500 at Larnaca Sewage Works and 220 at Phasouri Reed Beds during the month, 10 at Yermasoya Dam between the 1^st and the 10^th, 8 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st but only a maximum of 5 there between the 3^rd and the 10^th and finally Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 250 birds.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

Akhna Dam had 12 on 2^nd, Akrotiri Salt Lake a maximum of 500 on 18^th, Aspro Dam Pools 1 on 17^th, Asprokremnos Dam 64 on 17^th, Athalassa 2 on 1^st, Evretou Dam 24 on 18^th, Kouris Dam 4 on 20^th, Larnaca Airport Pools North 7 on 8^th, Larnaca Sewage Works up to 300 during month, Phasouri Reed Beds c20 on 1^st, Spiro’s Pool 8 on 4^th, Yermasoya Dam a maximum of 57 between the 1^st and the 10^th, Zakaki Marsh 4 on 6^th and finally Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 14 birds.

Pintail    Anas acuta

120 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20^th but unfortunately only 5 were reported on 18^th during the Waterfowl Count. Larnaca Airport Pools North had 3 on 18^th, Larnaca Salt Lake 63 on 18^th, Larnaca Sewage Works up to 50 during the month, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 3^rd and 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 8^th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

300 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18^th with 170 on the 20^th, up to 1,500 all month at Larnaca Sewage Works, 1 at Oroklini on the 27^th and a maximum at Phasouri Reed Beds of 39 on the 18^th.

Red-crested Pochard    Netta rufina

Evretou Dam on the 18^th there was both a male and female present but only single males at Ladies Mile on the 29^th and at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 10^th and the 24^th.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

There were 7 at Yermasoya Dam from the 1^st until the 10^th, 30 at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18^th, 4 on Bishop's Pool on the same date and also 5 at Evretou Dam on the 18^th, Larnaca Sewage Works had a maximum during the month of 150 on the 21^st whilst there was just a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 2^nd.

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There were 2 birds reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 1^st but only a single bird on the 9^th and the 10^th. There was also a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 10^th with a single bird at Oroklini on most dates from the 18^th.

Tufted Duck    Aythya fuligula

The maximum at Larnaca Sewage Works was 8 on the 15^th with 5 on Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on both the 2^nd and the 9^th but with 3 reported from this location on the 18^th during the Waterfowl Count.

White-headed Duck    Oxyura leucocephala

A single first winter male was reported from Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18^th and from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21^st, 25^th and the 31^st, all presumably relating to the same bird?

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

There were 6 reported from Kensington Cliffs on the 1^st, 9 on the 2^nd [with 2 carrying nesting material] and 9 on the 29^th with 1 in the Dhiarizos River Valley on the 4^th and 2 at Ayios Nikolaos [Paphos] on the 28^th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

There was a maximum of 4, including 1 adult male, at Phasouri Reed Beds between the 1^st and 10^th with lesser numbers until the end of the month there, a female at Akhna Dam seen on the 9^th and the 27^th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18^th with 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the same date, 1 at Oroklini on most dates from the 14^th, a maximum of 4 seen at Zakaki Marsh on the 20^th and 2 birds at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 31^st.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

All records this month refer to lone birds at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 1^st, Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 8^th [male], Akhna Dam on 17^th, on 18^th at Evretou Dam, Larnaca Desalination Plant and Larnaca Salt Lake, Mandria on 19^th and Marathounda on 26^th.

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

There was a wandering/wintering sub-adult male seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17^th.

Sparrowhawk    Accipiter nisus

All reports refer to lone birds at Aspro Dam Pools on 4^th, Mandria on 4^th, Pera Orinis on 4^th, Marathounda on 6^th, Yermasoya Dam on 9^th and Akhna Dam on 10^th and the 27^th.

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo

All reports are of single birds at Phasouri Reed Beds between 1^st and 10^th, Kensington Cliffs on 2^nd, Cape Greco on 11^th, Akhna Dam on 17^th and on the 18^th at Larnaca Salt Lake and at Phasouri Reed Beds. 

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

1 bird at Chrysochou on the 27^th.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

2 adult birds seen at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17^th, 1 at Marathounda on the 25^th and 1 at Chrysochou on the 27^th.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

Reported from Strovolos, Oroklini, Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amargeti, Asprokremnos Dam [3 on 17^th], Episkopi [3 on 14^th], Evretou Dam [3 on 18^th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Marathounda [3 on a daily basis], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pentadactylos, Phasouri Reed Beds [4 on 18^th], Psimolofou and Yeroskipou [3 on 24^th].

Merlin    Falco columbarius

1 at Mandria on the 2^nd and the 17^th plus 1 at Akhna Bridge on the 9^th.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

All sightings refer to single birds at the Phasouri Reed Beds on 1^st, Dhiarizos River Valley on 4^th, Aspro Dam Pools on 17^th, Evretou Dam on 18^th, Pentadactylos on 20^th and Episkopi on the 27^th. 

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from all locations across the island with higher counts being seen at Oroklini with 30 all month, 17 at Amathus between the 1^st and the 10^th and 10 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17^th.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

Oroklini had up to 2 most of the month, Aspro Dam Pools had 3on 16^th and 2 on 17^th, Akhna Dam had 3 on 30^th and Ayios Nikolaos had 1 also on the 30^th.

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

1 was present at the Aspro Dam Pools all month with 3 being seen there on the 27^th and 2 on the 28^th.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Present at most wetlands with higher counts coming from Athalassa with 26 on the 17^th and 14 on the 18^th, Bishop's Pool with 11 on 18^th and an Oroklini maximum daily count of 6 birds.

Coot    Fulica atra

Present at most wetlands across the island with higher counts at Akhna Dam with c300 on 27^th, Larnaca Sewage Works with c250 on 21^st, Phasouri Reed Beds with c200 on 18^th and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of c100 birds. All other sites were either double or single figures and included Yermasoya Dam Zakaki Marsh, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Athalassa, Bishop's Pool, Evretou Dam and Polemedhia Dam.

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

2 to 10 were heard most nights at Ayios Nikolaos, 8 down the Xeros Potamos on the 5^th and the 8^th, 5 at Mandria on the 17^th with 6 there on the 24^th and 14 seen at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18^th.

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

1 bird at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 8^th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

4 birds at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2^nd, 4^th and the 8^th.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

5 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2^nd with 76 there on the 17^th and 85 on the 24^th, 4 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18^th, 12 at Spiro’s Pool on the 18^th with c150 in that area on the 27^th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

There were up to 7 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area all month.

Pacific Golden Plover    Pluvialis fulva

A 2^nd for Cyprus was discovered at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 31^st.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

Present at Mandria for most of the month with a maximum of c24 on the 8^th and at the Paphos Lighthouse Area all month with a maximum of c60 on the 5^th.

Grey Plover    Pluvialis squatarola

There were up to 2 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area all month, 1 at Mandria on the 8^th and the 26^th with a flock of Golden Plover and 1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 24^th.

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 75, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds from 1^st to 10^th, 60 at Akhna Dam on 27^th, 8 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 18^th, 30 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 18^th, 10 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 16^th, maximum of c40 at Mandria on 3^rd, maximum of c50 near Akhna Dam on 24^th, 30 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 18^th and 2 at Vrysoulles on 29^th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

From 30 to 85 frequented the Larnaca Salt Lake/Larnaca Airport Pools South area all month with just 1 at Oroklini on the 15^th.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

Up to c25 were reported until the 10^th at the Larnaca Salt Lake whilst 2 were reported from Spiro’s Pool on the 15^th.

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Phasouri Reed Beds had up to 5 during the period 8^th to the 10^th whilst Oroklini had 2 on the 13^th and 15^th with only 1 seen on the 14^th.

Jack Snipe    Lymnocryptes minimus

A single bird flushed from the small pool at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 12^th.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

A maximum of 6 were seen on the 8^th at the Phasouri Reed Beds with birds present from at least the 1^st to the 18^th, a maximum of 7 at Akhna Dam in the period 2^nd to the 30^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools between the 16^th and the 24^th, 1 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 12^th and 1 at Yermasoya Dam on the 9^th.

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

Up to 2 birds were seen at Phasouri Reed Beds during the period 1^st to 18^th.

Curlew    Numenius arquata

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds from the 1^st to the 10^th and 10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th, 3 on the 18^th with just 1 on the 21^st.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Singles at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2^nd, 4^th, 8^th and 18^th with 1 also at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18^th too.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

1 at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2^nd and 4^th with 5 there on the 3^rd and 30 on the 15^th, c10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18^th with 2 on the 21^st and c25 on the 24^th, a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 9^th and single birds seen at Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st and the 8^th.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Single birds at Zakaki Marsh and Larnaca Salt Lake on the 10^th with 2 at Oroklini on the 20^th with just 1 there on the 24^th.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

1 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 1^st, Yermasoya and Kalavasos Dams on the 7^th, 2 at Yermasoya Dam on the 9^th, 1 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 12^th and at Evretou Dam on the 18^th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

Only reported from the Paphos Lighthouse Area with a maximum of 9 seen on the 5^th.

Mediterranean Gull    Larus melanocephalus

An adult at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17^th and 4 seen on the Larnaca Sea Front on the 23^rd.

Little Gull    Larus minutus

Larnaca Salt Lake had 5 on the 2^nd with an amazing 92 on the 4^th and then 7 on the 8^th, 9 on the 18^th, 1 on the 23^rd and 15 on the 31^st, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st with 2 [one oiled] on the 18^th, 2 at Oroklini on the 18^th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18^th with 2 at Akhna Dam on the 27^th with just 1 there on the 30^th.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

Reported from Amathus [8], Ladies Mile [c200], Larnaca Area [100+], Larnaca Salt Lake [c1,000], Larnaca Sewage Works [1250], Limassol Sea Front [c300], maximum daily count at Oroklini of 240 and Zakaki Marsh [58].

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

A single bird at Zakaki Marsh on the 18^th .

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

3 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1^st, 3 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2^nd with 2 on the 4^th, 1 adult at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18^th, 21^st and 26^th and 1 at Oroklini on the 10^th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans 

Present at all usual sites, concentrations included c300 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17^th and the 21^st and 420 at the Kouris Dam on the 20^th.   

Armenian Gull    Larus armenicus     

There were 12 seen at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 10^th with c6 present there on the 26^th and the 27^th, 30 Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18^th and at the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 3 adults reported as being present from the 15^th until the 31^st plus there were also 2 adults reported from Ormidhia on the 26^th.

Sandwich Tern    Sterna sandvicensis

1 at Amathus on the 1^st, 4^th, 8^th and 2 on the 9^th, 3 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 7^th with 1 there on 9^th, 1 at Curium on the 10^th and 2 feeding off-shore near the Larnaca Desalination Plant on the 17^th with 1 there on the 24^th.

Rock Dove    Columba livia

3 at Kensington Cliffs on the 9^th and 8 at Yeroskipou on the 10^th.

Stock Dove    Columba oenas

22 down the Xeros Potamos on the 9^th.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Present from Akhna Dam in the east to the Akamas in the west, concentrations included c150 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 9^th, c600 at Mandria on the 16^th and 17^th and c200 at Evretou Dam on the 18^th. The highest count from the east was of c20 birds seen at Akhna Dam on the 17^th.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Reported from Amathus [8], Asprokremnos Dam [22], Oroklini [1], Paphos [5], Pera Orinis [3], Psimolofou [1], Strovolos [3], Xeros Potamos [4], Yermasoya Dam [2], Yeroskipou [3] and at Zakaki Marsh with a maximum of 4.

Great Spotted Cuckoo   Clamator glandarius

1^st for the year at Cape Greco with 1 bird present on the 26^th and the 30^th. 

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Singles at Ypsonas on 1^st, Oroklini on 28^th and Paphos on the same date plus Vrysoulles on the 29^th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

2 at Ayios Nikolaos all month, 1 at Oroklini from the 2^nd to the 6^th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 17^th plus 1 at Vrysoulles also on the 17^th and 2 at Pentadactylos on the 20^th.

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

Singles at Akhna Dam, Amathus, Ormidhia, Paphos Lighthouse Area and Yermasoya Dam.

Hoopoe    Upupa epops

An early bird at Coral Bay on the 20^th, most definitely the first for the year and the first, to my knowledge, of a January bird.

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

1 at Oroklini on the 10^th and c40 near the Larnaca Desalination Plant on the 18^th.

Lesser Short-toed Lark    Calandrella rufescens

1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 1^st.

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

Widespread throughout the island in numbers between 1 and 4 except for Oroklini which had a maximum daily count of 20 birds.

Woodlark    Lullula arborea  

Reported from Ayia Varvara [10 on 27^th], Akhna Dam [highest total c20 on 10^th], Akrotiri Salt Lake [1 on 18^th], Anarita Park [c11 on 24^th], Armou [highest total 18 on 1^st], Aspro Dam Pools [9 on 14^th], Ayios Nikolaos [6 on 24^th], Episkopi [highest total 12 on 3^rd], Kouklia [6 on 3^rd], Lythrodhonda [8 on 28^th], Phasouri Reed Beds [2 on 5^th], Psimolofou [5 on 1^st], Xeros Potamos [4 on 5^th], and Yermasoya Dam [3 on 9^th]. 

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

Very widespread throughout the month with large counts coming from Larnaca Sewage Works with a report of c300 all month, Mandria with a maximum of c240 on 23^rd, Paphos Lighthouse Area with a maximum of c200 on 15^th, Psimolofou with 2 flocks totalling 55 on 1^st, Spiro’s Pool with c40 on 2^nd, 4^th and the 8^th and Zakaki Marsh with c20 on 2^nd, 4^th and the 8^th.   

Crag Martin    Ptyonoprogne rupestris

12 at Yermasoya Dam on 9^th and 10^th with c20 there on 24^th and Evretou Dam with c50 on the 27^th.

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

On the 1^st and the 8^th there were 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds, early arrivals or over-winterers? There were also 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 31^st.

House Martin    Delichon urbicum

1 at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 31^st .

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

Another extremely widespread bird with reports from Akhna Dam [c15], Akrotiri Gravel Pits [c8], Amathus [6], Armou [1], Asprokremnos Dam [c80] and its Treatment Plant [8], Episkopi [10], Evretou Dam [2], Marathounda [3], Oroklini [2], Paphos Lighthouse Area [c50], Phasouri Reed Beds [c20], Psimolofou [4], Xeros Potamos [8] and Zakaki Marsh [8].

Red-throated Pipit    Anthus cervinus

There was a single bird seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1^st, 17^th and the 29^th plus another single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 1^st and at Anarita Park on the 31^st.

Water Pipit    Anthus spinoletta

There were 4 at Zakaki Marsh between the 8^th and the 10^th, 4 at Evretou Dam on the 18^th and 5 at Akhna Dam on the 27^th with c25 there on the 30^th.

Grey Wagtail    Motacilla cinerea

Single bird at Amathus on 10^th, 1 or 2 birds present at Aspro Dam Pools all month plus single birds again at Ezousa Gorge on 27^th, Nicosia River on 4^th, Platres on 9^th, Psimolofou on 1^st and the Yermasoya Dam on 1^st and 10^th.

White Wagtail    Motacilla alba

Widespread and numerous across the island, significant counts included 97 at a roost at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 9^th but with 210 there on the 16^th, a roost of c80 birds at Yeroskipou on the 9^thand a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 150 birds.

Wren    Troglodytes troglodytes

Just the one report of a single bird at Evretou Dam seen by some people participating in the Annual Waterfowl Count on the 18^th.

Robin   Erithacus rubecula

Very widespread with reports from Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amathus, Armou, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Dora, Episkopi, Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Kouklia Forest, Lythrodhonda, Marathounda, Oroklini, Panayia, Pentadactylos, Pera Orinis, Strovolos and Yermasoya Dam.

Bluethroat    Luscinia svecica

Present at Akhna Dam with 6 seen on the 27^th and a male of the white-spotted form seen frequently at Aspro Dam Pools all month.

Black Redstart    Phoenicurus ochruros

Another, very widespread species with reports from Akhna Dam, Amargeti, Amathus, Asprokremnos Dam, Bishop's Pool, Cape Greco, Dora, Episkopi, Ezousa River, Phinikas, Larnaca Sewage Works, Mandria, Marathounda, Larnaca Salt Lake, Oroklini, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Strovolos, Yermasoya Dam and at Yeroskipou.

Stonechat    Saxicola torquatus

Similar to the above species but even more frequently seen. Sites as per the previous species plus Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Evretou Dam, Kalavasos Dam, Pera Orinis, Phasouri Reed Beds, Psimolofou, Stroumbi and Zakaki Marsh. The highest total reported from site was 17 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 17^th.   

Finsch’s Wheatear    Oenanthe finschii

Reported from Anarita Park with 2 males on the 24^th and the 31^st, Asprokremnos Dam with 2 males on the 17^th and Paralimni Sewage Works with 3 males on the 17^th

Blue Rock Thrush    Monticola solitarius

A male at Cape Greco on the 2^nd and the 4^th, 1 at Pera Orinis on the 17^th and 1 at Kensington Cliffs on the 29^th.

Blackbird    Turdus merula

Akhna Dam with 5 on 27^th, Akrotiri Gravel Pits with 1 on 3^rd, Akrounda Dam with 1 on 7^th, Aspro Dam Pools with singles on 14^th and 24^th with 2 on 16^th, Athalassa with 1 heard on 18^th, Ayia Varvara with 1 on 19^th, Bishop's Pool with 1 on 18^th, Episkopi with 1 on 3^rd, Evretou Dam with 1 on 18^th, Kouklia Forest with 3 on 8^th and at Marathounda with 2 on14th.

Song Thrush    Turdus philomelos

More widespread and numerous than the previous species reported from Akhna Dam [c50 on 2 dates], Akrotiri Salt Lake [10], Amathus, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Athalassa, Bishop's Pool, Episkopi [20], Evretou Dam, Kensington Cliffs, Kouklia Forest, Marathounda, Oroklini, Pera Orinis, Phasouri Reed Beds, Psimolofou, Yermasoya Dam and Yeroskipou.

Mistle Thrush    Turdus viscivorus

1 seen at Ezousa Pools area on 10^th and 1 on Mount Olympus on 29^th.

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

Not surprisingly most records are of birds heard, being reported frequently from Akhna Dam and Aspro Dam Pools with occasional reports from Athalassa, Episkopi, Evretou Dam, many reports from Kannaviou Dam and single reports from Marathounda, Oroklini, Pentadactylos, Pera Orinis and Stroumbi.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis   

1’s and 2’s from Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amathus, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Marathounda, Larnaca Salt Lake, Pera Orinis and Yermasoya Dam with 3 from Psimolofou and Xeros Potamos with 4 being the Oroklini maximum daily count, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds from the 1^st to the 10^th and 5 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18^th.

Moustached Warbler    Acrocephalus melanopogon

There were up to 5 reported from the Aspro Dam Pools during the month with 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 8^th and 9^th, 1 at Akrounda Dam on 7^th and 5 at Akhna Dam on 27^th with only 1 seen there on the 30^th.

Spectacled Warbler    Sylvia conspicillata

1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 2^nd, up to 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 2^nd and the 21^st, 1 at Oroklini on many dates between the 5^th and the 31^st, 1 at Pera Orinis on 4^th, 1 at Spiro’s Pool on 2^nd and 1 at Xeros Potamos on the 9^th.

Sardinian Warbler    Sylvia melanocephala

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Amathus, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Marathounda [4 on 14^th], Oroklini and Panayia.

Cyprus Warbler    Sylvia melanothorax

Reported from Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Akrounda Dam, Amathus, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Evretou Dam, Kensington Cliffs, Marathounda, Pentadactylos and Yermasoya Dam [6 each day between the 1^st and the 10^th].

Blackcap    Sylvia atricapilla

Extremely widespread with reports from Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amargeti, Amathus, Anarita, Aspro Dam Pools, Episkopi, Evretou Dam [6], Kannaviou Dam, Lythrodhonda, Mandria [5], Oroklini, Paphos Town Centre, Pera Orinis [6], Phasouri Reed Beds, Psimolofou [10], Strovolos and Yermasoya Dam.

Chiffchaff    Phylloscopus collybita

Present at most sites across the island, higher counts came from Akhna Dam with c10 on 18^th, Aspro Dam Pools with c10 on 16^th and 28^th with c30 on the 27^th, c20 at Evretou Dam on 18^th and at Kouris Dam on 20^th and c15 at Mandria on 16^th.

Bearded Tit    Panurus biarmicus

A single bird near to Zakaki Marsh on the 6^th.

Coal Tit    Parus ater cypriotes

6 in Troodos on the 8^th and 2 on Mount Olympus on the 29^th.

Great Tit    Parus major aphrodite

Reported from Akhna Dam in the east to the Akamas in the west in single-figure numbers, the highest count being 8 at Pera Orinis on the 4^th.

Short-toed Treecreeper    Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae

Just 1 bird, seen in Troodos on the 4^th.

Jay    Garrulus glandarius glaszneri

1 bird heard on Mount Olympus on the 29^th.

Magpie    Pica pica

There are very few locations from where this species was not reported, higher counts being 42 at Amargeti on 27^th, c50 at Asprokremnos Dam on 17^th, c20 at Evretou Dam on 18^th and c20 at Polemi on 7^th.

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Congregates in larger flocks than the previous species, significant counts being c300 at Asprokremnos Dam on 17^th, 150 at Episkopi on 3^rd, c250 at Evretou Dam on 18^th and c100 at Petra Tou Romiou on 5^th.

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

Another very widespread species seen across the island, higher counts came from Asprokremnos Dam on 17 with c30, Evretou Dam on 18^th with c20, Phasouri Reed Beds on 1^st with c70 and Strovolos all month with an average of c200 but with 226 on the 9^th.

Starling    Sturnus vulgaris

At Phasouri Reed Beds there were 8 on 1^st, 25 on 2^nd and c100 on 29^th, 1 at Moni on 2^nd, 2 at Oroklini on 6^th, 2 or 3 at Mandria on 25^th and 50 at Lymbia on 31^st.

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

High counts included the maximum daily count at Oroklini of 200 birds, 250 at Psimolofou on 1^st and 150 there on the 2^nd.

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

Reported from more sites than the previous species but in smaller concentrations, double figures being reported from Amathus [c20], Armou [70], Asprokremnos Dam [c40], Ayia Napa [20], Evretou Dam [18], Kannaviou Dam [c30], Larnaca Sewage Works [50], Malia [55], Mandria [c60], Oroklini [30], Paphos Lighthouse Area [c40] and Yeroskipou [c20].

Chaffinch    Fringilla coelebs

Probably the most frequently reported species this month, double figure counts came from Akhna Dam with 30 on 27^th, Asprokremnos Dam with 25 on 17^th, Dora with 10 on 8^th, Episkopi with 12 on 3^rd and 20 on 14^th, Evretou Dam with c100 on 18^th, Ezousa River with c60 on 3^rd, Kannaviou Dam with c30 on 20^th, Marathounda with 30 on 6^thand 60 on 25^th, Panayia with c15 on 13^th, Paphos Sewage Works with c20 on 17^th, Phasouri Reed Beds with c50 on 1^st, Psimolofou with 10 on 2^nd and Yermasoya Dam with c20 between the 1^st and the 10^th.
