Bird Records for January 2004

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 20, there were 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds until at least the 10th, c25 at Zakaki Marsh during the same period, c50 at Larnaca Sewage Works most of the month, 10 at Akhna Dam on the 26th, 1 or 2 at Aspro Dam Pools most of the month, 1 at Athalassa on the 1st but 4 heard there on the 17th, 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 18th, 12 at the Polemedhia Dam on the 1st and finally 17 reported from Zakaki Marsh on the 18th but only 10 there on the 20th.

Great Crested Grebe    Podiceps cristatus

There was 1 at Yermasoya Dam from the 1st to the 10th, a maximum of 8 at Akhna Dam on the 30th, a maximum of 10 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 10th, 1 at Kiti Dam on the 15th, 1 at Kouris Dam on the 20th and 1 at Spiro’s Pool on both the 18th and the 25th.

Black-necked Grebe    Podiceps Nigricollis

The numbers reported from Larnaca Sewage Works varied from just 10 at the start of the month to 80 on the 27th with single birds at Oroklini on the 3rd and the 7th and at Akhna Dam on the 2nd.

Cormorant    Phalacrocorax carbo

Maximums at the various sites were 18 at Polemedhia Dam on 1st and 6th, just 1 at Yermasoya Dam until the 10th, c300 at Larnaca Sewage Works from 15th until the end of the month, 6 at Amathus on 10th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 4th, 14 at Asprokremnos Dam on 30th, 2 at Bishop's Pool on 18th, 3 at Evretou Dam on 18th, 2 at Kouris Dam on 20th and 7 in the Paphos Harbour on the 6th.

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

At Kensington Cliffs there were 2 on the 1st and 4 on the 9th whilst the only other site reporting this species was Mandria with 2 on the 26th.

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

Phasouri Reed Beds had between 1 and 9 birds present for most of the month with the maximum reported on the 18th, Aspro Dam Pools had between 1 and 3 present for most of the month too with its maximum being on the 16th. Oroklini had 1 or 2 present from the 6th for the remainder of the month whilst there was a single bird seen at Ayios Nikolaos on the 14th and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 16th.  

Little Egret    Egretta garzetta

There was a single bird at Zakaki Marsh from the 1st to the 7th, single birds again at Oroklini on the 3rd with 4 on the 5th and 1 at Athalassa on the 17th. There were 10 at Paralimni Lake on the 11th and 4 birds over flew Akhna Dam on the 26th.

Great White Egret   Egretta alba 

A single bird was present at Zakaki Marsh from the 1st to at least the 10th plus single birds also seen on Ladies Mile on the 22nd and the 29th, probably the Zakaki Marsh bird?   

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

Reported from Polemedhia Dam with 1 on both the 1st and the 6th, 3 at Oroklini all month, 1 at Yermasoya Dam from the 3rd until the 10th, 3 at Akhna Dam on the 9th, 5 at Kalavasos on the 7th, either 1 or 2 at Asprokremnos Dam from the 10th to the 30th, 2 at Evretou Dam on the 18th, up to 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 4th and the 21st whilst Zakaki Marsh had 15 on the 1st, 12 on the 3rd, 4 on the 5th, 5 on the 9th but only 1 on the 18th.   

Black Stork    Ciconia nigra

A most unusual January sighting was 1 bird at Strovolos in a river bed on the 3rd plus another/same bird? in Nicosia behind the hospital on the 13th.

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus ruber

c200 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 10th but between the 15th and by the 31st numbers had increased to between 3 and 4 thousand birds. At Akrotiri Salt Lake the numbers on the 18th during the Waterfowl Count were reported as 6,530 whilst the numbers on the 20th had droped to 5,700 birds.

White-fronted Goose    Anser albifrons

The flock present at Larnaca Sewage Works was reported as being just 2 strong on the 15th but 40 strong on the 21st, showing that they move around the area and are not always on view from the hide. The final report was of 30 birds on the 25th. There was also a single bird present at Akhna Dam on the 27th.=

Lesser White-fronted Goose           Anser erythropus

Just 2 of the original 3 present at Akhna Dam on the 10th and then, between this date and the 27th, another went missing [poached?] as just the 1 was present on the 27th.

Greylag Goose    Anser anser

2 at Akhna Dam on the 26th and also saw another at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 29th.

Ruddy Shelduck    Tadorna ferruginea

There is only the one report of a single bird at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 1st but from Birdline there was a report of 90+ there during the month.

The numbers at Akrotiri Salt Lake increased from c150 on the 1st to 500+ on 9th but unfortunately only 150 were seen there during the Waterfowl Count on the 18th and subsequently on the 20th. There were c500 reported from Larnaca Salt Lake on the 30th, c60 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th and 2 at Oroklini on the 9th.

Wigeon    Anas penelope

There were up to 32 at the Asprokremnos Dam until at least the 17th, 21 at Evretou Dam on the 18th, a maximum of 60 at Larnaca Sewage Works during the month, just 2 at Oroklini on the 26th and the 27th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 6th, 23 at Spiro’s Pool on the 8th and a maximum of 12 at Zakaki Marsh on the 3rd.

Gadwall    Anas strepera

2 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th, up to 50 at Larnaca Sewage Works during the month and 15 at Zakaki Marsh on the 18th.

Teal    Anas crecca

Approximately a thousand were seen at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th, a single female at Aspro Dam Pools from the 4th to the 17th, 105 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17th, 11 at Bishop's Pool on the 18th, 12 at Kalavasos Dam on the 7th, up to 500 at Larnaca Sewage Works and 220 at Phasouri Reed Beds during the month, 10 at Yermasoya Dam between the 1st and the 10th, 8 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1st but only a maximum of 5 there between the 3rd and the 10th and finally Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 250 birds.

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

Akhna Dam had 12 on 2nd, Akrotiri Salt Lake a maximum of 500 on 18th, Aspro Dam Pools 1 on 17th, Asprokremnos Dam 64 on 17th, Athalassa 2 on 1st, Evretou Dam 24 on 18th, Kouris Dam 4 on 20th, Larnaca Airport Pools North 7 on 8th, Larnaca Sewage Works up to 300 during month, Phasouri Reed Beds c20 on 1st, Spiro’s Pool 8 on 4th, Yermasoya Dam a maximum of 57 between the 1st and the 10th, Zakaki Marsh 4 on 6th and finally Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 14 birds.

Pintail    Anas acuta

120 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20th but unfortunately only 5 were reported on 18th during the Waterfowl Count. Larnaca Airport Pools North had 3 on 18th, Larnaca Salt Lake 63 on 18th, Larnaca Sewage Works up to 50 during the month, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 3rd and 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 8th.

Shoveler    Anas clypeata

300 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th with 170 on the 20th, up to 1,500 all month at Larnaca Sewage Works, 1 at Oroklini on the 27th and a maximum at Phasouri Reed Beds of 39 on the 18th.

Red-crested Pochard    Netta rufina

Evretou Dam on the 18th there was both a male and female present but only single males at Ladies Mile on the 29th and at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 10th and the 24th.

Pochard    Aythya ferina

There were 7 at Yermasoya Dam from the 1st until the 10th, 30 at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th, 4 on Bishop's Pool on the same date and also 5 at Evretou Dam on the 18th, Larnaca Sewage Works had a maximum during the month of 150 on the 21st whilst there was just a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 2nd.

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There were 2 birds reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 1st but only a single bird on the 9th and the 10th. There was also a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 10th with a single bird at Oroklini on most dates from the 18th.

Tufted Duck    Aythya fuligula

The maximum at Larnaca Sewage Works was 8 on the 15th with 5 on Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on both the 2nd and the 9th but with 3 reported from this location on the 18th during the Waterfowl Count.

White-headed Duck    Oxyura leucocephala

A single first winter male was reported from Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18th and from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21st, 25th and the 31st, all presumably relating to the same bird?

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

There were 6 reported from Kensington Cliffs on the 1st, 9 on the 2nd [with 2 carrying nesting material] and 9 on the 29th with 1 in the Dhiarizos River Valley on the 4th and 2 at Ayios Nikolaos [Paphos] on the 28th.

Marsh Harrier    Circus aeruginosus

There was a maximum of 4, including 1 adult male, at Phasouri Reed Beds between the 1st and 10th with lesser numbers until the end of the month there, a female at Akhna Dam seen on the 9th and the 27th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th with 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the same date, 1 at Oroklini on most dates from the 14th, a maximum of 4 seen at Zakaki Marsh on the 20th and 2 birds at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 31st.

Hen Harrier    Circus cyaneus

All records this month refer to lone birds at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 1st, Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 8th [male], Akhna Dam on 17th, on 18th at Evretou Dam, Larnaca Desalination Plant and Larnaca Salt Lake, Mandria on 19th and Marathounda on 26th.

Pallid Harrier    Circus macrourus

There was a wandering/wintering sub-adult male seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17th.

Sparrowhawk    Accipiter nisus

All reports refer to lone birds at Aspro Dam Pools on 4th, Mandria on 4th, Pera Orinis on 4th, Marathounda on 6th, Yermasoya Dam on 9th and Akhna Dam on 10th and the 27th.

Common Buzzard    Buteo buteo   

B.b.buteo

All reports are of single birds at Phasouri Reed Beds between 1st and 10th, Kensington Cliffs on 2nd, Cape Greco on 11th, Akhna Dam on 17th and on the 18th at Larnaca Salt Lake and at Phasouri Reed Beds. 

Long-legged Buzzard    Buteo rufinus

1 bird at Chrysochou on the 27th.

Bonelli’s Eagle    Hieraaetus fasciatus

2 adult birds seen at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17th, 1 at Marathounda on the 25th and 1 at Chrysochou on the 27th.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

Reported from Strovolos, Oroklini, Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amargeti, Asprokremnos Dam [3 on 17th], Episkopi [3 on 14th], Evretou Dam [3 on 18th], Larnaca Sewage Works, Marathounda [3 on a daily basis], Paphos Lighthouse Area, Pentadactylos, Phasouri Reed Beds [4 on 18th], Psimolofou and Yeroskipou [3 on 24th].

Merlin    Falco columbarius

1 at Mandria on the 2nd and the 17th plus 1 at Akhna Bridge on the 9th.

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

All sightings refer to single birds at the Phasouri Reed Beds on 1st, Dhiarizos River Valley on 4th, Aspro Dam Pools on 17th, Evretou Dam on 18th, Pentadactylos on 20th and Episkopi on the 27th. 

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

Reported from all locations across the island with higher counts being seen at Oroklini with 30 all month, 17 at Amathus between the 1st and the 10th and 10 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17th.

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

Oroklini had up to 2 most of the month, Aspro Dam Pools had 3on 16th and 2 on 17th, Akhna Dam had 3 on 30th and Ayios Nikolaos had 1 also on the 30th.

Water Rail    Rallus aquaticus

1 was present at the Aspro Dam Pools all month with 3 being seen there on the 27th and 2 on the 28th.

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

Present at most wetlands with higher counts coming from Athalassa with 26 on the 17th and 14 on the 18th, Bishop's Pool with 11 on 18th and an Oroklini maximum daily count of 6 birds.

Coot    Fulica atra

Present at most wetlands across the island with higher counts at Akhna Dam with c300 on 27th, Larnaca Sewage Works with c250 on 21st, Phasouri Reed Beds with c200 on 18th and Oroklini with a maximum daily count of c100 birds. All other sites were either double or single figures and included Yermasoya Dam Zakaki Marsh, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Athalassa, Bishop's Pool, Evretou Dam and Polemedhia Dam.

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

2 to 10 were heard most nights at Ayios Nikolaos, 8 down the Xeros Potamos on the 5th and the 8th, 5 at Mandria on the 17th with 6 there on the 24th and 14 seen at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18th.

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

1 bird at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 8th.

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

4 birds at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2nd, 4th and the 8th.

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

5 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2nd with 76 there on the 17th and 85 on the 24th, 4 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th, 12 at Spiro’s Pool on the 18th with c150 in that area on the 27th.

Greater Sand Plover    Charadrius leschenaultii

There were up to 7 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area all month.

Pacific Golden Plover    Pluvialis fulva

A 2nd for Cyprus was discovered at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 31st.

Golden Plover    Pluvialis apricaria

Present at Mandria for most of the month with a maximum of c24 on the 8th and at the Paphos Lighthouse Area all month with a maximum of c60 on the 5th.

Grey Plover    Pluvialis squatarola

There were up to 2 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area all month, 1 at Mandria on the 8th and the 26th with a flock of Golden Plover and 1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 24th.

Lapwing    Vanellus vanellus

Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 75, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds from 1st to 10th, 60 at Akhna Dam on 27th, 8 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 18th, 30 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 18th, 10 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 16th, maximum of c40 at Mandria on 3rd, maximum of c50 near Akhna Dam on 24th, 30 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 18th and 2 at Vrysoulles on 29th.

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

From 30 to 85 frequented the Larnaca Salt Lake/Larnaca Airport Pools South area all month with just 1 at Oroklini on the 15th.

Dunlin    Calidris alpina

Up to c25 were reported until the 10th at the Larnaca Salt Lake whilst 2 were reported from Spiro’s Pool on the 15th.

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Phasouri Reed Beds had up to 5 during the period 8th to the 10th whilst Oroklini had 2 on the 13th and 15th with only 1 seen on the 14th.

Jack Snipe    Lymnocryptes minimus

A single bird flushed from the small pool at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 12th.

Snipe    Gallinago gallinago

A maximum of 6 were seen on the 8th at the Phasouri Reed Beds with birds present from at least the 1st to the 18th, a maximum of 7 at Akhna Dam in the period 2nd to the 30th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools between the 16th and the 24th, 1 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 12th and 1 at Yermasoya Dam on the 9th.

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

Up to 2 birds were seen at Phasouri Reed Beds during the period 1st to 18th.

Curlew    Numenius arquata

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds from the 1st to the 10th and 10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th, 3 on the 18th with just 1 on the 21st.

Spotted Redshank    Tringa erythropus

Singles at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2nd, 4th, 8th and 18th with 1 also at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18th too.

Redshank    Tringa totanus

1 at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2nd and 4th with 5 there on the 3rd and 30 on the 15th, c10 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18th with 2 on the 21st and c25 on the 24th, a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 9th and single birds seen at Zakaki Marsh on the 1st and the 8th.

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Single birds at Zakaki Marsh and Larnaca Salt Lake on the 10th with 2 at Oroklini on the 20th with just 1 there on the 24th.

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

1 at the Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 1st, Yermasoya and Kalavasos Dams on the 7th, 2 at Yermasoya Dam on the 9th, 1 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 12th and at Evretou Dam on the 18th.

Turnstone    Arenaria interpres

Only reported from the Paphos Lighthouse Area with a maximum of 9 seen on the 5th.

Mediterranean Gull    Larus melanocephalus

An adult at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17th and 4 seen on the Larnaca Sea Front on the 23rd.

Little Gull    Larus minutus

Larnaca Salt Lake had 5 on the 2nd with an amazing 92 on the 4th and then 7 on the 8th, 9 on the 18th, 1 on the 23rd and 15 on the 31st, 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1st with 2 [one oiled] on the 18th, 2 at Oroklini on the 18th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th with 2 at Akhna Dam on the 27th with just 1 there on the 30th.

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

Reported from Amathus [8], Ladies Mile [c200], Larnaca Area [100+], Larnaca Salt Lake [c1,000], Larnaca Sewage Works [1250], Limassol Sea Front [c300], maximum daily count at Oroklini of 240 and Zakaki Marsh [58].

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

A single bird at Zakaki Marsh on the 18th .

Lesser Black-backed Gull    Larus fuscus   

L.f.fuscus

3 at Zakaki Marsh on the 1st, 3 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 2nd with 2 on the 4th, 1 adult at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18th, 21st and 26th and 1 at Oroklini on the 10th.

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans 

Present at all usual sites, concentrations included c300 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 17th and the 21st and 420 at the Kouris Dam on the 20th.   

Armenian Gull    Larus armenicus     

There were 12 seen at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 10th with c6 present there on the 26th and the 27th, 30 Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18th and at the Larnaca Sewage Works there were 3 adults reported as being present from the 15th until the 31st plus there were also 2 adults reported from Ormidhia on the 26th.

Sandwich Tern    Sterna sandvicensis

1 at Amathus on the 1st, 4th, 8th and 2 on the 9th, 3 at Paphos Lighthouse Area on the 7th with 1 there on 9th, 1 at Curium on the 10th and 2 feeding off-shore near the Larnaca Desalination Plant on the 17th with 1 there on the 24th.

Rock Dove    Columba livia

3 at Kensington Cliffs on the 9th and 8 at Yeroskipou on the 10th.

Stock Dove    Columba oenas

22 down the Xeros Potamos on the 9th.

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

Present from Akhna Dam in the east to the Akamas in the west, concentrations included c150 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 9th, c600 at Mandria on the 16th and 17th and c200 at Evretou Dam on the 18th. The highest count from the east was of c20 birds seen at Akhna Dam on the 17th.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

Reported from Amathus [8], Asprokremnos Dam [22], Oroklini [1], Paphos [5], Pera Orinis [3], Psimolofou [1], Strovolos [3], Xeros Potamos [4], Yermasoya Dam [2], Yeroskipou [3] and at Zakaki Marsh with a maximum of 4.

Great Spotted Cuckoo   Clamator glandarius

1st for the year at Cape Greco with 1 bird present on the 26th and the 30th. 

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

Singles at Ypsonas on 1st, Oroklini on 28th and Paphos on the same date plus Vrysoulles on the 29th.

Little Owl    Athene noctua

2 at Ayios Nikolaos all month, 1 at Oroklini from the 2nd to the 6th, 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 17th plus 1 at Vrysoulles also on the 17th and 2 at Pentadactylos on the 20th.

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

Singles at Akhna Dam, Amathus, Ormidhia, Paphos Lighthouse Area and Yermasoya Dam.

Hoopoe    Upupa epops

An early bird at Coral Bay on the 20th, most definitely the first for the year and the first, to my knowledge, of a January bird.

Calandra Lark    Melanocorypha calandra

1 at Oroklini on the 10th and c40 near the Larnaca Desalination Plant on the 18th.

Lesser Short-toed Lark    Calandrella rufescens

1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 1st.

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

Widespread throughout the island in numbers between 1 and 4 except for Oroklini which had a maximum daily count of 20 birds.

Woodlark    Lullula arborea  

Reported from Ayia Varvara [10 on 27th], Akhna Dam [highest total c20 on 10th], Akrotiri Salt Lake [1 on 18th], Anarita Park [c11 on 24th], Armou [highest total 18 on 1st], Aspro Dam Pools [9 on 14th], Ayios Nikolaos [6 on 24th], Episkopi [highest total 12 on 3rd], Kouklia [6 on 3rd], Lythrodhonda [8 on 28th], Phasouri Reed Beds [2 on 5th], Psimolofou [5 on 1st], Xeros Potamos [4 on 5th], and Yermasoya Dam [3 on 9th]. 

Skylark    Alauda arvensis

Very widespread throughout the month with large counts coming from Larnaca Sewage Works with a report of c300 all month, Mandria with a maximum of c240 on 23rd, Paphos Lighthouse Area with a maximum of c200 on 15th, Psimolofou with 2 flocks totalling 55 on 1st, Spiro’s Pool with c40 on 2nd, 4th and the 8th and Zakaki Marsh with c20 on 2nd, 4th and the 8th.   

Crag Martin    Ptyonoprogne rupestris

12 at Yermasoya Dam on 9th and 10th with c20 there on 24th and Evretou Dam with c50 on the 27th.

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

On the 1st and the 8th there were 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds, early arrivals or over-winterers? There were also 2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 31st.

House Martin    Delichon urbicum

1 at the Larnaca Salt Lake on the 31st .

Meadow Pipit    Anthus pratensis

Another extremely widespread bird with reports from Akhna Dam [c15], Akrotiri Gravel Pits [c8], Amathus [6], Armou [1], Asprokremnos Dam [c80] and its Treatment Plant [8], Episkopi [10], Evretou Dam [2], Marathounda [3], Oroklini [2], Paphos Lighthouse Area [c50], Phasouri Reed Beds [c20], Psimolofou [4], Xeros Potamos [8] and Zakaki Marsh [8].

Red-throated Pipit    Anthus cervinus

There was a single bird seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st, 17th and the 29th plus another single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 1st and at Anarita Park on the 31st.

Water Pipit    Anthus spinoletta

There were 4 at Zakaki Marsh between the 8th and the 10th, 4 at Evretou Dam on the 18th and 5 at Akhna Dam on the 27th with c25 there on the 30th.

Single bird at Amathus on 10th, 1 or 2 birds present at Aspro Dam Pools all month plus single birds again at Ezousa Gorge on 27th, Nicosia River on 4th, Platres on 9th, Psimolofou on 1st and the Yermasoya Dam on 1st and 10th.

White Wagtail    Motacilla alba

Widespread and numerous across the island, significant counts included 97 at a roost at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 9th but with 210 there on the 16th, a roost of c80 birds at Yeroskipou on the 9thand a maximum daily count at Oroklini of 150 birds.

Wren    Troglodytes troglodytes

Just the one report of a single bird at Evretou Dam seen by some people participating in the Annual Waterfowl Count on the 18th.

Robin   Erithacus rubecula

Very widespread with reports from Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amathus, Armou, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Dora, Episkopi, Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Kouklia Forest, Lythrodhonda, Marathounda, Oroklini, Panayia, Pentadactylos, Pera Orinis, Strovolos and Yermasoya Dam.

Bluethroat    Luscinia svecica

Present at Akhna Dam with 6 seen on the 27th and a male of the white-spotted form seen frequently at Aspro Dam Pools all month.

Black Redstart    Phoenicurus ochruros

Another, very widespread species with reports from Akhna Dam, Amargeti, Amathus, Asprokremnos Dam, Bishop's Pool, Cape Greco, Dora, Episkopi, Ezousa River, Phinikas, Larnaca Sewage Works, Mandria, Marathounda, Larnaca Salt Lake, Oroklini, Paphos Lighthouse Area, Strovolos, Yermasoya Dam and at Yeroskipou.

Stonechat    Saxicola torquatus

Similar to the above species but even more frequently seen. Sites as per the previous species plus Aspro Dam Pools, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Evretou Dam, Kalavasos Dam, Pera Orinis, Phasouri Reed Beds, Psimolofou, Stroumbi and Zakaki Marsh. The highest total reported from site was 17 at the Asprokremnos Dam on the 17th.   

Finsch’s Wheatear    Oenanthe finschii

Reported from Anarita Park with 2 males on the 24th and the 31st, Asprokremnos Dam with 2 males on the 17th and Paralimni Sewage Works with 3 males on the 17th

Blue Rock Thrush    Monticola solitarius

A male at Cape Greco on the 2nd and the 4th, 1 at Pera Orinis on the 17th and 1 at Kensington Cliffs on the 29th.

Blackbird    Turdus merula

Akhna Dam with 5 on 27th, Akrotiri Gravel Pits with 1 on 3rd, Akrounda Dam with 1 on 7th, Aspro Dam Pools with singles on 14th and 24th with 2 on 16th, Athalassa with 1 heard on 18th, Ayia Varvara with 1 on 19th, Bishop's Pool with 1 on 18th, Episkopi with 1 on 3rd, Evretou Dam with 1 on 18th, Kouklia Forest with 3 on 8th and at Marathounda with 2 on14th.

Song Thrush    Turdus philomelos

More widespread and numerous than the previous species reported from Akhna Dam [c50 on 2 dates], Akrotiri Salt Lake [10], Amathus, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Athalassa, Bishop's Pool, Episkopi [20], Evretou Dam, Kensington Cliffs, Kouklia Forest, Marathounda, Oroklini, Pera Orinis, Phasouri Reed Beds, Psimolofou, Yermasoya Dam and Yeroskipou.

Mistle Thrush    Turdus viscivorus

1 seen at Ezousa Pools area on 10th and 1 on Mount Olympus on 29th.

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

Not surprisingly most records are of birds heard, being reported frequently from Akhna Dam and Aspro Dam Pools with occasional reports from Athalassa, Episkopi, Evretou Dam, many reports from Kannaviou Dam and single reports from Marathounda, Oroklini, Pentadactylos, Pera Orinis and Stroumbi.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis   

1’s and 2’s from Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amathus, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Marathounda, Larnaca Salt Lake, Pera Orinis and Yermasoya Dam with 3 from Psimolofou and Xeros Potamos with 4 being the Oroklini maximum daily count, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds from the 1st to the 10th and 5 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 18th.

Moustached Warbler    Acrocephalus melanopogon

There were up to 5 reported from the Aspro Dam Pools during the month with 1 at Zakaki Marsh on the 8th and 9th, 1 at Akrounda Dam on 7th and 5 at Akhna Dam on 27th with only 1 seen there on the 30th.

Spectacled Warbler    Sylvia conspicillata

1 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 2nd, up to 4 at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 2nd and the 21st, 1 at Oroklini on many dates between the 5th and the 31st, 1 at Pera Orinis on 4th, 1 at Spiro’s Pool on 2nd and 1 at Xeros Potamos on the 9th.

Sardinian Warbler    Sylvia melanocephala

Reported from Akrotiri Salt Lake, Amathus, Ayios Dhimitrianos, Evretou Dam, Ezousa River, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Marathounda [4 on 14th], Oroklini and Panayia.

Cyprus Warbler    Sylvia melanothorax

Reported from Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Akrounda Dam, Amathus, Aspro Dam Pools, Asprokremnos Dam, Evretou Dam, Kensington Cliffs, Marathounda, Pentadactylos and Yermasoya Dam [6 each day between the 1st and the 10th].

Blackcap    Sylvia atricapilla

Extremely widespread with reports from Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Amargeti, Amathus, Anarita, Aspro Dam Pools, Episkopi, Evretou Dam [6], Kannaviou Dam, Lythrodhonda, Mandria [5], Oroklini, Paphos Town Centre, Pera Orinis [6], Phasouri Reed Beds, Psimolofou [10], Strovolos and Yermasoya Dam.

Chiffchaff    Phylloscopus collybita

Present at most sites across the island, higher counts came from Akhna Dam with c10 on 18th, Aspro Dam Pools with c10 on 16th and 28th with c30 on the 27th, c20 at Evretou Dam on 18th and at Kouris Dam on 20th and c15 at Mandria on 16th.

Bearded Tit    Panurus biarmicus

A single bird near to Zakaki Marsh on the 6th.

Coal Tit    Parus ater cypriotes

6 in Troodos on the 8th and 2 on Mount Olympus on the 29th.

Great Tit    Parus major aphrodite

Reported from Akhna Dam in the east to the Akamas in the west in single-figure numbers, the highest count being 8 at Pera Orinis on the 4th.

Short-toed Treecreeper    Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae

Just 1 bird, seen in Troodos on the 4th.

Jay    Garrulus glandarius glaszneri

1 bird heard on Mount Olympus on the 29th.

Magpie    Pica pica

There are very few locations from where this species was not reported, higher counts being 42 at Amargeti on 27th, c50 at Asprokremnos Dam on 17th, c20 at Evretou Dam on 18th and c20 at Polemi on 7th.

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Congregates in larger flocks than the previous species, significant counts being c300 at Asprokremnos Dam on 17th, 150 at Episkopi on 3rd, c250 at Evretou Dam on 18th and c100 at Petra Tou Romiou on 5th.

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

Another very widespread species seen across the island, higher counts came from Asprokremnos Dam on 17 with c30, Evretou Dam on 18th with c20, Phasouri Reed Beds on 1st with c70 and Strovolos all month with an average of c200 but with 226 on the 9th.

Starling    Sturnus vulgaris

At Phasouri Reed Beds there were 8 on 1st, 25 on 2nd and c100 on 29th, 1 at Moni on 2nd, 2 at Oroklini on 6th, 2 or 3 at Mandria on 25th and 50 at Lymbia on 31st.

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

High counts included the maximum daily count at Oroklini of 200 birds, 250 at Psimolofou on 1st and 150 there on the 2nd.

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

Reported from more sites than the previous species but in smaller concentrations, double figures being reported from Amathus [c20], Armou [70], Asprokremnos Dam [c40], Ayia Napa [20], Evretou Dam [18], Kannaviou Dam [c30], Larnaca Sewage Works [50], Malia [55], Mandria [c60], Oroklini [30], Paphos Lighthouse Area [c40] and Yeroskipou [c20].

Chaffinch    Fringilla coelebs

Probably the most frequently reported species this month, double figure counts came from Akhna Dam with 30 on 27th, Asprokremnos Dam with 25 on 17th, Dora with 10 on 8th, Episkopi with 12 on 3rd and 20 on 14th, Evretou Dam with c100 on 18th, Ezousa River with c60 on 3rd, Kannaviou Dam with c30 on 20th, Marathounda with 30 on 6thand 60 on 25th, Panayia with c15 on 13th, Paphos Sewage Works with c20 on 17th, Phasouri Reed Beds with c50 on 1st, Psimolofou with 10 on 2nd and Yermasoya Dam with c20 between the 1st and the 10th.
