Bird News Bird Records for January 2004 [The
following list contains records that have not been corrected or
corroborated] Little
Grebe
Tachybaptus ruficollis Oroklini
had a maximum daily count of 20, there were 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds until
at least the 10th, c25 at Zakaki Marsh during the same period,
c50 at Larnaca Sewage Works most of the month, 10 at Akhna Dam on the 26th,
1 or 2 at Aspro Dam Pools most of the month, 1 at Athalassa on the 1st
but 4 heard there on the 17th, 8 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the
18th, 12 at the Polemedhia Dam on the 1st and
finally 17 reported from Zakaki Marsh on the 18th but only 10
there on the 20th. Great

Podiceps cristatus There
was 1 at Yermasoya Dam from the 1st to the 10th, a
maximum of 8 at Akhna Dam on the 30th, a maximum of 10 at
Asprokremnos Dam on the 10th, 1 at Kiti Dam on the 15th,
1 at Kouris Dam on the 20th and 1 at Spiro’s Pool on both the
18th and the 25th. Black-necked

Podiceps Nigricollis The
numbers reported from Larnaca Sewage Works varied from just 10 at the
start of the month to 80 on the 27th with single birds at
Oroklini on the 3rd and the 7th and at Akhna Dam on

at the various sites were 18 at Polemedhia Dam on 1st and 6th,
just 1 at Yermasoya Dam until the 10th, c300 at Larnaca Sewage
Works from 15th until the end of the month, 6 at Amathus on 10th,
1 at Aspro Dam Pools on 4th, 14 at Asprokremnos Dam on 30th,
2 at Bishop's Pool on 18th, 3 at Evretou Dam on 18th,
2 at Kouris Dam on 20th and 7 in the Paphos Harbour on the 6th. Shag

Kensington Cliffs there were 2 on the 1st and 4 on the 9th
whilst the only other site reporting this species was Mandria with 2 on
the 26th. Cattle

Reed Beds had between 1 and 9 birds present for most of the month with the
maximum reported on the 18th, Aspro Dam Pools had between 1 and
3 present for most of the month too with its maximum being on the 16th.
Oroklini had 1 or 2 present from the 6th for the remainder of
the month whilst there was a single bird seen at Ayios Nikolaos on the 14th
and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 16th. Little

Egretta garzetta There
was a single bird at Zakaki Marsh from the 1st to the 7th,
single birds again at Oroklini on the 3rd with 4 on the 5th
and 1 at Athalassa on the 17th. There were 10 at Paralimni Lake
on the 11th and 4 birds over flew Akhna Dam on the 26th. Great

single bird was present at Zakaki Marsh from the 1st to at
least the 10th plus single Grey

from Polemedhia Dam with 1 on both the 1st and the 6th,
3 at Oroklini all month, 1 at Yermasoya Dam from the 3rd until
the 10th, 3 at Akhna Dam on the 9th, 5 at Kalavasos
on the 7th, either 1 or 2 at Asprokremnos Dam from the 10th
to the 30th, 2 at Evretou Dam on the 18th, up to 3
at Larnaca Sewage Works between the 4th and the 21st
whilst Zakaki Marsh had 15 on the 1st, 12 on the 3rd,
4 on the 5th, 5 on the 9th but only 1 on the 18th.

Ciconia nigra A
most unusual January sighting was 1 bird at Strovolos in a river bed on
the 3rd plus another/same bird? in Nicosia behind the hospital
on the 13th. Greater
Flamingo Phoenicopterus
ruber c200
at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 10th but between the 15th
and by the 31st numbers had increased to between 3 and 4
thousand birds. At Akrotiri Salt Lake the numbers on the 18th
during the Waterfowl Count were reported as 6,530 whilst the numbers on
the 20th had droped to 5,700 birds. White-fronted

Anser albifrons The
flock present at Larnaca Sewage Works was reported as being just 2 strong
on the 15th but 40 strong on the 21st, showing that
they move around the area and are not always on view from the hide. The
final report was of 30 birds on the 25th. There was also a
single bird present at Akhna Dam on the 27th.=

between this date and the 27th, another went missing [poached?]
as just the 1 was present on the 27th.

is only the one report of a single bird at Larnaca Salt Lake on the 1st
but from Birdline there was a report of 90+ there during the month. Shelduck

numbers at Akrotiri Salt Lake increased from c150 on the 1st to
500+ on 9th but unfortunately only 150 were seen there during
the Waterfowl Count on the 18th and subsequently on the 20th.
There were c500 reported from Larnaca Salt Lake on the 30th,
c60 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th and 2 at Oroklini on
the 9th. Wigeon

were up to 32 at the Asprokremnos Dam until at least the 17th,
21 at Evretou Dam on the 18th, a maximum of 60 at Larnaca
Sewage Works during the month, just 2 at Oroklini on the 26th
and the 27th, 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 6th, 23
at Spiro’s Pool on the 8th and a maximum of 12 at Zakaki
Marsh on the 3rd. Gadwall

at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th, up to 50 at Larnaca Sewage
Works during the month and 15 at Zakaki Marsh on the 18th. Teal

a thousand were seen at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th, a
single female at Aspro Dam Pools from the 4th to the 17th,
105 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17th, 11 at Bishop's Pool on the
18th, 12 at Kalavasos Dam on the 7th, up to 500 at
Larnaca Sewage Works and 220 at Phasouri Reed Beds during the month, 10 at
Yermasoya Dam between the 1st and the 10th, 8 at
Zakaki Marsh on the 1st but only a maximum of 5 there between
the 3rd and the 10th and finally Oroklini had a
maximum daily count of 250 birds. Mallard

Dam had 12 on 2nd, Akrotiri Salt Lake a maximum of 500 on 18th,
Aspro Dam Pools 1 on 17th, Asprokremnos Dam 64 on 17th,
Athalassa 2 on 1st, Evretou Dam 24 on 18th, Kouris
Dam 4 on 20th, Larnaca Airport Pools North 7 on 8th,
Larnaca Sewage Works up to 300 during month, Phasouri Reed Beds c20 on 1st,
Spiro’s Pool 8 on 4th, Yermasoya Dam a maximum of 57 between
the 1st and the 10th, Zakaki Marsh 4 on 6th
and finally Oroklini had a maximum daily count of 14 birds. Pintail

at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20th but unfortunately only 5 were
reported on 18th during the Waterfowl Count. Larnaca Airport
Pools North had 3 on 18th, Larnaca Salt Lake 63 on 18th,
Larnaca Sewage Works up to 50 during the month, 1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on
the 3rd and 2 at Zakaki Marsh on the 8th. Shoveler

at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th with 170 on the 20th,
up to 1,500 all month at Larnaca Sewage Works, 1 at Oroklini on the 27th
and a maximum at Phasouri Reed Beds of 39 on the 18th. Red-crested

Dam on the 18th there was both a male and female present but
only single males at Ladies Mile on the 29th and at Larnaca
Sewage Works between the 10th and the 24th. Pochard

were 7 at Yermasoya Dam from the 1st until the 10th,
30 at the Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th, 4 on Bishop's Pool on
the same date and also 5 at Evretou Dam on the 18th, Larnaca
Sewage Works had a maximum during the month of 150 on the 21st
whilst there was just a single bird at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 2nd. Ferruginous

were 2 birds reported from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 1st but
only a single bird on the 9th and the 10th. There
was also a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 10th with
a single bird at Oroklini on most dates from the 18th. Tufted

maximum at Larnaca Sewage Works was 8 on the 15th with 5 on
Larnaca Salt Lake on the 18th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on both
the 2nd and the 9th but with 3 reported from this

and from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21st, 25th and

[with 2 carrying nesting material] and 9 on the 29th with 1 in
the Dhiarizos River Valley on the 4th and 2 at Ayios Nikolaos [Paphos]

was a maximum of 4, including 1 adult male, at Phasouri Reed Beds between
the 1st and 10th with lesser numbers until the end
of the month there, a female at Akhna Dam seen on the 9th and
the 27th, 1 at Akrotiri Salt Lake on the 18th with 2
at Larnaca Salt Lake on the same date, 1 at Oroklini on most dates from
the 14th, a maximum of 4 seen at Zakaki Marsh on the 20th
and 2 birds at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 31st. Hen

records this month refer to lone birds at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 1st,
Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 8th [male], Akhna Dam on 17th,
on 18th at Evretou Dam, Larnaca Desalination Plant and Larnaca
Salt Lake, Mandria on 19th and Marathounda on 26th. Pallid

was a wandering/wintering sub-adult male seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on

from all locations across the island with higher counts being seen at
Oroklini with 30 all month, 17 at Amathus between the 1st and
the 10th and 10 at Asprokremnos Dam on the 17th. Black

had up to 2 most of the month, Aspro Dam Pools had 3on 16th and
2 on 17th, Akhna Dam had 3 on 30th and Ayios
Nikolaos had 1 also on the 30th. Water

was present at the Aspro Dam Pools all month with 3 being seen there on
the 27th and 2 on the 28th. Moorhen

and an Oroklini maximum daily count of 6 birds. Coot

c300 on 27th, Larnaca Sewage Works with c250 on 21st,
Phasouri Reed Beds with c200 on 18th and Oroklini with a
maximum daily count of c100 birds. All other sites were either double or
single figures and included Yermasoya Dam Zakaki Marsh, Aspro Dam Pools,
Asprokremnos Dam, Athalassa, Bishop's Pool, Evretou Dam and Polemedhia

Yermasoya Dam [3 on 9th].

Spiro’s Pool with c40 on 2nd, 4th and the 8th
and Zakaki Marsh with c20 on 2nd, 4th and the 8th.

was a single bird seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 1st,
17th and the 29th plus another single bird at
