Good numbers reported: Akhna Dam: c180 on 2 Nov, 145 on 3 Nov. Fresh Water Lake South: c.130 on 2 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: c80 on 2 Nov,  c300 on 4 Nov. Bishop's Pool: c25 on 5 Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: c30 on 5 Nov. Athalassa: 12 on 7 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: c15 on 5-15 Nov. Less than 10 reported other sites.

Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus 

An early winter visitor was at Akhna Dam: one 12-30 Nov.

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis 

Only at Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 10 from 2- 20 Nov, 19 on 28 Nov.

Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo 

Reported all month, usually less than five together. Cape Drepanum: c.40 flying along coast 5 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: 39 on 7 Nov, 23 on 8 Nov, 28 on 20 Nov. Akhna Dam: 34 on 20 Nov. Other regular sites include Asprokremnos Dam and Paphos harbour.

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis 

Less than five together, Kensington Cliffs, Petra tou Romiou and Mandria rocks.

White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus 

One immature was at Zakaki Marsh 5-21 Nov.

Bittern Botaurus stellaris 

Phasouri Reed Beds: one 18 Nov, was a good discovery.

Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax 

Salamis, Famagusta: four, being mobbed by Hooded Crows 2 Nov. Athalassa: one 14 Nov, the only reports.

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis  

Fresh Water Lake South: six 2 Nov . Phasouri Reed Beds: two 18 Nov, the only reports.

Little Egret Egretta garzetta 

Akhna Dam: seven 20 Nov, otherwise up to three all month. Fresh Water Lake South: c.30 on 2 Nov. Athalassa: 17 on 3 Nov, 12 on 17 Nov, otherwise up to eight all month. Phasouri Reed Beds: 27on 5 Nov, six 18 Nov, 14 on 23 Nov. Ones and twos most visits Phinikas, Aspro Dam.

Great White Egret Egretta alba 

All reports listed: Fresh Water Lake North: one 2 Nov. Athalassa: up to four 3-28 Nov, with six 14 Nov and seven 17 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 4 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: 15 on 5 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: four 5 Nov, one 18 Nov. Akhna Dam: two 15 & 20 Nov.

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea 

Of 30 reports received, the following are noteworthy: Akrotiri Salt Lake: c20 on 5 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: 50 on 5 Nov, 43 on 18 Nov, 31 on 20 Nov, 28 on 21 Nov, 37 on 23 Nov.

Purple Heron Ardea purpurea 

Akhna Dam: one 2 & 3 Nov.

White Stork Ciconia ciconia 

Bishop's Pool: one ad. 5 Nov, was the only report.

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus 

Akhna Dam: two 2-20 Nov. Fresh Water Lake South: eight 2 Nov.

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia 

Larnaca Sewage Works: seven 2-4 Nov, with three still present 20 Nov, two 30 Nov. Akrotiri Salt Lake: two 5 Nov, seven 18 Nov, three 23 Nov.

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber  

Larnaca Sewage Works: max. c760, including only four juveniles 2 Nov, c650 on 4 Nov, only 24 on 30 Nov. Akrotiri Salt Lake: c2300 on 5 Nov, c.4500 on 18 Nov, 8,000 on 23 Nov.

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons 

Larnaca Sewage Works: 11 (5ad+6juv) on 7-30 Nov; 12 reported 12 Nov.

Shelduck Tadorna tadorna 

Larnaca Sewage Works: nine 7 Nov, five 8 Nov, declined to two 20-30 Nov.

Wigeon Anas penelope  

A few birds on passage and arriving to winter. Larnaca Sewage Works: eight 2 Nov, one 7 Nov, four 8 Nov, 11 on 28 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: four 5 Nov, six 25 Nov.

Gadwall Anas strepera  

Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv 7 Nov, the only record.

Teal Anas crecca  

Fresh Water Lake North: c.30 on 2 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: c185 on 4 Nov, c.30 on 20 Nov, 50 on 30 Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: c75 on 5 Nov, 10 on 23 Nov. Akhna Dam: seven 8 Nov. Up to five also reported in several locations including Evretou dam, Aspro pools and Athalassa.

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos  

Noteworthy reports: Athalassa: up to 60 all month. Fresh Water Lake North: c.20 on 2 Nov. Limni Forest pool (Famagusta): 20 on 2 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: c200 from 4 Nov, with at least 300 on 30 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: 16 on 5 Nov. Asprokremnos Dam: 10 on 14 Nov. Evretou Dam: 82 on 20 Nov.

Pintail Anas acuta  

Zakaki Marsh: 14 on 5 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 10 on 7 Nov. Less than 10 also reported.

Garganey Anas querquedula  

Not many reports: Phasouri Reed Beds: two 5 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: four 5 Nov, one 23 Nov. Aspro Pools: one 25 Nov.

Shoveler Anas clypeata  

Larnaca Sewage Works: c440 on 4 Nov, reported to month end. Phasouri Reed Beds: five 5 Nov, three 23 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: four 18 Nov. Athalassa: max. numbers, 12+ on 21 Nov, 50+ on 28 Nov.

Pochard Aythya ferina  

Localised, mostly at Larnaca Sewage Works: 68 on 4 Nov, 58 on 7 Nov, 20 on 20 Nov, 45 on 28 Nov. Evretou Dam: five 20 Nov.

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca  

A small dynamic flock were reported at Larnaca Sewage Works: three 7 Nov, five 8 Nov, four 12 Nov, two 14 Nov.

Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula  

Larnaca Sewage Works: two 7-12 Nov.

Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator  

A good report from the ‘north’: Fresh Water Lake South: one 2 Nov.

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus  Kensington Cliffs: nine 3 Nov, six 14 Nov, 11 on 23 Nov.

Black Vulture Aegypius monachus  

Kensington Cliffs: one, presumably the long-term stayer, was present at least 3 & 23 Nov.

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus  

Larnaca Sewage Works: at least one present 2-7 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: up to six 5-23 Nov. Akhna Dam: one present 11-13 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: one 16-20 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: up to three 18-23 Nov.

Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus  

A rather scarce winter visitor. Akrotiri Salt Lake: one 5-23 Nov. Anarita: one ring tail 14 Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 14 Nov. Meneou pools: one reported, undated.

Zelemenos: two together 3 Nov, one 6 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: one 5 Nov.

Common Buzzard Buteo buteo 

Lady's Mile: one soaring,  probable migrant 18 Nov.

Steppe Buzzard Buteo b. vulpinus  

Quarry Beach: one reported 3 Nov.

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus  

Residents reported. Aspro Pools: one 3 & 4 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: one 5 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: two 16 Nov. Goudhi: one 24 Nov. Nata-Episkopi: one 25 Nov.

Bonelli’s Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus  

Phinikas: pair 3 Nov. Koilinia: pair, since 17 Oct, seen again 7 Nov. Aspro Pools: two 12 Nov. Papoutsa mountain peak: 14-28 Nov. Peyia: one 15 Nov, killed a Jackdaw. Ayia Varvara: one juv. 28 Nov.

Kestrel Falco tinnunculus  

A very common bird in Cyprus, supplemented by an influx of wintering birds. Marathounta mast: 17 in one circling group on 18 Nov. Goudhi: c.20 in loose flock aerial feeding 24 Nov. Episkopi, Paphos: eight 25 Nov.Otherwise up to five seen together in various locations.

Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus  

The latest autumn flock reported: Phasouri Reed-beds: eight 6 Nov.

Merlin Falco columbarius  

A rather scarce and localised migrant and wintering species: M1 Pools, Kolossi: one 14 Nov.

Falcon sp. Falco  

One juv. reported at the Larnaca sewage works 11 Nov, believed by the observer to be Peregrine of the eastern calidus race. Under assessment.  

Lanner Falcon Falco biarmicus 

Larnaca Sewage works: one immature falcon seen 13 Nov and again 30 Nov, reported as this species. Probably same bird as reported above. Record currently under assessment. If Lanner, it would be the 3rd record for Cyprus, the last being in 1996.

Peregrine Falco peregrinus  

Fairly well reported, mostly immatures. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to two, 1 ad + 1 juv, reported 2-8 Nov. Pairs reported early month Avgas Gorge, Quarry Beach and Cape Gata. Singles Zakaki 5 Nov, Cape Arnaouti (Akamas) 6 Nov, Mandria 12 Nov and Peyia 18 Nov, which was the latest

Chukar Alectoris chukar  

Very widespread and common in coveys and family parties. Max. reported: 17 at Koilinia 7 Nov and up to 30 Oroklini Marsh all month.

Black Francolin Francolinus francolinus  

Max. Zakaki Marsh: three males calling 5 Nov, four Mandria 14 Nov and up to six Oroklini Marsh all month. Ones and twos reported Achelia stream, Paphos Sewage Works, Mandria and Phasouri Reed-bed.  

Water Rail Rallus aquaticus  

Winter visitors reported: Akhna Dam: up to two 3-20 Nov. Aspro Pools: one 5 Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 5 Nov, three 6 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: three 5 Nov. 

Moorhen Gallinula chloropus  

A common resident. Fresh Water Lake South: c.50 on 2 Nov . Limni Forest pool: 12 on 2 Nov . Akhna Dam: 20 on 3 Nov . Bishop's Pool: 15 on 5 Nov . Phasouri Reed Beds: c50 on 5 Nov . Zakaki Marsh: c60 on 5 Nov , c.30 on 18 Nov . Up to seven reported many other suitable sites.  

Coot Fulica atra  

Locally very common. Max. numbers: Fresh Water Lake South: c.150 on 2 Nov . Limni Forest pool: 75 on 2 Nov . Akhna Dam: 95 on 3 Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: max. c235 on 4 Nov, c380 on 7 Nov , c60 on 30 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: max. c100 on 5 Nov . Zakaki Marsh: up to 50 on 5 & 18 Nov, 60 on 23 Nov .  

Common Crane Grus grus  

Larnaca Sewage Works: 9, including one injured juvenile 2-4 Nov; 2ad+5juv restless and on the move each day 7-8 Nov. Akrotiri Salt Lake: one ad. 5 Nov . Akhna Dam: one 3 Nov . Oroklini Marsh: c50 over flying low 4 Nov . Phasouri Reed Beds: flock heard mid morning 5 Nov . Troodos: flock heard at 1410 hrs on 5 Nov . Meneou: 10 heading south morning of 7 Nov . Pyrga, 20km. south Nicosia: 200 ‘cranes’ reported flying over 16.00h 15 Nov, very late in season.  

Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus  

No reports in the south? Fresh Water Lake South, Famagusta: 10 on 2 Nov .  

Stone Curlew Burhinus oedicnemus  

A rather elusive resident and winter visitor. Mandria: at least five 3 Nov , three 5 Nov.  

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius  

Lady's Mile: one 18 Nov . Evretou Dam: one 20 Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: two 20 Nov.  

Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula  

Larnaca Salt Lake: c30 on 8 Nov , Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 10 from 2-30 Nov, were the only reports.  

Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus  

Larnaca Sewage Works: present all month, max. c130 on 7 Nov. Up to 10 each, reported Potamos Liopetri and Lady's Mile.  

Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii  

Only reported, Lady's Mile: one 5 Nov .  

Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria  

Seemingly scarce this winter: Larnaca Sewage Works: three 4 Nov . Mandria: one 14 Nov.  

Spur-winged Plover Vanellus spinosus 

Akhna Dam: three 2 Nov. Fresh Water Lake South: c.75 on 2 Nov . Akhna Dam: two 3 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: one 24 Nov.  

Lapwing Vanellus vanellus  

Winter visitors turning up everywhere. Larnaca Sewage Works: three 2 Nov, nine 4 Nov, 21 on 7 Nov, 30 on 30 Nov, shows interesting build-up of numbers. Paphos Sewage Works: eight 5 Nov, 11 on 6 Nov. Mandria: 15 on 6 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: eight 6 Nov. Phasouri: 38 on 7 Nov. Akrotiri Salt Lake: c.30 on 18 Nov.  Paphos Plain, Kouklia: 20 on 23 Nov. Ones and twos Akhna Dam, Phinikas, Zakaki Marsh.  

Sanderling Calidris alba  

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to two 2-4 Nov, was the only report.  

Little Stint Calidris minuta  

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 100 from 2-8 Nov, at least. Oroklini Marsh: up to four all month. Lady's Mile: 14 on 18 Nov.  

Temminck’s Stint Calidris temminckii  

Larnaca Sewage Works: three 7 Nov , were good observations.  

Dunlin Calidris alpina  

Oddly scarce for one of the region’s most common migrant waders. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 21 from 2-8 Nov. Akrotiri salt lake: 20 on 23 Nov .  

Ruff Philomachus pugnax 

Most migrants have moved on: Larnaca Sewage Works: four 2 Nov, two 7-30 Nov.  

Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes minimus 

Athalassa: one 10 Nov , was the only record of this uncommon winter visitor.

Snipe Gallinago gallinago  

Notable passage early month. Fresh Water Lake South: two 2 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: a noteworthy c25 on 5 Nov  and four 21 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: ones and twos most days, with max. six 19 Nov . Aspro Pools: two 19 Nov . Phasouri Reed Beds: max. three 18 Nov. Evretou Dam: one 20 Nov.

Curlew Numenius arquata  

Larnaca Sewage Works: three 2 Nov, four 4 Nov, seven 7 & 8 Nov, two 30 Nov. Singles Silver Beach and Phasouri Reed Beds.  

Spotted Redshank Tringa erythropus  

Only at Larnaca Sewage Works: two 2 Nov, eight  4 Nov, six 7 Nov .  

Redshank Tringa totanus  

Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 12 on 4 Nov,  c15 on 7 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: up to eight all month. Ones and twos Ayia Napa Sewerage dump, and Fresh Water Lake South.  

Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis 

Uncommon migrant and winter visitor. Larnaca Sewage Works: six 28 Nov.  

Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus  

Late migrants: Aspro Pools: one 5 & 19 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: two 5 Nov . Oroklini Marsh: one 30 Nov .  

Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola  

Fresh Water Lake South: one 2 Nov . Zakaki Marsh: one 5 Nov .  

Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos   

Throughout the month, singles at Potamos Liopetri and Larnaca Sewage Works, only.  

Little Gull Larus minutus  

All records: Larnaca Sewage Works: one ad. 2-8 Nov, two ad. 4 Nov . Zakaki Marsh: one, only one leg, peculiar plumage 5 Nov .

Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus  

Max.  numbers reported: Larnaca Sewage Works: 47 on 2 Nov, c100 on 4 Nov, c.200 on 20 Nov, c150 on 30 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: c250 on 5 Nov. Lady's Mile: c.300, mainly adults, 18 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: c.200 on 18 Nov.  

Slender-billed Gull Larus genei  

Zakaki Marsh: 16 on 5 Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: two 7 Nov, one ad. with injured wing 8 Nov .  

Baltic Gull Larus f. fuscus  

A form of Lesser Black-backed Gull, common in Cyprus in winter, treated as a full species here: Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv 7 Nov. Aspro Dam: one         14 Nov.  

Siberian (Heuglin’s) Gull L. f. heuglini  

Another form of Lesser Black-back, increasing recognised as a separate species. Larnaca Sewage Works: two ads. 7 Nov .  

Yellow-legged Gull Larus cachinnans 

All forms of Yellow-legged reported, max. numbers: Cape Arnaouti: 42, noisy display on Agios Giorgios island 6 Nov. Aspro Dam: 40 on 14 Nov. Mandria: 100 from 19-25 Nov. Cape Drepanum: c.40 on Yeronisos Island on 29 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: c.50 on 30 Nov. Up to 10 also reported at above sites plus Fresh Water Lake, Potamos Liopetri, Mandria, Lady's Mile and Zakaki Marsh.  

(Mediterranean) Yellow-legged Gull L. c. michahellis 

The following observations were sub-specifically separated by observers: Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 13 on 4 Nov, 33 on 7 Nov . Up to five Ayia Triada, Petra tou Romiou and Quarry Beach.  

Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida 

Phasouri Reed-beds: one ad. 5 Nov . Zakaki Marsh: one ad. 5 Nov , were surprisingly the only reports.  

Black Tern Chlidonias niger  

Zakaki Marsh: one ad. 18 Nov , was the only report of this uncommon migrant.  

Rock Dove Columba livia  

Widespread, though not often reported. Avgas Gorge: 10+on 3 Nov. Cape Arnaouti, Akamas: five 6 Nov.  

Woodpigeon Columba palumbus  

Very common, often in large feeding flocks. Max. numbers reported: Mandria: 150 on 14 Nov. Asprokremnos dam: 750 all flying in line 14 Nov.  

Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto  

Up to 20 birds reported from many places including Oroklini Marsh,  Marathounta, Akhna Dam, Mandria.  

Barn Owl Tyto alba  

Khrysokhou: one feeding at dusk 28 Nov , was the only record.  

Little Owl Athene noctua  

Fairly common and probably under-recorded. Athalassa: one reported 3-10 Nov . Peyia: ‘resident in garden area’. Ayia Varvara: one 12 Nov . Aspro mast: one 14 & 19 Nov.  

Alpine Swift Apus melba  

These very late birds reported: Goudhi: c.10 on 24 Nov .  

Kingfisher Alcedo atthis  

Noticeable passage early month and winter visitor to most suitable wetlands: Akhna Dam: max. numbers, four 2 Nov. six 3 & 8 Nov. Fresh Water Lake: five 2 Nov. Potamos Liopetri: three 2 Nov. Zakaki marsh: three 21 Nov. Ones and twos reported Aspro Pools, Quarry Beach, Athalassa, Phasouri Reed Beds and Lady's Mile.  

Calandra Lark Melanocorypha calandra  

Uncommon winter visitor and always a good find: Larnaca Sewage Works: three 2 Nov. Mandria: two 6 Nov, four 8 Nov. Near Spiro's Pool: two 20 Nov.  

Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens  

A small group was well-watched at Mandria: seven 4 & 5 Nov, declining to one by 12 Nov.  

Crested Lark Galerida cristata  

A common resident. Noteworthy reports follow: Up to five each reported from Clapsides, Silver Beach and Salamis, in northern Cyprus. Larnaca Sewage Works: c10 on 2 Nov. Lakatameia: at least 10 on 5 Nov. Pera Choriou Nissou: c20 on 9 Nov. Akhna Dam: c.20 on 3 Nov. Lady's Mile: 10 on 18 Nov. Cape Drepanum: c.10 on 29 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: up to 20 throughout month.  

Woodlark Lullula arborea  

Wintering at low altitude sites in small groups. Cape Greco: two 2 Nov . Akhna Dam: four 3 Nov . Anarita Park: c5 on 3 Nov . Avdimou Valley: two 3 Nov . Quarry Beach: four 3 Nov . Koilinia: five 14 Nov . Peyia plateau: seven 18 Nov. Tsada golf club track: six 27 Nov .  

Skylark Alauda arvensis  

Very common winter visitor, with max. numbers as follows:. Mandria: 90 on 4 & 25 Nov, 180 on 19 Nov. Paphos Sewerage Works: c40 on 6 Nov. Aspro dam: 60 on 19 Nov, 70 on 25 Nov. Cape Drepanum: c.50 on 29 Nov. Up to 30 several other sites, including Ayia Varvara, Armou and Spiro’s Pools Larnaca.  

Sand Martin Riparia riparia  

A few late stragglers on passage. Salamis: one 2 Nov. Quarry Beach: three 3 Nov.  

Swallow Hirundo rustica  

Late passage migrants reported: Protaras: five 2 Nov. Quarry Beach: two 3 Nov. A few singles also reported.  

Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris  

Very scarce in winter. Ayia Varvara: one 28 Nov .  

Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis  

Rather scarce. Late migrants reported: Akhyritou, Ay. Nikolaos: at least one, in flock of c.12 on 3 Nov . Zelemenos: three 3 & 6 Nov.  

Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis  

Very common in winter. Max. numbers reported: Paphos sewage works: 50 on 4 & 6 Nov. Mandria: up to 20 from 14-25 Nov. Akrotiri salt lake: 20 on 23 Nov. Ayia Varvara: 10 on 28 Nov.  

Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus  

Common winter visitor to cultivations, though rather localised. Max. numbers: Paphos sewage works: 30 from 4-6 Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: c50 on 7 Nov. Mandria: 25 on 14 & 25 Nov. 

Water Pipit Anthus spinoletta   

Ones and twos all month, Akhna Dam, Paphos Sewage Works and Zakaki Marsh.  

Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava  

A few late migrants reported: Mandria: 10 on 4 Nov . Paphos sewage works: two 4 Nov , three 5 Nov.  

Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea  

Passage noted early in month: Aspro Pools: one 5 & 6 Nov, two 12 Nov. Avgas Gorge: one 6 Nov. Athalassa: one 7 Nov. Pano Akourdhalia: one 12 Nov. Avgas Gorge: one 17 Nov. Akhna Dam: one 20 Nov. Zakaki marsh: one 21 Nov.  

White Wagtail Motacilla alba  

Winter influx continues. Selective reports: Nicosia city centre: ‘100s’ roosting in trees 3 Dec . Mandria: 30 on 4 Nov, 50 on 6-12 Nov. Paphos sewage works: up to 30 from 4-5 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: up to 20 all month.  

Wren Troglodytes troglodytes  

Elusive and shy resident. Avgas Gorge: one 6 Nov .

Lakatameia: up to six 4-22 Nov. Achelia stream: five 4 Nov. Aspro Pools: six 4 Nov. Mandria: six 4 Nov. Athalassa: up to six present all month. Aspro dam car park: six 12 Nov. Akrotiri salt lake: 10 on 23 Nov.  

Bluethroat Luscinia svecica  

Localised winter visitor to permanent damp areas. Zakaki Marsh: two 5 Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 7 Nov . Akhna Dam: one 8 Nov . Oroklini Marsh: one 15 & 28 Nov, two 19 Nov .  

Black Redstart Phoenicurus ochruros   

Common winter visitor to light woodland and urban areas. Noteworthy reports: Koili: three 1 Nov. Cape Greco: four 2 Nov .Avgas Gorge: six 3 Nov. Phinikas: eight 3 Nov . Avgas Gorge: c20 on 6 Nov . Cape Arnaouti, Akamas: three 6 Nov. Koilinia: five 14 Nov . Asprokremnos dam mast: three 19 Nov .Cape Drepanum: five 29 Nov . Armou track: three 30 Nov .  

Stonechat Saxicola torquatus  

Very common winter visitor, usually in pairs. Max. numbers: Mandria: six 4-19 Nov, eight 6 Nov. Episkopi village – Paphos: c.10 on 8 Nov. Ayia Varvara: c.10 on 8 & 28 Nov. Koilinia: six 14 Nov. Lady's Mile: six 18 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: six 18 Nov. Tekke/Larnaca Salt Lake/Akhna: 10 in all 20 Nov. Cape Drepanum: 12 all in pairs 29 Nov. Armou track: six 30 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: up to 10 all month.  

Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe  

A few late migrants reported: Ayia Napa Sewerage Works: one 2 Nov . Mandria: one 3, 12 & 25 Nov. Quarry Beach: one 3 Nov . Zelemenos: one 3 Nov. Cape Arnaouti: one 6 Nov . Anarita: one 14 Nov .  

Cyprus Pied Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca  

Very late summer visitors reported:  Zelemenos: two 3 Nov.  

Finsch’s Wheatear Oenanthe finschii  

Quite a few of these enigmatic winter visitors found, including at new sites Ayios Nikolaos and Akamas: Anarita Park: 1m+1f  found 3 Nov , two 5 Nov, one male 25 Nov . Akhyritou, Ayios Nikolaos: one 3 Nov . Ayia Varvara: 1 m, 1 f. 8 Nov, one male 12 Nov, one fem. 28 Nov . Akamas SE: one male 12 Nov .  

Blue Rock Thrush Monticola solitarius  

Kamares: one 1 Nov. Phinikas: one 3 Nov . Quarry Beach: one 3 Nov . Stavrovouniou: one 4 Nov . Peyia: one present on crags 4-18 Nov. Cape Drepanum: one 29 Nov

One shot 25 Nov on Troodos and identified from description 

Blackbird Turdus merula  

Winter visitor. Koilinia: seven 14 Nov . Otherwise ones and twos reported at Stavrovouniou, Peyia, Bishop's Pool, Athalassa, Avgas Gorge, Cape Arnaouti, RAF Akrotiri, Akhna Dam, Evretou Dam and Akrotiri salt flats.  

Fieldfare Turdus pilaris  

Rather scarce and irregular winter visitor. Akhna Dam: one 2 Nov . Phasouri Reed Beds: two 18 Nov . RAF Akrotiri: two 19 Nov .  

Song Thrush Turdus philomelos  

Winter visitor, with max. numbers as follows: Marathounta: three 3 & 4 Nov . Bishop's Pool: four 5 Nov . Koilinia: 30+ on 7 Nov, 23+ on 14 Nov . Aspro dam car park: three 12 Nov . Avgas Gorge: one 17 Nov. Akhna Dam: three 20 Nov.  

Cetti’s Warbler Cettia cetti  

Fairly common, reported in suitable locations.  

Fan-tailed Warbler Cisticola juncidis   

No significant reports of this widespread resident.  

Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon 

Aspro pools: up to two 5-14 Nov. Akhna Dam: one 8 Nov .  

Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus  

Good late reports of this uncommon migrant: Phasouri Reed Beds: one                singing (!) on 5 Nov . Zakaki Marsh: one 5 Nov .  

Spectacled Warbler Sylvia conspicillata  

All reports follow: Larnaca Sewage Works: two 2 Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 2 & 30 Nov. Anarita: one 14 Nov . Tekke/Larnaca sewage works/Akhna dam: four in all 20 Nov. Tsada golf club track: one 27 Nov . Oroklini Marsh: up to four all month .  

Sardinian Warbler Sylvia melanocephala  

Very common winter visitor throughout the island.  Reportedly to the detriment of Cyprus Warblers. Max. numbers: Quarry Beach: c10 on 3 Nov . Cape Arnaouti: five 6 Nov . Cape Drepanum: c.10 on 29 Nov . Armou track: three 30 Nov . Oroklini Marsh: up to three all month .  

Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax  

Only reported on the west of the island: Marathounta: two 3 Nov . Aspro pools: three 6 & Nov . Koilinia: three 7 Nov . Ones and twos seen including Kensington Cliffs, Ayia Varvara and Armou.  

Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla  

Common migrant and winter visitor. Probably under-recorded. Avgas Gorge: two 6 Nov. Aspro dam car park: six 12 Nov. Koilinia: three 14 Nov. Singles also reported widely and heard daily at Strovolos.  

Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita   

Very common. Located by distinctive sad peep, probably indicative of abietinus  race from north and east Europe to Iran. Max. numbers: Oroklini Marsh: two 4 Nov. Avgas Gorge: two 6 Nov. Mandria: two 6 Nov, five 19 Nov. Aspro dam car park: five 12 Nov. Xeros Potamos: two 12 Nov. Aspro pools: six 14 Nov. Akhna Dam: two 20 Nov. Ayia Varvara: two 28 Nov. Armou: three 30 Nov. Singles widely reported.

Reported from Caledonia Falls and Troodos 5 Nov.  

Great Tit Parus major Aphrodite   

Ubiquitous resident, reported widely.  

Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae  

Troodos: one 5 Nov , only report.  

Penduline Tit Remiz pendulinis  

A first winter report of this localised uncommon winter species: Phasouri Reed-beds: one 5 Nov .  

Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio  

One rather late migrant reported: Phasouri Reed-beds: one 14 Nov .  

Jay Garrulus glandarius glaszneri  

Fairly common in the mountain forests, although only the following reports received: Caledonia Falls: one 5 Nov. Troodos: two 5 Nov.  

Magpie Pica pica  

Common resident with congregations of up to 10 commonly reported. Ay. Dimitrianos: 11 on 9 Nov, 16 on 10 Nov .  

Jackdaw Corvus monedula  

A high profile and noisy resident, often in large marauding flocks. Avgas Gorge: c400 on 6 Nov. Tala: c150 on 13 Nov. Episkopi, Paphos: 120 on 25 Nov.  

Hooded Crow Corvus corone  

A common resident.  Strovolos: 200+ all month with 227 on 30 Nov . Noteworthy report from the north: Fresh Water Lake: c.50 at roost 2 Nov . 

Raven Corvus corax  

Troodos Military Cemetery: two 14 Nov .  

Starling Sturnus vulgaris  

A good influx of winter visitors reported with flocks of up to 20 reported widely. Exceptional numbers as follows: Nicosia city centre: ‘hundreds’ roosting in trees 3 Dec . Mandria: 160 on 6 Nov, 60 on 25 Nov, 100+ on 6 Nov, 90 on 12 Nov, 300 on 19 Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: c50 in reeds 6 Nov . RAF Akrotiri: 47 on 8 Nov . Oroklini Marsh: 75 on 13 Nov, up to 20 until 29 Nov .  

House Sparrow Passer domesticus 

Widely reported, no noteworthy records.  

Spanish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis  

Common resident, with many flocks of up to 20 reported. Mandria: up to 30 from 4-30 Nov, with 50+ on 5 Nov. Paphos sewage works: 50+ on 5 Nov. Asprokremnos dam  mast: 120 on 25 Nov .  

Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs  

Becoming very common as winter visitors move in. Max. numbers: Koilinia: 60+ on 7 Nov . Kannaviou Dam: c20 on 8 & 29 Nov . Oroklini Marsh: up to 23 all month .  

Brambling Fringilla montifringilla  

A scarce winter visitor. Cape Greco: one on 2 Nov . Phasouri Reed Beds: one 5 Nov .  

Serin Serinus serinus  

Winter visitors arriving on lower elevations by mid month: Max. numbers: Ayia Varvara: eight 12 Nov, 20 on 28 Nov. Koilinia: 40+ on 14 Nov. Aspro dam area: 10 on 19 Nov. Kannaviou Dam: five 30 Nov.

Greenfinch Carduelis chloris  

Localised resident. Max. numbers, Akhna Dam: five 20 Nov. Lakatameia: up to four 25 & 29 Nov.

Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis  

Common resident, usually in flocks. Max. numbers reported: Aspro dam area: 50 on 19 Nov. Ayia Varvara: 40 on 28 Nov.

Siskin Carduelis spinus  

Scarce winter visitor. Caledonia Falls: nine 5 Nov.

Linnet Carduelis cannabina  

Abundant winter visitor from mid-month. Mandria: 30 on 12 Nov,  60 on 23 Nov. Anarita: 60 on 14 Nov. Ayia Varvara: 150 on 28 Nov. Avgas Gorge West: c.30 on 29 Nov.

Crossbill Loxia curvirostra  Elusive resident of mountain coniferous forests. Troodos: four 5 Nov.

Reed Bunting Emberiza schoeniclus  

Akhna Dam: one 2 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv. probably race reiseri 7 Nov. Akhna Dam: two 8 Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 23 Nov.

Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra  

Becoming more common as winter visitors supplement resident population. Fresh Water Lake North: three 2 Nov. Limni Forest pool (Famagusta): four 2 Nov. Paphos sewage works: five 4 Nov, four 6 Nov. Koilinia: three 7 Nov. Mandria: 10 on 12 Nov. Kritou Terra: c.10 on 12 Nov. Anarita: 10 on 14 Nov. Aspro mast: five 14 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: 20 all month. Singles also reported.
