Bird Records for July 2004

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]  

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Number of birds at the Larnaca Sewage Works built up from 1 on the 2nd, 3 on the 19th, 30 on the 21st to 32 on the 29th. Elsewhere there was 1 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 31st and 27 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.  

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

The only report was of 4 birds at Mandria on the 3rd.  

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

There were 6 or 7 all month at Akhna Dam, 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th and 4 at Kiti Dam on the 29th.  

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

There were single birds reported from Akhna Dam on the 1st and 4th and from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.  

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

Just one report of 9 birds seen at Akhna Dam on the 16th.  

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

There were 3 reported from Kiti Dam on the 4th but the number increased to 15 between the 15th and the 28th. There was also 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th and 2 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 31st.  

White Stork    Ciconia Ciconia

There was 1 present at Kiti Dam from the 25th until the 30th.  

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus rubber

8 were seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15th.  

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

The numbers at the Larnaca Sewage Works were 320 on the 7th, 230 on 21st and 210 on the 29th with 6 seen at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.  

Pintail    Anas acuta

1 was seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th.  

Garganey    Anas querquedula

Singles at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 29th and the 31st with 2 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th.  

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There were 3 at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.  

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

Single birds seen at Archimandrita on the 7th and a juv at Kensington Cliffs on the 11th.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

1 was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count plus 1 was reported from Vrecha on the 18th.  

Hobby    Falco subbuteo

A single bird, most likely a juv, was seen flying in the Tsadha Valley on the 30th and another juv was seen at Aspro Dam Pools on the 31st.  

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11th, 6 at Kensington Cliffs also on the 11th and 3 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 31st.  

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

The only report was of 2 birds seen on the Karpas on the 27th.     

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

The Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count was 25 birds, 65, including a pair with 12 juvs, at Armou on 13th, 54 at Ayia Varvara on 20th, 23 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 24th and finally 52, which included 3 family parties of 12 juvs each, at the Tsadha Valley on the 30th.  

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

There was a maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 6 birds, 1 heard at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11th, 2 females at the Achelia Dam on the 16th and a pair on the Karpas on the 27th.  

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

The Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count was 4, 25 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11th, 6 at Achelia Dam on 16th and 1 at the repaired Aspro Dam Pools on the 31st.  

Coot    Fulica atra

Single birds seen on a few days during the month at Oroklini Marsh, 35 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th with 90 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21st but only 30 reported from this site on the 29th.  

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

There was a maximum daily count of 50 from Oroklini Marsh, 23 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 5th, 56 there on 15th and 30 on the 29th with 11 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th and 3 at Akhna Dam on the 20th.  

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

Single bird seen at Xeros Potamos on the 16th and the 31st.  

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

3 at Akhna Dam on the 7th with 9 there on 26th, an adult with a juv at Asprokremmos Dam on the 17th, 2 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 24th with just 1 there on the 31st and up to 3 at Oroklini Marsh between the 9th and the 20th.  

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

There were 2 birds at Akhna Dam between the 14th and the 21st.  

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 13th, 3 at Akhna Dam on 20th and 42 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 23rd, 60 there on the 27th and 40 there on the 29th.  

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus

15 was the maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh with day-old chicks observed on the 4th and the 30th, 15 at Akhna Dam on the 15th and 12 at Kiti Dam on the 18th.    

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

There were 15 at Akhna Dam on the 20th with 6 there on the 26th, 12 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21st with 40 there on the 28th and 30 there on the 29th.  

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

3 seen at Akhna Dam on 15th and 26th but just 1 there on the 28th and another 1 at Kiti Dam on the 25th.  

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Early passage birds were noted with 1 at Akhna Dam on the 15th and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 28th.  

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 21st with 8 there on 29th.  

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 1st and the 8th but with 2 on the 3rd and 3 on the 2nd, 4th, 5th and the 6th.  

Redshank    Tringa tetanus

Away from 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 30th the species was only seen at Larnaca Sewage Works with 3 on 2nd, 5 on 21st, 2 on 28th and 14 on 29th.  

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

Early passage birds were 4 at Akhna Dam on 21st and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 23rd.  

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

Just one sighting of a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21st.  

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Always an early passage bird the reports are singles at Oroklini Marsh on 1st and 24th, Akhna Dam on 9th and 15th, Achelia Dam on 16th, Kiti Dam on 18th and the Asprokremmos Dam on the 31st with 7 at Akhna Dam on 20th, 2 on 24th, 3 on 26th, 4 on 28th and 3 on 30th plus 8 at Asprokremmos Dam on 24th, 11 at Aspro Dam Pools on 24th and 6 there on the 29th.  

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Singles at Oroklini Marsh on 9th, Akhna Dam on 15th, 20th, 24th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 29th, 7 at Kiti Dam on 5th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11th, 2 at Akhna Dam on 26th and 12 there on the 28th.  

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

4 was the maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh with the only other report being 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th.  

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

2 seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on both the 21st and the 29th.  

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

7 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on both the 21st and the 23rd.  

Audouin’s Gull    Larus audouinii

An adult seen at the Karpas on the 27th.  

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans  

There were 30 reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21st.  

Common Tern    Sterna hirundo

There were 6 seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 28th but just 1 on the 29th plus there was an adult and a juv seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29th. I have it under good authority that this species successfully bred at Larnaca Sewage Works again this year. Unfortunately I am lacking any definitive details. If you know of any would you kindly pass them along to me please?  

Little Tern    Sterna albifrons

Reported from only Larnaca Sewage Works with 6 from 1st to 23rd and 1 on 25th. Again, I have heard that this species too bred successfully at Larnaca Sewage Works this year. If you have any details then do please forward them to me.  

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

2 at Akhna Dam on 14th, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25th and 26th with 4 on 28th and 29th and 1 at Kiti Dam on the 25th.  

Black Tern    Chlidonias niger

Singles at Larnaca Sewage Works on 2nd and 13th and at Akhna Dam on the 14th.  

White-winged Black Tern    Chlidonias leucopterus 

4 at Kiti Dam on 5th and 1 or 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works between 7th and 25th plus single birds seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 10th and 11th and 3 at Akhna Dam on the 24th.  

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

10 reported from the Ezousa Valley on the 20th and 6 from Tsadha Valley on

30th.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

The maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh was 4 birds, the only report of this species received this month. 

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

2 at Mandria on 3rd, 1 at Pachyammos on 6th, 3 at Armou on 13th, 1 at Achelia Dam on 16th and 5 in the Tsadha Valley on the 30th.  

Great Spotted Cuckoo   Clamator glandarius

2 juvs in the Ezousa Valley on the 9th is the only report received.  

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

1 road casualty near the Paphos Airport on the 3rd, 2 birds seen at Chlorakas on the 8th and 1 bird at Pomos on the 16th.  

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

The only report was of 1 at Lythrodhonda on the 10th.  

Little Owl    Athene noctua

Singles seen at Ezousa Valley on 9th, Akhna Dam on 16th, Anarita Park [dead on road] on 18th and Ezousa Valley again on 20th.  

Swift    Apus apus

30 at Marathounda on the 4th and c15 at the Paphos Town Centre on the same date.  

Alpine Swift    Apus melba

Just one report of 3 birds seen over the Achelia Dam on the 16th.  

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

First reports this autumn were single birds seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 18th and the 28th.  

Bee-eater    Merops apiaster

4 at Lythrodhonda between the 1st and the 15th [local breeders?].  

Roller    Coracias garrulus

At Akhna Dam there were 2adults and 1 juv on the 4th with single birds on the 6th and 9th, 4 at Armou on 13th, 7 which included 2 juvs at Ezousa on the 7th, singles at Kannaviou on 20th, Archimandrita on 7th, Kiti Dam on 18th and 25th, Lythrodhonda on 14th, Polemi on 2nd, at Stroumbi on 2nd, 5th, 13th and 14th, at Tsadha on 19th with 3 in the Tsadha Valley on 30th, 3 in Tsadha - Stroumbi Valley on 2nd with 4 there on 7th, 1 at Tseri on 26th and finally 2 at Yioulou on the 18th.  

Hoopoe    Upupa epops

1 or 2 at Akhna Dam between the 4th and the 20th, 2 at Vrecha on 18th and singles at Ezousa on 20th, Kannaviou Dam on 27th and at Lythrodhonda all month.  

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

The Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count was 15 whilst 10 were seen in the Ezousa Valley on the 9th.  

Woodlark    Lullula arborea

3 seen on the Karpas on the 27th .      

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

Just one report of 8 birds at Kiti Dam on the 18th.  

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

30 at Achelia Dam on 16th, c250 at Aspro Dam Pools on 29th, 80 at Aspro Dam Pools on 31st, 70 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 21st with 60 on 29th, 10 at Mesa Potamos on 7th, 36 at Tsadha on 30th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 50 birds.  

Red-rumped Swallow    Hirundo daurica

3 at Aspro Dam Pools on 24th, 7 at Asprokremmos Dam on both the 17th and 24th, 2 at Ezousa on 20th, 2 at Lythrodhonda all month, 6 at Marathounda on 4th with 1 there 18th and 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11th.  

House Martin    Delichon urbicum

20 at Akhna Dam on 28th, 1 at Armou on 13th, 40 at Ezousa on 20th, c100 at Kannaviou Dam on most days between the 5th and the 30th, 70 at Mesa Potamos on 7th, up to 4 at Oroklini Marsh between the 3rd and 17th and 50 in Troodos on the 11th.

There were 3 at Oroklini Marsh all month.  

Cyprus Pied Wheatear    Oenanthe cypriaca  

Reported from Armou [juv on 13th], Asprokremmos Dam [juvs on 17th and 31st], Ezousa, Kannaviou Dam, Lythrodhonda [all month], Marathounda [juv on 4th], Troodos, Tsadha [juvs on 4th], Tsadha Valley and Vrecha.  

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

Just one report of a single bird at the Ezousa Valley on the 20th.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis

3 at the Asprokremmos Dam on the 24th with an Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 4.      

Reed Warbler    Acrocephalus scirpaceus

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11th with 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 31st.  

Eastern Olivaceous Warbler    Hippolais pallida

5 at Armou on 13th, 1 in Ezousa Valley on 9th, 2 at Lythrodhonda all month, 1 at Oroklini Marsh on 28th and 29th, 2 at Tsadha Valley on 30th and 1 at Vrecha on 18th.

Spectacled Warbler    Sylvia conspicillata

6 at Tsadha on 4th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 3 birds.  

Sardinian Warbler    Sylvia melanocephala

1 reported from Oroklini Marsh on the 28th and the 31st.  

Cyprus Warbler    Sylvia melanothorax

Reported from Armou [juvs on 13th], Aspro Dam Pools, Kensington Cliffs, Marathounda, Pachyammos, Troodos and the Tsadha Valley [juv on 30th].  

Coal Tit    Parus ater Cypriotes

10 at Mesa Potamos on 7th with 20 in Troodos on the same date.  

Great Tit    Parus major Aphrodite

Reported from Lythrodhonda [all month], Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Town and Tsadha [10 on 30th].  

Short-toed Treecreeper    Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae

6 seen in Troodos on the 7th.  

Masked Shrike    Lanius nubicus

Many reports of birds moving down from the mountains from Akhna Dam, Armou, Asprokremmos Dam, Ezousa, Kannaviou Dam, Kiti Dam, Lythrodhonda, Marathounda, Mesa Potamos, Phasouri Reed Beds, Troodos, Tsadha Valley and Vrecha. 10 was the highest number reported, from Armou on 13th [1 adult + 9 juvs] and Vrecha on 18th [3 adults + 7 juvs].  

Jay    Garrulus glandarius glaszneri

1 at Troodos on the 7th, the only report this month.  

Magpie    Pica pica

The only report received was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 3 birds. 

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Akhna Dam had a maximum daily count of c40 birds but the same observer reports c130 from there on the 1st plus c100 at Pyla on the 13th.  

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

The only report was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 6 birds.  

Raven    Corvus corax

2 from the Karpas on the 27th.  

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

The only report was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 75 birds.  

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

6 in the Ezousa Valley on the 9th, 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 14th and 3 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 31st.

Serin    Serinus serinus

1 seen at Mesa Potamos on the 7th.  

Greenfinch    Carduelis chloris

Reported from Armou [10 on 8th], Kannaviou Dam, Lythrodhonda [all month] and from Troodos.  

Goldfinch    Carduelis carduelis

Reported from Aspro Dam Pools [12 on 31st], Kannaviou Dam [juv on 6th], Lythrodhonda [all month], Oroklini Marsh [all month], Troodos and Vrecha.  

Linnet    Carduelis cannabina

10 at Troodos on 7th and 40 at Aspro Dam Pools on 31st.  

Ortolan Bunting    Emberiza hortulana

3 birds seen at Aspro Dam Pools on the 29th.  

Cretzschmar’s Bunting    Emberiza caesia

2 at Pachyammos on the 17th plus a male and a female at Vrecha on the 18th.
