Bird Records for July 2004

[The following list contains records that have not been corrected or corroborated]  

Little Grebe    Tachybaptus ruficollis

Number of birds at the Larnaca Sewage Works built up from 1 on the 2^nd, 3 on the 19^th, 30 on the 21^st to 32 on the 29^th. Elsewhere there was 1 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 31^st and 27 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.  

Shag    Phalacrocorax aristotelis

The only report was of 4 birds at Mandria on the 3^rd.  

Night Heron    Nycticorax nycticorax

There were 6 or 7 all month at Akhna Dam, 6 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th and 4 at Kiti Dam on the 29^th.  

Squacco Heron    Ardeola ralloides

There were single birds reported from Akhna Dam on the 1^st and 4^th and from Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.  

Cattle Egret    Bubulcus ibis

Just one report of 9 birds seen at Akhna Dam on the 16^th.  

Grey Heron    Ardea cinerea

There were 3 reported from Kiti Dam on the 4^th but the number increased to 15 between the 15^th and the 28^th. There was also 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29^th and 2 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 31^st.  

White Stork    Ciconia Ciconia

There was 1 present at Kiti Dam from the 25^th until the 30^th.  

Greater Flamingo    Phoenicopterus rubber

8 were seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 15^th.  

Mallard    Anas platyrhynchos

The numbers at the Larnaca Sewage Works were 320 on the 7^th, 230 on 21^st and 210 on the 29^th with 6 seen at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.  

Pintail    Anas acuta

1 was seen at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29^th.  

Garganey    Anas querquedula

Singles at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 29^th and the 31^st with 2 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29^th.  

Ferruginous Duck    Aythya nyroca

There were 3 at the Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.  

Griffon Vulture    Gyps fulvus

Single birds seen at Archimandrita on the 7^th and a juv at Kensington Cliffs on the 11^th.

Kestrel    Falco tinnunculus

1 was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count plus 1 was reported from Vrecha on the 18^th.  

Hobby    Falco subbuteo

A single bird, most likely a juv, was seen flying in the Tsadha Valley on the 30^th and another juv was seen at Aspro Dam Pools on the 31^st.  

Eleonora’s Falcon    Falco eleonorae

1 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11^th, 6 at Kensington Cliffs also on the 11^th and 3 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 31^st.  

Peregrine    Falco peregrinus  

The only report was of 2 birds seen on the Karpas on the 27^th.     

Chukar    Alectoris chukar

The Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count was 25 birds, 65, including a pair with 12 juvs, at Armou on 13^th, 54 at Ayia Varvara on 20^th, 23 at Asprokremmos Dam on the 24^th and finally 52, which included 3 family parties of 12 juvs each, at the Tsadha Valley on the 30^th.  

Black Francolin    Francolinus francolinus

There was a maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 6 birds, 1 heard at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11^th, 2 females at the Achelia Dam on the 16^th and a pair on the Karpas on the 27^th.  

Moorhen    Gallinula chloropus

The Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count was 4, 25 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11^th, 6 at Achelia Dam on 16^th and 1 at the repaired Aspro Dam Pools on the 31^st.  

Coot    Fulica atra

Single birds seen on a few days during the month at Oroklini Marsh, 35 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th with 90 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21^st but only 30 reported from this site on the 29^th.  

Black-winged Stilt    Himantopus himantopus

There was a maximum daily count of 50 from Oroklini Marsh, 23 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 5^th, 56 there on 15^th and 30 on the 29^th with 11 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th and 3 at Akhna Dam on the 20^th.  

Stone Curlew    Burhinus oedicnemus

Single bird seen at Xeros Potamos on the 16^th and the 31^st.  

Little Ringed Plover    Charadrius dubius

3 at Akhna Dam on the 7^th with 9 there on 26^th, an adult with a juv at Asprokremmos Dam on the 17^th, 2 at the Aspro Dam Pools on the 24^th with just 1 there on the 31^st and up to 3 at Oroklini Marsh between the 9^th and the 20^th.  

Ringed Plover    Charadrius hiaticula

There were 2 birds at Akhna Dam between the 14^th and the 21^st.  

Kentish Plover    Charadrius alexandrinus

2 at Larnaca Salt Lake on 13^th, 3 at Akhna Dam on 20^th and 42 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 23^rd, 60 there on the 27^th and 40 there on the 29^th.  

Spur-winged Plover    Vanellus spinosus

15 was the maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh with day-old chicks observed on the 4^th and the 30^th, 15 at Akhna Dam on the 15^th and 12 at Kiti Dam on the 18^th.    

Little Stint    Calidris minuta

There were 15 at Akhna Dam on the 20^th with 6 there on the 26^th, 12 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21^st with 40 there on the 28^th and 30 there on the 29^th.  

Temminck’s Stint    Calidris temminckii

3 seen at Akhna Dam on 15^th and 26^th but just 1 there on the 28^th and another 1 at Kiti Dam on the 25^th.  

Curlew Sandpiper    Calidris ferruginea

Early passage birds were noted with 1 at Akhna Dam on the 15^th and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 28^th.  

Ruff    Philomachus pugnax

Singles at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11^th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 21^st with 8 there on 29^th.  

Black-tailed Godwit    Limosa limosa

1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 1^st and the 8^th but with 2 on the 3^rd and 3 on the 2^nd, 4^th, 5^th and the 6^th.  

Redshank    Tringa tetanus

Away from 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 30^th the species was only seen at Larnaca Sewage Works with 3 on 2^nd, 5 on 21^st, 2 on 28^th and 14 on 29^th.  

Marsh Sandpiper    Tringa stagnatilis

Early passage birds were 4 at Akhna Dam on 21^st and 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 23^rd.  

Greenshank    Tringa nebularia

Just one sighting of a single bird at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21^st.  

Green Sandpiper    Tringa ochropus

Always an early passage bird the reports are singles at Oroklini Marsh on 1^st and 24^th, Akhna Dam on 9^th and 15^th, Achelia Dam on 16^th, Kiti Dam on 18^th and the Asprokremmos Dam on the 31^st with 7 at Akhna Dam on 20^th, 2 on 24^th, 3 on 26^th, 4 on 28^th and 3 on 30^th plus 8 at Asprokremmos Dam on 24^th, 11 at Aspro Dam Pools on 24^th and 6 there on the 29^th.  

Wood Sandpiper    Tringa glareola

Singles at Oroklini Marsh on 9^th, Akhna Dam on 15^th, 20^th, 24^th and Larnaca Sewage Works on 29^th, 7 at Kiti Dam on 5^th, 2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11^th, 2 at Akhna Dam on 26^th and 12 there on the 28^th.  

Common Sandpiper    Actitis hypoleucos

4 was the maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh with the only other report being 1 at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29^th.  

Black-headed Gull    Larus ridibundus

2 seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on both the 21^st and the 29^th.  

Slender-billed Gull    Larus genei

7 at the Larnaca Sewage Works on both the 21^st and the 23^rd.  

Audouin’s Gull    Larus audouinii

An adult seen at the Karpas on the 27^th.  

Yellow-legged Gull    Larus cachinnans  

There were 30 reported from Larnaca Sewage Works on the 21^st.  

Common Tern    Sterna hirundo

There were 6 seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 28^th but just 1 on the 29^th plus there was an adult and a juv seen at Larnaca Sewage Works on the 29^th. I have it under good authority that this species successfully bred at Larnaca Sewage Works again this year. Unfortunately I am lacking any definitive details. If you know of any would you kindly pass them along to me please?  

Little Tern    Sterna albifrons

Reported from only Larnaca Sewage Works with 6 from 1^st to 23^rd and 1 on 25^th. Again, I have heard that this species too bred successfully at Larnaca Sewage Works this year. If you have any details then do please forward them to me.  

Whiskered Tern    Chlidonias hybrida

2 at Akhna Dam on 14^th, 3 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 25^th and 26^th with 4 on 28^th and 29^th and 1 at Kiti Dam on the 25^th.  

Black Tern    Chlidonias niger

Singles at Larnaca Sewage Works on 2^nd and 13^th and at Akhna Dam on the 14^th.  

White-winged Black Tern    Chlidonias leucopterus 

4 at Kiti Dam on 5^th and 1 or 2 at Larnaca Sewage Works between 7^th and 25^th plus single birds seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 10^th and 11^th and 3 at Akhna Dam on the 24^th.  

Woodpigeon    Columba palumbus

10 reported from the Ezousa Valley on the 20^th and 6 from Tsadha Valley on

30^th.

Collared Dove    Streptopelia decaocto

The maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh was 4 birds, the only report of this species received this month. 

Turtle Dove    Streptopelia turtur

2 at Mandria on 3^rd, 1 at Pachyammos on 6^th, 3 at Armou on 13^th, 1 at Achelia Dam on 16^th and 5 in the Tsadha Valley on the 30^th.  

Great Spotted Cuckoo   Clamator glandarius

2 juvs in the Ezousa Valley on the 9^th is the only report received.  

Barn Owl    Tyto alba

1 road casualty near the Paphos Airport on the 3^rd, 2 birds seen at Chlorakas on the 8^th and 1 bird at Pomos on the 16^th.  

Scops Owl    Otus scops cyprius

The only report was of 1 at Lythrodhonda on the 10^th.  

Little Owl    Athene noctua

Singles seen at Ezousa Valley on 9^th, Akhna Dam on 16^th, Anarita Park [dead on road] on 18^th and Ezousa Valley again on 20^th.  

Swift    Apus apus

30 at Marathounda on the 4^th and c15 at the Paphos Town Centre on the same date.  

Alpine Swift    Apus melba

Just one report of 3 birds seen over the Achelia Dam on the 16^th.  

Kingfisher    Alcedo atthis

First reports this autumn were single birds seen at Oroklini Marsh on the 18^th and the 28^th.  

Bee-eater    Merops apiaster

4 at Lythrodhonda between the 1^st and the 15^th [local breeders?].  

Roller    Coracias garrulus

At Akhna Dam there were 2adults and 1 juv on the 4^th with single birds on the 6^th and 9^th, 4 at Armou on 13^th, 7 which included 2 juvs at Ezousa on the 7^th, singles at Kannaviou on 20^th, Archimandrita on 7^th, Kiti Dam on 18^th and 25^th, Lythrodhonda on 14^th, Polemi on 2^nd, at Stroumbi on 2^nd, 5^th, 13^th and 14^th, at Tsadha on 19^th with 3 in the Tsadha Valley on 30^th, 3 in Tsadha - Stroumbi Valley on 2^nd with 4 there on 7^th, 1 at Tseri on 26^th and finally 2 at Yioulou on the 18^th.  

Hoopoe    Upupa epops

1 or 2 at Akhna Dam between the 4^th and the 20^th, 2 at Vrecha on 18^th and singles at Ezousa on 20^th, Kannaviou Dam on 27^th and at Lythrodhonda all month.  

Crested Lark    Galerida cristata

The Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count was 15 whilst 10 were seen in the Ezousa Valley on the 9^th.  

Woodlark    Lullula arborea

3 seen on the Karpas on the 27^th .      

Sand Martin    Riparia riparia

Just one report of 8 birds at Kiti Dam on the 18^th.  

Swallow    Hirundo rustica

30 at Achelia Dam on 16^th, c250 at Aspro Dam Pools on 29^th, 80 at Aspro Dam Pools on 31^st, 70 at Larnaca Sewage Works on 21^st with 60 on 29^th, 10 at Mesa Potamos on 7^th, 36 at Tsadha on 30^th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 50 birds.  

Red-rumped Swallow    Hirundo daurica

3 at Aspro Dam Pools on 24^th, 7 at Asprokremmos Dam on both the 17^th and 24^th, 2 at Ezousa on 20^th, 2 at Lythrodhonda all month, 6 at Marathounda on 4^th with 1 there 18^th and 4 at Phasouri Reed Beds on the 11^th.  

House Martin    Delichon urbicum

20 at Akhna Dam on 28^th, 1 at Armou on 13^th, 40 at Ezousa on 20^th, c100 at Kannaviou Dam on most days between the 5^th and the 30^th, 70 at Mesa Potamos on 7^th, up to 4 at Oroklini Marsh between the 3^rd and 17^th and 50 in Troodos on the 11^th.

There were 3 at Oroklini Marsh all month.  

Cyprus Pied Wheatear    Oenanthe cypriaca  

Reported from Armou [juv on 13^th], Asprokremmos Dam [juvs on 17^th and 31^st], Ezousa, Kannaviou Dam, Lythrodhonda [all month], Marathounda [juv on 4^th], Troodos, Tsadha [juvs on 4^th], Tsadha Valley and Vrecha.  

Cetti’s Warbler   Cettia cetti

Just one report of a single bird at the Ezousa Valley on the 20^th.

Fan-tailed Warbler    Cisticola juncidis

3 at the Asprokremmos Dam on the 24^th with an Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 4.      

Reed Warbler    Acrocephalus scirpaceus

2 at Phasouri Reed Beds on 11^th with 1 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 31^st.  

Eastern Olivaceous Warbler    Hippolais pallida

5 at Armou on 13^th, 1 in Ezousa Valley on 9^th, 2 at Lythrodhonda all month, 1 at Oroklini Marsh on 28^th and 29^th, 2 at Tsadha Valley on 30^th and 1 at Vrecha on 18^th.

Spectacled Warbler    Sylvia conspicillata

6 at Tsadha on 4^th and a maximum daily count at Oroklini Marsh of 3 birds.  

Sardinian Warbler    Sylvia melanocephala

1 reported from Oroklini Marsh on the 28^th and the 31^st.  

Cyprus Warbler    Sylvia melanothorax

Reported from Armou [juvs on 13^th], Aspro Dam Pools, Kensington Cliffs, Marathounda, Pachyammos, Troodos and the Tsadha Valley [juv on 30^th].  

Coal Tit    Parus ater Cypriotes

10 at Mesa Potamos on 7^th with 20 in Troodos on the same date.  

Great Tit    Parus major Aphrodite

Reported from Lythrodhonda [all month], Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Town and Tsadha [10 on 30^th].  

Short-toed Treecreeper    Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae

6 seen in Troodos on the 7^th.  

Masked Shrike    Lanius nubicus

Many reports of birds moving down from the mountains from Akhna Dam, Armou, Asprokremmos Dam, Ezousa, Kannaviou Dam, Kiti Dam, Lythrodhonda, Marathounda, Mesa Potamos, Phasouri Reed Beds, Troodos, Tsadha Valley and Vrecha. 10 was the highest number reported, from Armou on 13^th [1 adult + 9 juvs] and Vrecha on 18^th [3 adults + 7 juvs].  

Jay    Garrulus glandarius glaszneri

1 at Troodos on the 7^th, the only report this month.  

Magpie    Pica pica

The only report received was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 3 birds. 

Jackdaw    Corvus monedula

Akhna Dam had a maximum daily count of c40 birds but the same observer reports c130 from there on the 1^st plus c100 at Pyla on the 13^th.  

Hooded Crow    Corvus corone

The only report was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 6 birds.  

Raven    Corvus corax

2 from the Karpas on the 27^th.  

House Sparrow    Passer domesticus

The only report was the Oroklini Marsh maximum daily count of 75 birds.  

Spanish Sparrow    Passer hispaniolensis

6 in the Ezousa Valley on the 9^th, 1 at Oroklini Marsh on the 14^th and 3 at Aspro Dam Pools on the 31^st.

Serin    Serinus serinus

1 seen at Mesa Potamos on the 7^th.  

Greenfinch    Carduelis chloris

Reported from Armou [10 on 8^th], Kannaviou Dam, Lythrodhonda [all month] and from Troodos.  

Goldfinch    Carduelis carduelis

Reported from Aspro Dam Pools [12 on 31^st], Kannaviou Dam [juv on 6^th], Lythrodhonda [all month], Oroklini Marsh [all month], Troodos and Vrecha.  

Linnet    Carduelis cannabina

10 at Troodos on 7^th and 40 at Aspro Dam Pools on 31^st.  

Ortolan Bunting    Emberiza hortulana

3 birds seen at Aspro Dam Pools on the 29^th.  

Cretzschmar’s Bunting    Emberiza caesia

2 at Pachyammos on the 17^th plus a male and a female at Vrecha on the 18^th.
