Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus   Phinikas: eight 8-Jan , with four 17 & 18 Jan at Asprokremnos Dam. Akhna dam: six 14-Jan , nine 19 Jan . 

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis  Larnaca Sewage Works: 45 on 2-Jan  , 40 on 7-Jan , up to 75+ on 7-19 Jan,  with only 20 counted 31-Jan . 

Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo  Greatest numbers: Akhna dam: 200+ on 14-Jan  , 156 on 19 Jan . Larnaca Sewage Works: 110 on 14-Jan, 225 on 21-Jan, with only c.80 on 30 & 31 Jan. Up to 10 several other sites, including Archangelos, Paphos Harbour, Evretou Dam, Asprokremnos Dam and Arminou Dam. 

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis  Quarry Beach: 15 counted on 24-Jan, at known nesting site, but no signs of this yet noted . Singles reported Paphos and Mandria.

Little Egret Egretta garzetta   Akrotiri salt lake: max. four 15-Jan . Akhna Dam: up to four 11-19 Jan . Singles to mid-month Archangelos, Manglis Lake (Lakatameia) and Akhna dam. 

Great White Egret Egretta alba   Akrotiri gravel pits and Salt Lake: one present 5-20 Jan , probably to month end. Akhna Dam: one 7-19 Jan . 

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea   Larnaca Sewage Works: five 2 & 30 Jan . Zakaki Marsh: six 8-Jan , 15 on 9-Jan . Akhna dam: four 14-Jan , 14 on 19 Jan . Singles Oroklini Marsh, Lakatameia and Asprokremnos Dam. 

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus rubber  Akrotiri salt lake: 4,000+ on 2 & 9-Jan . Larnaca Salt Lake: est. 1500 on 14-Jan ,  c.8000, noteworthy numbers, due to most of population having (temporarily?) moved from Akrotiri 31-Jan . 

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons  Larnaca Sewage Works: 36 on 24-30 Jan , 20 on 31-Jan , most present since November. 

Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea  Larnaca Sewage Works: two on 14-Jan, was the only report.

Gadwall Anas strepera  Larnaca sewage works: 41 on 7-Jan , 45 on 14-Jan , eight 21-Jan , 50 on 31-Jan . Phasouri Reed-beds: eight 8-Jan , nine 9-14 Jan . 

Teal Anas crecca  Larnaca sewage works: c.1050 on 7, 14 & 31 Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: 35 on 9 & 14 Jan . Evretou Dam: seven 11-Jan , one  only 16-Jan . Spiro’s Pool: six 30-Jan . Oroklini Marsh: max. 250 daily all month (RM).

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos  Larnaca sewage works: estimates between 500-800 from 7-31 Jan. Asprokremnos Dam: 45-54 between 16-18 Jan . Evretou Dam: max. 131 on 16-Jan. Several other sites including Athalassa, Kalavasos Dam Pool, Spiro’s Pool and Oroklini Marsh.

Shoveler Anas clypeata  Larnaca sewage works: c.1500 on 7-Jan , 850 on 14-Jan , at least 600 on 30-Jan , c.500 on 31-Jan , indicates decline. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to six 8 & 9 Jan . Athalassa: at least 20 on 9-Jan . Spiro’s Pool: 130 on 30-Jan . Oroklini Marsh: 19 on 14-Jan , otherwise max. 50 all month. Larnaca Airport pools: 170 on 31 Jan . Up to five reported Zakaki marsh, Akhna Dam, Aspro pools and Evretou Dam.

Black Kite Milvus migrans  Paphos rubbish dump, Ayia Marinouda: one 18-Jan . 

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus  Kensington Cliffs: 10 on      9-Jan , seven 24-Jan , otherwise six most days to 30-Jan . Xeros Potamos: two 10-Jan . Phasouri Reed-bed: one 30-Jan . 

Black Vulture Aegypius monachus  The single bird took up residence at Kensington Cliffs and was present most days 9-Jan to month end.

Cetti’s Warbler Cettia cetti   Ezousa River mouth: five 29-Jan. Birds heard Lakatameia, Ayia Marinouda dump, Athalassa. Up to three each reported  Episkopi, Evretou, Akhna Dam, Paphos Plain, Kiti Dam, Tala, Marathounta, Khrysokhou, Kannaviou Dam, Mandria irrigation canal, Xeros Potamos lower and Koilinia. 

Fan-tailed Warbler Cisticola juncidis   Becoming more vocal as the breeding season approaches. Reported, often three or four birds together, Lakatameia, Mandria, Armou, Paphos Plain, Archangelos, Khrysokhou, Ezousa River mouth, Larnaca Desalination Plant, Larnaca Sewage Works, Phasouri Reed-beds and Oroklini Marsh.

Sardinian Warbler Sylvia melanocephala  All reports listed: Armou: two 2-Jan. Koili: one 6-Jan . Kannaviou Dam: four 12-Jan. Pera Vasa: one 19-Jan . Neo Chorio: six, including three territories noted, 26-Jan . Oroklini Marsh: up to two all month.

Great Tit Parus major Aphrodite  Very common and widespread. Roudhias bridge: two    visiting potential nest site 10-Jan. 

Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae  Platres: one 19-Jan .

Jay Garrulus glandarius glaszneri  Kakopetria: one 1 Jan. Kelephos Bridge: two 10-Jan . Roudhias bridge: two 10-Jan . Phini: one 19-Jan . 

Magpie Pica pica   Very common. Several reports of loose groups of 20+.  

Jackdaw Corvus monedula  Max. numbers: Tsada golf course track: 70 on 17-Jan . Tala: c100 on 27-Jan. 

Hooded Crow Corvus corone  Very common. Max. numbers: Athalassa: c60 on 9 & 28 Jan.

Raven Corvus corax    Buffavento: one near the castle 6 Jan . Troodos village: one 29-Jan , was the only report. 

Starling Sturnus vulgaris  Strovolos: 18 on 3 Jan. Mandria: 95 on 6-Jan . Paphos Sewage Works: eight 7 Jan . Nicosia: 11 on 7-Jan . Strovolos: up to 18 on 8-12 Jan . Aglantzia: c30 on 9-Jan . Athalassa: 16 on 9-Jan . Phasouri Reed-beds: a very noteworthy 1200 on 14-Jan, coming to roost . 

House Sparrow Passer domesticus  Widely reported. 

Spanish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis  Fairly common, though localised, and usually in feeding parties.  Max. numbers: Lakatameia: c30 on 9-Jan . Armou: 40 on 11-Jan . Larnaca Desalination Plant: c30 on 30-Jan . Oroklini Marsh: up to 30 daily. 

Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs  Very common in winter feeding flocks, often on arable land with Skylarks, Meadow Pipits, Linnets, Goldfinches and Serins. Max. numbers: Armou: 30 on 2-Jan. Koilinia: 21+ on 5-Jan. Ayia Mamas: 50 on 8-Jan. Lakatameia: c20 on 13-20 Jan . Stavros tis Psokas valley: 300 in many flocks over wide area 16-Jan . Phini: 30 on 19-Jan . Armou-Tsada track: 30 on 22-Jan . Marathounta: 50 on 25-Jan . 

Brambling Fringilla montifringilla  Stavros tis Psokas valley: one, possibly more with Chaffinches 16-Jan . 

Serin Serinus serinus   Max. numbers reported: Agia Varvara: 50+ on 6-Jan . Lakatameia: c30 on 9-Jan, c40 on 20-Jan . Episkopi, Paphos: 70 on 11-Jan . Evretou Dam: 30 on 16-Jan .  Armou-Tsada track: 40 on 22-Jan . Potomas Magoundas: 100 in 3 flocks 25-Jan . Khrysokhou: 40 on 26-Jan . Kensington cliff top: 31 on 30-Jan . Also reported Troodos, Paramali, Mandria, Kannaviou Dam, Asprokremnos Dam, Lythrodondas, Marathounta and Aspro pools. 

Greenfinch Carduelis chloris  Often rather elusive, in smaller numbers than other finches, Max. numbers: Paphos lighthouse: 20 on 4-Jan . Agia Varvara: 25+ on 6-Jan .  Ayia Mamas: 10 on 8-Jan . Lakatameia: eight on 20-Jan . Aspro pools: 12 on 30-Jan . 

Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis   Very common. Max. numbers: Paphos lighthouse: 40 on 4-Jan . Agia Varvara: 100+ on 6-Jan . Lady's Mile: 25 on 9-Jan. Stavros tis Psokas valley: 30 on 16-Jan . 

Siskin Carduelis spinus   Only reported in this traditional wintering area. Simou: five 11-Jan .  

Linnet Carduelis cannabina   Abundant. Max. numbers follow: Armou: 60 on 2-Jan. Paphos lighthouse: 40 on 4-Jan. Agia Varvara: 75+ on 6-Jan. Mandria: 100+ on 10-Jan. Marathounta: 40 on 25-Jan. 

Crossbill Loxia curvirostra  Troodos: five 8-Jan , was the only report. 

Hawfinch Coccothraustes coccothraustes   Phini: one 19-Jan , was the only report. 

Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra  Common winter visitor, with some residents in song. Max. numbers: Strovolos: 25 on 3 Jan (AIH). Armou: 42 on 11-Jan . Stavros tis Psokas valley: 20 on 16-Jan . Marathounta: 125 on 25-Jan . Oroklini Marsh: up to 20 all month.
