Max. numbers follow: Larnaca Sewage Works: max. c100 on 1 & 22-24-Nov, 50+ on 6-Nov , 60 on 10-Nov . Akhna Dam: 50 on 3-Nov , 73 on 8-Nov , declining to month's end as lake dried out; 11 on 24-Nov . Canakkale Lake: 50 on 3-Nov . Polemedhia Dam: eight 5-Nov . Bishop's Pool: nine 20-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: 15 on 7-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: 20 on 7-Nov, 61 on 20-Nov . Oroklini Marsh: max. six on 15-Nov . Akrotiri Gravel Pits: 10 on 20-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: 28 on 20-Nov . Athalassa: 10+ on 21-Nov .  Kannaviou Dam: six 28-Nov .

Up to five also reported at many sites.  

Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus  

Larnaca Sewage Works: one 21-Nov . Akhna Dam: one 24-Nov .  

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis  

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to eight most visits 1-21 Nov, with 13 on 10-Nov  and 18 on 21-Nov . The only other site for this species was Akhna Dam, with one 8-Nov .  

Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo 

Reported all month. Max. numbers were: Larnaca Sewage Works: 150 on 25-Nov . Akhna Dam: 139 on 24-Nov . Otherwise less than 10 at coastal sites and inland reservoirs.  

White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus 

One confiding juv. was at Zakaki Marsh 1-27 Nov. There were three at Larnaca Sewage Works from 1-Nov, four from 19-Nov, five 24-Nov and six on 25-Nov. Singles reported at Akrotiri Salt Lake on 20-Nov , two on 27-Nov and one at Mandria 24-Nov , may have been some of the birds which ended up at the Larnaca Sewage Works on 24 & 25 Nov, respectively.

Phasouri Reed-beds: one 16-Nov and two from 20-Nov .  

Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax  

Bishop's Pool: 2 juvs. on 1-Nov . Canakkale Lake (Fresh Water Lake): one 3-Nov . Akhna Dam: one 8-Nov .  

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis   

Paphos Sewage Works: one 5-9-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: three 7-27 Nov.  

Little Egret Egretta garzetta 

Reports in Famagusta district and many sightings at Akhna Dam, Ayios Nikolaos and Canakkale may refer to the same birds. Canakkale Lake (Fresh Water Lake): seven 3-Nov . Akhna Dam: nine 3-Nov , 11 on 4-Nov with up to three most visits to 24-Nov. Ayios Nikolaos : 22 moving NE just after sunset 5-Nov, with similar movement of approx. seven flying to roost at (probably) Canakkale Lake 9-17 Nov .  Athalassa: two 21-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: one 6-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: one 1-Nov .  

Great White Egret Egretta alba  

Zakaki Marsh: two 1-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: two 1-Nov , one 16-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: one 1-27 Nov. Oroklini Marsh: one 13-Nov . Athalassa: one 13-Nov, five 27-Nov.  

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea  

Zakaki Marsh was the top site for the species, with up to 60 most visits and a max. of 81 on 20-Nov . Otherwise up to 10 other suitable sites.  

Purple Heron Ardea purpurea 

Mandria: one 6-Nov ). Phasouri Reed-beds: 1 juv. 11-20 Nov.  

White Stork Ciconia ciconia   

Two unusual singles reported: One at Larnaca Sewage Works 16-Nov  and one circling over School Area, Nicosia 29-Nov .  

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber  

Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 24 on 1-Nov declining to 14 on 2-Nov, two 10-Nov and one 12-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: 2 juvs. 7-Nov, 3 juvs. 16-Nov and one from 20-Nov to month end (an unusual site for the species). Akrotiri Salt Lake: 1500 on 7-Nov , c3850 on 20-Nov , c4160 on 24-Nov . Meneou Pools: 24 on 16-Nov . Larnaca Salt Lake (and adjacent airport pools): a peak c230 on 6-Nov , declined to 103 on 10-Nov , 45 on 19-Nov  and c60 on 22-Nov.

Aspro pools: one 5-Nov .

Larnaca Sewage Works: c800 on 1-Nov , 552 on 10-Nov , 500+ from 22-24 Nov  with an estimate of c1000 on 25-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: four 1-Nov , five 7-Nov , 42 on 20-Nov . Canakkale Lake: five 3-Nov . Oroklini Marsh: ones and twos all month, with up to six 16-27 Nov . Athalassa: approx. five 13-21 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: eight 20-Nov . Akhna Dam: seven 22-Nov , only two 24-Nov .

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to six 1-12 Nov, declining to three 16-Nov, two 24-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 20-Nov .  

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one male 7-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: one male from 20-Nov .  

Black Kite Milvus migrans 

Zakaki Marsh: 1 juv. from 11-Nov .  

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus 

Quarry Beach: six at roost 19-Nov . Galateria: five 21-Nov , were the only reports of this once-numerous species.  

Black Vulture Aegypius monachus 

Bird still present, now showing signs of age, probably 5 CY. Seen at Quarry Beach 19-Nov and Galataria 21-Nov .  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus 

Phasouri Reed-beds: up to three present most days 1-24 Nov, with five 6-Nov and six 30-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: one present most days all month with two 1-Nov . Canakkale Lake: one 3-Nov . Kouris Dam reed-bed/gorge: one 7-Nov . Akrotiri Gravel Pits north: five 7-Nov . Akhna Dam: one 7-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 6-Nov .  

Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus 

Unless stated, only females reported. Up to two at Akrotiri Salt Lake and surrounding area all month. One was at Larnaca Sewage Works from at least 7-Nov, with two there 16-25 Nov. Singles at Akhna Dam 8-22 Nov, Paphos sewage 8-Nov, Cape Arnaouti (male coming off the sea) 10-Nov, Ayios Nikolaos 11-25 Nov, Xeros Potamos gorge (male) 21-Nov and Tsada hills 29-Nov.  

Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus  

Larnaca Airport Motorway: one female 12-Nov; confirmation is requested from the observers, for this rather late migrant.

Paphos forest: one soaring at great height 13-Nov .

Singles seen at Mandria 2-6-Nov, Zakaki Marsh 2 & 6-Nov, Akrotiri Salt Lake 5-Nov, Armou hills 6-Nov, Akhna Dam 8 & 24-Nov, Acheleia 8-Nov, Aspro Pools 8 & 13-Nov, Pissouri bay 8-Nov, Ayios Nikolaos 19-Nov, Xeros Potamos chapel to N of gorge 21-Nov, RAF Akrotiri 28-Nov and Episkopi, Paphos 29-Nov.

Armou hills: one 22-Nov .  

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus 

Reported widely, with two at Tsada Hills 2 & 6-Nov. Paphos Sewage Plant (dark-phase adults) 8-Nov  and Ayios Dimitrianos 21-Nov  and singles Phlamoudhi (dark morph) 5-Nov , Polemidhia Dam 5-Nov , Armou hills 6 & 7-Nov , Aspro pools (juv.) 19-Nov , Stroumbi 21-Nov  and Polemi 21-Nov .  

Buzzard species   Tremithousa: one was not identified to species 2-Nov  

Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus 

Acheleia: one dark phase was present in the Ezousas Valley between Agia Varvara and Acheleia 5-30 Nov at least. Oroklini Marsh: one was observed 7-25-Nov .  

Bonelli’s Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus  

Aspro Dam car park: one juv. 8-Nov . Pentalia: two 12-Nov . Peyia Forest: two adults 18-Nov . Episkopi, Paphos: two 26-Nov.  

Osprey Pandion haliaetus 

At least one still  present in Akrotiri area. Akrotiri Gravel Pits: one heading to roost 7-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: one swooping and thermalling 19-Nov .  

Merlin Falco columbarius 

Larnaca Sewage Works: one 27-30 Nov . Lady’s Mile: one 17-Nov .  

Peregrine Falco peregrinus  

Avgas Gorge area: one brookei 7-Nov . RAF Akrotiri: one 8-Nov . Mandria: one brookei race on fields most days 8-30 Nov at least. Pissouri bay: pair flying over 8-Nov . Quarry Beach: two brookei 19-Nov . Xeros Potamos gorge (known territory): pale-breasted probably brookei 21-Nov . [The race brookei occurs regularly in Cyprus, especially in winter – its natural range includes the Mediterranean basin and Turkey.]

Zakaki Marsh: one 1-Nov, present since October. Canakkale Lake: two 3-Nov .  

Stone Curlew Burhinus oedicnemus 

Ayios Nikolaos : 81 on 2-Nov, with c50 from 9-18 Nov . Mandria: 36 on 3 & 5 Nov . Ampelia Forest, near Salamis: 43 on 4-Nov . Larnaca Salt Lakes and airport pools (in adjacent fields): c100 on 12-Nov, with c50 counted there 16-Nov  and 19-Nov . Xeros Potamos: c.100 most days 14-18 Nov .

Paphos Headland: one 2-Nov . Ayios Nikolaos : three 2-9 Nov, 52 on 25-Nov . Lady's Mile: two 16-Nov . Mandria fields: nine 24-Nov , six from 30-Nov . Curium Beach: one 28-Nov .  

Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola  

Lady's Mile: one 2-17 Nov. Larnaca Salt Lakes: four 12-Nov.

Akhna Dam: two 3-Nov , 13 on 8-Nov , seven 21-Nov . Canakkale Lake: at least 54 on 3-Nov . Paphos Sewage Works: four 7-Nov . Oroklini Marsh: one from 4-10, two to month end .

Good influx from the 3rd week of November. Mandria: at least one all month, with up to five 7-9 Nov  and c.30 on 17-Nov . Ayios Nikolaos : eight 2-Nov, up to 24 from 9-25-Nov . Paphos Sewage Works: nine 5-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: six 10-Nov , four 11-Nov . Oroklini Marsh: one 11-Nov, seven 21-Nov,12 on 24-Nov and peaking at 40 on 27-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: 53 on 20-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: 81 on 20-Nov .

One present at Oroklini Marsh from 6-Nov, with numbers increasing to 14 on 15-Nov, 33 on 25-Nov, 35 on 26-Nov and 20+ from 27-Nov to month end . Episkopi, Paphos: two 29-Nov .

Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus 

Akhna Dam: one 3-24 Nov, with four 15-Nov . Canakkale Lake: one 3-Nov . Oroklini Marsh: four 7-Nov, two 8-Nov with one 10-Nov to month end . Lady's Mile: one 20-Nov .  

Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola 

Zakaki Marsh: one 2-Nov . Akhna Dam: two 3-Nov .  

Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos 

Not common, with only 2 reports. Paphos Harbour: one 2-Nov . Polemidhia Dam: one 5-Nov.

Zakaki Marsh: two 1st-W from 1-Nov , with four 3-Nov, six, including one ad. 6-Nov and one juv. 20-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 12-Nov. Lady's Mile: one 1st W on 20-Nov .

Zakaki Marsh: 10 on 1-Nov, nine 6-Nov. Lady's Mile: one 5-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 12-Nov, two 19-Nov .  

Lesser Black-backed Gull (Baltic Gull) Larus fuscus fuscus 

Larnaca Sewage Works: one 11-Nov , two 11 & 25-Nov . Spiros Pools: one 21-Nov .  

Siberian (Heuglin’s) Gull Larus f. heuglini 

Mandria: three 4-Nov . Lady's Mile: one 6-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: two 21-Nov .  

Yellow-legged Gull Larus cachinnans michahellis 

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 50 from 1-25 Nov at least. Mandria: 100+ resting in field during strong winds - more michahellis than cachinnans 4 & 5-Nov. Asprokremnos Dam: 50+ on 6 & 26-Nov . Smaller numbers also reported.

Lady's Mile: nine 6-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 45 reported 11-21-Nov.

Zakaki Marsh: one 16-Nov .

Curium Beach: two 20-Nov .  

Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida 

Zakaki Marsh: one 1-Nov, two 2-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to two 10-25 Nov.  

Rock Dove Columba livia   

Pure flocks reported as follows: Kantara: eight away from habitation 5-Nov . Phlamoudhi: 20 on 5-Nov .  

Woodpigeon Columba palumbus 

Widely reported, plus, of note, up to 220 at Phasouri Reed-beds 16 & 20-Nov , 310 at Paphos Airport fields 23-Nov , c500 erupting from roost at 7.30h from 23-Nov to month end in Skoulli-Goudhi Valley .  

Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto 

Exceptional numbers at Mandria, with 200+ feeding together in fields 4-5 Nov .  

Barn Owl Tyto alba 

Aphrodite Hills, Paphos Motorway: one at 5:30pm 4-Nov . Erimi: one dead on road 5-Nov . Kissonerga Steep Hill to Beach: one 5:00pm 10-Nov . RAF Akrotiri: one 20-Nov . Pissouri- Paphos Motorway: one 5:15pm 27-Nov . Archangleos, Nicosia: one 28-Nov . Motorway near Chiroikitia: one dead 5-Nov .  

Little Owl Athene noctua 

Single birds seen or heard at Ayios Nikolaos, Asprokremnos Dam, Pissouri gorge, Athalassa, Vrysoulles and Lythrodontas.  

Long-eared Owl Asio otus 

Kannaviou Dam: one 2-Nov .  

Alpine Swift Apus melba 

Goudhi: one was seen flying very fast to the south 1-Nov. 

Kingfisher Alcedo atthis 

Zakaki Marsh: two 1-20 Nov, at least. Canakkale Lake: three 3-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: three 20-Nov . Singles present, probably all month Akhna Dam, Timi Beach. Mandria canal and Manglis Lake.  

Pied Kingfisher Ceryle rudis  

One was found at Akhna Dam 3-Nov .  

Wryneck Jynx torquilla 

Oroklini Marsh: one 29-Nov , was either late or over-wintering.  

Calandra Lark Melanocorypha calandra 

Mandria, ‘lark corner’: at least three, possibly up to six 1-26 Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: seven 8-12 Nov, three 19-Nov , one 25-Nov . Larnaca Desalination Plant: 19 seen near airport perimeter 22-Nov .  

Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens 

Mandria: one, at least, was seen near the beach 3-Nov .  

Woodlark Lullula arborea  

Salamis: three 4-Nov . Aspro Pools: one 7-Nov . Asprokremnos Dam car park: one 8-Nov and two 9-Nov . Armou hills: one flew over 7-Nov, then present all month in small loose groups of 4 or 5, with a maximum of 25, in four groups 10-Nov . Akhna Dam: two 8-Nov, then five 15 & 24-Nov . Vrysoulles: one 13-Nov . Ayios Nikolaos : two 18-Nov, four 25-Nov . Androlikou: three 29-Nov . Akamas SE: nine 29-Nov .

Very scarce now that most birds have passed through. Phasouri Reed-beds: three 1-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: up to five 1-5 Nov , six 11-Nov . Mandria: one juv. 6-Nov.

Paphos Sewage Works: 5+ on 3-Nov , were the last migrants reported.

Paphos Sewage Works: 5+ on 3-Nov . Mandria: two 7-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: two 20-Nov.  

Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava 

Zakaki Marsh: one 1-2 Nov . Paphos Sewage Works: five 3-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: one 7-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 6-Nov .  

Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea  

Mandria canal: two 5-Nov, three 13-Nov, max. nine 21-Nov  and seven 26-Nov . Three on the Acheleia-Geroskipou canal [possibly an extension of Mandria canal?] three 19-Nov . Larnaca Sewage Works: four 7-Nov . Singles reported from Kouris Dam, Ayios Nikolaos, Kannaviou Dam, Manglis Lake and Kyrenia Harbour.  

Dunnock Prunella modularis  

Akrotiri Salt Lake: one 5-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: one 9-Nov . Armou-Tsada track: one 10-Nov .  

Bluethroat Luscinia svecica 

Oroklini Marsh one male cyanecula on 15-Nov and one of nominate race on 29-Nov . Episkopi, Paphos: two red-spotted (nominate svecica) males 29-Nov .

Black Redstart Phoenicurus ochruros 

Ones and twos common and widespread throughout the island. Armou hills: three 7-Nov . Pissouri Bay: five 8-Nov . Cape Greco: 11 on 9-Nov . Armou Hills: 11 on 10-Nov . White River, Akamas: six 25-Nov . Akamas: eight 30-Nov.  

Cyprus Pied Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca   

Omodos: one on 7-Nov  was quite late in the season and surely the last record of the year.  

Finsch’s Wheatear Oenanthe finschii

Very common in wooded valleys and foothills, though usually shy and wary and heard only. Max. numbers reported, Asprokremnos Dam car park: three 2-Nov . Pissouri Bay: four 8-Nov. Cape Greco: five 9-Nov . Koilinia: up to five 12-13 Nov, 8+ on 20-Nov . Avgas Gorge: seven 25-Nov . Episkopi, Paphos: five 26-Nov. Akamas: eight 30-Nov.

Fairly common, often in the same habitat as Blackbird. Max. numbers reported: Aspro Amenity Area: three 2-Nov . Armou hills: four 10-Nov, three 27-Nov . Pissouri Bay: five 8-Nov . Cape Greco: five 9-Nov . Koilinia: c5 from 12-13 Nov, seven 20-Nov . Akhna Dam: 10 on 15-Nov, 14 on 24-Nov . Ayios Nikolaos : max. 14 on 18-Nov, seven 28-Nov .

Rather elusive and localised winter visitor. Ayios Charalambos: one 5-Nov . Akrotiri Salt Lake: one 7-Nov .

Reported from three, reed-bed sites all month. Aspro Pools: up to two to 16-Nov, three 19-Nov , four 26-Nov . Zakaki Marsh: two 6-Nov, four 20-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: six 20-Nov .  

Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus 

Very unusually late passage this year, with birds noted at Aspro Pools to mid-month. Aspro Pools: three 1-Nov , four 8-Nov  and two 13-Nov . Phasouri Reed-beds: two 1-Nov .  

Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus 

This summer visitor stayed very late this year in Paphos. Aspro Pools: up to two seen each visit 1-19 Nov.  

Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus 

Aspro Pools: one 8-Nov , was also very late.

Only reported from Aspro Pools, Kantara, Armou hills, Pissouri Bay, Asprokremnos dam area and Xeros Potamos (chapel to N of gorge).

Zakaki Marsh: c80 on 20-Nov . Strovolos: c40 on 23-Nov . Makedonitissa: c30 on 25 & 29-Nov . Ayios Dhometios: c200 on 29-Nov .

Up to 20 regularly reported throughout the month at Ayios Nikolaos, Tsada Hills, Aspro pools, Kouklia Pool, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Armou hills, Xeros Potamos, Agia Varvara and Manglis Lake. Marathounta Hills: c100 on 24-Nov .
