Larnaca Sewage Works: up to two 11-15 Oct, three 26-Oct.

Ayios Charalampos, near Davlos: four offshore flying west 15-Oct . 

Levantine Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan   

Ayios Charalampos: one flying west late afternoon 15-Oct

Not common as all following reports show: Mandria: up to three 1-30 Oct. Ayios Charalampos (north coast): four 15-Oct . Paphos Headland: two 29-Oct. 

White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus   

Larnaca Sewage Works: one still present 6-Oct , 32 on 9-Oct  and 31 on 11-Oct , four 15-Oct, five 23-26 Oct. Akhna Dam: two 14-31 Oct. Zakaki Marsh: seven 22-Oct , one juv. present from 21-Oct to month end, occasionally seen nearby. Petra tou Romiou: eight 22-Oct .

Little Egret Egretta garzetta    

Reported all month in ones and twos with largest groups as follows: Ayios Nikolaos : up to 39 flying NE around sunset nightly 1-31 Oct , ‘possibly to roost at Cannakale’. Fresh Water Lake south (Cannakale): 26 on 14 & 16 Oct, seen morning and afternoon, so perhaps the Ayios Nikolaos birds (above) are heading for an unknown roost?

One still present from last month, at Phasouri Reed Beds to 9 & 20-Oct. Zakaki Marsh: one 2 & 9-Oct. Athalassa: two 9-Oct, three 30-Oct . Larnaca Sewage Works: two 11-Oct . Aloupos Dam: two 17-Oct . Akrotiri Salt Lake: one 20-Oct . Akrotiri Gravel Pits: three 31-Oct .

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea    

Fairly common and widespread. Max. numbers as follows: Akrotiri Salt Lake: Max. 55 on 3-Oct , 87 on 20-Oct . Zakaki Pool: 37 on 6-Oct, 46 on 14-Oct , 80+ on 27-Oct.

Baths of Aphrodite: 16 on 9-Sep . Ayios Nikolaos : one 18-Oct . 

Black Stork Ciconia nigra   

An interesting record at Mazotos: one 3-Oct. 

White Stork Ciconia ciconia    

Phasouri Reed-beds: two 1-Oct . Akrotiri area: one 2-Oct , may have been one of birds from Phasouri Reed-beds.  Aradippou: two 2-Oct . Ayios Nikolaos: 10 Moving SW on 9-Oct . 

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus   One at Phasouri Reed-beds 27 Sep-3 Oct  and two at Akrotiri 2-Oct .  

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia   

 Larnaca Sewage Works: four 2-Oct , three 15-Oct. Zakaki Marsh: one 3-4 Oct . Akhna Dam: three 4-Oct, one 9-Oct. Ayios Nikolaos: one moving NE with Little Egrets 5-Oct . 

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber   

The majority of birds were at Akrotiri Salt Lake, with up to 700 counted 2-20 Oct, 2,900 on 20-Oct. Up to 81 were at Larnaca Sewage Works 2-15 Oct, with 31 still there 23-Oct. 

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons   

Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv. 11-15 Oct.

Shelduck Tadorna tadorna    

Early arrivals included two at Larnaca Sewage Works 6-Oct, one 11-26 Oct. A noteworthy  27 were at Lady's Mile 25-27-Oct. 

Wigeon Anas penelope   

First arrivals noted. Akrotiri area: two 2-Oct . Larnaca Sewage Works: four 11-Oct, three 26-Oct . Aloupos Dam: 20 on 17-Oct . Phasouri Reed-beds: two 20-Oct. 

Gadwall Anas strepera   

Only one report - Evretou Dam: two 6-Oct . 

Teal Anas crecca   

Reported from the usual sites all month, with max. numbers as follows: Larnaca Sewage Works: 67 on 11-Oct, 74 on 26-Oct . Fresh Water Lake South: 90 on 14-Oct . Phasouri Reed Beds: 52 on 20-Oct. 

Pintail Anas acuta   

Only reported in the Akrotiri area, with three there 2-Oct, up to eight at Phasouri Reed-beds from 3-Oct and 10 Zakaki Marsh from 20-Oct. 

Garganey Anas querquedula   

Mostly ones and twos at a few sites all month with eight at Phasouri Reed-beds 5-Oct, four Fresh Water Lake South 14-Oct  and three Aspro Pools 28-Oct. 

Shoveler Anas clypeata   

Max. numbers at Larnaca Sewage Works with 290 on 2-Oct , 401 on 11-Oct and 447 on 26-Oct . Less than 20 at other sites. 

Pochard Aythya ferina   

Larnaca Sewage Works: five 26-Oct and Phasouri Reed-beds: two 20-Oct , were the month’s only reports. 

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca   

Still present at Phasouri Reed Beds with three 20-Oct , four 24-Oct  and one 27-Oct . Zakaki Marsh: one was reported 20-Oct . 

Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus  

Some reports from September, with 11 near Amathus Hotel, Limassol and c150 at Petra tou Romiou c150 on 9-Sep and three  Inia 10-Sep. This year’s spectacular migration tricked out by early October, with eight at Akrotiri 1-Oct, five on 2-Oct, nine 5-Oct, 14 on 7-Oct and two on 9-Oct. Mandria: one 1-Oct, three 3-Oct. Aphrodite’s Baths: 13 on 4-Oct  One Aspro Pools and one Choletra 8-Oct . 

Black Kite Milvus migrans   

Akrotiri: one 1-Oct . Mandria: one 1-Oct . Akrotiri Salt Lake: six flew in to roost 5-Oct. 

Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus   

Mandria: one imm. during our field trip on 1-Oct. Phasouri Reed-beds: 1juv. 9-Oct. 

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus   

A few sightings, but it looks bad for this once-common species: Trachypedoula: nine 2-Oct . Vretsia: three 8-Oct . Kerynas cliffs-Koilinia: three 23-Oct. Avdimou: four distant, over Episkopi 23-Oct .  

Black Vulture Aegypius monachus   

The single bird hangs on!  Kerynas cliffs: seen at the Ayios Ioannis feeding station with a Griffon 23-Oct . 

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus   

Very common as more birds pass through and arrive to over-winter. Max. numbers at Phasouri Reed-beds, with nine 1-Oct , five 5-Oct  and up to three all month. Ones and twos widespread all month, particularly at Zakaki Marsh, Aspro Pools and Larnaca Sewage Works.

Pervolia: one ‘ring-tail’ 1-Oct . Kiti Dam: one ‘ring-tail’ 1-Oct . 

Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus   

Agia Varvara: one 1st-winter 1-Oct . Akrotiri Salt Lake: two 5-Oct . Phasouri Reed-beds: one juv. 9-Oct . 

Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus   

Akrotiri Salt Lake: one juv. 1-Oct , two 5-Oct . Phasouri Reed-beds: one 22-Oct  and one ad. male 27-Oct . 

Goshawk Accipiter gentilis   

Kannaviou: one 17-Oct . One seen at MC’s home, Kalo Khorio Orinis 21, 24 & 28 Oct (MC). Koilinia: one juv. mobbed by Kestrels 23-Oct . 

Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus   

A good steady passage recorded, with all reports listed. Aspro Pools: one seen by group 1-Oct  and another 23 & 24-Oct. Akrotiri: two 3-Oct and one 7-Oct. Akhna Dam: one 4, 14 & 31-Oct . RAF Akrotiri one 7-Oct . Stavrokonnou: one 8-Oct . Near Davros, north coast: one 16-Oct .  Melissa-Flamoudi: two 16-Oct . Mandria: one 24 & 30-Oct. Avgas Gorge: one 31-Oct .

Akrotiri area: 17 on 2-Oct , 30 south in 1 hour in early afternoon 3-Oct . Akhna Dam: 68 leaving tree roost 4-Oct, eight 9-Oct and 13 on 16-Oct. Paphos sewage plant: two 6-Oct. Aspro pools: one fem. 10-Oct. Larnaca Sewage Works: four 15-Oct. Zakaki Marsh: two 20-Oct.

Armou Hills: one disturbed from upland scrubby heath 3-Oct . 

Water Rail Rallus aquaticus   

Akrotiri area’: two 2-Oct . Phasouri Reed-beds: four heard 3-Oct , two 20-Oct . Zakaki Marsh: three 20-Oct , with one reported to month end . Akrotiri Salt Lake: three 20-Oct . Goudhi: one 27-Oct . Paphos sewage plant: one 31-Oct . 

Little Crake Porzana parva 

Phasouri Reed-beds: one juv. 3-Oct . 

Moorhen Gallinula chloropus   

Widespread with interesting max. counts as follows: Fresh Water Lake South:60 on 14-Oct. Zakaki Marsh: 87 on 25-Oct  

Coot Fulica atra   

Some large counts reported including c500 Larnaca Sewage Works 2-Oct  and 595 on 11-Oct ; at least 2,500 were counted at a dam on Aloupos river, Morphou 17-Oct . 

Common Crane Grus grus   

Good, localised passage reported from east end of island from 7-9 October! Phasouri Reed Beds: one 1-Oct . Larnaca Salt Lake: 310 on 7-Oct, 70 on 9-Oct, 44 on 28-Oct . Meneou Pools: 170 on 7-Oct, 80 on 9-Oct . Akrotiri Salt Lake: 32 on 9-Oct. Pervolia: 80 on 9-Oct and 640 flew over Larnaca in four large groups 9-Oct  and large groups heard flying over at night. Cape Greco: c240 (c80 at 9.00h and 160 at 11.00h) on 9-Oct. Dhekalia: six 11-Oct . Larnaca Airport Pools (South): 41 on 11-Oct. Larnaca Sewage Works: 13, including 2 juvs. flying low in front of hide 15-Oct, with three 26-Oct.

Ayios Nikolaos : up to 55 from 8-31 Oct, with 80 on 12-Oct . Mandria: eight 23-Oct , 20+ on 30-Oct . 

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius   

Akhna Dam: eight 4-Oct , declining to two 16-Oct . Larnaca Sewage Works: four 6-Oct , one 11-Oct . Fresh Water Lake South: three 14-Oct . 

Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula   

Akrotiri Gravel Pits: one 1-Oct , five 4-Oct , three 16-Oct . Akhna Dam: two 31-Oct . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 11-Oct . Fresh Water Lake South: four 16-Oct . 

Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii    

Lady’s Mile: one since September to 20-Oct, at least. Paphos headland: up to five all month. 

Dotterel Charadrius morinellus   

One moulting adult at ‘lark corner, Mandria on 3-Oct , was an excellent record. 

Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria   

Akhna Dam: one 16-Oct . Paphos headland: one 14-29 Oct, at least. Ayios Nikolaos : two 31-Oct . 

Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola   

Paphos headland: two 5-Oct , one 21-Oct. Akhna Dam: one 14-Oct . 

Spur-winged Plover Vanellus spinosus   

Numbers at Akhna Dam may be a result of Oroklini Marsh drying up in late September… Larnaca Sewage Works: one 11-Oct . Akhna Dam: eight 4-Oct , 33 on 14-Oct, up to 11 from 21-31 Oct . Zakaki Marsh: one 5 - 27-Oct. Paphos Sewage Plant: four 6-Oct, with three there to 29-Oct . Fresh Water Lake South: a noteworthy 46 on 14-Oct .

Mandria Canal: one 1-28 Oct. Kannaviou Dam: one 7-11 Oct . Fresh Water Lake South: one 14-Oct. Acheleia Dam: one 20-26 Oct. Akhna Dam: two 21-Oct . Zakaki Marsh: one 25-Oct. 

Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola   

Zakaki marsh: one since 24-Sep to 5-Oct & again 20 Oct. Akhna Dam: one 31-Oct .

Paphos headland: two 5-Oct  and at least one daily in the area all month. Akrotiri gravel Pits: one 20-Oct.

Paphos headland: four 5-Oct , one 26-Oct. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 11-Oct . 

Slender-billed Gull Larus genei  

Larnaca Sewage Works: two 11-15. 

Audouin’s Gull Larus audouinii   

Galounopetra Point: one 14-Oct .  Davlos-Galounia: one 1st winter 15-Oct . 

Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus fuscus  

Chrysochou Bay: 4 ads and one 1st winter 1-Oct . Kazivera: one 17-Oct . Larnaca Sewage Works: one 11-Oct . Zakaki Marsh: one 20-Oct . Aspro Pools: one 28-Oct . 

Siberian Gull L. f. heuglini   

Akhna Dam: one 21-Oct . 

Caspian Gull Larus cachinnans cachinnans    

Mandria: 87 on 25-Oct, 50+ on 29-Oct . Many ‘Yellow-legged’ of which several hundred were reported at Larnaca Sewage Works and Asprokremnos Dam were probably of this form. Note of caution – immature cachinnans, even near-adults retain ring-billed appearance (bill-bands) in winter, a similar feature found on armenicus.

Zakaki marsh: up to three 3-22 Oct, with four 5-Oct . Akrotiri area: four 2-Oct . Larnaca Sewage Works: six 2 & 15-Oct, two 23-Oct. Akhna Dam: 11 on 14-Oct , up to eight 16-21 Oct. 

White-winged Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus   

Most birds moved on by early October. Larnaca Sewage Works: nine 4-Sep, four most visits 18-Sep - 11-Oct . Zakaki marsh: one 5-Oct.  

Woodpigeon Columba palumbus  

Largest numbers at Ayios Nikolaos  with 133 on 17-Oct  and Akhna Dam with 230 on 31-Oct . 

Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur   

Asprokremnos: two 1-Oct . Aspro Pools: three 1-Oct . Mandria Cana:l two 1-Oct . Mandria: eight 2-Oct , four juvs. 13-Oct . Akrotiri area: two 2-Oct . Smyies: one 4-Oct . Akhna Dam: four 4-Oct . The latest was a flyover single bird at Mandria on 29-Oct . 

Barn Owl Tyto alba  

Mandria: one 23-Oct . Polis army base: one seen flying at 4:00 am on 26-Oct . 

Scops Owl Otus scops cyprius    

Polis: one heard 4-Oct . 

Little Owl Athene noctua   

Ayios Nikolaos : one all month, with two 1 & 18-Oct . Polis: one heard 4 & 27-Oct . Kamares: one 5-Oct . Ayios Charalampos headland: one 15-Oct . Pano Platres: one 16-Oct. Anarita Park area: one 20-Oct . Lythrodontas: one 24-Oct .  

Long-eared Owl Asio otus  

Kato Paphos: one at 00.30hrs preying on arriving wagtails 27-Oct . Mandria: one climbed high over sea, heading south 30-Oct . 

Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus   

Erimi Gardens village: one heard very clearly for 1 hour not seen 11-Oct .  

Kingfisher Alcedo atthis   

Common at most wetlands and sheltered coasts. 28 birds reported from 16 locations. 

Bee-eater Merops apiaster   

The numbers of passage birds declined by the first week of October and the latest was on the 22-Oct. The noteworthy records follow:  Ayios Nikolaos : 32 on 1-Oct . Akrotiri area: 83 on 2-Oct . Akhna Dam: 12 on 9-Oct . Phasouri Reed-beds: four 22-Oct . Unusually, MC reported ‘hundreds passing over Kalo Khorio Orinis’ throughout the month.

A trickle of migrants still present. Mandria: up to three 1-7 Oct. Avgorou: one 8-Oct . Vrysoulles: one 14-Oct . Agios Georgios : one 20-Oct .

Hundreds reported at Larnaca 18-Sep, many flying out to sea. Still many birds present to mid-October. Zakaki Marsh: 20 on 3-Oct . Akhna Dam: nine 4-Oct . Larnaca Sewage Works: three 2-Oct . 12 on 6-Oct , a noteworthy c100 on 11-Oct  and three 15-Oct.
