Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis  

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 47 from 14-16 Aug , with a steady increase of 55 on 5-Sep, 60 on 14-Sep and 92 on 25-Sep. Akhna Dam: up to 32 reported all visits 3-27 Sep.  Zakaki Marsh: nine 12-Sep, 14 on 17-Sep and 17 on 20-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: max. 26 on 20-Sep. Up to 10 reported Saittas Dam, Perapedhi Dam, Athalassa,  Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Bishops Pool and Aspro Pools. 

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis 

Larnaca Sewage Works: at least one 5-25 Sep, two 14-Sep  and three 9 Sep . Akhna Dam: one 24-26 Sep . 

Cory’s Shearwater Calonectris diomedea  

Only one record of this greatly under-reported species. Chrysochou Bay: two 28-Sep . 

Levantine Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan   

Chrysochou Bay: c10 on 28-Sep . 

Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo  

There were some very early reports: Dhekelia power stn.: seven 21-Sep . Larnaca Sewage Works one 24-25-Sep. 

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis  

Max. numbers: Davlos: three 3-Sep. Mandria: ive 8-Sep . Lachi boat trip: four 9-Sep. Kensington Cliffs: 6 ad, 3 juvs. on 13-Sep. Spiros Beach buoys: c5 on 27-Sep. Singles also reported at Mandria at other times and at Pomos and Chrysochou Bay. 

Pygmy Cormorant Phalacrocorax pygmeus  

One was reported, awaiting further confirmation, flying near Akrotiri Salt Lake on 11-Sep, taken in flight by a Peregrine). 

White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus   

One remained at Larnaca Sewage Works all month. 

Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus  

Akhna Dam: 1 juv. on 2-Sep , two 4-Sep . Athalassa Dam: one male 6-Sep . 

Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax   

Some interesting reports of large flocks occurring in the east and north. Akhna Dam: c.100 on 1-Sep with 18 on 25-Sep . Davlos: 63 seen mid-morning 3-Sep . Zakaki Marsh: seven 17-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: three 24-Sep . RAF Akrotiri: c25 flying over at 21.30hrs on 29-Sep . Athalassa Dam: c7+ seen from 21 Sep . 

Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides   

Small numbers on passage, mostly early in the month Akhna Dam: one 1-Sep . Zakaki Marsh: one 2-7 Sep with three 5-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 5-Sep , one 22-Sep. Ayios Yeronisos: one 10-Sep . 

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis  

Only reported from 3 sites: Akhna Dam: one 1-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to five 1-27 Sep with two 30-Sep. Lymbia dam: two 20-Sep. 

Little Egret Egretta garzetta  

Max. numbers, Akhna Dam: 10 on 1-Sep, 23 on 15-Sep, 16 on 20-Sep, three from 20-27 Sep. Davlos: 25 in the morning, 15 in the afternoon on 3-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: three 8-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: five 1-Sep, three 8-Sep, seven 17-Sep. Lachi - Cape Arnaouti: 106 on 10-Sep, including 71 at Amarosa Fontana. Akrotiri ‘harrier’ roost: 36 on 10-Sep, six at Akrotiri Masts 20-Sep and 18 on the lake 29-30 Sep. Athalassa: 12 on 18-Sep, 17 on 25-Sep and 24 on 28-Sep. Lymbia dam: 41 on 20-Sep. Ones and twos also reported from these sites and a few other locations. 

Great White Egret Egretta alba  

Single birds reported from Akhna Dam 20-Sep , Athalassa 25-28 Sep , Akrotiri Salt Lake 29-Sep  and Phasouri Reed-beds (possibly from Akrotiri Salt Lake) 30-Sep. 

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea   Max. numbers reported: Larnaca Sewage Works: 14 on 3-Sep, 16 on 25-Sep, with up to 5 most visits. Strakka: 10 on 3-Sep. Akhna Dam: 22 on 23-Sep and 13 on 27 Sep, with up to 5 most visits. Flamoudi: 11 on 3-Sep. Davlos: 54 at 9.45hrs on 3-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake: 29 on 5-Sep, 27 on 29-Sep. Cape Arnaouti: 20 on 22 Sep. Up to six at Phasouri Reed-beds, Mandria, Akrotiri Reed-beds, Zakaki Marsh, Evretou, Athalassa and Aspro Pools.

Purple Heron Ardea purpurea  

Davlos: 154 reported 3-Sep, in 4 groups, including 21 at 11.25hrs, 33 at 15.05hrs and 72 at 10.45hrs. Lachi: 54 flying over during boat trip on 10-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: 37 moving southwest 21-Sep . Cape Arnaouti: four 22-Sep. 

Black Stork Ciconia nigra   

Akrotiri Salt Lake: three on 3-Sep , with one imm. present near large masts 5-30 Sep. 

White Stork Ciconia ciconia  

One, first seen 5-Sep was reported at Akrotiri Salt Lake, Zakaki Marsh and Phasouri Reed-beds area until 9 Sep. Two were at Phasouri Reed-beds 8-Sep  and seven at Akrotiri Salt Lake: 12-Sep . 

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus  

Paralimni: c30 flying south along coast 21-Aug . In September passage numbers dropped considerably. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 25-Sep . Akhna Dam: up to five 3 & 9 Sep , one 17 & 20 Sep and six 21-Sep . Ayios Amvrosios: 20 on 3-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: three 2-Sep, two 5-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 2-Sep, up to three 16-24 Sep, with one 26-Sep to month end. Akrotiri Salt Lake one 19-29 Sep and two 30-Sep . Ayios Nikolaos: four moving southwest 24-Sep . 

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one 4-Sep and 26-30 Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 9-Sep . Akhna Dam: one 27-Sep. 

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber  

Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 26 on 14-Sep and 11 on 25-Sep . Davlos: 20 flying off the sea 11.10hrs on 3-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake: 2200 on 1-Sep, 3,480, including 639 juvs. 5-Sep, c760 on 20-Sep , 1400 on 30-Sep . Spiros Beach: 26 flew in from east, probably same as later seen at Sewage works. 26-Sep .

First autumn arrivals reported. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 20 & 24-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one male 25 & 27-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 30-Sep .

First birds of the season reported this month. Akhna Dam one 3-Sep . Larnaca Sewage Works: 104 on 3-Sep , c10 on 5-Sep, numbers increasing to 71 on 14-Sep and 94 on 25-Sep . Akhna Dam: one 8-Sep, increasing to nine 27-Sep .  Phasouri Reed-bed: 70 on 1-Sep , 13 on 17-Sep, 20 on 20-Sep, rising to 35 on 27-Sep .

Larnaca Sewage Works: c150 on 14-Aug , 100+ on 5-Sep, increased to 194 on 25-Sep . Akhna Dam: five 4-Sep, 18 on 15-Sep and up to 32 from 20-27 Sep. Zakaki Pools: two 12-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to 10 from 17-30 Sep. Athalassa: 50+ on 18-Sep . Akrotiri Salt Lake: 17 on 20-Sep. Ones and twos other sites.

Zakaki Marsh: one 2-Sep, two 17-Sep, seven 20-Sep , three 24 & 27 Sep . Lachi: c1100 floating in the bay on 10-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: three 12-Sep , six 17-Sep, nine 20-Sep , three 24-Sep  one only 30-Sep . Akhna Dam: five 15-Sep .

Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus  

This was the main month of passage for the species and it was one of the best for years ever with 5,923 birds reported, with apparently few duplications. There was a distinct peak from 8-10 Sep and a resurgence of passage from 24-30 Sep. The month’s high numbers started at Tsada with 62 on 2-Sep  and peaked at Phasouri Reed-beds with a spectacular 2680 on 9-Sep  when main passage occurred through Akrotiri. 

Reports of 5 birds or more were as follows: Zakaki: c10 on 2-Sep. Tsada Hills: 62 on 2-Sep , c50 on 8-Sep and 27 on 15-Sep . Armou Hills 33 on 4-Sep, 21 on 11-Sep, six on 14-Sep and 16 on 21-Sep . Akrotiri Salt Lake: 168 on 4-Sep, 28 on 6-Sep, c405 on 10-Sep, 23 on 11-Sep , 25 on 12-Sep , eight 25-Sep . Akrotiri area: c300 on 10-Sep , 460 on 24-Sep , 70 on 30-Sep , with 28 at Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 17-Sep, 12 at ‘Harrier Roost’ on 18-Sep  and 10 at the masts 20-Sep . At nearby RAF Akrotiri 28 were present 27-Sep, 18 on 28-Sep and 138 on 29-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: six 5-Sep, c220 on 8-Sep and c2680 in 26 flocks from 0857hrs to 1140hrs. 9-Sep , 13 on 11-Sep and 18 on 17-Sep . Akhna Dam: c50 on 6-Sep , seven 8-Sep . Noteworthy numbers reported: Akrotiri Salt Lake: one juv. 4-Sep , one 11 & 23-Sep (BB, JW), three 24-Sep and two 27-Sep . One at RAF Akrotiri 27-Sep may have been one of same birds and another 28-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: one 5 & 7-Sep and 3 juvs 8-Sep , 14 on 9-Sep , two 19-Sep  and five 30-Sep . Cape Gata: one 13-Sep . Yermasoyia Dam: 11 on 19-Sep . Aspro Pool: one 21-Sep . Akhna Dam: one 25-Sep . Mandria: two 26-27 Sep (BH, AMH) and another two en route Mandria to Trachypedoula 29-Sep . 

Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus  

Three birds reported of this rather scarce migrant. Phasouri Reed-beds: one juv. 9-Sep . One juv. was at RAF Akrotiri flying southwest at 13.54hrs 29-Sep and another juv. at Akrotiri Salt Lake landed in Harrier Roost on same day . 

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus 

Sightings are becoming more rare as only about a dozen birds remain. Tunnel Beach, Episkopi: 11 [13 reported by MM] roosting on same ledge with the Black Vulture 13-Sep . Kensington Cliffs: one 13-Sep . Dhiarizos Valley at Trachypedoula: 10 on 23-Sep, eight 26-Sep .

Tunnel Beach: one 13-Sep. Trachypedoula: one 23-Sep . 

Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus  

Above average number of reports this year; Phasouri Reed-beds: one 9-Sep . Kouklia, Secret Valley junction: one 17-Sep. Akrotiri: one flying south 27-Sep . Arminou Dam: one 27-Sep  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus 

Phasouri Reed-beds: up to 12 on 5-Sep, six 7-Sep  [probably same as those reported at harrier roost, below], 28 on 8-Sep, 14 on 11-Sep , up to seven 12-17 Sep, four 20-Sep , three 27-Sep . Zakaki Marsh: two 5-Sep. Harrier Roost. Akrotiri: 15, including 1 shot, 6-Sep, six 7-Sep , up to 10 from 8-11 Sep , five 20-Sep . Mandria: 12 on 14-Sep, five 23-Sep  and 11 on 26-Sep . Akrotiri Salt Lake: five 10-Sep, eight 29-Sep  and 20 in the area 30-Sep . Phasouri and Akrotiri: 24 on 24-Sep and 21 on 27 Sep . Mandria to Trachypedoula: nine 26-Sep and 11 on 29-Sep . Ones and twos reported Akhna Dam, Cape Arnaouti, Oroklini Marsh, RAF Akrotiri, Tsada Hills, Armou Hills and Ayios Nikolaos. 

Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus  

These singles were reported rather early in the season and confirmation would be welcome: Akhna Dam on 4-Sep, Cape Greco on 5-Sep, Harrier Roost on 10-Sep, Akrotiri Salt Lake on 16-Sep, Zygi on 18-Sep, Kiti Dam on 26-Sep and Meneou Pools on 26-Sep.

Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv. 7-Sep. Harrier Roost: two juv. 11-Sep, one juv. 18-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: four juv. 11-Sep, with one 17 & 25 Sep. Kiti Dam: eight 13-Sep . Akrotiri Salt Lake: one 19-Sep . 

Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus 

Steady passage, mostly singles, throughout the month. Akanthou: one 3-Sep. Akrotiri Gravel Pits: single juvs. 4 & 25-Sep  and two 27-Sep . Akrotiri Masts: one 1cy on 5-Sep . Akrotiri Harrier Roost: one juv. 8-Sep, two juvs. 18-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: one juv. 4, 5, 11 & 27-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 1cy on 11-Sep, one ad. male 24-Sep . Zakaki Pools: one male and one juv. 17-Sep. Mandria to Aspro pools: 2 juvs. 26-Sep and one to 29-Sep . Mandria: one 1cy 26-Sep . Trachypedoula: one juv. 29-Sep .

Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus  

A few interesting reports: Phasouri Reed-beds: 2 dark-, 1 pale-phase 9-Sep , 1 dark-, 1 pale-phase (probable juvs.) 30-Sep . Akrotiri Salt Lake: one 12-Sep . Cape Greco: one 19-Sep . Trachypedoula: one dark-phase 26-Sep . 

Bonelli’s Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus  

The following, assumed local resident birds, reported: Tsada Hills: at least two adults 2-Sep , one killed a Kestrel 22-Sep , two juvs. 27-Sep . Akrotiri Salt Lake: one juv. 18-Sep . Aspro Pools: one 19 & 26-Sep. Chrysochou: one 22-Sep . Dhiarizos Valley, Trachypedoula: one 26-Sep and 2 ads., one juv 29-Sep . Drouseia: one 28-Sep . 

Osprey Pandion haliaetus  

A good passage this year; compared to only 7 reports during the whole of 2004, at least 15 birds were seen this month. Strakka: one 4-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds 1 juv 4 & 5-Sep , one adult 7-Sep , four 9-Sep , one 17-Sep, one 20-Sep . Harrier Roost: one adult 6-Sep , may be same bird as reported at Phasouri Reed-beds the following day. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 7-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 8-Sep , one 25-Sep . Mandria: one 26-Sep. RAF Akrotiri: one juv. 29-Sep . 

Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni  

Never common, though possibly overlooked due to abundance of (Common) Kestrel in Cyprus. Phasouri Reed-beds: two male, one fem. 9-Sep . Harrier Roost: one fem. 18-Sep . Lady’s Mile: one adult male with Red-foots on 27-Sep . 

Kestrel Falco tinnunculus  

Very common resident and many seen on passage. Max. numbers reported: Davlos, north coast: four 3-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: four 30-Sep. Mandria: up to five 6-23 Sep. Akrotiri: a max. 35 reported on 27-Sep . 

Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus  

Main passage built up from 24-Sep, peaking on 26-Sep (see chart).

Earliest records included one at Tsada Hills 2-Sep , two at Phasouri Reed-beds 5-Sep, two fem. at Phasouri Reed-beds 5-Sep and one at the Akrotiri Harrier Roost  on 6-Sep . The main influx commenced with nine at the Harrier Roost on 18-Sep  and two in the hills above Armou on 19-Sep . The next few days saw an influx all over the island with eight at Mandria 23-Sep , 30 between Pentagomo-Governor's Beach on 23-Sep , 25 at Zygi on 24-Sep , 210 at Akrotiri on 24-Sep , 26 at Meneou Pools 24-Sep, Zakaki, near port: eight 24-Sep and 37 at Akhna Dam on 25-Sep .

Large numbers reported at following sites: Mandria: 199+ on 26-Sep , 75 on 26-Sep , 28 on 27-Sep  and up to 60 there to month end. Meneou Pools: four 26-Sep . Episkopi bay: 22 on 25-Sep. Mazotos: two 26-Sep , plus seven near ‘Pouzis’ river . Phasouri Reed-beds: two 26-Sep , 50 on 30-Sep . Episkopi, M1: c85 on 26-Sep . Akhna Dam: 63 on 27-Sep. RAF Akrotiri: 18 on 27-Sep . Asprokremnos Dam: one 21-Sep . Lythrodontas: one 14-Sep. Akrotiri: one 19-Sep. Tamassos dam: one 21-Sep . Mandria – Trachypedoula: six 23-Sep, seven 29-Sep . Tsada Hills: one 23-Sep . Akrotiri – Phasouri: eight 24 & 27-Sep . Near Kathikas: five 28-Sep . Koili Track: seen daily, with max. four 28-Sep . 

Eleonora’s Falcon Falco eleonorae 

The Eleonora's Falcon Breeding Site Survey: from Petra tou Romiou to Cape Gata, 236 falcons, 104 nests counted on 13-Sep.

Fairly widely reported, mostly in groups of 10-16 birds. Max. numbers: Mandria, 26 on 6-Sep ; Armou Hills, 38 on 19-Sep ; Oroklini Marsh, 25 on 10-Sep . 

Black Francolin Francolinus francolinus  

Up to four Phasouri Reed-beds 5-27 Sep, three at Akrotiri Harrier Roost 10-Sep and 10 at Oroklini Marsh 20-Sep were the most noteworthy reports. Also seen or heard at Mandria, Stavros tis Psokas valley, Agios Minas and Akhna Dam.

Corncrake Crex crex  

An extraordinary event occurred, when one landed on the balcony of Paphos town home at 8.30pm on 5-Sep. It appeared wounded or exhausted and was kept safe overnight, then released at Kannaviou Dam on 6-Sep .

Akhna Dam: present all month with a max. seven on 20-Sep . Zakaki Marsh: nine on 1-Sep, increasing steadily, with 27 on 12-Sep , 47 on 17-Sep and 53 on 20-Sep . Lymbia dam: six 20-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: max. 24 on 20-Sep . Bishops Pool: seven 20-Sep . Athalassa: up to six throughout Sep . Up to five together reported at Acheleia Bridge, Mazotos, Kannaviou Dam, Larnaca Sewage Works, Aspro Pools and Saittas Dam.

Akhna Dam: numbers fluctuated, with 34 on 4-Sep, five 8-Sep, two 20-Sep  and 11 on 23-Sep . Zakaki Pools: 31 on 12-Sep, 42 on 17-Sep, 45 on 20-Sep and 48 on 27-Sep . Panagra Dam: four 20-Sep. Lymbia dam: four 20-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: 52 on 1-Sep , 93 on 20-Sep . Aspro Pools one 27-Sep .

Archangelos: heard flying over at 5am on 31-Aug . Akrotiri Salt Lake: nine, including 2 juv. on 1-Sep, 31 on 2-Sep , two 5-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: four flying west 9.35am 4-Sep.  Nicosia: c30 at 8.15am on 5-Sep. There was an unconfirmed report of c500 in 3 skeins flying over Kamares near Paphos at low cloud level towards Akrotiri on ‘about the 4 Sep’ .  

Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus  

Rather localised with reports from only 4 sites, before most birds moved on. Larnaca Sewage Works: 11 on 14-Aug, nine 16-Aug , declining to three 3-Sep  and two by two 25-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds 12 on 1-Sep , was the last report. Akhna Dam: one 4 & 8-Sep , with three 6-Sep . Zakaki pond: six 1-Sep , declining to four 2-12 Sep and three from 20-24 Sep.

Mandria four 6-Sep , up to 21 from 19-21 Sep. Larnaca Salt Lake: a very noteworthy 230 on 3-Sep  and 54 at nearby Larnaca Airport pools 24-Sep . Phasouri Reed-beds: 12 flying west 27-Sep .
