Bogazi:17 on 14-Nov. Lady’s Mile: up to six from 14-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: 20 on 3-Nov, increasing to 135 from 15-27 Nov. Less than six, Akhna Dam, Aloupos Dam, Asprokremmos Dam, Bishops Pool and Mandria.

SHAG Phalacrocorax aristotelis

Largest numbers as follows: Boghazi: 12 on 18-Nov. Cape Andreas: five 18-Nov. Mandria: seen most days on the rocky islets with a max. nine 2-Nov. Spiro's Beach: up to five loafing on buoys most days, with max. nine 3-Nov. Small er numbers seen at Episkopi Garrison cliffs, Potamos Leopetri, Lady's Mile and Timi beach.

Akrotiri salt lake: one first-winter 9-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: four at Meneou Pools from 17-Nov, then at sewage pools 19-27-Nov. Orphani Salt Lake: one juv 15-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: one very weak juv. 22-23-Nov.

Akhna Dam: max. five 16-Nov, six 30-Nov. Lady’s Mile: up to 12 at offshore fish farm all month. Larnaca Sewage Works: best numbers, 11 on 3-Nov, 20 on 15-Nov, 26 on 27-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: best counts, 22 on 4-Nov, 35 on 22-Nov. Up to four birds reported at Aloupos Dam, Lakatameia, Fresh Water Lake, Ayios Nikolaos, Evretou reservoir and Oroklini Marsh.

PURPLE HERON Ardea purpurea

Oroklini Marsh: one juv. 24-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: one imm. present 2-22 Nov.

BLACK STORK Ciconia nigra

Phasouri Reed-beds: three 20-Nov, was an interesting report.

SPOONBILL Platalea leucorodia

Akhna Dam: two 2-12 Nov, one 24-Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (South): three 15-Nov, one 21-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: two at Meneou Pools 12-Nov, up to four at the sewage pools 5-19 Nov.

Akrotiri Salt Lake: some good counts made: 2360 on 7-Nov, c2500 on 13-Nov, 2200 counted on 22-Nov, c2400 on 29-Nov. Aloupos (Akdeniz) Dam: one 18-Nov. Ampelia Forest, Famagousta: 24 flying north 12-Nov. Lady’s Mile: one 4 & 29-Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (North): 1500 on 7-Nov, decling to 24 on 27-Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (South): 345 on 15-Nov, c300 on 21-Nov. Larnaca Salt Lake: 770 on 3-Nov, declining to 101 on 15-Nov and 31 on 27-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: 12 on 10-Nov. Meneou Pools: c150 on 10-Nov. Meneou Pools: c350 on 12-Nov, c423 on 17-Nov, 84 on 27-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: four 20-Nov, increasing to 27 on 26-Nov.

WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE Anser albifrons

Larnaca Sewage Works: two from 3-Nov, three 12-17 Nov, six 21-26 Nov with seven 27-Nov.

COMMON SHELDUCK Tadorna tadorna

Akrotiri Salt Lake: 32 on 29-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one from 15-27 Nov, plus one dead 26-Nov.

WIGEON Anas penelope

Only found at one site: Larnaca Sewage Works: six 3-Nov, 12 on 15-Nov, with 27 on 27-Nov.

GADWALL Anas strepera

Fresh Water Lake (South): one female 20-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: at least one from 3-Nov to month end, with two 27-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: four 4-Nov, one 13-Nov, two 22-Nov.

TEAL Anas crecca

Very common and quite widespread, with the main influx mid-month. Max. numbers at following sites: Aloupos Dam: 28 on 18-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): max. 76 on 6-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: 111 on 3-Nov, increasing steadily, 266 on 15-Nov, 378 on 27-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: 12 on 3-Nov, 181 from 16-24-Nov and up to 200 on 21 & 22-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: c40 on 4-Nov, 170 on 13-Nov, 190 on 22-Nov. Up to 10 birds seen at Akhna Dam, Akhna Dam, Aspro Pools, Bishop’s Pool, Evretou Dam, Evretou reservoir and Paphos Sewage Plant and up to 20 at Zakaki Marsh 4-25 Nov.

MALLARD Anas platyrhynchos

Fairly common,mostly resident birds. Aloupos Dam: 40 on 18-Nov. Phinikas: c48 on 26-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: 114 on 3-Nov, 190 on 15-Nov, 181 on 27-Nov. Less than 20 at other sites.

PINTAIL Anas acuta

Aspro Pools: one 29-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): four 20-Nov.
Larnaca Airport Pools (North): max. 13 on 7-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: two 28-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 1-Nov, up to 15 from 13-25 Nov. Zakaki Marsh: two 4-Nov, six 14-Nov, max. 32 on 22-Nov.

GARGANEY Anas querquedula

Akhna Dam: two 2-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 15-19 Nov.

SHOVELER Anas clypeata

Akhna Dam: one 2-Nov The main site was Larnaca Sewage Works, with 81 on 3-Nov, 207 on 15-Nov, c350 on 21-Nov and 517 on 27-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: 14 on 3-Nov, max. 80 on 8-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: nine 13-Nov, up to 26 from 19-24 Nov. Less than 10 at other sites.

Pochard Aythya ferina  

Akhna Dam: one male 30-Nov. Bishop’s Pool: one 20-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): two 20-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 3-Nov, 20 on 21-Nov, five 27-Nov, fewer at other times.

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca  

A few interesting sightings: Zakaki: one male 1-Nov. Akhna Dam: one male 9-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 5-7 & 27-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to four seen by most observers all month with seven 25-Nov.  

BLACK KITE Milvus migrans  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one 7-Nov.  

Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one probable 22-Nov. Interestingly on the same day, one Anoyira 22-Nov.  

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus  

Anoyira Village, 2km radius: one 1.5km south of village 13-Nov, four 1km north of village 14-Nov, two 15-Nov, one 22-Nov. Kensington Cliffs: 14 on 6 & 16-Nov,, six (two with tags) 10-Nov, seven in air 13-Nov. Kidasi: two distant north-west 29-Nov.  

Black Vulture Aegypius monachus  

Seen all month by several observers at Kensington Cliffs.  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus  

Aspro pools: one juv. with spotted uppers present from 5-Nov to month end. Akrotiri Salt Lake : four 7-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to three from 4-Nov to month end, with six 22-Nov. One in Polis-Crysouchou Valley 9-Nov, was unusual. Ones and twos regular at Larnaca Sewage Works, Zakaki Marsh and other sites.  

Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus  

Akrotiri roost: nine (including 2 male) 7-Nov. Mandria: two including a male 8-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one male 10-Nov. Tsada Hills: one male 11-Nov. Orphani ( Larnaca Airport south pools?) Salt Lake: three, including a male 15-Nov. Otherwise single ‘ringtails’, mostly females, seen all month at Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Armou Hills, Ayios Nikolaos, Goudhi, Larnaca Sewage Works, Mandria, Polemi, Paphos Sewage Plant, Phasouri Reed-beds and Skoulli.  

Harrier sp. 

Asprokremnos Dam: two distant 28-Nov. Cape Kormakiti: one distant over the sea, possibly on passage, 18-Nov.  

Goshawk Accipiter gentilis 

Akrotiri: one 11-Nov. Kalo Khorio Klirou: one seen regularly feeding on home pigeons 1-30-Nov. Kannaviou Dam: one 8-Nov.  

EURASIAN Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus  

Good numbers reported. Akhna Dam: one 2-Nov. Akrotiri Village surrounding fields: one female 4-Nov. Aloupos Dam: one 18-Nov. Anoyira Village: one 1.5km south of village 19-Nov. Aspro Pools: one 8, 18 & 25-Nov. Ayios Nikolaos: one 14, 20 & 28-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): two 6 & 20-Nov. Kalo Khorio Klirou: one 26-Nov. Kiti Dam: one 10-Nov. Mandria: one 21-Nov. Marathounta: one flew into home window 27-Nov. Pachna Village: one 2km north of village 25-Nov. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 16 & 23-Nov. Pentadactylos: one fem. 25-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 13-Nov. Tsada Track: one 19-Nov. Agia Varvara: one 28-Nov.  

Common Buzzard Buteo buteo  

A healthy influx of winter visitors this month, shown by interesting passage movement in east on 6th.. Akhna Dam: one 16-30 Nov.Anarita (army base area): one 12-Nov. Armou Hills: one dark phase 8-Nov. Aspro Pools: at least one 8-26 Nov, up to three 18-25-Nov. Ayios Nikolaos: one 20-26 Nov. Ezousas Valley: one 13-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): 18 moving southwest 09:00-09:45 on 6-Nov. Kouklia: one 21-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one most days 5-27-Nov, with two 12-Nov. Mandria: one 18-Nov. Lemona: one 20-Nov. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 6-Nov, two 8-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to two 11-24-Nov. Polis Crysouchou Valley: one 9-Nov. Skoulli: one 8-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: one 22-Nov.

Anarita Park: one 28-Nov.Aspro Dam Pools: one one 6-8 Nov. Ayios Nikolaos: one moving southeast 28-Nov.Evretou reservoir: one 30-Nov. Koilinia: one juv 19-Nov. Lemona: one 20-Nov. Polemi: two 24-Nov.Phassouri Reed Beds: one 2-Nov.Pissouri Village: one 19-Nov.Polis-Chrysouchou Valley: two 9-Nov. Tsada area: one 19, 27 & 29-Nov. Giolou north: one 8-Nov.  

BOOTED EAGLE Hieraaetus pennatus  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one pale phase 7-Nov.  

Bonelli’s Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus 

Armou Hills: one imm. 8-Nov. Goudhi: two 9-Nov. Tsada Track: two 10-Nov. Vrecha: two 19-Nov.  

Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni  

A couple of very late birds reported. Mandria (Paphos): one perched, 6-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: one male 4-Nov.  

COMMON Kestrel Falco tinnunculus  

Some interesting reports of large groups reported: Anarita (army base area): 12+ flock hunting insects 12-Nov. Avdimou Beach: 12-15 flycatching, 20-Nov. Paphos Airport plain: 10 on 1-Nov.  

Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus  

This migrant species was also reported much later than usual on Akrotiri Peninsula . Akrotiri: eight on wires by Kolossi-Akrotiri road at citrus groves 4-14-Nov. M1 Bridge: one juv. on wires 13-Nov. Phasouri Reed Beds: four 1-Nov, two 2-Nov, six 4-Nov. Trachoni: one juv. on wires 13-Nov.  

Merlin Falco columbarius  

Oroklini Marsh: one 27-Nov, was the only report.  

Hobby Falco subbuteo  

A few late birds seen: Phasouri Reed-beds: one 22-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: one imm. 4-Nov.  

Eleonora’s Falcon Falco eleonorae  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one probably this species 4-Nov.  

Lanner FALCON Falco biarmicus  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one first-winter 12-Nov, subject to report and acceptance.

Saker FALCON Falco cherrug  

Akrotiri salt lake: one ad. 6-Nov.  

Peregrine FALCON Falco peregrinus   

Many singles reported, at Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Ampelia, Anarita, Aspro pools, Episkopi (Paphos), Fresh Water Lake, Kantara, Lady's Mile, Paphos Airport/Mandria fields, Pentadactylos, Souni and Zakaki football field. Phasouri Reed Bed: one seen on several days 2-23-Nov. Mandria: one in field at ‘lark corner’ from 8-Nov to month end. Cape Andreas : two 18-Nov.  Larnaca Sewage Works: one present most visitis 3-26 Nov.  

Chukar Alectoris chukar  

Parties of up to 10-20 birds seen at Anarita, Armou Hills, Aspro Pools, Ayios Nikolaos, Ayios Philonas, Cape Andreas, Galinoporni, Lakatameia, Manglis Lake, Mandria, Oroklini Marsh and Trikomo.

All reports are listed, of this elusive resident. Acheleia: one female 2-Nov. Akhna Dam: three calling 2-Nov. Lakatameia: one Manglis Lake 21-Nov. Larnaca: one Rizoelia roundabout 30-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: up to two most visits 2-18 Nov. Paphos Sewage Plant: one male 11-Nov. Polis: one heard 2-Nov. Choletria: one upstream from ford 4-Nov.  

Quail Coturnix coturnix  

Akhna Dam: one 17-Nov. Ayia Marina : one 20-Nov. Ayia Napa sewage works: one 30-Nov.Marathounta: two, flew up twice, 17-Nov. Akhna Dam: one 25-Nov.  

Water Rail Rallus aquaticus  

Anarita Park: one 30-Nov. Aspro Pools: at least one heard or seen 18-28 Nov. Avgas Gorge Area: one 4-Nov. Fresh Water Lake: one 20-Nov. Phasouri Reedbeds: one seen, one more heard only 4-Nov, heard only 12-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: up to two 25-29 Nov.  

Spotted Crake Porzana porzana  

Oroklini Marsh: one 12-Nov, was a good discovery.  

Moorhen Gallinula chloropus  

Akhna Dam: max. 12 on 9-Nov, two or three at other times. Aloupos Dam: nine 18-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): 41 on 6-Nov, 45 on 20-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: up to eight all month. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to 12 all month. Zakaki Marsh: up to 20 all month. Fewer at other sites.  

Coot Fulica atra  

Best counts follow: Akhna Dam: 39 on 2-Nov, increasing to 127 on 16-Nov and 236 on 30-Nov. Aloupos (Akdeniz) Dam: 120 on 18-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): 61 on 20-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: 207 on 3-Nov, 228 on 27-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: max. 101 on 27-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: max. 88 on 24-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: max. 291 on 22-Nov. Smaller numbers at other times and other sites.  

Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus 

The only report was of one at Fresh Water Lake south 20-Nov.

Meneou Pools: one 5-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 12-15 Nov.  

Stone Curlew Burhinus oedicnemus  

Acheleia olive grove: 12 on 6-Nov. Ampelia: 14 flying north 14-Nov. Ayios Nikolaos: max. 51 on 14-Nov, with up to nine 20 & 28-Nov. Larnaka Salt Lakes (Airport North Pool): c60+ on 6-Nov. Meneou Pools: 31 on 17-Nov.  

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius  

Akhna Dam: two 2-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: two 3-Nov, were the only sightings.

Present all month, with max. seven 16-Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (North): up to 10 on 3-15 Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (South): six 27-Nov. Meneou Pools: six 27-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: max. eight 21-Nov.  

Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus 

Larnaca Airport Pools (North): max. 41 on 7-Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (South): max. 96 on 27-Nov. Larnaca Salt Lake : max. 262 on 15-Nov. Up to five Akhna Dam, Ampelia, Potamos Leopetri, Kermia Beach and Lady's Mile.  

Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii  

Ayia Thekla: one 18-27-Nov. Kermia Beach: five 21-Nov. Paphos Lighthouse: two 4-Nov. Potamos Leopetri: one 21-Nov.  

European Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria  

Akrotiri: 90-100 on 9-Nov, 30 on 12-Nov. Ayios Nikolaos: two 14-Nov, increasing to 32 on 28-Nov. Field SW of Larnaka Airport: 42+ on 6-Nov, max. c50 on 10-Nov, with up to 16 from 12-21 Nov. Mandria: one 2-6 Nov, up to 31 from 14-26 Nov. Paphos Lighthouse: 23 on 7-Nov. Salamis : 412+ on 12-Nov, 72+ on 16-Nov. Cape Kormakiti: 20 on 18-Nov.  

GREY PLOVER Pluvialis squatarola 

Larnaca Airport Coast: one 10-Nov.  

Spur-winged Plover Vanellus spinosus  

Akhna Dam: up to 11 to mid-month, with up to 21 from 25-30-Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): max. 68 on 6-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: two 4-21-Nov, with four 10-Nov. Paphos Sewage Plant: at least all month, with six 11-Nov.  

NORTHERN Lapwing Vanellus vanellus  

Asprokremnos Dam: 17 on 28-Nov. Ayia Napa Sewage Works: two 21-Nov. Ayios Nikolaos: up to 10 from 14-28 Nov. Fresh Water Lake (South): four 6-Nov, one 20-Nov. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to three 15-26 Nov. Mandria: up to 18 from 2-6 Nov, one 8-21-Nov, five 26-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: four 3-Nov, max. 30 on 13-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: at least two 13-24 Nov, three 22-Nov. Salamis : 34 on 12-Nov. Zakaki Marsh: six on field trip 4-Nov

Akhna Dam: max. 13 on 9-Nov. Lady's Mile: max. six 22-Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (North): max. 61 on 15-Nov, 83 on 27-Nov. Larnaca Salt Lake : max. 67 on 3-Nov. Meneou Pools: 24 on 27-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: max. five 24-Nov. One or two other sites.  

Temminck’s Stint Calidris temminckii  

One was at Akhna Dam all month.  

Dunlin Calidris alpina  

Only reported at 5 sites: Akhna Dam: up to six 2-30 Nov. Lady’s Mile: up to 12 most of the month with 35 there 25-Nov. Larnaca Airport Pools (North): up to 85 on 7 & 15-Nov.  Larnaca Airport Pools (South): 146 on 27-Nov. Larnaca Salt Lake : up to 12 from 3-15 Nov. Meneou Pools: up to seven 13-27-Nov.

Larnaca Salt Lake : five 3-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: three 4-Nov.  

Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes minimus  

Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): one 14 & 20-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: one 15-Nov.

This winter visitor became locally abundant from the first week in November. Best counts follow: Akhna Dam: 29 on 9-Nov, max. 65 on 24-Nov. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): 44 on 5-Nov, 81 on 14-Nov. Mandria: 700 on 6-Nov, 220 on 18-Nov. Oroklini Marsh: 50 on 16-Nov. Tsada Track: 45 on 10-Nov.

Paphos Sewage Plant: present all month, one heard 6-Nov, six 8-Nov, 23 on 11-Nov, up to three to 23-Nov. Phasouri Reed-beds: one heard or seen most visits 4-22 Nov.
