Larnaca Sewage Works: Over 100 most visits, peaking at 141 on 11-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : 122 on 5-Sep. Phasouri Reed beds: max. c41 there 19-Sep. Zakaki Pool: up to 15 from 7-22 Sep. Fresh Water Lake : 75 on 21-Sep. Less than 10 at Aspro Pools, Akhna Dam, Ayia Napa Sewage Works and Kannaviou Dam.  

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis   

Larnaca Sewage Works: one from 4-Sep, five 13-28 Sep, with max. of eight present to month end.  

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis   

Up to three at Mandria, Paphos harbour and Cape Drepanum , with seven off Spiros Beach buoys 5-Sep onwards. Ayios Filonas: six 23-Sep. Kensington Cliffs: 15 on 10-Sep. Cape Zevgari , Akrotiri: seven 11-Sep. Cape Andreas : two 23-Sep. Kila Island , south Karpasia: four 24-Sep.  

White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus   

The escaped bird was present at Akhna Dam all month.  

Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus   

Zakaki Marsh: one was reported 3-Sep (BirdLine). Phasouri Reed-beds: six flushed at dusk 18-Sep.  

Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax  

Fresh Water (Ayios Loukas) Lake : two juvs. 5-Sep, one 21 & 22-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: four 9-Sep. Akhna Dam: two 11 & 18-Sep. Cape Greco Park: two juvs. migrating along coast 12-Sep.  

Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides  

Fresh Water Lake : four 5-Sep, three 21-Sep, one remaining 22-Sep. Phasouri Reed Bed: one 13 & 20-Sep. Aspro pools: one 14 & 20-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 29-Sep. 

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis  

Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): a regular movement was noted at sunset most evenings flying NE, with six 5-Sep, 10 on 8 & 10-Sep, 28 on 11-Sep and up to 12 from 15-28 Sep; nine flying SW at dawn, possibly from roost at Fresh Water Lake 22-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : only one 5 & 21-Sep. Phasouri Reed beds: at least one all month from 5-Sep, two 9-Sep  and 23 on 10-Sep. Ayia Napa Sewage Pools: two 12-Sep. Baths of Aphrodite: 10 on 15-Sep. Lady's Mile: one 22-Sep. Fields SE of Akhna Dam: three 23-Sep. 

Little Egret Egretta garzetta    

Ayios Epitikos, Kyrenia: 200 over sea, heading west 3-Sep. Athalassa: 15 on 3-Sep, 17 on 9-Sep, and 28 on 17-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 16 from 4-11 Sep,  17 on 17-Sep and 22 on 28-Sep. Fresh Water Lake: 27 on 5-Sep, 21 on 21-Sep and 14 on 22-Sep. Baths of Aphrodite: c60 on 14-Sep. Akhna Dam: 26 on 28-Sep. Up to 10 several other sites.  

Great White Egret Egretta alba  

Zakaki Marsh: one at least 3-11 Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 18-25 Sep. Akhna Dam: three 28-29 Sep.  

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea    

A massive movement was witnessed on the north side of the island on 3-Sep. Latchi: 922 in 7 flocks seen moving steadily 12.30-1755 on 3-Sep. Ayios Epitikos, Kyrenia: 400 over sea, heading west 3-Sep. Chrysochou Bay : 100+ on 3-Sep. Polis Camp Site : 200+ on 3-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: 24 on 4 & 17-Sep, otherwise up to 55 from 11-28 Sep. Zakaki Pool: 18 on 7-Sep, up to 25 on 9-28 Sep. Baths of Aphrodite: c50 on 15-Sep. Latchi: 19 on 16-Sep. Akhna Dam: 10 on 22-Sep. Less than 10 regular.  

Purple Heron Ardea purpurea   

Only common on passage off the north coast. All records listed: Ayios Epitikos, Kyrenia: 600 over sea, heading west 3-Sep. Paphos: two heading west 5-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one imm. most visits 5-20 Sep, Cape Arnaouti : one 9-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: one juv. 11 & 20-Sep. Ayia Napa Sewage Pools: 12 migrating south 16-Sep. Latchi: one 16-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 23-Sep Livana Hotel, Rizokarpaso: three 7am 24-Sep. Baths of Aphrodite: 12 on 28-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 28-Sep.  

Black Stork Ciconia nigra  

Akhna Dam: one 14-Sep, first seen by A Kephalas previous day.  

White Stork Ciconia ciconia  

This year saw a relatively large influx, especially at Paphos. Paphos Sewage Works: 68 spiralled over on 7-Sep, with 17 still present later in the day, 30 on 8-Sep  with 10 remaining 15-Sep, three 22-Sep  and 32 on 25-Sep. Geroskipou Plains (some may refer to same birds, above): two 8-Sep, 50 on 9-Sep, 10 on 11-Sep, five 13-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake : 21 on 12-Sep. Baths of Aphrodite: 30 on 14-Sep. Akhna Dam: three 23-27 Sep.  

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus  

Ayios Epitikos, Kyrenia: 250 over sea, heading west 3-Sep. Latchi: seven 3-Sep. Akhna Dam: one from 4-Sep all month. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 4-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : one 5-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: one from 7-Sep, two from 28-Sep to month end. Zakaki Marsh: six 12-Sep. Akrotiri Gravel Pits: one 27-Sep. Phasouri Reed Beds: one from 8-Sep to month end. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 28-Sep  

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia   

Larnaca Sewage Works: one 7-11Sep - one at Meneou Pool East 9-Sep may have been same bird - then at least 29 from 12-25 Sep, 35 on 13-Sep, 51 on 17-Sep  and up to eight 28-30 Sep.  

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber  

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 28 were present most visits from 4-28 Sep. Akhna Dam: one juv. 5-Sep. Akrotiri: three 21-Sep  and 110+ on 24-Sep.

Wigeon Anas penelope

Zakaki Marsh: one ♀ 22-Sep.

Teal Anas crecca

Larnaca Sewage Works: eight 4-Sep, up to 13 from 11-28-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : 33 on 5-Sep, 51 on 21-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: 20+ from 5-Sep, up to c85 from 19-21 Sep. Aspro pools: one 7-18 Sep. Athalassa: four 17-Sep. Akhna Dam: two 24-Sep, three 28-Sep.  

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos  

Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 216 from 4-28 Sep. Fresh Water Lake : 31 on 5-Sep. Less than 20 present, probably resident at Akhna Dam, Phasouri Reed beds, Zakaki Marsh and Phinikas.  

Pintail Anas acuta  

Phasouri Reed Bed: three 13-20 Sep and up to seven 21-Sep to month end. Zakaki Marsh: one 28-Sep.  

Garganey Anas querquedula   

Aspro pools: four 2-Sep. Ayios Epitikos, Kyrenia: 150 over sea, heading west 3-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: six 5-Sep, five 7-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: two 7-Sep. Latchi: c30 flying offshore 16-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : two 22-Sep. Single birds also reported.  

Shoveler Anas clypeata  

Larnaca Sewage Works: numbers rose quickly, from 36 on 4-Sep, 104 on 11-Sep and 183 on 28-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : 16 on 5-Sep, six 21-22 Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: 10 on 5-Sep, 20 on 7-Sep  and up to three 18-21 Sep.  

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca  

Phasouri Reed beds: up to five birds showed elusively until at least 19-Sep.  

Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus   

This month saw the main passage of this species. Full-time observations at the Akrotiri Information Centre recorded 4,747 birds from 1-26-Sep, with c600 from 8.15h to 11.30h on 3-Sep, when the largest passage occurred, 108 from 8.15h to 10.30h on 4-Sep  and 262 in 12 flocks, 9.50 - 11.30h on 5-Sep, 122 on 7-Sep, at least 155 on 9-Sep, six 17-Sep, 16 20-Sep  and 47+ on 21-Sep  [these figures are incomplete]. One doing 'wing shivering' display over Akrotiri Gravel Pits on 2-Sep. Ayios Epitikos, Kyrenia: 800 were seen over the sea, heading west 3-Sep. Cape Greco : 32 on 5-Sep. Tsada Hills: 15 on 5-Sep, 73 in four groups on 6-Sep, 21 on 7-Sep, 25 on 8-Sep, three 13-Sep, c30 on 17-Sep  and three 21-Sep. Phasouri Reed beds: 30+ on 5-Sep,  singles 7 &9-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: one 7-Sep. Ezousas Valley , Episkopi: eight 14-Sep. Latchi: 32 on 16-Sep. Mandria: 15 on 17-Sep. Marathounta: two 19-Sep. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): one 20-Sep. Blue Sea Hotel, Rizokarpaso: one perched 23-Sep. Big Sand (Hasan's) Beach: one 24-Sep.  

Black Kite Milvus migrans   

It was another record year for the species. with 97 reported compared to 99 in September 2005. Akrotiri Information Centre: 84 were seen over the period 1-26-Sep, with top known counts of eight 9-Sep, four 12-Sep, three 13-Sep and four 18-Sep. Ayia Napa Tip: one 1-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 3 & 24-Sep, two 9-Sep. Tsada Hills: one 7-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 8 & 16-Sep. Bishop's Pool: one 15-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : one sitting 22-Sep. Karpas - Cape Andreas : two 23-Sep. Mandria: one 28-Sep.  

Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus  

Akrotiri Information Centre: three 1-26-Sep.  

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus  

Kensington Cliffs: up to six most days 5-18 Sep. Vretsia Cliffs: a very noteworthy 11 on 30-Sep.  

Black Vulture Aegypius monachus  

Vretsia Cliffs: one 30-Sep, was the month’s only report.  

Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus   

Akrotiri Information Centre: eight seen 1-26-Se, two 13-Sep.  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus   

804 were counted in September 2005. Akrotiri Information Centre: 546 were counted at Akrotiri alone 1-26-Sep. Other noteworthy counts show main passage occurred 15-19 Sep. Max. numbers follow: Akrotiri Salt Lake : four 7-Sep. Phasouri Reed Beds: up to three most visits, with four 8-Sep  and five 22-Sep. Ayios Yeronisos Church , Akrotiri: four 11-Sep. Tsada Hills: three juvs. 15-Sep. Mandria: seven all coming to ground in same field 17-Sep. Akrotiri Roost: four 20-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: three 29-Sep.  

Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus   

20 counted compared to 21 in September 2005. Akrotiri Information Centre: 12 were counted 1-26-Sep. Cape Greco Park : 1 ♂ 12-Sep. Paphos Sewage Works: two Including 1♂ 17-Sep. Ayios Terissima: one juv. 22-Sep. Akhna Dam: one ♂ 24-Sep, Akhna Dam: 2+ juvs 28-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv. 25-Sep.  

Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus   

24 were recorded in September 2005. Akrotiri Information Centre: a noteworthy 49 were tallied 1-26-Sep, plus the following: Phasouri Reed-beds: singles 3, 9  15-Sep. Paphos Headland: one ringtail 8-Sep. Ezousa river mouth: one juv. 9-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake : two 10-Sep. Akhna Dam area: one 11 & 23-Sep. Germasogeia Dam: one juv 14-Sep. Ayia Napa Sewage Works: one 15-Sep. Paphos Sewage Works: two 17-Sep.  

Unidentified ring-tailed harriers:   

60 were seen from the Akrotiri Information Centre 1-26-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: one high up 17-Sep. Statos-Agios Fotios: one juv 24-Sep. Fort Bravo : one 9-Sep. Avgourou Area: one 17-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 17-Sep.

Akrotiri Information Centre: seven were seen from 1-26-Sep. Armou-Tsada Track: one 3-Sep. Phasouri Reed beds: one 19-Sep. Akrotiri Marshes: two 22-Sep.  

Common Buzzard Buteo buteo   

Akrotiri Information Centre: 22 were reported from 1-26-Sep. Strovolos: two 18-Sep.  

Steppe Buzzard B.b.vulpinus   

Akrotiri Information Centre: six from 1-26-Sep. Tsada Hills: one 15-Sep. Marathounta: two 27-Sep, three 28-Sep, two 29-Sep.  

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus  

Akrotiri Information Centre: three seen during period 1-26-Sep. Armou -Tsada area: up to two seen on most visits all month, with three 7, 9 & 29-Sep. Aspro pools: one 2 & 6-Sep. Cape Greco : one 5-Sep. Kidasi: one just north village 6-Sep. Koilinia: up to two 10, 17 & 23 Sep and one at nearby Pentalia 24-Sep. Armenochori Area: one medium phase 14-Sep. Ezousas Valley , Episkopi: two 14-Sep. Cape Andreas: one 23-Sep. Larnaca Salt Lake : one 25-Sep. Kritou Terra: one juv, 27-Sep.

Akrotiri Information Centre: 14 seen from 1-26-Sep, including one dark-morph 7-Sep, two 13-Sep and two dark-phase 20-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 27-Sep.

Ezousas Valley , Episkopi: two ads. 1-Sep Tsada Hills: two ads. 8-Sep. Akrotiri Information Centre: one 10-Sep. Curium Stadium area: two singles between 15.00h – 16.30h on 11-Sep  Akhna Dam: one 18-Sep. Marathounta: two juvs. 27-Sep.  

Osprey Pandion haliaetus  

Akrotiri Information Centre: 19 seen from 1-26-Sep, including two at Akrotiri forest 10-Sep and one at Akrotiri Salt Lake 12-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 4 & 18-Sep and two there 25 & 30-Sep. Ayia Napa Sewage Pools: one 10-Sep. Tekke mosque: one 13-Sep. Akhna Dam: two 15 & 19-Sep, 1 juv 16 & 17-Sep. Mandria: one 17-Sep. Avgourou: four 27-Sep.  

Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni   

The numbers seen were higher than the total of 39 birds recorded in autumn 2005.

Akrotiri Information Centre: 49 counted from 1-26-Sep. Akhna Dam: two 18-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one juv 24-Sep. Amathus: two females 27-Sep. Marathounta: one with buzzards 29-Sep.

Pairs and groups of up to four birds were commonly reported throughout.

Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus   

There were good numbers, peaking in late September. Akrotiri Information Centre: 296 birds counted from 1-26-Sep. Largest numbers are noted here: Mandria: 53 on 18-Sep, 74 on 28-Sep. Cape Andreas: 10+ on 23-Sep. Marathounta: c10 speeding through on west wind 28-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: 28 on 29-Sep. Up to five birds regular.

Ayia Napa Sewage Works: two 5-Sep. Akrotiri Information Centre: one 18-Sep.

Akrotiri Information Centre: 17 counted from 1-26-Sep, probably includes four 4-Sep  and one 12-Sep. Anarita Park : one 1-Sep. Phasouri Reed beds: up to seen most days 5-10 Sep and one 24-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 11-Sep. Mavrokolymbos Valley : five 19-Sep, three 30-Sep. Cape Andreas: five 23-Sep. Rizokarpaso – Galiporni, Karpas: three 24-Sep. Armou-Tsada Track: one 26-Sep. Episkopi-Marathounta Road : eight 26-Sep. Mandria: one 28-Sep. Marathounta: one 29-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 30-Sep.

Akrotiri: ones and twos most days 3-21 Sep, with four 20-Sep. Kensington Cliffs: two 5-Sep, 17 on 13-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 5, 10 & 22-Sep. Phinikas: two 14-Sep. Baths of Aphrodite: one 16-Sep.

Peregrine Falco peregrinus   

Over 22 birds reported. Akrotiri Information Centre: five seen from 1-26-Sep, including one 3-Sep, one calidus 18-Sep and one ‘light-phase’ bird 18-Sep. Anarita Park : one 1-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 3-Sep. Ayia Napa Sewage Works: two 5-Sep. Bishop's Pool area: one 8-Sep and one probably ssp calidus 22-Sep. Kensington Cliffs: one brookei 11-Sep. Koili: one 19-Sep. Tsada Hills: one possible, distant 21-Sep. Cape Andreas: one 23-Sep. Galliporni, south Karpas: two appeared resident 24-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 28-Sep. Ag Georgios, N of Coral Bay: two 29 Sep. Arodhes: one 29-Sep.  

Chukar Alectoris chukar   

Largest groups: Armou-Tsada Track: c30 on 1-Sep. Ayios Epitikos, Kyrenia: 200 on 3-Sep. Blue Sea - Big Sand Valley : 30 on 24-Sep. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): 40 in four coveys 25-Sep. Up to 20 reported Akrotiri, Koilinia, Baths of Aphrodite, Rizokarpaso - Ayios Filonas, Cape Andreas, Kannaviou Dam, Paphos Sewage Plant and Vretsia Cliffs.  

Black Francolin Francolinus francolinus   

Rather elusive. Phasouri Reed-beds: one brief glimpse in flight 8-Sep. Vrysoulles area: one 11-Sep. Big Sand Valley : one ♂ 23-Sep. Blue Sea - Big Sand Valley : four seen 24-Sep. Rizokarpaso - Galiporni: two calling 24-Sep. Mandria: one 27-Sep.  

Quail Coturnix coturnix    

Ayios Georgios Church , Akrotiri: one flushed 8-Sep, two 12-Sep. Amathus: one 13-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 14-Sep.  

Water Rail Rallus aquaticus  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one reported (probably mostly only heard!) 8, 10, 12 & 15-Sep.  

Little Crake Porzana parva  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one juvenile 5-8 Sep, two 9-Sep, one imm. 24-Sep, one 26 & 29 Sep.  

Corncrake Crex crex   

Akrotiri Salt Lake : one 9-Sep. Paralimni area: one found dead beside the road to Ayia Napa 29-Sep.  

Moorhen Gallinula chloropus   

Max. numbers reported: 31 at Fresh Water Lake 21-Sep, 24 at Zakaki Marsh 9-Sep and 30+ at Phasouri Reed beds 21-Sep.  

Coot Fulica atra  

Very common locally, with max. numbers as follows: Larnaca Sewage Works: 76 on 28-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : 42 on 5-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: c51 on 19-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: 56 on 22-Sep. Coot, Moorhen sp. Zakaki pool: c104 mixed flock on 28-Sep  

Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo   

Paralimni: two flying low at 22.15pm on 1-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake: three 3-Sep, 47 on 4-Sep, 20 on 5-Sep, 10 on 7-Sep, 11 on 8-Sep, 29 on 9-Sep, and the last, one 13-Sep. Phasouri Reed Beds: one 11-Sep.  

Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus   

Akhna Dam: six 4-Sep, with nine 17-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: six 4-Sep, peaking at 11 on 7-Sep  and one 28-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : up to nine 5 & 21-Sep. Phasouri Reed beds: up to six 5-21 Sep, with nine 8-Sep.  

Stone Curlew Burhinus oedicnemus   

Large numbers at Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA), with 31 on 7-Sep, 56 on 19-Sep and 27 on 27-Sep. Akrotiri forest: one 10-Sep. Acheleia Olive grove: present all month with 26 on 18-Sep. Mandria: two 18-Sep. Akrotiri Gravel Pits: up to three 20-26 Sep. Larnaca Salt Lake : c12+ on 25-Sep. 

Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola  

Akhna Dam: 1 juv present from 2-24 Sep, with seven 3-Sep and three 4-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: 1juv 5-9 Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 17-Sep.  

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius  

Akhna Dam: 13 on 4-Sep, at least 21 from 11-24 Sep, with 12 on 28-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : up to four 5-22 Sep. Akrotiri Gravel Pits: two 7 & 8-Sep. Phasouri Reed Bed: one 18-29 Sep.  

Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula  

Akhna Dam: 15 on 4-Sep, 21 on 17-Sep and max. 30 on 18-Sep, with four 24-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 4-Sep and four 11-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one from 5-Sep, two 20-Sep. Akrotiri Gravel Pit: one 8-Sep. Shipwreck beach, Akrotiri: two 10-Sep. Mandria: two 17-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : one 21-Sep.  

Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus  

Lady’s Mile: at least 10 present all month, with 121 on 7-Sep, 70+ on 9-Sep and 25 on 22-Sep. Akhna Dam: two from 4-Sep, one 11-17-Sep. Shipwreck beach: 36 on 10-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 28-Sep.  

Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii   

Potamos Liopetri: one on rocks by Fish Farm 3-Sep. Paphos headland: two on rocks at the western tip 8-Sep and still present 9-Sep. Lady’s Mile: one 9-Sep.  

European Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria

Akhna Dam: one from 28-Sep, present to 30, the 3rd record for Cyprus .

Akhna Dam: five 4-11 Sep, one 18-24 Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: two juvs. 5-Sep. Fresh Water Lake : one 21-Sep.

Akhna Dam: up to five 4-22 Sep, 12 from 24-28 Sep. Ones and twos Larnaca Sewage Works, Lady’s Mile, Akrotiri Gravel Pits and Fresh Water Lake . Max. four Phasouri Reed-beds 20-Sep.

One was at Akhna Dam 2-4 Sep and another was there 18-Sep.

Reported all month with max. 10 at Akhna Dam 4-Sep, with up to five also seen Fresh Water Lake, Phasouri Reed-beds, Larnaca Sewage Works and Lady's Mile.

Akrotiri Gravel Pits: one 4-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: at least one all month, with six 4-Sep, four 11 & 28-Sep, two 5-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 20-Sep. Akhna Dam: up to two 11-28 Sep, with three 12-Sep.

Athalassa: one 3-Sep. Akhna Dam: at least one most visits, with max. five 4-Sep, 11 on 11-Sep  and seven 24-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: at least one 5-12 Sep, with max. four 5-Sep. Lakatameia: two 26-Sep.
