Up to 15 reported at Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Gravel Pits, Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa sewage pools, Bishop's Pool, Phasouri Reed-beds, Fresh Water Lake (South), Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh, Phasouri Reed-beds and Zakaki Marsh.  

Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus  

Akhna Dam: one present all month. Asprokremmos Dam: at least one 14-Jan, two from 15-Jan. Larnaca Sewerage Works: one 28-Jan.  

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis  

Akhna Dam: one 2-Jan, two 8-9-Jan. Asprokremmos Dam amenity area: one found freshly dead in orange grove 22-Jan. Ayia Napa Sewage Works: one 30-Jan. Gonyeli reservoir: one 5-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: max. seven 8-Jan), with up to five 12-28-Jan.  

GREAT CORMORANT Phalacrocorax carbo 

Akhna Dam: up to nine to 16-Jan, then huge increase with 67 on 18-Jan, and up to 86 from 24-31-Jan, ‘c400’ mid-Jan. Up to 10 at Archangelos, Asprokremmos Dam, Bishop's Pool, Evretou Dam South, Mansoura, Meneou Beach and Potamos Liopetri. Gonyeli reservoir: 12 on 5-Jan. Lakatameia, Manglis lake: max. 34 on 19-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 50 most days, with max. 67 on 23-Jan.  

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis 

Not many reports. Up to two most days at Mandria rocky islets, one Paphos Harbour 30-Jan and eight Quarry Beach 16-Jan.  

WHITE PELICAN Pelecanus onocrotalus 

Fresh Water Lake (South): one rather weak individual 6-Jan, found dead on 14-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: one present all month. 

GREAT Bittern Botaurus stellaris  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one 14-16-Jan.  

NIGHT HERON Nycticorax nycticorax 

Fresh Water Lake (South): one 14-Jan.  

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis   

Akhna Dam: four 31-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): up to 109 from 6-20-Jan. Geroskipou fields: max. seven 13-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: up to eight all month. Phasouri Reed-beds: max. six roosting 13-Jan, five 27-Jan. Singles also reported including at Mandria and Pioneer Beach Hotel.

Agia Thekla: two 19-Jan, three 30-Jan. Agia Trias: one 30-Jan. Agios Georgios Dam, Nicosia: one 29-Jan. Oroklini: eight flying nearby 12-Jan. Kermia Beach: two 30-Jan. Lakatameia: one Manglis lake 16-29-Jan. Potamos Liopetri: two 1-Jan, one 30-Jan. Sotira pools: one 5-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: five 12-Jan.  

Great Egret Egretta alba  

Athalassa: two 21-Jan, one 30-Jan.  

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea  

Akhna Dam: up to seven all month. Zakaki Marsh: max. 52 on 12-Jan, with up to 20 most other days. Up to three reported several other sites.  

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia  

Akhna Dam: at least one 9-24-Jan, with two 16-Jan. Zakaki Pool: one flying over 19-Jan.  

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber  

Akhna Dam: one 6-18-Jan. Akrotiri Salt Lake: max. c900 on 4-Jan and 870 on 16-Jan, with at least 350 at other times. Phasouri Reed-beds: one adult 4 & 16-Jan. Lady’s Mile: max. 40+ on 15-Jan, with at least 14 present at other times. Larnaca Airport fields North: six 6-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: max. 332 on 8-Jan, 186 on 23-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: max. 80 on 1-Jan, declining to 50 on 5-Jan, 30 on 9-Jan and 10 on 31-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: up to seven most days from 12-Jan, with 15 on 19 & 27-Jan and 23 on 31-Jan.

Asprokremmos Dam: 24 on 14-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 60+ from 8-23-Jan, with 72 on 29-Jan. Up to five at Akhna Dam, Evretou Dam South, Phasouri Reed-beds, Zakaki Marsh and Athalassa Dam.  

Gadwall Anas strepera  

Bishop's Pool: nine 12-Jan, seven 16-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 4-Jan, seven 6-Jan, eight 12-Jan, six 27-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): two 6-Jan, with one 14-20-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: two 12-Jan, four 13-Jan.  

Teal Anas crecca  

Bishop's Pool: 41 on 12-Jan, 21 on 16-Jan. Evretou Dam South: 55 on 1-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): 133 on 6-Jan, 141 on 14-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 244 on 8-Jan, declining to 119 on 29-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: up to 100 all month. Phasouri Reed-beds: 77 on 27-Jan, 126 12-Jan, 81 on 16-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: 24 on 12-Jan, 34 on 16-Jan and c50 on 19-Jan. Fewer other sites.  

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos  

Akhna Dam: 15 on 9-Jan, max. 32 on 31-Jan. Asprokremmos Dam: 85 on 14-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 119 on 8-Jan, 143 on 29-Jan. 10 or less at Bishop's Pool, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Fresh Water Lake (South), Gonyeli reservoir, Phasouri Reed-beds, Oroklini and Zakaki Marshes.

Fresh Water Lake (South): max. seven 14-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: nine 8-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: one 19-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: c15 from 4-16-Jan, c10 from 18-27-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: 27 12-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: up to 20 from 13-19-Jan, with six 27-Jan.  

Shoveler Anas clypeata  

Athalassa dam: 24 on 29-Jan. Ayia Napa Sewage Works: 24 on 1-Jan. Bishop's Pool: 19 on 16-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: 63 on 4-Jan, 77 on 12-Jan, max. 94 on 27-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): up to 23 from 14-20-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 61 on 8-Jan, 18 on 29-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: max. c100 on 2-Jan, 41 on 8-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: max. c20 on 19-Jan. Up to 10 also reported at these sites plus Akhna Dam and Akrotiri Gravel Pits.  

Pochard Aythya ferina  

Bishop's Pool: max. 14 on 12-Jan. Evretou Dam South: four 1-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: 11, including four male, seven female 4-Jan, one female 27-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): one Female 6-20-Jan. Gonyeli reservoir: 140 on 5-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 8-Jan, 11 on 23-Jan, 19 on 29-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: one female 27-Jan.  

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca  

Athalassa Dam: 18+ mostly males 30-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: 16 on 18-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: one 19-Jan.  

Smew Mergellus albellus  

Reported at Phasouri Reed-beds 28-Jan, details awaited.  

Duck sp. 

Ayia Napa area: c25 on the sea & then in flight, possibly Teal 19-Jan. Akrotiri Salt Lake: 170, including four flocks of dark ducks 16-Jan.  

Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator 

Potamos Liopetri: four fems. 1-Jan, otherwise up to three females present at least from 14-Jan to end of month.  

Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus  

Tsada Hills: one confirmed 31-Jan, was unusual.  

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus  

All seen in same area. Episkopi SBA: two 2-Jan, with nine at Kensington Cliffs 10-Jan, two 21-Jan and one Quarry Beach 16-Jan.  

Black Vulture Aegypius monachus  

Quarry Beach: one 16-Jan.  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus  

Singles throughout the month at Akhna Dam, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Gonyeli reservoir, Oroklini Marsh, Mandria and Famagusta lake. Phasouri Reed-beds: three seen most visits with four 19-Jan and six (including 1 dead) 4-Jan.  Larnaca Sewage Works: two 8-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 23-Jan, two 29-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: max. three 12 & 13-Jan, otherwise up to two to month end.  

Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus  

Tsada golf course: three circling in to roost at dusk 20-Jan. Phasouri Gravel Pits: two 19-Jan. Otherwise single ringtails, mostly adult females, fairly commonly reported throughout the month at Akhna Dam, Armou Hills, Aspro Pools, Kannaviou Dam, Kathikas, Letimbou-Choulou Valley, Mandria, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Sewage Plant, Tsada Hills, Neo-Kholetria and Vretsia.  

Goshawk Accipiter gentilis  

Always good to find this species. One ♀ 3km from Kato Pyrgos 21-Jan and at least two at Makheras Forest near monastery 2-Jan.  

Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus  

A few wintering birds reported: Marathounta: one male, flew into house window 7.30h, dazed and flew off 16-Jan. Akhna Dam: one 24-Jan. Episkopi Valley: two ‘displaying’ 22-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): one 14-Jan. Geroskipou: one 21-Jan. Mamonia: one 15-Jan. Agios Ambrosias: one 7-Jan. Polis & Kakopetria: two  28-Jan.  

Common Buzzard Buteo buteo  

Fairly common this winter. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to two all month with three 16-Jan and four 27-Jan. Goudhi: two together 1-Jan. Kantara area: two 26-Jan. Aspro Dam Pools: three 6-Jan. Singles reported at Akhna Dam area, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Aspro Dam Pools, Avgourou area, Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA), Bishop's Pool, Episkopi Garrison, Fort Bravo, Frenaros, Fresh Water Lake (South), Kannaviou dam, Kouklia, Choulou-Choulou Valley, Mandria, Neo Chorio, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Sewage Plant, Stavros tis Psokas valley, Terra, Xeros Potamos north and Zakaki Marsh.  

Steppe Buzzard B. b. vulpinus 

Episkopi Garrison East: one seen interacting with B.rufinus 16-Jan.  

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus  

A fairly healthy selection of widely scattered observations: Akhna Dam area: one, possibly two, 9-31-Jan. Armou Hills: two most days 11-22-Jan. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): one 25-Jan. Kathikas: one 23-Jan. Kouklia: two 21-Jan. Letimbou -Choulou Valley: one 15-Jan. Mansoura: one juv. most days 23-31-Jan. Theletra: one 21 & 30-Jan. Polemi: one feeding on road kill 11-Jan. Terra: one 6-Jan. Tsada golf course: one 20-Jan. Episkopi Garrison East: two displaying and talon grappling with B.buteo 16-Jan. Aspro pools: one 25-Jan.  

Bonelli’s Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus  

Akourdhalia: one seen near nest site 23-Jan. Mount Tripylos: two adults well seen 21-Jan. South of Axylou: pair of adults 21-Jan. Selemani: pair present all month. Agios Ambrosias: one 7-Jan.  

COMMON Kestrel Falco tinnunculus  

Common & widespread. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): nine hawking for insects in the rain 5-Jan (NWC), was noteworthy.

Peregrine Falco peregrinus  

Akhna Dam: one 2-Jan. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): one 4-Jan. Evretou Dam South: one 1-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): one 14-Jan . Larnaca Salt Lake: one 8-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 29-Jan. Mandria: one 7 & 21-26-Jan, one Calidris 22-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: one 11-24-Jan. Quarry Beach: one 16-Jan. Xeros Potamos to chapel: one 26-Jan. Aphrodite's baths to Akamas: two 28-Jan.  

Chukar Alectoris chukar  

Heard and seen widely with largest groups seen as follows: Akhna Dam: 12 in two coveys of six 2-Jan. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): 19, in four coveys 25-Jan. Kermia Beach area: 16 on 19-Jan. Oreites Forest: eight 10-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: eight  18-Jan and 10 on 19-Jan.  

Black Francolin Francolinus francolinus  

All records follow: Akhna Dam: one male 18-Jan. Coral bay: one male flew across main road 11-Jan. Kermia Beach: one calling 30-Jan. Mandria: one male seen 21 & 26-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: two 15-Jan, with one on other days. Phasouri Reed-beds: one heard 16-Jan, two 19-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: heard 27-Jan.  

Quail Coturnix coturnix  Akhna Dam: four 13-Jan, three 16-Jan.  

Water Rail Rallus aquaticus  

Not many reported this winter. Agios Georgios Dam Nicosia: one 29-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: one heard 13 & 27-Jan.  

Moorhen Gallinula chloropus  

Commonly reported with the max. numbers as follows: Akhna Dam: up to three 2-24-Jan. Aspro pools: three 12-Jan. Athalassa: four 21-Jan. Bishop's Pool: five 12-Jan, three 16-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): up to 32 seen on each of three visits 6-20-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: max. six 9-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: seven at farm 16-Jan.  

Coot Fulica atra  

Reported locally in large flocks, with 20+ being the norm. Max. numbers of 208 at Akhna Dam 2-Jan, c30 at Athalassa 21-Jan, 30 at Ayia Napa Sewage Works 30-Jan, 160 at Evretou Dam South 1-Jan, 139 at Phasouri Reed-beds 12-Jan, 62 at Fresh Water Lake (South) 14-Jan, 43 at Larnaca Sewage Works: 8 & 23-Jan, 90 at Oroklini Marsh 27-Jan and 46 at Zakaki Marsh 12-Jan.

Acheleia olive grove: 10 on 26 & 29-Jan. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): three 4-Jan (NWC). Meneou: 12 on 12-Jan. Nikokleia: 75 on 14-Jan. Phinikas: one 22-Jan.

Akhna Dam: one 2-Jan, two from 13-Jan with up to  13 from 18-Jan to month end. Lady's Mile: one 16-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: six 8-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: seven 17-Jan.  

Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus 

Agia Thekla shore: 21 on 27-Jan. Lady's Mile: up to eight 16-27-Jan. Larnaca Airport Pools (North): 58 on 8-Jan, 24 on 23-Jan. Larnaca Airport Pools (South): 18 on 23-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: max. 187 on 8-Jan, 67 on 29-Jan. Meneou Pools: c200 on 10-Jan.  

Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii  

Agia Trias: three 30-Jan. Kermia Beach: eight 30-Jan. Paphos Headland: two most days 8-22-Jan, with three 31-Jan.  

European Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria  

Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): two 3-Jan, 33 on 15-Jan. Larnaca Airport Fields (South): 13 on 17-Jan, at least seven 27-Jan. Mandria: 21 from 7-Jan, with max. 34 on 30-Jan. Paphos Headland: 17 on 8-Jan, with max 63 on 31-Jan.  

Spur-winged Plover Vanellus spinosus  

Akhna Dam: 25 present all month. Fresh Water Lake (South): max. 56 on 6-Jan, 42 on 14-Jan.C). Paphos Sewage Plant: at least four all month with eight 31-Jan.  

Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus  

Present all month, with max. numbers detailed below. Akhna area: max. 38 on 18-Jan. Aspro Dam Pools: 35 flew over 14-Jan. Avgourou area: 15 on 5-Jan. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): max. 43 on 15-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: max. c45 at pool 4-Jan. Fort Bravo: 45 on 17-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): 26 on 14-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 35 on 29-Jan. Mandria: max. 39 from 12-21-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: up to 50 all month. Paphos Sewage Plant: max. 58 from 20-27-Jan, with 79 on 27-Jan.  

Little Stint Calidris minuta  

Akhna Dam: present all month, with max. 10 on 18-Jan. Lady’s Mile: max. 26 from 15-27-Jan. Larnaca Airport Pools (South): max. 22 on 29-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: max. 31 on 29-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: four 17-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: one 8-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 13-Jan.  

Temminck’s Stint Calidris temminckii 

Akhna Dam: at least one all month, with two 9-24-Jan.  

Dunlin Calidris alpina  

Present all month at favoured sites, with max. 12 Akhna dam 12-Jan, 12 Lady's Mile 27-Jan, 43 Larnaca Airport Pools (South) on 23-Jan, 112 at Larnaca Salt Lake 8-Jan, 29 at Meneou Pools 10-Jan and six Phasouri Reed-beds 16-Jan. Smaller numbers also reported.  

Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes minimus  

Phasouri Reed-beds: one flushed under foot viewed in flight 7-Jan.  

Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago  

Akhna Dam: six 18-Jan, eight 24-Jan and max, 21 on 31-Jan. Gonyeli reservoir: six 5-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: one present all month. Paphos Sewage Plant: four 12-23-Jan, two 31-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: six 12-Jan, 11 on 16-Jan, fewer other dates.

Pedieos River near Boy scout station, Nicosia: one 7-Jan.  

Curlew Numenius arquata  

All reports: Akrotiri: two 15-Jan. Larnaca Airport fields south: 15 on 7-Jan, 17 on 17-Jan.

Oroklini Marsh: one 12-15-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 19-Jan.

common Redshank Tringa totanus 

Agia Oroklini Marsh: max. 36 on 14-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: 18 on 17-Jan. Otherwise up to six each, seen at Agia Thekla, Akhna Dam, Ayia Napa Sewage Works, Fresh Water Lake (South), Gonyeli reservoir, Larnaca Airport Pools (North),  Larnaca Sewage Works and Potamos Liopetri.

Akhna Dam: two 2-Jan, with one 24-31-Jan. Athalassa dam: one 29-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): one 6-Jan, two 20-Jan. Oroklini Mars: two 13-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 12-Jan. Zakaki: one 12-27-Jan.

Singles seen at Agia Thekla, Ayia Napa Sewage Works, Fresh Water Lake (South), Lakatameia, Paphos Headland and Potamos Liopetri.

Larnaca Sewage Works: one phalarope, presumed this sp. 7-Jan.

Lady's Mile: one 1st-w. 16-26-Jan.  

Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus 

Agia Trias: one 1st-w 12 & 30-Jan. Lady’s Mile: two, including 1 ad. 6-Jan, one 1st-w 12-Jan.

Lady’s Mile: one 16-19-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: one 18-Jan.  

Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus  

Max. counts 320 Fresh Water Lake (South) 6-Jan and 455 there 20-Jan, c950 Lady's Mile seafront 13-Jan, 550 Larnaca Salt Lake 29-Jan, c300 near Xylophaghou 28-Jan and 250 Oroklini Marsh 28-Jan.

Agia Trias: one 30-Jan. Lady’s Mile: one ad. 6-Jan. Larnaca Airport Pools (North): one 23-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: two 15-Jan. Potamos Liopetri: one 19-Jan.

Agia Trias: four 30-Jan, five 30-Jan. Kermia Beach: three adults 19 & 30-Jan.  

Common Gull Larus canus 

Fresh Water Lake (South): three 1st-winter birds 6-Jan, with  four 14-Jan. Lady’s Mile: one 1st w 6-12-Jan, four 16-Jan.  

BALTIC GULL Larus fuscus 

Larnaca Salt Lake: one 8 & 27-Jan.  

HEUGLIN’S GULL (Siberian Gull) Larus heuglini 

Lady’s Mile: at least two adults present 6-16-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: two 8-Jan, one 23-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 23-Jan, two 27-Jan.  

YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Larus michahellis/cachinnans  

Fairly widespread, with the largest numbers seen as follows: Fresh Water Lake (South): 90 moving west 6-Jan, 80 on 20-Jan. Lady’s Mile: 40+ on 15-Jan. Mandria: c250 floating in Timi Bay 12-Jan, but most present all month). Paphos Sewage Plant: 75 flew over 17-Jan. Aphrodite's baths to Akamas: 30-50 on Agios Georgios Island 28-Jan.  

CASPIAN GULL Larus cachinnans  

Lady’s Mile: two juvs 6-Jan, 29 on 12-Jan, 12 on 16-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: up to 109 on 8 & 23-Jan, 316 on 29-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 99 on 23-Jan, 79 on 29-Jan.  

Armenian Gull Larus armenicus   

Lady’s Mile: c8 on 6-Jan, up to two adults 12-27-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: two adults 23-Jan, one adult 29-Jan.  

Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla  

One 1st-w bird was seen flying along coast off Orga near Cape Kormakiti 27-Dec, the 3rd record subject to assessment.  

SANDWICH TERN Sterna sandvicensis 

Agia Trias: seven loafing on rocks, then moved north into Famagusta Bay 30-Jan. Ladies Mile: one 6-Jan, two 24-Jan.

Akhna dam: one 9-18-Jan.  

ROCK DOVE Columba livia 

Few genuine wild birds seen. Pissouri Bay gorge: two 2-Jan. 

Wood pigeon Columba palumbus  

Some large flocks reported this winter. Noteworthy records follow: Akhna Dam: up to 110 seen 9 & 18-Jan. Geroskipou fields: c1000 on 14-Jan. Goudhi: 500 all month, roosting in variable numbers of 200 – 500 birds, 31-Jan. Mandria: up to 290 most days on 7-21-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: 350 early morning 27-Jan.  

COLLARED DOVE Streptopelia decaocto 

Thought to be increasing, but more discreet and seemingly scarce. Up to two birds each, seen Frenaros, Lakatameia, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Sewage Plant, Phasouri Reed-beds, Souni and Vrysoulles.

Two very early records at Akrotiri, with one sighted between Phasouri reed beds and aerial farm then 2 at once near lookout tower on south edge of salt lake, 19-Jan.
