Locally common. Largest groups: Fresh Water Lake (South): 46 including juveniles and pair with one downy chick 21-Jul . Larnaca Sewage Works: 54 on 23-Jul. Phasouri Reed-beds: c20 on 10-Jul . Zakaki Marsh: 38 including 10 chicks 19-Jul .
 

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis 

Larnaca Sewage Works:
two reported 21-Jun . This summer record needs confirmation.

Pyla: one 1-Jul .
 

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis  

Rather scarce this summer, with only 2 records:
Lady's Mile: one offshore 19-Jul. Paphos Harbour : one imm. 30-Jul .

Larnaca Sewage Works: four 14-Jun .
 

Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus  

Where present in summer this secretive species may breed locally:
Fresh Water Lake (South): one 5 & 21-Jun . Phasouri Reed-beds: two, calling to each other in reeds 14-Jun, one male 4-Jul . Zakaki Marsh: one 10-Jul, two ads. 19-Jul .
 

Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax  

Sotira Pools: one first-summer plumaged 1-Jun. Avgourou area: one first-summer type moving north 4-Jun. Fresh Water Lake (South): Not breeding. Five, including three adults, 5-Jun, adults still present 20-Jun, nine 6-Jul, six 21-Jul . Arakapas Dam: one imm. 4-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: one 7-Jul.
 

Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides 

Fresh Water Lake (South): eight including, three active nests 5-Jun, 18 Including at least five juveniles 6-Jul, 23 Including nine juveniles 21-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 17-Jun. Oroklini Marsh: up to three all June, one most days 6-30-Jul, with three 29-Jul. Paphos Sewage Plant: three 1-Jun, one 6-Jun. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to three 14-Jun – 4-Jul, four 10-Jul. Sotira Pools: three 1-Jun, one 14-Jul. Mamonia: one 20-May. Zakaki Marsh: one 21-Jun, two ads. 19-Jul.
 

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis 

Active colony at Fresh Water Lake (South), with
up to 116 birds, including 61 juveniles present 5-20-Jun, 93 counted 6-Jul and 114, with some juvs. still in the nest 21-Jul. Many flocks over Agios Nikolaos from same colony, including 21 on 21-Jul and groups of 15 & 5 moving northeast from Fresh Water Lake colony 2-Jun. Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): six Agios Nikolaos Reservoir, almost certainly members of Fresh Water Lake colony 9-Jun. Oroklini Marsh: two 8-Jul, seven 18-Jul, one 31-Jul. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 1-Jun, six, including 2 in breeding plumage 6-Jun with just one remaining 9-Jun. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to three 10-Jun – 21-Jul.
 

Little Egret Egretta garzetta  

Singles widely present all summer. Largest groups:
Akhna Dam: three 10-Jun. Fresh Water Lake (South): up to 11 from 5-Jun – 21-Jul. Lady's Mile pool: two 7-Jul. Meneou Pools: two 2-Jun. Oroklini Marsh: max. seven 26-Jun, 15 on 31-Jul, including single nest being incubated. Zakaki Marsh: three 1-Jun.
 

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea 

Fresh
Water Lake
(South): three 6-21-Jul. Ones and twos also reported there and Larnaca Sewage Works, Oroklini Marsh, Phinikas and Zakaki Marsh.

(South): one 5-Jun & 6-Jul. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 23-Jun & 4-Jul.
 

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus 

Fresh Water Lake
(South): one 5-Jun & 21-Jul. Phasouri Reed-beds: three 31-Jul, early migrants.
 

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia 

Dates suggest a mobile group of at least two birds present 1-Jun – 29-Jul, moving around between sites.
Phasouri Reed-beds: two 1-22-Jun. Oroklini Marsh: four 21-22-Jun, three 4-18-Jul, one remaining 20-Jul. Akhna Dam: one 30-Jun - 1-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 24-29-Jul.
 

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber 

Larnaca Airport Pools (North): 118 on 3-Jun, increasing to 137 on 25-Jun, c70 on 11-Jul, one present 26-28-Jul, ringed as chick in Gediz Delta, Smirni, Turkey 31-July 2005. Larnaca Salt Lake : numbers remained static at c60 8-Jun – 7-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 21 on 23-Jul. Meneou Pools: 43 on 15-Jun, had moved to salt lake by 21-Jun.
 

Teal Anas crecca 

Larnaca Sewage Works: one female 13-Jul. Phasouri Reed-beds: two probable, in flight 31-Jul.
 

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos  

Larnaca Sewage Works: max. numbers reported, 153 Including female with six downy young 23-Jul. Good flocks with young, reported Arakapas Dam, Bishop's Pool, Fresh Water Lake (South), Oroklini Marsh, Phasouri Reed-beds and Zakaki Marsh.
 

Pintail Anas acuta 

Phasouri Reed-beds: one 31-Jul.
 

Garganey Anas querquedula 

Oroklini Marsh: max. nine 12-Jun, 2 broods seen, 6 and 8 juvs.; up to seven from 7-14-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 2-Jun and two 13-23-Jul. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 4-Jul, four 19-Jul, two 31-Jul.
 

Shoveler Anas clypeata  

Only at two sites over the summer.
Larnaca Sewage Works: one male 13-Jun – 23-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: one 10-19-Jul.
 

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca  

Interesting post-breeding dispersal after breeding at Phasouri Reed-beds.
Phasouri Reed-beds: up to nine counted 5-Jun – 31-Jul. Fresh Water Lake (South): four 6-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: 2 juvs. 7-Jul, four 13-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: four 13-Jul, five juvs. 18-Jul, one remaining 19-31-Jul. Zakaki Marsh: five 10-Jul, 28 on 19-Jul, 19 on 21-Jul, two remaining 31-Jul.

Almirolivado-Troodos (Amiantos mines) & Trimiklini: singles seen at each site 5 & 7-Jul. Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): one present 4 & 6-Jul. Episkopi village - Paphos: one possibly with nest in the big cliff 22-Jun, seen and heard 25-Jun. Kensington Cliffs: one 17-Jun. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 23-Jul. Livadhi tou Pasia: one flew over at high speed 29-Jun. Souni: one 16-Jul. Tunnel Beach, Episkopi Garrison: two 1-Jul.
 

Chukar Alectoris chukar 

Chicks widely reported from early June, with family coveys of up to 16 reported throughout July.
Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA): adult with at least two very young chicks 2-Jun, 40 Including coveys of 15, 8, 6 and 6 small chicks respectively 10-Jun. Arakapas Dam: 12 on 10 flying juvs 4-Jul. Lemythou ( Elias Bridge ): 16 mostly well-grown juvs. 29-Jun. Phinikas, Asprokremmos Dam: 24 including 6 chicks 17-Jul, are typical of reports.
 

Black Francolin Francolinus francolinus  

Heard calling June to mid-July
Akhna Dam, Armou Track, Athalassa Park, Ayios Nikolaos (ESBA), Episkopi – Pitargou, Famagusta, Fresh Water Lake (South), Lysi, Meneou, Oroklini Marsh, Paphos Sewage Plant, Sotira Pools and Tymvou. Tremithousa: four, one ♀ +3 juv attempting to cross main road 2-Jul.
 

Quail Coturnix coturnix  

Several breeding reports from the Famagusta area.
Akhna Dam: one calling 10-16-Jun. Avgourou area: two probable pair 28-Jun. Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): one calling 2-9-Jun and 11-21-Jul. Ormideia area: one Calling 8-Jul. Xylophaghou area: one calling 8-Jul.
 

Moorhen Gallinula chloropus  

Fairly widely reported, often with juvs. Arakapas Village Bridge , Aspro Dam Pools, Athalassa Park , Bishop's Pool and Sotira Pools. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to 12, including at least six. juvs 19-Jul. Zakaki Marsh: 17 on 21-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: max. 20, including juvs. 24-Jul. Fresh Water Lake (South): max. 32 including 21 adults, 11 juveniles 6-Jul.
 

Coot Fulica atra 

Breeding widely reported:
Athalassa Dam: c60 incl. at least 6 juveniles 6-Jun, 101 on 21-Jun. Fresh Water Lake (South): 155, including 3 broods of 4, 2 & 3 young plus five older juveniles 5-Jun, 22 juveniles & three downy young 20-Jun, 242 on 21-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: 10 including young 15-Jun max. 90 on 29-30-Jun. Sotira Pools: five incl. three downy young 14-Jul. Zakaki Marsh: 23 plus 10 juvs. 10-Jul, 37 on 21-Jul. Also reported other sites.
 

Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus 

Selected reports:
Akhna Dam: 10 Included 3/4 young near full grown 7-Jul, 13 on 22-Jul. Fresh Water Lake (South): 19 Including four small young & three juveniles 6-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: 28 on 2-Jun, 27 plus 4 young 17-Jun, 81, incl. 36 adults and 45 juveniles 25-Jun, 88 on 13-Jul. Meneou Pools: 30 on 10-Jun. Oroklini Marsh: max. 200, including young on 28-30-Jun. Phasouri Reed-beds: eight including 4 recently-hatched chicks 4-Jul, 10 including 3 young chicks, 2 weeks old and 2 older juvs. 19-Jul. Spiros Pool: max. 26 on 7-Jun.

Acheleia Olive Grove: three 25-Jun. Agia Dilekkaya: probable pair 18-Jun. Agia Marina, Xylotympou: one calling 25-Jun. Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): one calling 1-Jun, one 9-Jun, four 22-Jul. Koloni: one on eggs 20-Jun. Fresh Water Lake (South): two, probably a pair 6-Jul. Koloni: two, pair on nest, 2 eggs 21-Jun. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 13-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: one 12-Jun. Tymvou area: one 19-Jun. Vrysoulles: four, one adult on nest with two chicks. Other adult nearby 7-Jun.
 

Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola  

Akhna Dam: one 11-14-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 2-Jun. Oroklini Marsh: one 28-Jun. Phasouri Reed-beds: one imm. 19-31-Jul.
 

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius 

Probably bred at following sites:
Akhna Dam: one from 1-Jul, max. 10 on 28-Jul. Evretou Dam south: one 24-Jul. Fresh Water Lake (South): max. five 21-Jul. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 23-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: max. 6, including 4 juvs, 24-Jun, max. 20 on 15-Jul. Paphos Sewage Plant: three 6-22-Jul. Phasouri Reed-beds: max. 13 on 21-Jul. Phinikas, Asprokremmos Dam: five plus one imm. 17-Jul. Zakaki Marsh: max. three 10-Jul.

Spiros Pool: one 13-Jun.
 

Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus  

Present and probably breeding at all following sites. Noteworthy reports listed:
Lady's Mile: max. 63 on 19-Jul. Larnaca Airport Pools (North): 82 on 25-Jun. Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 14 on 17-Jun. Meneou Pools: max. 18 on 25-Jun. Oroklini Marsh: one only 7-Jul. Potamos Liopetri: one juv. 9-Jul. Spiros Pool: max. 33 on 13-Jun. Zakaki Marsh: one 10-Jul.
 

Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii 

Paphos Headland: three 14-30-Jul at least, and reported there in June, though unconfirmed. Spiros Pool: one imm. 10-13-Jun.
 

Spur-winged Plover Vanellus spinosus  

Reported from 9 sites.
Akhna Dam: up to 13 from 7-Jul to month end. Athalassa Dam: six, including at least 1 juv. 10-Jul. Fresh Water Lake (South): eight, probably breeding 5-Jun, 16 breeding suspected but not proven 21-Jul . Larnaca Airport : one flew over car park 18-Jun. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 2-Jun, increasing to five from 13-Jul. Oroklini Marsh: max. 12 on 26-Jun, estimate 6 successful nests to end of June, max. 30 on 18-Jul, minimum 10 nests by end July. Paphos Sewage Plant: three 1-Jun, one nest with 3 eggs, 9-20-Jun, but only one adult remaining to end July and no juvs. seen. Paralimni Lake/Sotira Pools: six 1-Jun, 17 on 14-Jul. Spiros Pool: one 13-25-Jun.
