Fresh Water Lake (South): at least 50, max. 82 on 20-Sep. Kannaviou dam: max. 30+ including many juvs. 16-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 100 all month, max. 114 on 26-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: up to six all month. Zakaki Marsh: max. 15 on 23-Sep.  

SCOPOLI’S Shearwater Calonectris diomedea diomedea  

Agios Filonas: at least eight  flying northeast, feeding 22-Sep.  

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis  

Up to four Agios Filonas, Cape Andreas , Kermia Beach , Paphos Harbour and Spiros Beach Buoys; max. 12 during rough seas Mandria 9-Sep.  

White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus    

Asprokremmos Dam: seven 30-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake : seven over-flying 30-Sep. Possibly same birds involved.

Fresh Water Lake (South): six 11-Sep, three 20-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: one 2-18-Sep. Paphos: nine flying over near headland 4-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 21-Sep.  

Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides    

Cape Andreas : one 23-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): eight 11-Sep, two 20-Sep, one 30-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: one 2-11-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: five 5-Sep.  

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis    

Akhna Dam: three 10-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): max. 243 on 11-Sep, 261 on 30-Sep.  

Little Egret Egretta garzetta    

Ones and twos fairly widely reported. Akhna Dam: max. nine 4-Sep. Asprokremmos Dam: five 20-Sep, four 21-Sep. Cape Andreas: three 23-Sep. Cape Greco: 23 coasting south 7-Sep. Evretou Dam: 18 on 4-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): 27 on 11-Sep, 46 on 20-Sep, 48 on 30-Sep, fewer at other times. Larnaca Sewage Works: five 8-Sep. Latchi: c90 over Latchi harbour 7-Sep, nine flying inland off sea 8-Sep. Manglis Lake, Lakatameia: eight 11-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: three 20-Sep, first nest 2 dead chicks, 2nd nest 1 dead, 1fledged Sep, no dates provided. Phasouri Reed-beds: seven 1-Sep, five 3-12-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: max. four 16-Sep, three 22-Sep.

Akhna Dam: two 21-Sep, one 22-29-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 26-28-Sep, five 28-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: two 20-Sep.  

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea  

Max. numbers follow: Akhna Dam: seven 16-Sep. Asprokremmos Dam: five 20-Sep. Baths of Aphrodite area, Latchi: four 7-Sep. Bishop's Pool: six 26-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): seven 20-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: seven 13-Sep. Latchi Harbour: 13 flying from northeast and lifted on thermal 8-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: c27 on 18-Sep, when first reported, then max. c52 on 23-Sep.  

Purple Heron Ardea purpurea  

Akhna Dam: two 3-Sep, one 16-Sep. Evretou Dam: one 24-Sep. Mandria beach: 11 on 13-Sep. Perneras (Protaras): one flying overhead following coastline 20-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 12-Sep.  

White Stork Ciconia ciconia   

All reports listed: Akhna Dam: one 21-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake : five rested and then flew off 25-Sep. Koma tou Gialou, Karpas: 14 flying southwest very high 23-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 27-Sep to month end.  

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus  Most early month, with passage trailing off to month end. Fresh Water Lake (South): up to two 11-30-Sep. Paphos: five flying over near headland 4-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to two 1-23-Sep. Singles also reported.  

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia   

Akhna Dam: one 3-29-Sep, with two 10-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake : one on pond, 13 overflying 17-Sep. Phinikas: one 14-20-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: three 7-Sep, one 21-29-Sep. Oroklini seafront: 41 on 28-Sep). Zakaki Marsh: 22-Sep to month end.  

Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber  

Fresh Water Lake (South): one 20-Sep, was the only report from this site. Larnaca Sewage Works: up to 50 most days, with max.  60 on 2-Sep, 62 on 25-29-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: at least one most days 8-20-Sep, with up to six to month end. Zakaki Marsh: one juvenile, to 5-Sep.  

Gadwall Anas strepera   

Phasouri Reed-beds: one Male 1-Sep, unseasonably early, pending confirmation.  

Teal Anas crecca  

Less than 10 Akhna Dam and Asprokremmos Dam. Fresh Water Lake (South): 26 on 11-Sep, increased to 77 on 30-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: 12 on 8-Sep, with 60+ from 25-Sep to month end. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to 12 from 18-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: up to 12 from 20-Sep.  

Pintail Anas acuta   

Fresh Water Lake (South): up to two 20-21-Sep.  

Garganey Anas querquedula  

Migrants numbers declined by month end. Akhna Dam: four 8-Sep. Chrysochou Bay: 200+ in 4+ groups, 500+ metres offshore 4-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): two 11-21-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: 74 on 8-Sep, declining to eight 29-Sep. Latchi: c100 off coast 7-Sep, c80 on 8-Sep during strong SW wind. Oroklini Marsh: at least one all month, with a max. of five 6-7-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: two drakes 1-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: 18 on 23-Sep, two 20-Sep.  

Shoveler Anas clypeata  

Larnaca Sewage Works: c40 on 3-Sep, 163 on 8-Sep, peaking at 288 on 29-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 25-Sep, four 26-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): up to six 11-30-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: four 5-Sep. Zakaki marsh: three 18-Sep, up to six 23-25-Sep.  

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca   

Phasouri Reed-beds: one elusive bird remained 1-21-Sep, as pools dried out. Larnaca Sewage Works: two from 2-Sep, five 8-25-Sep, six 29-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: one 1 & 25-Sep.  

Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus   

An obvious passage on 1-Sep with c500 counted at Akrotiri Environmental Centre. Other peak passages occurred 4-5-Sep, 17-Sep and 28-Sep. Otherwise a steady passage was noted throughout the month over the south of the island with noteworthy records listed. 60 records, comprising 1287 birds were counted.

Armou - Tsada area: seven 25-Sep, nine 30-Sep. Cape Greco Park: 15 on 5-Sep. Marathounta: max. seven 16-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: 12 flying over heading, northwest 28-Sep. Paramytha: c40 on 5-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: c150 on 1-Sep,  c64 on 12-Sep. Souni: 12 on 7-Sep, 26 over course of day 10-Sep, 12 on 24-Sep, seven 25-Sep. Sylvana Restaurant area: 17 on 12-Sep. Tala hills: 12 on 16-Sep, 11 on 17-Sep. Tsada Hills: 40 flying southeast 4-Sep. Zakaki marsh: c8 on 18-Sep, four 26-Sep. Up to five birds also reported, but not listed.

Aspro Dam Pools: one 28-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): one 21-Sep. Kamares, Paphos: one 24-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: two 23-Sep, one juv. 25-Sep. Zakaki Marsh: one 26-Sep.  

Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus  

Larnaca Sewage Works: one flying over heading east 29-Sep.  

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus   

Two at Archimandrita and another at Dora 2-Sep. Extreme View Café: two 19-Sep. Kensington Cliffs: 10 on 22-Sep  

Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus  

Akrotiri Environmental Centre: one 17-Sep, was a good sighting.  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus   

Reported from 25 sites, with sightings noted all month. Ones and twos the norm, with greater numbers listed: Akrotiri: three 23-Sep. Akrotiri Environmental Centre: 15 on 17-Sep, 10 on 28-Sep. Akrotiri Roost: seven 20-Sep, four near masts 26-Sep. Cape Andreas: 12, including 1ad. male 22-Sep). three 23-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: three 29-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: 10 roosting nearby 25-Sep. Salamis : four 23-Sep. Timi plain: c15 coming in to roost in crop field 18-Sep.  

Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus   

Some very early birds reported this autumn. Akrotiri Environmental Centre: singles 7, 14, 17, 21 7 28-Sep. Mandria: one 27-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one female 12-Sep. Sylvana Restaurant area: one female 12-Sep.  

Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus   

Akhna Dam: one imm. 21-Sep. Akrotiri Environmental Centre: singles 10, 14 & 21-Sep, five 17-Sep. Akrotiri Roost: two 26-Sep. Armou Hills: one 1st-W 11-Sep. Asprokremmos Dam: one juv. 20 & 23-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv. 28 & 29-Sep. Mandria: one 1st-winter 21 & 29-Sep. Tsada Track: one at least, daily from 12-Sep.  

Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus   

More common than Pallid Harrier. Singles, mostly juvs. reported all month. Akrotiri Environmental Centre: one 3 & 14-Sep, three 10-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 16-Sep. Akrotiri Roost: one juv. 26-Sep. Aradippou area: one 13-Sep. Armou Hills: one female 17-Sep, two 30-Sep. Cape Andreas: two 22-Sep. Dhiarizos Valley: one lower area near Aspro dam 18-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): one juv. 21-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv. in fields 3-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one 12-Sep, three 13-Sep, two juvs. came in to roost in scrub 26-Sep, 1 juv 28-Sep. Mandria: one 11-Sep, one ad. male 13-Sep. Opposite Marathounta village: two flying around edge of burnt area from scrub fire 6-Sep, one 30-Sep (PJE, WAH). Oroklini Marsh: one 11 & 12-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: two adults preying on Yellow Wags. 13-Sep, one juv. 28-Sep. Tsada Hills: one juv. 6 & 19-Sep.

14 single unidentified ‘ringtails’ were reported. Akrotiri Roost: two juvs, 26-Sep. Mandria: three 11-Sep. Akhna Dam: two 16-Sep. Dromolaxia area: two Pallid/Monty 21-Sep.

Limassol: one on rooftops Makarios Ave. 28-Sep. Marathounta: one juvenile on tree near road at mountaintop 28-Sep

Akrotiri Environmental Centre: one 3-Sep, three 17-Sep, one 28-Sep. Akrotiri Salt Lake: two 20-Sep. Karpas Peninsula: one 22-Sep. Limassol: one seen from motorway toward Ypsonas 23-Sep. Marathounta: two near New Church, descending in direction of airport 29-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: one 23-Sep and 6-Oct. Souni: one disturbed from top of Pinus brutus, seen circling wood on return and later in afternoon 24-Sep.

Akrotiri Salt Lake : two migrating 12-Sep, two 15-Sep, one 25-Sep. Asprokremmos Dam: one caught fish in reservoir and took to top of pylon for lunch 17-Sep. Cape Greco Park: one 15-Sep.

Akrotiri Environmental Centre: three 3-Sep, two 7-Sep, six 10-Sep, 12 on 14-Sep, seven 17-Sep, six 21-Sep, eight 24-Sep and five 28-Sep. Pernera (Protaras): one 15-19-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: seven 25-Sep, re[ported as Common Kestrel, may have been this sp.

Agios Theryssos: one on road 21-Sep. Armou - Tsada Track: one 17 & 25-Sep. At least three singles seen on Karpas Peninsula 23-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): one 20-Sep. Kantara Castle: three 23-Sep. Kermia Beach: one 5-Sep. Manglis Lake, Lakatameia: one 14-Aug. Oroklini Marsh: up to two most visits. Paphos Sewage Plant: one male 22-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 18-Sep. Strovolos, Nicosia : one 12-Sep.

Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): one calling from lucerne field 2-Sep. Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): one 26-Sep. Akhna Dam: one 15-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): one flushed 21-Sep. Souni: one flushed in hills 14-Sep. Tsada: one 19-Sep. Stroumbi: one 5-Sep.

Onesand twos reported all month Athalassa Dam, Fresh Water Lake (South), Phasouri Reed-beds, Sotira Pools and Zakaki Marsh.  

Spotted Crake Porzana porzana  

Fresh Water Lake (South): one 11 & 20-21-Sep.  

Little Crake Porzana parva  

Fresh Water Lake (South): one 11-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: one juv. 29-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 18-Sep.  

Common Crane Grus grus  

Larnaca Sewage Works: 11 flying west in v-formation 25-Sep.  

Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo  

Kensington Cliffs: c30 on 23-Aug [probably Demoiselles]. Three birds were found dead or injured by Forestry Dept. in Platania Mountains , just to the SE of Kakopetria village in Troodos.  Two of the birds were dead and 1 with broken kegs, all collided with high voltage power lines that cross the river valley.  The birds probably were moving during the afternoon of the 28-Aug from Morphou bay along the Solea valley to the S - SE when they collided with the wires. They were found late afternoon of the 28-Aug. Akrotiri Salt Lake: two 5-Sep, two flying over toward Quarry Beach 10-Sep. Polis Campsite: 33 circling low over the trees 7-Sep.

Stone Curlew Burhinus oedicnemus  

Cape Greco : one 8-Sep, two near Sea Caves 15-Sep. Larnaca Airport Salt Lake North: c100+ on 28-Sep. Mandria: up to seven 11-29-Sep. Vrysoulles: one 25-Sep.  

Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola    

Akhna Dam: three 3-8-Sep, one juv. 25-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 8-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one still present (since August) 5-Sep.  

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius   

Present all month at several sites. Max. numbers: Akhna Dam: max. 24 on 26-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): up to 12 from 11-20-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: max. eight 5-Sep.  

Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula  

Akhna Dam: up to nine 3-16-Sep, 16 on 25-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): eight 11-Sep, three 20-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: six 26-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: four 16-Sep, three 20-Sep, four 24-Sep. Ones and twos also reported.  

Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus   

Fresh Water Lake (South): five 11-20-Sep. Lady’s Mile: 68 on 16-Sep, 107 on 25-26-Sep. Up to three also reported Larnaca Sewage Works, Makronnisos (Agia Napa), Phasouri Reed-beds, Spiros Beach, Akhna Dam and Kermia Beach.  

Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii   

Kermia Beach : three 5-15-Sep, five 15-Sep, seven 15-Sep. Paphos Headland: three present all month.  

Pacific Golden Plover Pluvialis fulva   

First seen 30-Aug, present on headland all month.  

Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola   

Akrotiri Gravel Pits: one 23-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: four, flying away, 26-Sep. Spiros Beach: one 28-Sep.  

Spur-winged Plover Vanellus spinosus   

Akhna Dam: at least 40 all month, with 52, including one with ring on leg 13-Sep, 62+ on 29-Sep. Bishop's Pool: one 1-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): min. 59 on 11-Sep, max. 104 on 20-Sep. Larnaca Desalination Plant area: four 13-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: max. 19 on 2-Sep, declining to at least two from 2-Sep, with nine 13-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: at least six all month, with max. 40 on 2-Sep. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 22-Sep.  

Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus  

Akhna Dam: one 8-22-Sep, two 25-Sep to month end. Larnaca Sewage Works: 12 on 29-Sep. Marathounta: one flying high over foothills, heading south 30-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: one 19-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: three 18-Sep. Potamos Liopetri: one 30-Sep.

Larnaca Sewage Works: 1juv. 2-8-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one juv. still present 1-7-Sep.  

Sanderling Calidris alba  

Larnaca Sewage Works: one 13-Sep. Spiros Beach: one 28-Sep.  

Little Stint Calidris minuta   

Reported at all suitable wetland sites. Noteworthy reports: Akhna Dam: 46 on 26-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: 38 on 26-Sep.  

Temminck’s Stint Calidris temminckii   

Akhna Dam: 5+ on 3-Sep, four 4-Sep, two 8-Sep, one 26-29-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): one 11-Sep, two 20-30-Sep.  

Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea  

Akhna Dam: five 8-25-Sep, with eight 13-Sep and three 26-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): two 11-Sep, one 20-21-Sep and three 30-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: at least one all month, max. four 25-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 16-23-Sep, three 18-23-Sep and four 20-Sep.  

Dunlin Calidris alpina

Akhna Dam: nine 3-Sep, five remaining 16-Sep. Fresh Water Lake (South): at least two 11-30-Sep, five 20-Sep. Kannaviou dam: two 16-Sep. Oroklini Marsh: two 14-Sep. Singles also reported.

Akhna Dam: max. three 3-Sep.  Fresh Water Lake (South): five 11-30-Sep. Larnaca Sewage Works: two 8-Sep. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to three 1-18-Sep, five 3-Sep. Singles also reported.

 Kyrenia: two ads, city harbour 5-Sep and 3 adults, 1 imm around Acapulco Beach Hotel 7-Sep – only 7 previous records and first since 1996.

Akhna Dam: one 21-Sep, not seen by others in group and needs confirming please. Oroklini Marsh: three 17-Sep.

One bird reported since August and seen again on following days:  Akhna Dam: one fem. 28-Sep and 29-Sep.

Larnaca Sewage Works: two seen 1hr after sunset, flying over pools, then one perched on fence near hide in moonlight 26-Sep.
