Evretou Dam: one 13-Jan. Manglis Lake, Lakatameia: one 15-Jan and 18-Jan. Potamos Liopetri: one 19-Jan with two 23-Jan and 30-Jan. Protaras: one 19-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: one 6-Jan.

Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis

Agia Napa Sewage Works: one 27-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: in Jan 2005 75 were present, the max. Jan 2006 count was a mere 27; this Jan numbers dropped again with a max. of only 22 on 23-Jan. Potamos Liopetri: two 26-Jan.

Akhna Dam: numbers varied somewhat with 73 3-Jan, 129 13-Jan, 171 14-Jan, 72 21-Jan 154 27-Jan and 89 31-Jan. Arminou Dam: five 20-Jan. Asprokremmos Dam: between four and seven birds present all month. Athalassa Park : four 8-Jan and 12 20-Jan. Bishop's Pool: two 6-Jan and 12-Jan. Evretou Dam: two 8-Jan. Kannaviou Dam: one 6-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 53 5-Jan with only up to 14 present during the rest of the month. Limassol Bay : one 12-Jan. Manglis Lake , Lakatameia: four 15-Jan and two 18-Jan. Agia Napa Sewage Works: 10 on both 11-Jan and 16-Jan. Akhna Dam: present all month with a max. of six on 13-Jan. Athalassa Park: c15 8-Jan, c50 flying north and c50 on the lake 18-Jan, 30+ 20-Jan. Bishop's Pool: 25 6-Jan and 55 12-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): 27 9-Jan, 29 20-Jan and 17 31-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: numbers decreased during the month with 407 5-Jan, 331 15-Jan and only 147 23-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: present all month with a max. of c100 6-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: less than 10 5-Jan, one 15-Jan and five 21-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: three 6-Jan.

Pochard Aythya ferina

Larnaca Sewage Works: numbers increased during the month starting with 148 5-Jan, then 194 15-Jan and finally 304 on 23-Jan. This latter count is the highest since January 1993 when there were 420 at Evretou Dam and 480 at Akhna Dam.

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca

Athalassa Park : six 8-Jan and at least 12 18-Jan. Bishop's Pool: four 7-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 29 2-Jan, 39 15-Jan and 50 on 23-Jan. This latter count is almost certainly an island record for this species.

Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula

Larnaca Sewage Works: a female present on 2-Jan, 5-Jan and 15-Jan was joined by a second 23-Jan.

Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator

 Potamos Liopetri coast. The five wintering females were joined by a sixth from 29-Jan.

Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus

Episkopi Cliffs: two 11-Jan. Kerynas Cliffs: three 8-Jan. Kidasi: one 20-Jan.  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus

Akhna Dam: one 31-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: one present most visits with two 15-Jan and 23-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: one or two present all month. One seen on 12-Jan was sporting a white wing-tag. Polis Reed-beds: one 26-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: two 6-Jan and three 12-Jan and 19-Jan.

Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus

Agia Napa Sewage Works: one 16-Jan. Akhna Dam: single ringtails on 14-Jan and 27-Jan. Arminou Dam: ringtail 20-Jan. Axylou: one 18-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: two ringtails 7-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: male 7-Jan and 17-Jan. Tsada Hills: singles daily 13-Jan until 15-Jan and also 31-Jan.

Goshawk Accipiter gentiles Makheras: one 9-Jan.

Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus Athalassa Park : one being mobbed by Hooded Crows Corvus corone 20-Jan. Evretou Dam: one 13-Jan. Marathounta: one 22-Jan. Stavros tis Psokas Valley : one 10-Jan.

Akhna Dam and area: one 15-Jan and 31-Jan with two reported 27-Jan. Asprokremmos Dam/Pools: singles 1-Jan, 11-Jan and 13-Jan with two 17-Jan and three 27-Jan. Athalassa Park : one 8-Jan. Bishop's Pool: singles 6-Jan and 12-Jan. Evretou Dam: singles 13-Jan and 26-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): singles 9-Jan and 20-Jan with two 31-Jan. Kannaviou: one 8-Jan. Kermia Beach : singles 11-Jan and 19-Jan. Koloni Motorway: one 1-Jan. Konnos Bay area: one 27-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works/Salt Lake areas: two present all month. Liopetri: one 26-Jan. Lythrodontas: four 8-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: singles present on four dates with three 2-Jan and two 4-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: one present in the area all month. Phasouri Reed-beds: one 5-Jan and 6-Jan with two seen 12-Jan and 21-Jan. Potamos Liopetri area: singles 19-Jan and 26-Jan the latter bird carrying a rat. Vrysoulles area: one 5-Jan and 12-Jan. Xylofagou area: one beside the motorway 27-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: two 12-Jan.

Kelokedara-Trachypedoula: one 27-Jan. Kidasi: two 20-Jan. Panagia: one 8-Jan. Pissouri: one flying inland 6-Jan. Tsada Hills: one 15-Jan, 16-Jan and 27-Jan. Vrysoulles: one seen hovering in the wind over the village on both 20-Jan and 21-Jan.

Aspro Dam Pools: one 27-Jan. Choirokoitia: one 30-Jan. Evretou Dam: one 10-Jan. Kerynas Cliffs: one 5-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: one being mobbed by c40 Hooded Crows Corvus corone 27-Jan and one 29-Jan. Petra tou Romoiu: one with damaged left wing 21-Jan. Polemi-Psathi: one 24-Jan. Stavros tis Psokas Valley : two (adult pair) 10-Jan.

Common, widespread and under reported. Reported from 18 sites this month.

Common, widespread and under recorded. Reported from 11 sites this month. Maximum counts: Larnaca Airport Pools (South): 23 9-Jan. Larnaca Desalination Plant area: 38 5-Jan.

Larnaca Salt Lake: c350 on both 15-Jan and 23-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 63 5-Jan, 14 15-Jan and 63 23-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: 200+ 23-Jan, 100+ 31-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: c100 5-Jan, c200 6-Jan and 200+ 12-Jan; there is much movement of birds between this site and nearby Lady's Mile.

Several reports this year, of a normally scarce winter visitor. Akhna Dam: two 14-Jan. Aspro Dam Pools: one fem. 27-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: one seen most days 1-28-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 6-Jan, one male 19-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: one male 12-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: one male 12-Jan.

Reportedly very common this winter. Noteworthy reports included the following: Akrotiri (WSBA): seven 29-Jan. Aspro Dam Pools: five 13-17-Jan. Marathounta chapel area: up to 10 most days 14-27-Jan. Secret Valley Golf Club: 22 counted during a round of golf! 26-Jan.

Very common and widespread. Max. numbers reported as follows: Agia Napa Sewage Works area: five 11-Jan. Evretou Dam: six 10-Jan. Marathounta chapel area: 10 on 14-Jan and 14 on 27-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: up to eight all month.

Agia Napa Sewage Works: at least one male all month, with three (1 m, 2f) 11-Jan, two 30-Jan. Agia Napa tip: one 15-Jan. Anarita Park : one male 8-Jan. Evretou Dam: one male, near village 10-Jan. Kidasi: three males 20-Jan. Marathounta chapel area: at least one male 14-31-Jan, with two (1m, 1f) 22-Jan.
