Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis

Agia Napa Sewage Works: one 27-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: in Jan 2005 75 were present, the max. Jan 2006 count was a mere 27; this Jan numbers dropped again with a max. of only 22 on 23-Jan. Potamos Liopetri: two 26-Jan.

Bishop's Pool: 25 6-Jan and 55 12-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): 27 9-Jan, 29 20-Jan and 17 31-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: numbers decreased during the month with 407 5-Jan, 331 15-Jan and only 147 23-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: present all month with a max. of c100 6-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: less than 10 5-Jan, one 15-Jan and five 21-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: three 6-Jan.

Pochard Aythya ferina

Larnaca Sewage Works: numbers increased during the month starting with 148 5-Jan, then 194 15-Jan and finally 304 on 23-Jan. This latter count is the highest since January 1993 when there were 420 at Evretou Dam and 480 at Akhna Dam.

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca

Athalassa Park : six 8-Jan and at least 12 18-Jan. Bishop's Pool: four 7-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 29 2-Jan, 39 15-Jan and 50 on 23-Jan. This latter count is almost certainly an island record for this species.

Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula

Larnaca Sewage Works: a female present on 2-Jan, 5-Jan and 15-Jan was joined by a second 23-Jan.

Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator

 Potamos Liopetri coast. The five wintering females were joined by a sixth from 29-Jan.

Episkopi Cliffs: two 11-Jan. Kerynas Cliffs: three 8-Jan. Kidasi: one 20-Jan.  

Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus

Akhna Dam: one 31-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: one present most visits with two 15-Jan and 23-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: one or two present all month. One seen on 12-Jan was sporting a white wing-tag. Polis Reed-beds: one 26-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: two 6-Jan and three 12-Jan and 19-Jan.

Agia Napa Sewage Works: one 16-Jan. Akhna Dam: single ringtails on 14-Jan and 27-Jan. Arminou Dam: ringtail 20-Jan. Axylou: one 18-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: two ringtails 7-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: male 7-Jan and 17-Jan. Tsada Hills: singles daily 13-Jan until 15-Jan and also 31-Jan.

Fresh Water Lake (South): the wintering bird was still present on 9-Jan and 20-Jan. This represents the first January record for Cyprus .

Larnaca Sewage Works: two second-winter birds 2-Jan and an adult and second-winter 5-Jan.  

Little Gull Larus minutus 

Zakaki Marsh: a first-winter bird was reported on 6-Jan present to month end.  

Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus  

Fresh Water Lake (South): 330 9-Jan, 233 20-Jan and 215 31-Jan. The birds forage at a nearby rubbish tip and use the Lake for bathing and preening. Lady's Mile: c400 5-Jan, c300 6-Jan and 780 12-Jan. Larnaca Salt Lake: c350 on both 15-Jan and 23-Jan. Larnaca Sewage Works: 63 5-Jan, 14 15-Jan and 63 23-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: 200+ 23-Jan, 100+ 31-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: c100 5-Jan, c200 6-Jan and 200+ 12-Jan; there is much movement of birds between this site and nearby Lady's Mile.

Agia Napa: three 19-Jan. Agia Thekla coast: singles 4-Jan, 23-Jan and 30-Jan. Agia Trias: two 27-Jan. Kermia Beach : two 19-Jan. Limassol Bay : two 19-Jan. Potamos Liopetri: two 1-Jan and six 11-Jan. Spiros Beach : one 5-Jan.

Some large counts reported this month, including the following: Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): c300 going to roost in eucalypts 30-Jan. Aspro Dam Pools: c220 on 11-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): max. 201 on 20-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: 1200+ on 17-Jan, flying in several large groups.

Agia Napa: one 1-Jan. Skoulli: one 6-Jan.

Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): at least two present all Jan. No other reports.

Athalassa Park : three 4-Jan. Meneou Beach : one flying over fields near Salt lake at 5.10pm 3-Jan.

Paramali Beach : two 17-Jan, was a very early migrant.

One fem. present at Akhna Dam all month, one near at Banana Bay , Peyia 4-Jan and one rediscovered at Zakaki Marsh 19-Jan.

Larnaca Desalination Plant area: two 5-Jan. Larnaca Desalination Plant fields: c20 flew up briefly 23-Jan.

Ubiquitous and reported, often in loose groups, at Agia Napa Sewage Works area, Akhna Dam, Frenaros, Mandria, Manglis Lake, Oroklini Marsh and Paphos Sewage Plant.

A few early birds reported: Zakaki Marsh: at least two from 11-Jan, with four 12-Jan. Agia Thekla: one 25-Jan.

Very common. Largest flocks only noted here: Agia Napa Sewage Works area: 22 on 11-Jan. Agios Nikolaos (ESBA): 41 on 6-Jan. Akhna Dam: 31 on 14-Jan. Aspro dam and pools: 20+ on 4-Jan. Bishop's Pool: 25+ on 12-Jan. Evretou Dam: 22 on 10-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): 23 20-Jan. Marathounta chapel area: 40+ from 14-31-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: c20 30-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: 100+ on 3-Jan, 40 7-Jan, 90+ 19-Jan and c60 25-29-Jan.

Akrotiri Salt Lake : three 6-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: one 6-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: max. 12 on 3-Jan, with at least one seen all month. Phasouri Reed-beds: up to three 5-15-Jan, with five 12-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: at least one all month, with two 21-28-Jan.

Bishop's Pool: one 6-12-Jan. Episkopi, Ezousas Valley : one 16 & 31-Jan. Fresh Water Lake (South): three 9-Jan, four 20-31-Jan. Mandria Canal : one 17-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 19-Jan.  

White Wagtail Motacilla alba  

A ubiquitous species, sometimes over 10 together. Paphos Sewage Plant: c45 on 19-Jan. Phinikoudes, Larnaca: 50+ roosting in palm trees 6.00pm 3-Jan.

Kakopetria: one 4-Jan.  

Robin Erithacus rubecula   

Widely seen and heard. Noteworthy reports include: Arminou Dam: 13 on 20-Jan. Episkopi, Ezousas Valley : 10 on 16-Jan. Otherwise fewer than five reported at any sites.  

Bluethroat Luscinia svecica    

Several reports this year, of a normally scarce winter visitor. Akhna Dam: two 14-Jan. Aspro Dam Pools: one fem. 27-Jan. Oroklini Marsh: one seen most days 1-28-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: one 6-Jan, one male 19-Jan. Phasouri Reed-beds: one male 12-Jan. Zakaki Marsh: one male 12-Jan.  

Black Redstart Phoenicurus ochruros  

Reportedly very common this winter. Noteworthy reports included the following: Akrotiri (WSBA): seven 29-Jan. Aspro Dam Pools: five 13-17-Jan. Marathounta chapel area: up to 10 most days 14-27-Jan. Secret Valley Golf Club: 22 counted during a round of golf! 26-Jan.  

Stonechat Saxicola torquatus  

Very common and widespread. Max. numbers reported as follows: Agia Napa Sewage Works area: five 11-Jan. Evretou Dam: six 10-Jan. Marathounta chapel area: 10 on 14-Jan and 14 on 27-Jan. Paphos Sewage Plant: up to eight all month.  

Finsch’s Wheatear Oenanthe finschii  

Agia Napa Sewage Works: at least one male all month, with three (1 m, 2f) 11-Jan, two 30-Jan. Agia Napa tip: one 15-Jan. Anarita Park : one male 8-Jan. Evretou Dam: one male, near village 10-Jan. Kidasi: three males 20-Jan. Marathounta chapel area: at least one male 14-31-Jan, with two (1m, 1f) 22-Jan.  

Blue Rock Thrush Monticola solitarius  

Asprokremmos Dam: one male 1-17-Jan. Coral Bay: one male 20-Jan. Evretou Dam: one male, near village 10-Jan and at dam wall 13-Jan.  

Blackbird Turdus merula  

Widely reported, mostly ones and twos seen briefly in flight.
