Field Meetings

BirdLife Cyprus arranges a field meetings program from late August until early May each year for members. These are centred on the Island's major coastal bird watching sites, with visits to other areas to see the Islands birds which only occur within a restricted range, such as the Troodos mountains. Visitors to Cyprus are welcome to join these events.

Introducing the Birds of Cyprus

Once a month BirdLife Cyprus organizes a meeting especially for new comers to bird watching and those who would like to give it a try for the first time. The meeting usually lasts about an hour and a half and will involve a short walk to look at the birds of the month’s chosen area. Binoculars are provided for those without a pair. Children are welcome but those under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Cyprus breeding bird Atlas project

For most species the breeding season is taken to be from March to June but there are exceptions such as early and late breeding raptors, and adult birds seen feeding juveniles late in the year. Ideally, members are asked to survey one or more 5km squares two or three times during the breeding season recording all the species breeding within it, noting the breeding evidence code. But if this is not possible, all casual breeding records are useful, if the locations and breeding criteria are accurately given.

It is a record of the species breeding in each square, not the total populations, that are being sought at present. It is appreciated that there may be some difficulty in knowing which square one is in!

Spring Alive 2008

BirdLife Cyprus is taking part in BirdLife International’s Spring Alive project again this year.

We are hoping to encourage adults and children from all over the island to participate in Europe ’s biggest spring bird watch. Of course we are sure that you, our members, will lead by example and be amongst the first to register their sightings!
