Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and covers an area of  9250 sq kms. It is situated at the easternmost part of the Mediterranean basin and right in the middle of the migration routes for millions of birds which move every year from Europe to Africa and Asia in autumn and back to Europe in spring.

Cyprus has a bird list of 378 species. This includes two endemic species, the Cyprus Pied Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca and the Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax. In addition there are four endemic subspecies: Cyprus Scops Owl Otus scops cyprius, Coal Tit Parus ater cypriotes, Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae and Jay Garrulus glandarius glaszneri.

BirdLife Cyprus was formed in 2003 through the amalgamation of the two Cyprus Ornithological Societies (COS 1957 and COS 1970).

The main aims of
BirdLife Cyprus are:

1. to promote the study of birds in Cyprus and to publish the results.
2. to promote the protection of birds in Cyprus.
3. to assist in bringing the birds of Cyprus to the notice of the widest possible audience and to
co-operate with international ornithological societies.
4  to organise field meetings for the benefit of the members of the Society.
5. to encourage and support the conservation of natural and man-made habitats for birds in
Cyprus.
6. to provide a social forum for members.
