BirdLife Cyprus Executive Director, Dr Clairie Papazoglou and the Campaigns Manager, Mr Martin Hellicar met with the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Demetres Iliades, on 4th June. The Minister was appointed in March 2010, following the resignation of previous Minister Mr. Polyneikis. BirdLife Cyprus discussed a number of issues with the Minister including protection and management of Natura 2000 sites, the new Common Agricultural Policy and the evolution of the Rural Development program, development of renewable energy and the need for safeguards for Natura 2000 sites, water management policies and desalination. The meeting was in a very good atmosphere and the new Minister spoke of his commitment to work closely with NGOs, and expressed real commitment for the protection of Natura 2000 sites. We look forward to seeing some impact on the ground.
