What are Special Protection Areas?
One of the most important issues of concern for the EU is the ongoing degradation of natural habitats and the constant undermining of biodiversity and wildlife populations. To tackle this problem, the EU recognized the need to establish a European network of ecological sensitive areas known as NATURA 2000. The network is established by the 1992 Habitats Directive (92/43/EC) and also includes the Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for birds established under the provisions of the 1979 Birds Directive (79/409/EC).
